Rapid Transformation: How to Unlock Your Potential   Takeaway: In this episode, Erin Pheil discusses her unique subtraction approach to help people rapidly transform by identifying and removing lifelong root causes.   Money Learnings: Erin received mixed messages about money from her parents growing up, leading to confusion around spending and saving. She had an early tendency to want to save money obsessively.   Bio: With degrees in psychology and digital media, and after running an award-winning, nationally-ranked consulting agency for 16 years, Erin founded the MindFix Group in 2018. She and her team provide ultra-rapid, root problem removal for the minds of leaders, entrepreneurs, and those ready to experience real, lasting positive change.  Clients work with her team when they're ready to connect with themselves more deeply, get out of their own way, and when they're ready to finally move past frustrations such as procrastination, perfectionism, self-sabotage, anxiety, feeling disconnected, feeling unfulfilled, fear of success or failure, fear of conflict, anger, difficulty saying no, imposter syndrome, etc.--once and for all.     Highlights from this episode:    Focusing personal development on personal motivations and goals can lead to rapid transformation of lifelong issues. A "subtraction" approach of identifying and removing root causes creates faster, more complete change than just managing symptoms. Psychedelic-assisted therapy shows promise for positively impacting many mental health and personal growth areas. With the right understanding and techniques, even lifelong struggles can be shifted dramatically in months by addressing core issues. Consistent, incremental progress towards a future vision balances enjoying the present and preparing for tomorrow.   Facebook: http://facebook.com/erinpheil   Website: http://mindfixgroup.com   Bonus for episode listeners: http://mindfixgroup.com/podcast     Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. How can you dislodge toxic thoughts and transform your mindset? After struggling with chronic pain and deep-seated anxiety and depression, Erin Pheil discovered a way to thwart negative thoughts before they start. She identifies the three origins of mental stress as harmful beliefs, unprocessed memories from the past, and stagnant identities. Eliminating negativity involves correlating the pattern to its source and extracting it to shift your mindset. You're a busy business leader, a coach, an entrepreneur. You've taken time out of your busy schedule to be here today. So welcome to the show. Erin Pheil: Thank you for having me. It's great to be here. Brian Webb: Yeah, it's a pleasure to have you here. So I want you to let the audience know what it is that you and your company do to have a positive impact in people's lives. Share that with the audience today, if you don't mind. Erin Pheil: Sure. So I am the founder of The MindFix Group and we specialize in providing rapid root problem removal for your mind. So leaders and entrepreneurs and high performers hire us when they want to get out of their own way. And we help them by rapidly and permanently first identifying and then eliminating their biggest mental roadblocks and barriers and the things that are holding them back. So that could look like anything ranging from perfectionism to procrastination, fear of success, fear of failure, fear of being seen, anger issues, difficulty saying no, imposter syndrome, things like that. Because most leaders get stuck or find themselves in their own way at some points along their journey. Bottom line is our work allows leaders and high performers to eliminate their stickiest blind spots and their fears, and their insecurities, self-doubt, and anxieties that are holding them back. Usually in just a couple of hours a week for a short period of time. Brian Webb: Wow. That's interesting. One of the things that you taught me is that the quote-unquote, personal development space is a 14 billion dollar a year revenue industry. I had no idea it was that much. And I know that people, I've seen people and I've even done it, they can spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on programs to help them improve their lives. And yet these programs don't seem to always create lasting change for most people. Why do you think that is? Erin Pheil: Yeah. From my experience, what I have seen is that a lot of the programs that are out there focus on addition. And when I say addiction, I mean that they focus on trying to help people cope with their challenges. So people have these issues say, avoidance or procrastination and they'll try to go to coaching or they'll do personal development, or they'll go to a seminar. And what they learn are tools of how to deal with their challenges. You need to meditate longer, you need to write more in your journal, you need to cope with this challenge. We're going to give you some balm and we're going to give you more bandaids to try and make you feel better and cope with the issue. When at the end of the day that doesn't solve the root problem of why the issue is there in the first place. Erin Pheil: So our approach and the way that we have seen so many people truly be able to heal from their challenges is when you can dive in and identify why someone is stuck and why they're experiencing challenges and problems. And then you subtract. So instead of adding more and adding more responsibilities, and adding tools, and adding tactics, and adding techniques to cope with your challenges, if we can subtract the root cause of why you're experiencing it, then the challenge can go away and it can go away rapidly. And you're not left with the frustrating challenge of trying to continue maintaining or coping with it for the long term. Brian Webb: And when you say subtract, I'm curious, do you mean helping them to overcome head trash? Or is it a matter of removing a relationship out of their life or getting rid of a habit? What do you mean when you say subtract? Erin Pheil: That's a really good question. So when I say subtract, I mean, we want to go in and identify the root cause of why someone is experiencing what they're experiencing. Brian Webb: Okay. Erin Pheil: And then pull that out. So instead of addition, instead of more tools, and tactics, and strategies that help people cope with their challenges, we want to subtract. It's almost like instead of putting more bandaids and balm over the splinter, let's go in, find the splinter that's causing the pain and pull it out. So when it comes to mental challenges or mind challenges, sometimes people call this head trash. We might call it belief systems or belief structures, competing commitments, internal conflicts. There are a lot of things that can be the root causes of people's mind challenges. Brian Webb: When you talk about conflicting conclusions, is that akin to conflicting wishes? I was once taught that I read Jean Chatzky's book called The Difference. She's a financial analyst on TV. And she talks about why do people not achieve their financial goals or their health goals? And she brought up the fact that it's because all of us, we have conflicting wishes. So yes, someone thinks of themselves. Yes. I want to save for my future, but I also want to enjoy my life today and go buy myself something nice. Does that play a part in the therapy that you're providing to people? Erin Pheil: Yeah. Sometimes when we can uncover what we call competing commitments, we'll find that different parts of our mind want different things and we're often not aware of it. So as an example, there was an entrepreneur I worked with just this week and he was feeling very stuck and he was finding that he wasn't doing what he needed to do to move his business forward. And he could not for the life of him, figure out why. He kept going to kind of, seminars and business-building workshops and working with a mentor. But he just could not bring himself to move forward and take action. And he didn't know why. And so what he found was that we found quite a few kind of competing commitments. And what was really interesting is we found that he kept beating himself up. And at the end of the day, his true goals, he wanted to accept himself and love himself and he wasn't. Brian Webb: Wow. Erin Pheil: And as we got into a conversation, what we uncovered is that part of him had a fear that if he loved himself, if he accepted himself, if he said he was okay with himself, that would completely prevent him from moving forward. Part of him was absolutely convinced that if he was okay with himself, he would have no more desire to change or improve or grow. So here he is wanting to accept himself and another part going, you can never accept yourself because then you won't move forward. And it was keeping him in a double bind because he wasn't moving forward because he was beating himself up. Brian Webb: That's fascinating. Oh my goodness. Erin Pheil: Right. Brian Webb: Wow. Erin Pheil: And he had no idea of this conflict until we were able to kind of go in and gently explore this. Well, of course, he couldn't move forward. Of course, he was absolutely frozen because this part of him, this hidden part underneath absolutely was terrified that if he was okay with himself, he would lose everything and he would just never move forward. And so when you can uncover these double binds, these mental knots, these competing desires and commitments that we have, suddenly bringing that awareness to your mind allows us to get unstuck versus here's another tool or let's map out your schedule for the week when these really deeper elements are kind of sitting below the surface powering you and keeping you stuck. Brian Webb: Do you find that, let's just take this particular client or these philosophies, these conflicting kind of philosophies. Were they self-imposed or was it a learned philosophy from his upbringing? Erin Pheil: Oh, I mean, everything is learned, right? Brian Webb: Yeah. Okay. Erin Pheil: We pick these things up from somewhere in our life, whether we see things modeled by people that we respect. We learn things in business classes, and courses, and books, or school that we feel are true. Or we subconsciously absorb them when we're little kids. Brian Webb: Yeah. Erin Pheil: We pick these things up from somewhere. Oftentimes they do come from childhood, but then those things can clash with what we learn later on in our adult lives. Brian Webb: I would imagine that there's different ways that people can find themselves feeling stuck, whether it be their career, or their income, their relationships. What are a couple of those? And what advice do you typically find in yourself giving to your clients? I'm curious. Erin Pheil: Okay. Let's break this down into two different questions to make sure I can give you solid answers here. So the first question is where are different areas in life that people find themselves feeling stuck? Is that correct? Brian Webb: Well more so. I think what I'm asking is not where do they find themselves in life feeling stuck, but what are some of the common reasons that people get stuck? Erin Pheil: Oh, why do people get stuck? Gotcha. Gotcha. So what we find so often, assuming that again, assuming there's not something going on in the body or the nervous system and people are feeling like they can't move forward, we often find that people are experiencing counterproductive thoughts, counterproductive emotions, and counterproductive actions or lack of actions because of what they believe to be true. So often our beliefs are running the show. They're like these lines of code and programming that are determining how we show up every day. I always laugh and give an example of like, if you believe that cats are dangerous and you go out for a walk and you see a cat, that's going to impact the thoughts that you have when you see the cat, that's going to impact how you feel when you see the cat, that's going to impact the actions you take when you see the cat. All of those things, your entire experience around a cat can be influenced by a belief. Brian Webb: Yeah. Erin Pheil: And we have so many beliefs, conflicting beliefs, and beliefs that we picked up when we were younger and they truly do... We walk around going, no, I have full control over everything. And our conscious mind does, but our subconscious mind where these beliefs and the programming exist really are running 90% of our decisions and our choice and our actions as we go throughout our day. So you can imagine what say a leader or an entrepreneur might experience if they have a simple belief like asking for help makes me look weak and they're committed to looking like a strong leader for their team. Brian Webb: Right. Erin Pheil: How that's going to impact what the they do and don't do over the course of a month, regardless of the advice they get or how great their team is. So these unique lines of code that we each have that are all slightly different, are running the show. So to circle back to your question, what are some of the reasons people get stuck? So often times we find that their beliefs, which are sometimes hidden from their awareness, are running the show in that they have problematic or limiting beliefs that are keeping them stuck in loops and ways of being that aren't serving them. Brian Webb: I've had the good fortune to have many mentors in my life, many of which, by the way, never have known that I'm alive. They're people I've not even met. One of those in a huge way, his name was Jim Ron, and many people in the audience may have heard of him. He's actually passed away, broke my heart when it happened. But he said, more than once he says the duck has to fly south every winter because it's in the genetic code and the duck cannot disobey his genetic code. Right. He said, but we as human beings, we can change our minds today and move in a completely different direction tomorrow. And I feel like it's a little bit what you're saying to us today. How realistic is it for someone to experience a permanent lasting change in behavior in just a few months, especially if they've been with a therapist for a decade and they have been to all of Tony Robbins's events? Speak into that, if you don't mind. Erin Pheil: Sure. We see it. We see it a lot. Before I got into this work, I never would've believed it myself. I started therapy when I was a little kid. Brian Webb: Wow. Erin Pheil: I used to come home crying from school as a seven-year-old and just be inconsolable. And my parents started sending me to therapy just as a young kid. So I have done that route, therapy, and coaching off and on for so many years. It always felt frustrating because I would talk with someone, but nothing ever felt like it really changed or really shifted. It just felt like I was going to vent to someone. And that was my experience. I know there's a lot of really great therapists and coaches and experts out there, but I know that for many of us change feels like it's out of our reach. And yet when I started getting into this type of work, into the work of transformation and rapid transformation, which even three months compared to 20 years is quite quick. Brian Webb: Sure. Erin Pheil: We see people change. We see people in a matter of months come in with challenges, and fears, and ways of being, and harsh inner critics, and inability to move forward and perform. And after, within a few months time, three months, sometimes four or five, but it was in a matter of a couple of hours a week, we watch people shift. And we've gone back to our original clients from years ago, and asked them, Hey, how is the problem, the challenges that originally worked on, are they still gone? And the answers are, it's an overwhelming yes. Erin Pheil: When you pull out the challenges that you're dealing with and you pull out the root causes, right, you pull the seed of the weed instead of chopping down the flower every time, you really can have something go away and stop holding you back for the long term. Now, this doesn't mean you won't have a bad day, or you'll never have a negative thought, but these challenges no longer hold you back. And we see it day in and day out, and you can look at our results page and see just the hundreds of people who have had that very experience. It is absolutely possible. Brian Webb: Wow. Let me ask you this. Would you mind, would you be comfortable sharing an example of someone who you've worked with, who they thought nothing would work for them. Right. But they've experienced the transformation you've been talking about today. Do you mind sharing an anonymous example of course? Erin Pheil: Sure. Absolutely. We worked with an entrepreneur who was building a number of different online communities, and each of her communities had thousands and thousands of members. She was working with a mentor who was giving her guidance on how she was to scale her business. She was told that she needed to begin promoting herself, being on podcasts, being on interviews, and doing more PR work. And she was also told, Hey, it's time you start letting go of some of your work because you're doing work that you really should have more of an assistant and a team doing for you. You're too busy for what you're doing. So this woman needed to delegate more. And then also start being seen as the leader of her company. Brian Webb: Okay. Erin Pheil: And I think about four or five, six months passed, and she realized that she hadn't done any of it. She kept procrastinating. She kept avoiding. She was getting opportunities to speak and somehow kept turning them down. Something would always come up. Brian Webb: Okay. Erin Pheil: And she wasn't building her team. So what ended up happening is we worked with her for a couple of months and she picked up the phone one day and called me and she's like, Erin, you'll never guess what. I said, what? She's like, I am a delegating machine now. I've brought a couple of people onto my team. I'm no longer terrified. I can let go of some of this control, Brian Webb: Wow. Erin Pheil: And it feels amazing. And also I've started saying yes to all of these PR and media opportunities. I've been in the Washington Post. I've been in the, she was in Entrepreneur Magazine. She was in the Huffington Post. She was in a number of different, really big media outlets for the work that she was doing with Facebook. And it was absolutely beautiful. She said it's been easy. It's been fun. I'm going live on Facebook and social media multiple times a day. Brian Webb: Wow. Erin Pheil: The fear of being seen is just gone. And it was like I was talking to a different person and she was just so vibrant. So someone who had been putting this off and weeks, and weeks, and weeks, and weeks, and weeks with no movement suddenly came around and was like, this is enjoyable and I'm loving it and the fear's gone and I'm just taking off. And thank you so much. So that was a fun example. Brian Webb: One, thanks for being here. I feel like this has been a therapy session for me today too. I feel like I should be lying on a sofa somewhere. And I always feel like I get to learn and glean from every guest I have on. And you have been no exception. So one, thank you for the impact that you're having in the world. Because clearly, you're just helping so many people. And tell the audience that wants to learn how to find you, where's the best place to connect with you, learn more about your services that you provide. Where is the best place for them to do that? Erin Pheil: Sure. Best place is definitely our website, mindfixgroup.com. We have a free training. We have a long results page where you can see what's possible. We have case studies and if anyone wants to reach out, they're welcome to either apply or learn more just about what we do. I'm also available on Facebook, on social media. Today marks International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to all the amazing ladies around the world. On this special day, we’d like to pay tribute to the badass women who we have had the pleasure to have as guests on the show during 2020. Check out some of the awesome strategies and tactics which we have covered via these badass gals!   Sue Rice - Storytelling Tips Nicknamed the ‘female David Ogilvy’, Sue Rice is famous for writing award-winning copy for countless entrepreneurs and we chatted about her email copywriting tactics which enable her to deliver record-breaking open rates. One idea is to make connections between things that are seemingly unrelated. We are swimming in a sea of metaphors and part of it is just being conscious of it. One way to make it interesting and bring it into a fresher light, is extensive reading, watching movies, etc. The magic is in everything that’s around us.  Sue listens to the news on the BBC, which has very clever writers. She also uses an app called Clipboard where you can pick the categories you want to follow. It’s important to do a little bit of collective brainstorming every day to see what people are talking about, otherwise, you are defining what you are doing for them on your terms, not theirs. You want to be entering the conversation in their head and if you are not watching that, it’s hard to do.   Molly Mahoney - Facebook Engagement Molly Mahoney of The PrePared Performer, is legendary for her Facebook marketing skills. She’s a wizard at doing Facebook lives and getting organic reach. We chatted all about how Molly is able to get high ticket coaching clients, right from Facebook, how to grow Facebook groups, and how to get interaction on Facebook pages with her four-step process. We loved her advice in regards to getting more engagement on Facebook. She tells us that the rules have changed for bots and there are four types of messages, one of them being a confirmed event reminder. When they comment on the post, they confirm to the bot they want to be reminded of more information. Another way to use this is that when they say yes, you ask them if they want to be reminded about all of your content coming out.  Once they confirm, you want to make sure that button opens up to another piece of the conversation so you are engaging in another conversation within that 24 hours.  Another strategy is the “Unlock and Share Button”, so when they are in your bot after they get the show notes or whatever it is that you are giving, send another message a minute later that says you have a bonus gift they can get if they share your video, and if they want to access, just click here to unlock and share the video.    Lisa Cherney - The More You GFR, The More Impact (And Money) You Will Make Lisa Cherney, now known as The Queen of Clarity, is the host of the ground-breaking confession-based GFR Podcast show for successful soulful entrepreneurs and founder of the GFR Squad, a lively community that is serious about embracing the GFR lifestyle and living a life without regrets. One of her GFR commandments is “Don’t worry about being normal” and the confession is “Where are you not speaking your truth?” That’s where the juice is, determining what is your soapbox. If you weren’t worrying about offending anyone or breaking any laws, what would you want to say? People are too concerned about what strategy they are going to use, but eventually, the strategy will emerge. The more you get real, the more impact you will make. So the first thing is to determine if you are ready. If you’ll do all the strategies and make the investment, this is where to go next. If you are ready, choose the confession question that hits you in the gut and go from there. Just pick the one question, take some time with it, and it will do wonders.   Sara Christensen - Defending Your Business Our chat with Sara was really eye-opening as she talks about how one little post sent her world in a spiral, leading to an all-out war waged on her business, thousands of hateful messages, and even death threats. You want to be extra careful what you are putting out there and what you are involved in. If you don’t already have procedures in place of your social media and email communications, you should make sure that whatever you put out in the world is not going to offend or piss someone off. If you are using outside resources for VA’s, you may run a risk. You don’t want someone working on your team, that’s not as invested or doesn’t understand the complications of posting something that might be harmful. Understand the power of social media which is so amazing yet also be weaponized against you. Be mindful to use it as a building block for your business. Consider if there other ways to diversify where your clients are coming from. Ask yourself, “What if your social media channels got taken away today - what other plans do you have in place?”   Ilana Wechsler - In-Market Audience Targeting  We also chatted with Ilana Wechsler of Green Arrow Digital, who is a former data analyst, turned Pay Per Click marketing expert. She detailed her paid ad puzzle technique and how to make the different pieces of your marketing puzzle work together.  Google is shifting away from the concept of targeting content science to targeting more in regards to who you are as a person, which is like identity-based targeting. One of the ways they are doing this is with in-market audiences, which is very short-term intent-based searching. So you can match your Facebook targeting to Google’s in-market audiences. For example, consider if you are suddenly in the market to buy a car, where you don’t normally search online for car information. Then there are what’s called affinity audiences which is your long-term behavior or things you are looking at online often. So basically you're starting with the people that are already going to your website and looking at who they are and what their actions are, and then slowly expanding out more and more as you get additional data on who these people are that are already coming to your site. If you find those audiences work, especially on the Google side of things, you can apply that in-market audience to your search quadrant and also to the YouTube quadrant. It's a process of systematically building out your puzzle, based on data and if something doesn't work then it doesn't make sense to apply it to a different quadrant.     Susie Moore - Removing Your Blocks We loved chatting with Susie Moore, author of Stop Checking Your Likes as it’s something we’ve all fallen into. One of the things she discussed was how to remove your blocks. First, you need to state as a fact, that you are worthy of receiving. Susie uses the example of being out on a hike with your friends and you go missing. Would your friends consider if you were worth finding, asking if you were thin enough, popular enough, etc.? If this is true in the physical world, this is true on all levels. Even if you have a million likes or followers, it does not alter your worthiness. If you can accept this as a fact and don’t question it, you will know that you are worthy.  Most people spend too long reaching out to people because of fear of rejection. Often it means it’s just not the right fit or the right time. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. Most people give up after the 2nd or 3rd follow-up. If you keep going, people eventually cave. A confident person is simply willing to be rejected, and to them, it’s no big deal.    Lisa Buyer - Social Media Platforms With Traction We had a great chat with Lisa from PR Secrets on using social media for branding and PR purposes. She covers a host of topics such as newsjacking, chatbots, futurists, SEO, visual reporting, podcasting, and what’s new in putting together a press release.  One of the things we discussed was the latest platforms that have traction. For example, if you are featured in a third-party publication, you can take that article and put it on Facebook and run ads to it targeting people who work at other media publications. It’s a win-win, as the journalist is getting more exposure, and you are getting that third-party credibility, so it’s a smart modern day PR strategy. You can target the publication’s following and run $1 a day ads, as taught by Dennis Hu. You can also take that targeting strategy to other platforms.  Tik Tok is the most talked about social media platform lately, and while Lisa doesn't  have any clients where it’s a good match, from a storytelling standpoint it’s entertaining. From a PR perspective, instead of having her clients start an account, they are looking to share content to the influencer’s audience where the influencer would talk about the brand and create content around a theme. One cool thing about Tik Tok is there are so many cool filters and ways to create videos that are very creative, then take those videos and republish it to your main social channels.    Felicia Pagesh - Campaign Tactics  We had a great chat with Felicia Pagesh of Activate Branding, who dove into fun topics such as conversion optimizations, webinars, landing pages, and other useful techie talks. One tip she gave us is that when you are building out your campaign, you should already know what the objections are that people have. That is what’s included in your sales sequence to overcome those objections. Everything in your webinar should also be designed to overcome those objections, so instead of creating separate FAQs as part of your follow-up, you can pop that transcription sequence into your follow-up for anyone who matches the behavior of someone who is interested but hasn’t bought yet.  Also, give people an option to download an mp4 into an mp3 to listen to your webinar. If you have an audible call to action, keep your URL very simple and easy to follow. As long as it’s trackable, it’s worth testing. It doesn't really cost much more time or money to repurpose and it’s like getting free sales.   Erin Pheil - Fixing Your Mind Erin Pheil from MindFix Group chatted with us all about fixing your mind and getting past those mental roadblocks that get you stuck. You can deal with perfectionism by being compassionate with yourself. You will be able to clear out that pattern so you don’t have to deal with it on a constant basis. A pattern can be emotional or behavioral. For example, we may be triggered into getting angry when someone gives us feedback or we may get anxious whenever we are on camera. Other people may have behavioral patterns like every time it’s time to talk about money, you change the subject. We have these different behaviors and emotions we get stuck in over and over, and if you can identify the pattern, you can work backward and clear it out once you know what it is and what you want to change. Once you do that, it clears up so much energy, space, and time in your life. At the core, humans behave according to what they believe to be true. So if you are walking down the street and see a cat and you believe they are dangerous, you will avoid it. But if you believe cats are awesome, you’ll go over to pet it. When you have a pattern, you take a fundamental truth that humans act based on what they believe to be true. If you're acting or experiencing feelings in a certain way, you believe something that's keeping you looped in there.    Gabby Bernstein - How To Detach We chatted with Gabby Bernstein, author of Super Attractor who gave us some very practical tools to work through some tough stuff that we are all going through in our personal lives. She also talked about what she refers to as her “Rage on the Page” method and the benefits of listening to a specific playlist while writing. Gabby has been practicing with a method based on Dr. John Sarno’s work, who was known for healing back pain, and whose work was based on the fact that our physical pain is a manifestation of our impermissible rage and there is a mind-body prescription to heal that. Gabby has renamed a similar prescription given to her by a friend that deals with journaling, calling it “rage on the page”.  The basis of this is that you journal about the rage for 20 minutes. Even if you don’t think you have rage, it could be as simple as thinking “Why did I eat that bad thing this morning?” Next, meditate for 20 minutes. Gabby also puts on bi-lateral music. She practices a therapeutic method called EMDR, and this is similar to stimulating to each side of the brain. When you start to stimulate the bilateral brain functioning, it allows the resource part of your brain to access some of the information stored hidden and in many ways to see. It allows your brain to unpack what has been hidden.    Kim Krause Schwalm - Copywriter Hiring Tips Kim Krause Schwalm joined us on the show and gave us a boatload of awesome strategies and insight from her long copywriting career. When hiring a copywriter, look at their writing and their portfolio and see if they are passionate, curious, and put hard work into the promo. If you are not well versed in copywriters and are reading a sample and you can see if the headline grabs you (read it at night when you are tired) and makes you want to read further.   Sometimes it’s hard to write your own copy and one thing you can do is to ask someone to give you a critique. If you like what they say, maybe that’s the person you want to hire. That’s one way to see how they work as well. As for communication falling off, the question is how are you paying them? Sometimes if you go back and forth on price, then you probably don’t want to work with them. It often comes down to whether you are getting what you pay for, and you still want to make sure you are getting a good value as it can be a big investment. Have a fair deal and pay them 25-50% upfront. You could have a phase where you have different steps that allow you to move along to minimize some of the risks, plus they will have some built-in milestones they have to meet. Most professional copywriters will agree to a schedule upfront so everyone is on the same page.    Laura Gale - Getting Your Book Published Laura Gale, author, and fellow podcaster joined to talk all about the step-by-step method she uses to guide people to finally get that book published. People discount their own stories as not being compelling all the time. There’s a lot of interesting things in the day-to-day to give people a peek behind the scenes. If you can pinpoint something to one specific moment where something surprised you, or it was unexpected, then those are the moments that are really interesting. Story structure has become a bit of an obsession and people are overthinking it. While the hero’s journey is great, it can take a lot out of it and not every story is going to fit that structure. The more you can rely on emotion and specific moments, the stronger your story will be. For a long time ghostwriting was seen as cheating, but if you are an entrepreneur you want to have other people taking care of the stuff you are not best at, and writing is a skill that takes a lot of time to get good at. The idea that it’s not really your book if you didn’t write it yourself doesn’t ring true. When Laura puts it together, it’s all their voice and all of the material and style is generated by the client. She is more of a vessel to get that story published. Most celebrities who have ever written a book are almost always ghostwritten.    Melanie Benson - How To Spice Up Your Topic If It Is Less Than Exciting On our episode with Melanie Benson, she gave us some great tips on how to follow the ‘golden thread’ to pull the right audience into your world, what to do if you are just starting out in your podcasting journey and how to define your audience and make sure they are a good fit for your business. One way is to think of a formula that connects back to your work (not the Smart Goal formula which is way overused). Melanie created a formula called the ROCS Method: R - Relevant O - Outcome Driven C - Credibility Boosting - people often miss this but try to include it in your intro. Talk about case studies or client successes so people pay attention. Keep it natural, don’t be a name-dropper. S - Specific, find a way to put specificity in it, i.e. can you do it in 90 days? Is it a 4 part formula? If your message isn’t converting, chances are something in this formula is wrong.   References and Links Mentioned: Are you ready to be EPIC with us?! “When a belief is created, it literally becomes a pair of glasses over your eyes. As you move forward in life, all the different events that you experience get filtered through that lens.” Erin Pheil wanted to feel differently. She was desperate to let go of the constant judgements and the feeling of not being good enough, but she couldn’t. Erin turned to countless courses and therapies, but despite changing her habits, thoughts, and actions, nothing seemed to stick. Then finally, after a 3-year battle with pain and depression, Erin discovered the ‘magic’ formula and got out of her own way. Not only was this formula uncomplicated, but it generated long-lasting results quickly. As the founder of the MindFix Group, Erin shares her process with entrepreneurs and high-achievers to help them get unstuck. Her secret? Unravelling and rewiring the beliefs that lead to self-sabotage and disappointing results. Her MindFix mind-transformation program has a 96.1% success rate, and Erin’s work has featured in countless books, magazines, and newspapers. But the beliefs directing your adult world weren’t chosen by you. Instead, they got cemented during childhood - and chances are they’re keeping you from your extraordinary life. But don’t worry, because now you’ve got Erin! In this episode, Erin explains how changing your beliefs changes your life. Here’s an overview of the topics we discuss. How are beliefs made? The most powerful question an adult can ask themselves when interacting with a child. Why basic self-care is essential as you navigate to a new set of beliefs. What roles do feelings play in our beliefs? Why reinterpreting past events can powerfully reshape your current beliefs. Why we resist or reject evidence that conflicts with our core beliefs [even if new evidence would serve us better]Why it’s safe to let go of beliefs - even the ones that have served you. How to unpick unhelpful beliefs. Why an internal locus of control makes it easier to experience change. The best time to start using affirmations. Brutal honesty and the three empowering questions to ask yourself each day.   Introducing Erin Pheil, the Founder and Mindset Master of The MindFix Group. Founded early 2018. The MindFix Group is a collaboration between a small number of highly-trained, deeply knowledgeable, passionate mind-experts with a simple purpose: Deliver revolutionary programs that alleviate the self-sabotage our own minds create that hold us all back, and help high performers achieve even more-rapidly and with minimal effort.   TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE: Mindset – where it all started (13:53) Trusting that ‘intuition’ mindset and going with it (16:40) Creating a beautiful experience (20:00) When things coincide with your emotions (27:00) Creating a transformation in someone (30:40) Exercise for the mind (34:00) Bringing awareness to your emotions   HEAR MORE ABOUT ERIN PHEIL Erin always had a deep sense that she was inadequate, never good enough, and unsuccessful. These thoughts negatively impacted everything she did. Mental barriers completely held her back from ever deeply enjoying the rich life she dreamt of. Then out of nowhere, she was hit with chronic pain that completely sidelined her for 2.5 years. After spending thousands to figure out why she was suffering, she sat opposite a therapist one day who told her ‘you are in pain because your mental lens is dirty, and it’s skewing how you experience the world’. Erin needed to figure out how to change her mindset. She walked out the door and knew she needed to move forward. And today, her company MindFix is helping people relieve suffering with an astounding 96.1% success rate.   CONNECT WITH ERIN Facebook   CONNECT WITH SASHKA Facebook Instagram Pinterest Twitter LinkedIn   Want to be a guest on the podcast? Apply to be featured on the Visionary on Fire Podcast here.   SUBSCRIBE ON

So, this podcast is about sharing inspiring stories of people doing meaningful work. The stories of people making a positive difference in the lives of others. And, if you are a regular listener or if you know me personally, you know that I believe that each of us has a story to share. A story that can help others. But you know what’s way more important than what I believe? It’s what you believe. Too many people are stuck and their best self is not showing up each day. Why? Often it’s because that best self is shrouded in ego, fears, limiting beliefs and other delusions. And that is why I am excited to introduce you to today’s guest, Erin Pheil. After a long battle with pain and depression Erin discovered the root cause behind what was holding her back. The self-sabotage that was preventing her from living to her full potential. So she founded The MindFix Group with a simple purpose: to share her journey and to deliver programs that alleviate the self-sabotage our own minds create that hold us back. Erin’s work on instincts and human behavior have been featured in books, magazines, podcasts, webinars and keynote presentations at conferences. If you are engaging in behaviors that don’t serve you or are avoiding behaviors that will benefit you, then this is the episode for you. Today’s guest is Erin Field, founder of the MindFix Group. She joins Charlie to jam about why it’s so hard to rewrite stories and change self-sabotaging scripts. They also talk about some things you can do when you’re tired of the same choices leading to the same actions. Key Takeaways:[0:05] - Charlie’s new book, Start Finishing: How to Go From Idea to Done is out now! Productivity is how we become our best selves in the world. The book covers tools, practices, and mindsets that will help you finish the stuff your soul is yearning to do. There are contributions from Charlie’s friends, colleagues, and teachers. If you’d like to pre-order a copy, click the link below.[4:00] - Erin ran a successful web agency for almost seventeen years, until she realized that it wasn’t something she wanted to do for the rest of her life. The fear around this thought was that her career was all she had ever known. After a series of rock bottoms, she started to see a therapist who showed her that the way she was looking at the world and seeing things was affecting everything else.[8:05] - She devoted all of her energy into learning how she could actually change what was going on in her head. When it became replicable, she realized this work was what she wanted to be doing. Our operating beliefs are the ones that are doing the driving, and tend to be the ones that drive our self-sabotage. [11:25] - Emotion drives action, and the language we use to describe things actually becomes the way we see and operate in the world. The stories, or head trash, tends to dominate. The piece of head trash impacts how events occur to us. This is the same principle as confirmation bias.[15:10] - People often struggle with what their “true” or “authentic” selves are. Different people can have different truths, and maybe the more important question is asking "what’s useful?" That can get us much further than “what’s true?” [17:50] - One of the most frustrating things about head trash is that we often realize the story we’re telling ourselves, and we know it’s not useful, but it’s difficult to change it. People hold on to these beliefs or stories because they feel like they have seen evidence in the world that it is true. [20:20] - In addition to our own stories, our cultures also have stories that become part of our mental narrative as evidence. When we have a belief that already has some evidence, every new bit of evidence that confirms the belief strengthens it, and we easily write off anything that doesn’t confirm it.[23:20] - The body keeps the score with all of our stories and head trash, and this can eventually manifest itself physically. Erin talks about some of the tests they use with their clients, and one of them is whether or not they can feel something in their bodies when they have those thoughts.[26:40] - People must learn to accept that it’s okay to have conflicting beliefs. They only accept one, and when they don’t acknowledge that they feel a certain way, they tend to suppress those beliefs or push them away. It takes energy to push things away, and when we accept them, sometimes the power dissolves.[31:20] - There is a connection between the body and the mind, but there are also some disanalogies that keep us stuck. It’s not quite as obvious when we push away mental beliefs versus physical manifestation.[32:55] - Erin talks about our beliefs and stories surrounding what’s possible with change. Our stories can anchor us down and prevent us from seeing our other successes.[36:45] - When it comes to goal setting with contradictory beliefs, Charlie talks about changing the directive. Instead of saying you can or can’t lose that weight or save that money, remain open and change the directive to “what would happen if I…” This curiosity is a useful tool to uncover what people’s specific head trash is.[41:40] - The work of uprooting head trash is daily work, because there are new things that pop up when we get rid of one thing. If it feels like there are other beliefs sprouting up, what you think you got rid of may not have been the root of the problem.[44:30] - The first step to getting unstuck from self-sabotage stories is to identify and uncover what the roots of our head trash are. Step two is dissolving and eliminating them, which is the main work of MindFix. The million dollar question for people to start asking themselves is “What would I have to believe to be true in order to keep experiencing this pattern over and over again?”[47:45] - Erin invites listeners to seriously ask themselves that million dollar question above, at least ten times a day. It is one of the most insightful questions that will help you learn about yourself in a short amount of time. Ask yourself that question and see what shows up. Mentioned in This Episode:Productive FlourishingStart Finishing, by Charlie GilkeyThe MindFix GroupThe Metaphors We Live By, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson

“ Our actions aren’t random. What we believe to be true determines how we experience life, which determines the thoughts and emotions we have, which determines our actions.” - Erin Phiel (9:17-9:53) Kyle Willis: Marketing from the Roosevelt Room Every entrepreneur eventually has to face the mindset barriers that keep them from achieving what they want to achieve. Your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions influence your behaviors. If you’re struggling to grow your business, then you need to explore the root cause of your beliefs and ideas. “So many challenges that people think are permanent or are character traits are just patterns that we can shift and change in a short period of time.” - Erin Phiel (26:24-27:05) Erin Phiel is the CEO of Mindfix Group, a collection of experts specializing in helping entrepreneurs and other high achievers overcome the mental roadblocks that hold them back. Erin began her journey running a nationally ranked website consulting agency for almost 17 years. In her work with clients, she saw many challenges they all shared. These include challenges that exist outside of ourselves, such as growing and streamlining teams and generating more revenue. But there are also patterns related to the roadblocks that cause entrepreneurs to get stuck in their professional and personal lives. What are Mindset Barriers? Some of the patterns that result from mindset challenges include perfectionism, chronic fear and self-doubt, and imposter syndrome. But entrepreneurs can change and overcome the obstacles that keep them from achieving real and lasting growth.  Sharing your challenges and limiting beliefs with others can help. It’s hard to see your own behavior when you look out from within. It’s like being inside a bottle and not being able to read the label on the outside. “A byproduct of transformation is that you deal with what you need to on your own to open doors of opportunity that were previously closed.” - Kyle Willis (28:08-28:34) How to Overcome Mindset Barriers. Look closely at whatever it is you believe to be true. One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is spending all their time trying to change their behaviors first. But what you believe to be absolutely true is the engine that drives all your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.  Until you’re able to root out the beliefs that aren’t serving you, it’s going to be difficult to make lasting change in your business and in life. Many entrepreneurs discover they’ve attached their self-worth to their achievements. But this can create internal conflict when they aren’t able to achieve a goal, making it hard to overcome the mental roadblocks they’ve created for themselves. There are other ways to measure your self-worth such as the value you bring to the lives of others. The fear of failure and the need for perfection can prevent you from creating the life and business you want. When it comes to overcoming the mindset barriers that limit entrepreneurs, it’s important to realize that real change can happen fast, and it doesn't have to be hard. Reevaluating what you believe to be true helps you uncover the hidden drivers of behavior. You can create permanent change in a short period of time and open new doors of opportunity for you and everyone around you. Normally on the podcast, we cover many different approaches to help create paid traffic or run successful campaigns. However, what often gets in the way of this is what occurs before you even get to that step; and it happens in our own minds. It’s the limiting beliefs and blockages that stop you from creating the content that you know will help the people that read it and help your business. That’s why we’re very excited to have Erin Pheil on the podcast, as Erin has been instrumental in helping me to identify my strengths and weaknesses, which has allowed me to become the most productive version of myself.   Episode Discussions: What to do about being overwhelmed Big tip on how to start the process of correction How to overcome challenges and keep making progress The importance of mindset Adam’s secret for best performing copy “Head Trash” A better optimal state Look at it and evaluate it Habits of high performers Unwrapping an interpretation The Four Agreements: Don’t take things personally “The Possibilities Game”     [03:27] Erin’s Story Holds a BA in psychology and an MA in social media Co-founder of Mindfix Group, a rapid mind transformation program designed specifically for high achievers and entrepreneurs Mindfix provides relief and the permanent fix that people are always searching for but can’t always find in books and courses   [05:04] Overwhelmed in marketing What should someone do if they don’t know where to start? Find out what the root problem is Overwhelm could be stemming from many different reasons     [06:12] Example: Two Clients Both are overwhelmed, but the feeling comes from different problems No one can just give a step-by-step guide to help universally (which is why self-help books don’t always help   [08:40] Insight to what’s happening Once you notice you’re falling into a pattern, PAUSE Ask yourself: “What are the thoughts that are showing up right now?” Pay attention to the, and write them down Read them out and recognize the pattern   [10:52] Example: Perfectionist Client tried this and realized that she thought everything she did had to be perfect No one can ever do everything perfectly, so she froze   [12:09] Mindset is unbelievably important If you can come into your marketing from a position of power and positivity, that’s where the sales are made It changes the way you write and the way you present yourself It also makes it easier to connect with people on an emotional level   [13:15] Adam’s secret for his best performing ad copy Avoid being in a bad place mentally   [14:03] “Head Trash” The more that’s in your head (especially thoughts of failure) the harder it is to become calm and confident Clear out the trash   [15:19] What’s the next step after you’ve written down your thoughts? There’s no solid solution, but calling attention to it helps Sometimes just writing it down helps your mind to click and stop Working with someone one-on-one is a better way [17:04] Better optimal state “It decreases that charge—the emotion that’s coming from believing everything that’s on that piece of paper”   Viewing through a third person lens helps you to put perspective on your thoughts Once you call attention to it and can separate yourself from it, your confidence goes up   [17:51] Once your confidence goes up, your marketing and business results will go up   [18:17] Look at it and evaluate it Look at what you’ve just written out Ask yourself if it’s true (try to be positive, usually it isn’t!) When the head trash gets cleared out, there’s nothing to write down anymore          [19:25] What are some habits that you’ve seen among the high performers that they’ve instilled in their lives? One process works really well that they engage in regularly… Throughout the day we apply our own interpretations to the events that happen These interpretations fuse together in our minds and we see them as reality We can feel negatively about this “reality” High performers make it a habit to unwrap their interpretation from the event They see these events as neutral, and separate themselves from them Possibilities as to why an event happened become limitless when you don’t involve yourself   [23:19] The Four Agreements Don’t take it personally – what people say to you is a reflection of what they’re going through, it’s not necessarily to do with you The paradigm shift of Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is another example   [24:47] “The Possibilities Game” If you’re triggered by someone cutting you off while driving, the ONLY reason you’re feeling upset is because you’re interpreting it in a certain way Come up with four other possibilities for why the person would do that You can make up stories like “maybe they need to get to the hospital” By telling another story, it breaks up the rigidity of what that “reality” is   [26:09] Jumping to conclusions in marketing Automatically thinking your content isn’t good enough because no one is watching it In reality, it’s a long game; it might just be the wrong time Negative comments on Facebook ads Don’t take it personally   [28:42] When you see those comments (or none at all) be empathetic The more we can empathize with our target market, the better we’ll be at marketing By putting ourselves in their shoes we can create high converting campaigns and messages that resonate   Mentioned in this episode:   Mind Fix Group Erin Pheil (personal website) Facebook page The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruez The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R.
