Journey with Jake
The Joy, Flavor and Affection of Salsa Dancing: David Schafran's Transformational Journey

Journey with Jake

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2025 53:39 Transcription Available

When David Schafran felt his life spiraling into depression and emptiness, he discovered an unexpected lifeline – salsa dancing. That first night on the dance floor sparked something profound: "It makes me feel so happy because it's so joyous and flavorful and juicy." This moment of clarity eventually led David from his high-stress tech startup in Boston to the vibrant streets of Medellín, Colombia, where he immersed himself in dance for five transformative months.David's story challenges conventional thinking about wellness and healing. Despite practicing meditation and yoga, these solitary pursuits weren't enough to lift him from his emotional fog. What he desperately needed was connection, expression, and embodied joy – elements he found abundantly in the salsa dancing community. As he puts it, salsa offers three essential gifts: "joy, flavor, and affection."This revelation didn't just change David's personal life – it birthed a mission. Through his company Soma Loco (meaning "we're crazy together"), he now creates personalized dance immersion experiences that help others discover the same transformative power of movement. Whether you're an experienced dancer or someone who believes they have "two left feet," David's approach proves that dance isn't about performance but feeling. The results speak for themselves, with participants describing the experience as genuinely life-changing.Ready to discover how movement might transform your life? David's journey reminds us that sometimes healing isn't found in stillness, but in rhythm; not in isolation, but in connection. As he advocates, dance isn't just fun – it's medicine that should be taken seriously as a path to well-being. Follow your curiosity to somoloco.com or @dancesomoloco on Instagram to learn how you might find your own rhythm.Want to be a guest on Journey with Jake? The St. John's Morning Show from CBC Radio Nfld. and Labrador (Highlights)

Many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians head down south for the winter. Whether its Cuba, the Dominican Republic or another sunny Caribbean destination. Those trips to latin-american countries have inspired some St. John's residents to learn how to salsa. Now, a small and tight-knit salsa dancing community has formed in the city. They gather on Friday nights at Boca to dance on the street. The CBC's Michelle McCann went to the restaurant last week to speak with them.

Today, Ed is joined by Emmi Fortin, a breakup and relationship coach, whose work focuses on helping people through the recovery process of a breakup and building foundations for future relationships. She talks about how her own relationship informed her work, and how she transitioned from high school biology teacher to entrepreneur. They discuss the financial responsibility of making a career change. They discuss her book, Who Is Your Red Dress? One Woman's Quest to Break Up With a Love Addiction, a memoir that Emmi's friend describes as “Sex in the City meets the world of salsa dancing.” She explains love addiction, which was what she experienced in a relationship where she felt addicted to the highs and lows of the relationship. This bridges into a discussion of attachment theory, which manifests in 4 styles: the secure, the anxious, the avoidant, and the disorganized. Emmi introduces her relationship cheat sheet, in which one identifies their core values, the qualities they want from their partner and the ones they don't, how they want to feel in a relationship consistently, and becoming an external observer of yourself and your potential partner; and then, choosing to take action to make those things happen. Emmi shares the emotional burden of a past relationship, and she and Ed discuss the language of trauma, the impacts it can have on an individual, and how one can start moving forward from it. Even if you are a victim, they explain, you can also be your own savior. They close in comparing self-alignment with chiropractic alignment, and how sometimes a good crack in the back is all it takes. Andrés Espinoza Agurrrrto's new book, Salsa Consciente: Politics, Poetics, and Latinidad in the Meta-Barrio, explores the Salsa consciente movement, a Latino movement of music, poetry, and political discourse that exploded in the 1970s. Largely linked to the development of Nuyo latino popular music, Salsa consciente was brought about, in part, by the mass Latino migration to New York City beginning in the 1950s and the subsequent social movements that were tied to the shifting political landscapes. Defined by its lyrical content, its unique sound, and the political and social issues facing U.S. Latinos and Latin Americans, Salsa consciente evokes the overarching cultural-nationalist idea of Latinidad (Latin-ness). Analysis of over 120 different salsa songs spanning sixty years, the book draws on lyrical and musical perspectives to argue that the urban Latino identity expressed in Salsa consciente was constructed largely from diasporic, de territorialized, and at times imagined cultural memory. From this perspective, Latino / Latin American identity is in part based on African and Indigenous experience, especially as it relates to Spanish colonialism. A unique study of the intersection of Salsa and Latino and Latin American identity, Salsa consciente appeals to scholars of ethnic studies and fans of salsa music alike.ANDRÉS ESPINOZA AGURTO serves as assistant professor in the Department of Music at Florida Atlantic University. He studied Afro-Cuban percussion at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (Cuba), graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a degree in jazz composition, and holds an MA in music from the University of York (England). He received his PhD in musicology and ethnomusicology from Boston University. He is also a composer, musical director, and percussionist for his own group, Ayé, an also a consecrated drummer in the lineage of Añá Ilu Kan and is currently conducting research on the lineage, performance practice, and aesthetics of Afro-Cuban batá drummers and drumming. He is an active participant in the Percussive Arts Society where he serves as the cochair of the World Percussion Committee. Stephanie and I spoke about her life and career up to the present day. Stephanie worked as a television reporter for nearly a decade covering the news and being a weekend anchor until she decided to leave the role in September 2020. We spoke about where her initial love for travel came from. Stephanie became fluent in Spanish and then went on to live in the Dominican Republic and Colombia. She also lived in Colombia while participating in a Fulbright Programme. We spoke about her book 'Blacktrekking-My journey living in Latin America,' a memoir of her journey in Latin America, and why it was important to share her story. Stephanie spoke to me about her blog, Blacktrekking. Her aim is to share family travelling experiences, and motherly tips. She also talked about the importance of wanting to highlight destinations that focus on Black History and Culture. We spoke about some specific trips of hers on this. She is also looking to perhaps write a children's book to educate them about Black History on subjects that aren't covered in school. Stephanie is married, and her son was born in June. We discussed some of her hobbies, which include Salsa Dancing and working out in the gym. It was a pleasure talking to Stephanie. I wish her the best of luck on her blog, and I look forward to seeing what she does next. You can also watch the episode on my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/IdwyvhRPRik).
