Can you be at two places at once? Not in the metaverse, or in VR, but physically? Recently, a case has gone viral because it seemed a YouTuber was able to be at two very different places at the same time. December 18, 2022, Stephen was home live-streaming for his YouTube audience. His stream was titled “The Violent Night - Christmas Stream.” He was engaged in intense gameplay of Grand Theft Auto. But at the same time, it was alleged that he was somewhere else completely. Miles away. Allegedly was caught on CCTV on his way to murder his pregnant girlfriend. But how could that be if he was sitting in front of his camera live-streaming? Is this a case of mistaken identity? A dopple ganger? Or something else entirely? Under that broad heading, they discuss Illinois issues such as corruption, abortion and taxes. G., Radtke, O., Selwood, J., Williams, R., Ford, E., McCullagh, L., McErlane, J., O'Donnell, C. K., Durant, C., Bartsch, U., Jones, M. W., Munoz Neira, C., Wearn, A. R., Grogan, J. P., Coulthard, E. J. Abstract: The human brain selectively stores knowledge of the world to optimise future behaviour, automatically rehearsing, contextualising or discarding information to create a robust record of experiences. Storage or forgetting evolves over time, particularly during sleep. We sought to test how dopamine shaped long term memory formation before and during sleep. We administered dopamine (L-DOPA tablet) during learning, re-learning, consolidation or retrieval of word lists in two independent double-blind randomised placebo-controlled cross-over studies of healthy older adults (study 1 n = 35, study 2 n = 32). During consolidation, nocturnal dopamine accelerated forgetting for words presented once, but did not affect words presented twice from forgetting. Overnight dopamine increased total slow wave sleep duration by approximately 11%. The effect of dopamine on memory correlated with increased spindle amplitude, which was maximised near slow oscillation peaks, suggesting dopamine-dependent memory processing modulates spindles dependent on slow-oscillation phase. Pharmaceutical modification of slow wave sleep holds great promise for improving old age - potential benefits could include cognitive enhancement and Alzheimer's prevention. SSM Episode 25 This episode dives back into the topic of body composition in sport that we started a few weeks ago. Some might say it is a touchy topic but as you will learn from Jason today, there is a lot of benefit to speaking up and sharing wisdom! Coach Jason McCullagh is the Director of Athlete Performance at Conker Fitness and Founder/Co Owner of Mettle Sports Training . Coach McCullagh has been working with young athletes since he built the Strength and Conditioning Program for the Maverick Volleyball Club in Ottawa in 2005 and subsequently launched the brand Mettle Sports Training to support volleyball athletes more broadly. While his focus was Volleyball athletes for many years, he also works with Soccer, Baseball and Hockey athletes on a regular basis. His approach is very much keeping things simple where every exercise has a reason to be there, no ‘fluff’. Coach McCullagh’s focus on building long term relationships and development strategies with athletes and their parents will improve performance, reduce injury potential and educate athletes at every touch point. In this interview we get into some specific details about training and body composition for the teen athlete, we tackle the goal of training and how it relates to the athlete’s physique. We also get introduced to Jason’s philosophy on testing body composition and I have to say it is refreshing. As a former collegiate athlete who was body fat tested regularly I wish I had more of Jason’s approach. A confidence in body composition can support a confidence in an athlete on and off the field of play or the ice rink. To support our athletes this spring we are offering a 5 day coaching experience to map out their performance body. This does mean addressing the big discussion about body composition but I think you will find our approach and our philosophy to be a game changer. How often do you take care of your ears? Hearing hygiene is a thing, I learned through Dr. Marjorie C. McCullagh from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. She studies hearing loss in farmers, and gave me some tips on learning about how to put in my earplugs properly. Something that we don’t think about often is how concerts and other sounds can affect our health down the line. Hearing is something that we take for granted, and I know that I’m definitely going to think twice when I go to a concert without earplugs after hearing what Dr. McCullagh told me can happen when you don’t take proper precautions! We also talk about how the sound level of even common place sounds can be too much if its an “impact” vs a “continuous” noise, and other advances in hearing research and behavioral incentives for helping rural health.

Poisson regression models for count variables have been utilized in many applications. However, in many problems overdispersion and zero-inflation occur. We study in this paper regression models based on the generalized Poisson distribution (Consul (1989)). These regression models which have been used for about 15 years do not belong to the class of generalized linear models considered by (McCullagh and Nelder (1989)) for which an established asymptotic theory is available. Therefore we prove consistency and asymptotic normality of a solution to the maximum likelihood equations for zero-inflated generalized Poisson regression models. Further the accuracy of the asymptotic normality approximation is investigated through a simulation study. This allows to construct asymptotic confidence intervals and likelihood ratio tests.

The paper presents a smooth regression model for ordinal data with longitudinal dependence structure. A marginal model with cumulative logit link (McCullagh 1980) is applied to cope for the ordinal scale and the main and covariate effects in the model are allowed to vary with time. Local fitting is pursued and asymptotic properties of the estimates are discussed. A data example demonstrates the exploratory flavor of the smooth model. In a second step, the longitudinal dependence of the observations is considered. Cumulative log odds ratios are fitted locally which provides insight how the dependence of the ordinal observations changes with time.

We consider the profile score function in models with smooth and parametric components. If local respectively weighted likelihood estimation is used for fitting the smooth component, the resulting profile likelihood estimate for the parametric component is asymptotically efficient as shown in Severini&Wong (Annals of Statist., 1992). However, as in solely parametric models the profile score function is not unbiased. We propose a small sample bias adjustment which results by extending the correction suggested in McCullagh&Tibshirani (JRSS B, 1990) to the framework of semiparametric models.

In this paper it is shown that the use of non-singular block invariant matrices of covariates leads to `generalized estimating equations' estimators (GEE estimators; Liang, K.-Y.&Zeger, S. (1986). Biometrika, 73(1), 13-22) which are identical regardless of the `working' correlation matrix used. Moreover, they are efficient (McCullagh, P. (1983). The Annals of Statistics, 11(1), 59-67). If on the other hand only time invariant covariates are used the efficiency gain in choosing the `correct' vs. an `incorrect' correlation structure is shown to be negligible. The results of a simple simulation study suggest that although different GEE estimators are no more identical and are no more as efficient as an ML estimator, the differences are still negligible if both time and block invariant covariates are present.
