Today's guest on the Shane Sams Show is Erin Pheil of MindFixGroup.com! Erin specializes in helping entrepreneurs and leaders eliminate the mental roadblocks holding them back from what they are capable of. Erin has a background in psychology and digital media. In today's episode you'll learn: How Erin Pheil got over her mental roadblocks to live the life she wants! Want to grow a great business? Have a great marriage? We all do. And that's the "curse" of being someone who is an achiever. Because you want it, you often will feel like "I'm not doing enough." Once this sets in though, it can often prevent you from achieving everything you want. On today's episode, Erin and I dive into this. Her work at Mindfix is incredible. But it's all based on something I like to call "The Art of Subtraction." Most people add and add and add to their plate to the point where it all falls apart. They repeat this cycle over and over because our culture is built around a ravenous desire to acquire. But to be a true achiever, mastering the art of subtraction is key. And in this episode, you'll find out out how. Enjoy!

These thoughts negatively impacted everything she did. Mental barriers completely held her back from ever deeply enjoying the rich life she dreamt of. Then out of nowhere, she was hit with chronic pain that completely sidelined her for 2.5 years. After spending thousands to figure out why she was suffering, she sat opposite a therapist one day who told her ‘you are in pain because your mental lens is dirty, and it’s skewing how you experience the world’. Erin needed to figure out how to change her mindset. She walked out the door and knew she needed to move forward. And today, her company MindFix is helping people relieve suffering with an astounding 96.1% success rate. Today’s guest is Erin Field, founder of the MindFix Group. She joins Charlie to jam about why it’s so hard to rewrite stories and change self-sabotaging scripts. They also talk about some things you can do when you’re tired of the same choices leading to the same actions. Key Takeaways:[0:05] - Charlie’s new book, Start Finishing: How to Go From Idea to Done is out now! Productivity is how we become our best selves in the world. The book covers tools, practices, and mindsets that will help you finish the stuff your soul is yearning to do. There are contributions from Charlie’s friends, colleagues, and teachers. If you’d like to pre-order a copy, click the link below.[4:00] - Erin ran a successful web agency for almost seventeen years, until she realized that it wasn’t something she wanted to do for the rest of her life. The fear around this thought was that her career was all she had ever known. After a series of rock bottoms, she started to see a therapist who showed her that the way she was looking at the world and seeing things was affecting everything else.[8:05] - She devoted all of her energy into learning how she could actually change what was going on in her head. When it became replicable, she realized this work was what she wanted to be doing. Our operating beliefs are the ones that are doing the driving, and tend to be the ones that drive our self-sabotage. [11:25] - Emotion drives action, and the language we use to describe things actually becomes the way we see and operate in the world. The stories, or head trash, tends to dominate. The piece of head trash impacts how events occur to us. This is the same principle as confirmation bias.[15:10] - People often struggle with what their “true” or “authentic” selves are. Different people can have different truths, and maybe the more important question is asking "what’s useful?" That can get us much further than “what’s true?” [17:50] - One of the most frustrating things about head trash is that we often realize the story we’re telling ourselves, and we know it’s not useful, but it’s difficult to change it. People hold on to these beliefs or stories because they feel like they have seen evidence in the world that it is true. [20:20] - In addition to our own stories, our cultures also have stories that become part of our mental narrative as evidence. When we have a belief that already has some evidence, every new bit of evidence that confirms the belief strengthens it, and we easily write off anything that doesn’t confirm it.[23:20] - The body keeps the score with all of our stories and head trash, and this can eventually manifest itself physically. Erin talks about some of the tests they use with their clients, and one of them is whether or not they can feel something in their bodies when they have those thoughts.[26:40] - People must learn to accept that it’s okay to have conflicting beliefs. They only accept one, and when they don’t acknowledge that they feel a certain way, they tend to suppress those beliefs or push them away. It takes energy to push things away, and when we accept them, sometimes the power dissolves.[31:20] - There is a connection between the body and the mind, but there are also some disanalogies that keep us stuck. It’s not quite as obvious when we push away mental beliefs versus physical manifestation.[32:55] - Erin talks about our beliefs and stories surrounding what’s possible with change. Our stories can anchor us down and prevent us from seeing our other successes.[36:45] - When it comes to goal setting with contradictory beliefs, Charlie talks about changing the directive. Instead of saying you can or can’t lose that weight or save that money, remain open and change the directive to “what would happen if I…” This curiosity is a useful tool to uncover what people’s specific head trash is.[41:40] - The work of uprooting head trash is daily work, because there are new things that pop up when we get rid of one thing. If it feels like there are other beliefs sprouting up, what you think you got rid of may not have been the root of the problem.[44:30] - The first step to getting unstuck from self-sabotage stories is to identify and uncover what the roots of our head trash are. Step two is dissolving and eliminating them, which is the main work of MindFix. The million dollar question for people to start asking themselves is “What would I have to believe to be true in order to keep experiencing this pattern over and over again?”[47:45] - Erin invites listeners to seriously ask themselves that million dollar question above, at least ten times a day. It is one of the most insightful questions that will help you learn about yourself in a short amount of time. Ask yourself that question and see what shows up. “Let’s find out what is causing the pain and get rid of it… if there are specific problems that are holding you back and costing you in terms of time, money, sanity. Let’s go in and pull them out so you can be this person without these... heavy weights.” - Erin This week on Experts Unleashed, we’re discussing all things mindset with Erin Pheil, founder of MindFix. MindFix helps entrepreneurs and high performers identify and eliminate the roadblocks that are holding them back from being able to achieve what they want to achieve and make the money that they want to make. How many books have you read, or affirmations have you stated, only to continue being stuck in the same behavior patterns you are trying to break? The problem is, you have all of the logical knowledge you need to find success. Your downfall is in the underlying mindsets that are limiting your ability to move forward. “So often we look at a pain and think about how to treat that problem. But, a lot of times there are lots of other solutions that are connected below the surface or connected through some other channel that can really help you solve the root cause.” - Joel MindFix was birthed from Erin’s own experience with overcoming limiting mindsets. The ignored and suppressed lack of purpose in her career manifested in years of chronic pain that drained her of her desire to live. This path led her towards her current work as a mindset coach. Sometimes the most painful events in our lives can actually be a stepping stone on our path towards fulfillment. She discovered the power of identifying the root causes of pain, patterns that limited her achievement, and getting out of her own way to find success and fulfillment. “If you’re stuck, and if you’re running into something, even if you’ve been dealing with it for years or decades, a harsh inner critic or self-doubt or anxiety or fear, the one thing I want to share is that it is possible to truly eliminate those things in a short period of time.” If you find yourself trapped in patterns of behaviors that stand in the way of success in your business, it might be time to investigate the beliefs that may be standing in your way. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Are you stuck in a rut? Feel like your agency isn't going anywhere? Are you full of strategies but lacking in execution? Ever feel like you're stuck on an endless hamster wheel? It might be that you're in your own way and it's time to dig a little deeper. Your biggest obstacle might be all the trash in your own head. A change in mindset and thoughts can be a critical step towards growing your agency. In today's episode, we'll cover: What is head trash? The problems caused by head trash. 3 ways to take out the (head) trash and change your mindset so you can grow your agency. Today, I talked with Erin Pheil founder of MindFix — a group dedicated to eliminating self-sabotage in entrepreneurs and high-performers. Before she founded MindFix, Erin spent 16 years hustling at her own digital agency, FollowBright, so she totally gets the struggles of agency life. She's here with a wealth of experience and savvy techniques to teach us how to overcome our own mental barriers. Once you get out of your own way, you'll be on a better trajectory to grow your agency faster and easier. What Is Head Trash and Why Is It a Problem? There are tons of agency owners out there who have the strategies and the resources they need to become hyper-successful, but they just can't seem to get there. Too often we look towards the latest-and-greatest strategy as a growth pillar but when it doesn't work we get frustrated. Instead, Erin says we should be looking inward at the stories we are telling ourselves. What negative talk or stories are you telling yourself? "All my clients just beat us up on price and don't appreciate our value." "Our clients don't care about us, they treat us like a commodity." All of these stories we have in our heads are what Erin calls head trash. Basically, head trash is the loops and patterns we fall into due to previous exposure to situations. All of these stories impact the way we deal with our every day and often times causing turmoil. For example, let's say you used to work at a call center and you had one of those robotic scripts you had to say on every call. You couldn't stand the script; you felt it was turning away customers because it was so poorly written. Fast forward to today. You run a marketing agency and you're considering using a chatbot as a pre-qualifier for new leads. You have the resources and the strategy, but you don't pull the trigger because you believe scripted conversations aren't effective for gaining new customers. That is head trash. Head trash is the stuff that stands in our way -- and it's the stuff we can actually control. It's so much easier to overcome than we realize, but most of us don't even know or understand why it exists. Head trash can cause your agency to stall, cost you clients or stand in your way of fulfilling your profession or personal potential. 3 Ways to Take Out the (Head) Trash How do you clear all of this programming out of your head? 1. Stop and Think! Next time someone does something that doesn't sit right with you, think first instead of reacting. Why are they doing this? What are some reasons for this behavior? Are there external circumstances that may cause this? Once you learn how to think about every possible scenario in your encounters with others, you'll also begin to think about your own behavior in this same way. You'll be able to dissect your own hang-ups and understand the underlying stories you're telling yourself. (From the earlier example... Why don't you like chatbots? Is it because of that call center experience? Bingo!) 2. Think Neutral. You want to remove emotion from your decisions. If you start to feel emotion when you're making a decision that should be rational, try to figure out why. There's a root cause of every emotion; if you want to remove the head trash the key is getting to the bottom of the emotion. 3. Don't Jump to Conclusions. This is huge! Preconceived notions can kill a good idea before it even launches. For example, don't assume your chatbot won't work before you even test it. Don't be afraid to try, test, or fail. Failure is the key to future successes. If you're jumping to conclusions all the time, you have some serious head trash you need to deal with. Normally on the podcast, we cover many different approaches to help create paid traffic or run successful campaigns. However, what often gets in the way of this is what occurs before you even get to that step; and it happens in our own minds. It’s the limiting beliefs and blockages that stop you from creating the content that you know will help the people that read it and help your business. That’s why we’re very excited to have Erin Pheil on the podcast, as Erin has been instrumental in helping me to identify my strengths and weaknesses, which has allowed me to become the most productive version of myself. Episode Discussions: What to do about being overwhelmed Big tip on how to start the process of correction How to overcome challenges and keep making progress The importance of mindset Adam’s secret for best performing copy “Head Trash” A better optimal state Look at it and evaluate it Habits of high performers Unwrapping an interpretation The Four Agreements: Don’t take things personally “The Possibilities Game” [03:27] Erin’s Story Holds a BA in psychology and an MA in social media Co-founder of Mindfix Group, a rapid mind transformation program designed specifically for high achievers and entrepreneurs Mindfix provides relief and the permanent fix that people are always searching for but can’t always find in books and courses [05:04] Overwhelmed in marketing What should someone do if they don’t know where to start? Find out what the root problem is Overwhelm could be stemming from many different reasons [06:12] Example: Two Clients Both are overwhelmed, but the feeling comes from different problems No one can just give a step-by-step guide to help universally (which is why self-help books don’t always help [08:40] Insight to what’s happening Once you notice you’re falling into a pattern, PAUSE Ask yourself: “What are the thoughts that are showing up right now?” Pay attention to the, and write them down Read them out and recognize the pattern [10:52] Example: Perfectionist Client tried this and realized that she thought everything she did had to be perfect No one can ever do everything perfectly, so she froze [12:09] Mindset is unbelievably important If you can come into your marketing from a position of power and positivity, that’s where the sales are made It changes the way you write and the way you present yourself It also makes it easier to connect with people on an emotional level [13:15] Adam’s secret for his best performing ad copy Avoid being in a bad place mentally [14:03] “Head Trash” The more that’s in your head (especially thoughts of failure) the harder it is to become calm and confident Clear out the trash [15:19] What’s the next step after you’ve written down your thoughts? There’s no solid solution, but calling attention to it helps Sometimes just writing it down helps your mind to click and stop Working with someone one-on-one is a better way [17:04] Better optimal state “It decreases that charge—the emotion that’s coming from believing everything that’s on that piece of paper” Viewing through a third person lens helps you to put perspective on your thoughts Once you call attention to it and can separate yourself from it, your confidence goes up [17:51] Once your confidence goes up, your marketing and business results will go up [18:17] Look at it and evaluate it Look at what you’ve just written out Ask yourself if it’s true (try to be positive, usually it isn’t!) When the head trash gets cleared out, there’s nothing to write down anymore [19:25] What are some habits that you’ve seen among the high performers that they’ve instilled in their lives? One process works really well that they engage in regularly… Throughout the day we apply our own interpretations to the events that happen These interpretations fuse together in our minds and we see them as reality We can feel negatively about this “reality” High performers make it a habit to unwrap their interpretation from the event They see these events as neutral, and separate themselves from them Possibilities as to why an event happened become limitless when you don’t involve yourself [23:19] The Four Agreements Don’t take it personally – what people say to you is a reflection of what they’re going through, it’s not necessarily to do with you The paradigm shift of Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is another example [24:47] “The Possibilities Game” If you’re triggered by someone cutting you off while driving, the ONLY reason you’re feeling upset is because you’re interpreting it in a certain way Come up with four other possibilities for why the person would do that You can make up stories like “maybe they need to get to the hospital” By telling another story, it breaks up the rigidity of what that “reality” is [26:09] Jumping to conclusions in marketing Automatically thinking your content isn’t good enough because no one is watching it In reality, it’s a long game; it might just be the wrong time Negative comments on Facebook ads Don’t take it personally [28:42] When you see those comments (or none at all) be empathetic The more we can empathize with our target market, the better we’ll be at marketing By putting ourselves in their shoes we can create high converting campaigns and messages that resonate Mentioned in this episode: Mind Fix Group Erin Pheil (personal website) Facebook page The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruez The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R.
