Before starting the Runway of Dreams Foundation in 2014, Mindy spent 20 years working in fashion as a designer for the INC collection and as a stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue.    Mindy was inspired to start Runway of Dreams after her son Oliver, who has Muscular Dystrophy, dreamed of wearing jeans like everyone else. In 2016, Mindy partnered with Tommy Hilfiger to make fashion history creating the first mainstream adaptive clothing line in the market. Walking the runway is not a piece of cake for somebody with a disability, yet Mindy Scheier has made it her life's mission to make sure that children and adults with physical disabilities can have the same opportunities as anyone else. Bringing fashion into the forefront with accessible design seemed like a natural fit for Mindy, as she has made a career in the fashion industry. Her son, Oliver inspired her to ‘Step Out of Line' and be the catalyst to introducing the fashion industry to the marginalized demographic group of individuals who do not fit the traditional mold.Tommy Hilfiger was one of the first global brand's to embrace Mindy's idea and address this niche market. Through Mindy's advocacy's and Tommy Hilfiger's example, slowly but surely, the fashion industry is following suit. Mindy's nonprofit organization, Runway of Dreams showcases designers with adaptable products worn by models with physical disabilities. Oftentimes, the notion of beauty and disability is not aligned. Mindy has normalized and brought this concept to the fashion industry so that products can be created these individuals in mind. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Mindy Scheier is a fashion designer and a pioneer of the adaptive fashion movement. As the founder of the Runway of Dreams and GAMUT Management, she campaigns to break down stereotypes and make the fashion industry more inclusive. Ever since she designed her first piece of adaptive clothing in 2013, Mindy has been on a mission to highlight the need for mainstream adaptive clothing for people with disabilities. In 2016, Runway of Dreams partnered with Tommy Hilfinger to create Tommy Adaptives, and they have recently announced an exciting new collaboration with Victoria's Secret. In this episode, you'll hear from Mindy Scheier on: (00:04:10) Her aha moment. Mindy recalls the moment when her son Oliver (who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy) told her he wanted to wear jeans rather than sweatpants to school. She describes how his simple request made her realize how important clothing was to his sense of identity and inspired her to address the clothing challenges faced by people with disabilities.(00:45:00) The impact of inclusivity. We talk about the real difference that Runway of Dreams is making in the lives of people with disabilities, and Mindy shares the story of a young model with a prosthetic arm who gained the confidence to wear short-sleeved shirts after taking part in one of its fashion shows. (00:49:26) The adaptive fashion revolution. Mindy praises Victoria's Secret for shifting its focus away from the conventional perception of the ‘perfect' female body and making an effort to serve women with disabilities. As a campaigner, Mindy believes that Runway of Dreams' partnership with Victoria's Secret will be trail-blazing and will help to change the way the world thinks about people with disabilities. (00:51:30) Her commitment to equality in the workplace. Mindy reveals that 80% of people with disabilities are unemployed. So, as the CEO of GAMUT Management, she outlines the measures she takes to make her workplace inclusive and give people with disabilities a voice, a job, and a feeling of being valued.(00:54:24) The importance of dignity and choice. We discuss the role that adaptive clothing can play in restoring dignity to people who have experienced life-changing physical injuries but don't want to change the way they dress.

Before starting the Runway of Dreams Foundation (RoDF) in 2014, Mindy Scheier spent 20 years working in fashion on the design team for the INC collection and as a stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue.   Mindy was inspired to start RoDF after her son Oliver, who has Muscular Dystrophy, dreamed of wearing jeans like everyone else. After using her design skills to adapt a pair that met his needs and increased his confidence, she went on to conduct extensive research to develop modifications that would meet the needs of the largest minority in our world- people with disabilities. The clothing modifications she developed include alternate closures, adjustability and alternative ways to get in and out of the clothing. Following its launch, RoDF partnered with Tommy Hilfiger on the first mainstream adaptive clothing line for kids in 2016.   Founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need, RoDF develops, delivers and supports initiatives to broaden the reach of mainstream adaptive clothing and promote people with disabilities in the fashion industry. Through adaptive clothing donations, employment opportunity initiatives, adaptive design workshops, adaptive fashion shows, wardrobe grants, awareness building campaigns and scholarship programs, RoDF is empowering people with disabilities in style.  Mindy serves as a consultant for Tommy Adaptive, is a member of the Advisory Council for Zappos Adaptive and works to educate many other fashion brands on the population of people with disabilities. Envisioning a world where fashion is mainstream and accessible for all, Mindy continues to break down barriers and challenge industry norms. In 2019, Mindy created Gamut Talent Management to represent people with disabilities and create a marketplace where businesses and industries can connect to this target audience.  Gamut is rebranding the way PWDs are viewed, marketed to and represented in the mainstream world. The continued support of the mission of Runway of Dreams will always be a component of Gamut, as the company's 501c3 partner. Mindy has been featured in Newsweek's  “The Creative Class of 2019: Innovators,” People magazine's “Heroes Among Us,” and Pix 11's “Changemaker: Making the Fashion Industry More Inclusive.”  She has also been featured in USA Today, Parents, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue Business, WWD, NBC's Today, ABC's Good Morning America, Access, CNBC, Fox News Channel and more. An inspiring TED speaker, Mindy has received numerous awards including the Catalyst Award for “Marketing Influencer of the Year,” Citrin Cooperman's “Women at the Wheel Leadership Excellence Award, the Association of Image Consultants International Bravo Award and Enable Inc.'s Michael Graves Award for Creativity and Persistence.  Mindy studied Fashion Design with a dual program at the University of Vermont and Fashion Institute of Technology.

Erik, Jeff, and Dave connected with Mindy to talk about the leaps and bounds she's made in the field of accessible fashion for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. Although she had been in the fashion world for years she was unaware of the lack of consideration given to those with alternate needs until her son, Oliver, who was born with muscular dystrophy, wanted to fit in with his friends - fashion-wise. “In my entire career in fashion there was never a thought of the challenges people with disabilities faced.” Mindy talked about the emotional and personal struggles that came with having a child with a disability that wasn't immediately diagnosable and how ultimately her situation provided inspiration to help others. “I could help not just Oliver’s life but the millions of people out there who are experiencing the same thing. This gave me a sense of purpose in a situation where I felt helpless.” Our hosts dive into the Pioneering process Mindy went through from creating jeans in her living room to having an accessible line with Tommy Hilfiger and founding RoDF. As a leader in the fashion industry for 20+ years, in 2014 Mindy Scheier found herself on a journey discovering the huge need for adaptive clothing when her then 8 year son, Oliver, expressed the daily act of getting dressed and buttoning jeans was too hard and setting him apart from his peers. Oliver was diagnosed a few years prior with a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy, SEPN1 related myopathy. This episode covers the Scheier family’s diagnostic journey, Mindy's discovery into the world of adaptive clothing, and the formation of the Runway of Dreams Foundation. This mama bear on a mission shares how she set out to change and influence the fashion industry, inspire via TED talks, and impact brand names such as: Tommy Adaptive | Tommy Hilfiger USA, Target Adaptive, Zappos Adaptive, and Nike FlyEase. Mindy Scheier is the founder of the nonprofit, Runway of Dreams Foundation. Prior to launching the nonprofit, Mindy spent over 20 years working in fashion as a key member of the design team for the INC collection and stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. Mindy’s career path took a new direction when her son Oliver, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy causing physical disabilities, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends. That night, she used her background in design to adapt a pair that not only met his needs, but increased his confidence. She soon realized that millions of people around the globe were also struggling to access fashionable clothing. She used her experience in fashion to develop modifications — including magnetic closures, adjustability of waistbands, pant and sleeve lengths and alternative ways to get in and out of the clothing — to meet a wide variety of needs within the differently-abled community. After pounding the fashion pavement, Runway of Dreams collaborated with Tommy Hilfiger on the first ever-mainstream adaptive clothing line for kids in Spring 2016. Founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need, the Runway of Dreams Foundation develops, delivers and supports initiatives to broaden the reach of mainstream adaptive clothing and promote the differently-abled community in the fashion industry.
