Housing will be one of the issues foremost in voters' minds when they go to the polls on Friday. But after an election campaign low on genuine debate, they'll be forgiven for some confusion over the detail of which party has promised what to whom. So what exactly are the different parties promising to do on housing? When it comes to specifics like how how much financial support to give buyers, how much social housing to build, and how much to intervene in rent control or tenants' rights, there are some key points of difference. Michael Byrne is a housing researcher and a lecturer in political economy at University College Dublin's School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice. He talks with authors of the new report, The Impact of Cost Rental Housing: Security, Affordability and Place, Dr Michael Byrne, Dr Cian O Callaghan and Rosemary Hennigan of Tuath Housing and Aengus Hennessy a resident in new cost rental housing. Send us a text I first met Michael Byrne in the months after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Many parts of the New York area were still reeling from the hurricane. Byrne was overseeing FEMA's response to the hurricane and he was serving the city where he was born and bred, just as he did after 9/11 working for the Department of Homeland Security, just as he had working for the city's Office of Emergency Management, just as he had as an FDNY firefighter, much like the uncles he watched as a young kid. He learned the lessons of a life of service early and he's never forgotten them.
Michael Byrne's keynote at FOSS4G NA 2024 emphasized the interconnection between broadband investment and geospatial development. He highlighted the importance of public policy and funding in fostering these ecosystems, particularly in the context of the U.S. government's role. Highlights

Today I am joined by Michael Byrne and he is with BIA Neuroscience. And just me saying the word neuroscience, know that that's one of my things just to remind you about my previous content. I have a background in psychology and actually went to graduate school for a bit for clinical neuropsychology. So the brain is definitely something I'm always interested in. So I'm excited for you to share more about your company today. Michael, welcome. before we… get into all that and how this is going to help people with sleep, which is another one of my favorite topics. I'd love for you to just share how is it you got interested in this kind of work and kind of what inspired you to, you know, make a sleep product? Were you having personal trouble with sleep? Like what's the scoop? Michael (00:44.354)I'm excited to be here. Thanks for having me. I'll give a long -winded story and edit it as you feel. I went into biopsychology myself. I was very interested in the why behind people's behavior. Why do we do anything? And originally that led me to psychology. And then more I studied it, more I realized the brain was behind it. So I went towards biopsychology. And I ended up doing an internship with a group in paranoid schizophrenia. Cheryl McColgan (00:51.84)you Michael (01:14.38)Very quickly learned studying and working are two vastly different things in the field of psychology. So, you know, I was expecting something like a little bit more exciting and fast pace. And instead it's really quite upsetting and requires a significant amount of empathy and, you know, emotional backing behind it that can be quite draining. So I decided to just get into the working world and see what I liked. So I ended up getting a position at a neurofeedback clinic. I became a certified neurofeedback technician and just saw everything under the sun. And one of the things I noticed and one of the things that we emphasize every single time was when someone came in for a session, we asked them, how was your sleep? And big reason why we did that is it's a more objective way to get an understanding of someone's current cognitive state, so to speak. When you ask someone who's, for example, going through depression and you ask them, how are you doing today? it's one a negative trigger and two you might not get as direct of a response in terms of their current state of mind then if you ask something along the lines of how was your sleep? How was your energy? How are you feeling? It gets you a bit more of a rounded understanding and we asked that no matter the reason someone came in to the neur...

The second Stephen King novella from the Different Seasons collection. We talked about the book and its subsequent film. Quite dark, extremely heavy, and definitely not “Shauna friendly”. Prior to that he worked at Citigroup in the real estate investment banking group. Mr. Byrne is a member of the Urban Land Institute (U.L.I.) and NAREIM, and a graduate of Dartmouth College. Our conversation with Mike begins with his graduation from Dartmouth, where he captained the men's hockey team, and entered the workforce at Salomon Smith Barney (Citigroup) as an investment banking analyst in the Real Estate & Lodging Group. With his first day in the real estate group falling on 9/11, Mike shares with us how this made for a strange start to a career. Amidst the ensuing capital markets turmoil, Mike then returned to his local roots and joined Mass PRIM as an analyst supporting the pension plan's real estate and timber allocation strategies. We discuss how this gave Mike a unique perspective and foundation for the balance of his career, all of which has been spent in the real estate investment management business with AEW which he joined almost 20 years ago in 2003.The bulk of our discussion centers around the tremendous growth and success of AEW over the years. Mike's passion for AEW shines through as he shares with us observations on company culture, operating partner selection, the firm's innovative menu of investment strategies, investing through cycles and AEW's current outlook on the market from Mike's perspective as CIO.This was a terrific look into AEW, one of the world's largest real estate investment managers with almost $100 billion of assets under management, 830 employees in 18 offices across the globe, and over 800 institutional clients. Mike Byrne is one of the market's most prominent and respected investment management professionals, and this episode makes it clear why. We look forward to having Mike and his teammates back to Good Dirt as we know we've just scratched the surface. For more information on AEW please visit https://www.aew.com/*** As mentioned in the episode intro, the Bisnow Boston Healthcare Real Estate Summit will be held on Weds, May 24th. Artificial intelligence, such as computer-aided detection and computer-aided diagnosis or differentiation uses complex algorithms to identify and characterize polyps in situ during screening for colorectal cancer. Emergent evidence suggests that the performance of AI models is superior to current standards of practice. On this episode, Drs Bigham and Omole speak with Dr. Michael Byrne, co-author of a practice paper in CMAJ entitled Artificial intelligence in colorectal cancer screening. He argues that while artificial intelligence will not replace physicians, physicians who use AI will eventually replace physicians who don't.Next they speak with Zayna Khayat, a future strategist and Vice President of Growth & Client Success at digital health solutions firm, Teladoc Health. She's also adjunct faculty at the Rotman School of Business. Zayna says that AI's biggest impact on medicine will come from reducing costs and increasing the number of patients that can be guided through the system.

The insurance industry is under incredible pressure. In addition to ongoing challenges from the COVID-19 crisis, insurers face pressures when it comes to new regulations, increased M&A activities, talent recruitment and retention, and cost reduction—all redefining the way business gets done today. For many organizations, these challenges are compounded by IT complexity—including aging solutions that pass data through a maze of convoluted repositories, making processing overly complex and reporting difficult at best. Tune in as Deloitte insurance transformation leaders share ideas that can help you evolve in lockstep with disruption, using intelligent solutions to drive new insights and efficiencies with your data. Hear how insurers across all lines are addressing trends in finance, leveraging new business architectures, and unlocking value with the latest technologies. Our conversation will cover strategies for streamlining and automating financial accounting—from the moment a business event occurs, straight through to close, consolidation, and reporting (CCR). Find out how built-to-evolve Kinetic Insurance capabilities can help you gain a competitive edge with transformed reporting, reduced manual work, and streamlined regulatory tasks for things like Yellow/Blue/Green Books, IFRS, and LDTI reporting. In today's episode we talk about Artificial Intelligence with an amazing expert in the medical field Dr. Michael Byrne, CEO and Founder of Satisfai Health. Global Health Impact Fund (GHIF) is a Strategic Venture Capital Investment Network. Our investor-focused model invests exclusively on behalf of our clinician and healthcare professional investor network. We provide an opportunity for these professionals to participate in a diversified portfolio of early-stage healthcare technology companies. These businesses are revolutionizing the healthcare industry, but the vast majority of clinical professionals are simply observers to changes that will upset their practices and worldview. GHIF offers a potent alternative to that scenario. GHIF investors will directly help shape the technological cutting edge as executive advisors to the Fund. We care not just for your investment, but also for your opinions and participation. Our typical prospective investment will be seeking between $250K and $2M in capital. For businesses looking for more than $2M in the capital, we have the flexibility to co-invest alongside other strategic venture partners who meet our standards for commitment to healthcare improvement. We would love to know what you took away from this conversation with Martyn and Michael! Follow @martyneeles and give your insight and questions using the hashtag #GHIF. If you would like to be considered as a guest or have someone you would like to hear from (GP or LP), drop me a direct message on Twitter.
