Please consider donating to our #GivingTuesday campaign so that we can continue bringing you these important stories… Rabbi Adam Scheier says what happened to him in downtown Montreal on Sunday, Nov. 24—when a police officer saw the full-time kippah wearer silently watching and filming a nearby pro-Palestinian march, and ordered him to move along to avoid igniting any problems—shows “unacceptable and intolerable” conditions being demanded of his community. The spiritual leader of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, the oldest Ashkenazi synagogue in Canada, founded in 1846, has subsequently been speaking out about the way his city's leaders have handled the local explosion of antisemitism during the past 14 months. In his view, the experience revealed how rather than enforcing the law and protecting the rights of Jewish people, authorities are now asking them to hide for their own protection—while crowds of mask-wearing demonstrators chanting hateful slogans have been given free reign on the streets. Scheier was out with his wife and daughters shopping for a birthday gift when he purchased a coffee at the Second Cup. He wanted to show appreciation for the café chain quickly cutting ties with its franchisee at the Jewish General Hospital after she was spotted making antisemitic gestures while shouting antisemitic slogans. The modern Orthodox rabbi subsequently met with senior police commanders and local politicians, although police will not say what they intend to do in response. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Rabbi Scheier joins to describe his ordeal, in conversation with Joel Ceausu, the new Quebec correspondent for The Canadian Jewish News.

Happy Mother's Day, Sisters! We hope it will be a joyful one for you and your families. As we know well, our relationships with our moms can run the emotional gamut over the lifespan. We also know that some moms are made for mothering (or work really hard at it!), while some simply fall short because of circumstances they can't (or don't know how to) control. In Liz Scheier's beautiful, honest memoir, Never Simple, she describes her difficult and complex relationship with her mother, Judith. As a result of Judith's borderline personality disorder (BPD), Liz's childhood was fraught with chaos and volatility. When Liz was 18 years old, her mother dropped two bombshells. One, that her mom had been married for most of the previous two decades to a man Liz had never heard of. And second, that everything she had told Liz about the man she'd claimed was Liz's dead father was entirely fictional. Never Simple is Liz's story about what happened next. We loved our illuminating and intimate conversation with Liz -- and you will, too. Never Simple has garnered praise from the New York Times, Publishers Weekly (starred review), Kirkus, Library Journal, Bookpage, Booklist, and bestselling authors Augusten Burroughs, Jenny Lawson, Isaac Mizrahi, Elissa Altman, Greer Hendricks, and Mira Bartók. It was chosen as a Best Book of March by Amazon and Apple Books, a People Picks by People Magazine, an Indie Next pick, a Barnes & Noble Top 10 Favorite Ebook of 2022, and was featured as one of “15 March Reads to Get You Through the Month” on Good Morning America. It was a finalist for a Lambda Award.
In this week's episode I sat down with Oliver Scheier. Oliver, among many other things including fashion model and artist, is a human with a disability and he loves it. After sharing his story and talking about how the desire to wear jeans like everybody else led to the founding of the non-profit Runway of Dreams, we discuss what it means to him, as a disabled person, to walk the runways, how the impact of seeing disability in fashion has changed society's perception of disability (and how it's stayed the same), and that disability is cool. First time author Liz Scheier's book, Never Simple, is aptly named. Liz had always known that her mom suffered from depression and anxiety but she didn't know until her early twenties that borderline personality disorder was also part of her mother's mental framework. BPD, according to Mayo Clinic, “impacts the way you think and feel about yourself and others, causing problems functioning in everyday life. It includes self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and a pattern of unstable relationships.”In practice, that meant threatening to have Liz followed around New York City, tracking down what hotels she stayed in and calling them to check in on her, and protecting Liz from basic truths like who her father was and the fact that Liz never had a birth certificate. Later in life, with Liz married and with a family of her own, her mother's health deteriorates and her life unravels. And at that point, Liz, like many people dealing with a family member's mental illness, tries to help as best she can while being unsure how much help is even possible.Learn more about Borderline Personality Disorder here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/borderline-personality-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20370237Get your copy of Liz Scheier's memoir Never Simple wherever books are sold. Waiting for Places is a podcast highlighting stage managers in the flyover states. Episode 14 features Dr. Jennifer Leigh Sears Scheier. She is a freelance AEA stage manager and recently completed her PhD dissertation at the University of Illinois. Her dissertation, “The Quest for Professionalization: A 20th Century Cautionary Tale for United States Stage Managers,” focused on reclaiming stage management history while investigating the field's current challenges through a historical lens. Her past stage management credits include: Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Knoxville Opera, La Jolla Playhouse, Lamb's Players Theatre, Long Beach Opera, San Diego Repertory Theatre, and Tennessee Repertory Theatre. In the early 2000s, Liz Scheier’s mom was facing eviction, so Liz, like many young women, turned to egg donation to raise funds to escape financial crisis. Over the next several years, Liz underwent a total of three rounds of egg retrieval. In the years since, Liz has spent a significant amount of time analyzing the situation and asking important ethical questions related to it. She sits on the leadership team of We Are Egg Donors (WAED), a volunteer-run global support network for over 2,000 current and former egg donors across the world. WAED is regularly featured in media outlets including The New York Times, The Atlantic, NBC, WIRED, and others. As media liaison for WAED, Liz speaks frequently with journalists about the experiences of egg donors, the ethical issues involved in anonymous gamete donation, and the urgent need for a long-term longitudinal study of the effects of egg donation on women's health. She is an author, editor, and product developer living in Washington, DC with her husband and two children, and we are honored to have her joining us on Venus Rising today.

Our guest today is Mindy Scheier, a fashion designer and mother of a child with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. She is a TED speaker and the President and Founder of Runway of Dreams, a nonprofit organization which works with top clothing brands to develop clothing designs that are made specifically for people with disabilities that make dressing themselves a difficult task. Scheier talks about her journey and also shares her Top 3 tips for launching an organization.
As a leader in the fashion industry for 20+ years, in 2014 Mindy Scheier found herself on a journey discovering the huge need for adaptive clothing when her then 8 year son, Oliver, expressed the daily act of getting dressed and buttoning jeans was too hard and setting him apart from his peers. Oliver was diagnosed a few years prior with a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy, SEPN1 related myopathy. This episode covers the Scheier family’s diagnostic journey, Mindy's discovery into the world of adaptive clothing, and the formation of the Runway of Dreams Foundation. This mama bear on a mission shares how she set out to change and influence the fashion industry, inspire via TED talks, and impact brand names such as: Tommy Adaptive | Tommy Hilfiger USA, Target Adaptive, Zappos Adaptive, and Nike FlyEase. Runway of Dreams aims to be the authority on incorporating modifications to mainstream clothing for the differently-abled community, changing the landscape of fashion as being ALL-INCLUSIVE. http://enequilibriomental.net/ Quinto programa EN EQUILIBRIO MENTAL EL ARTÏCULO DEL BLOG A todos nos han dicho alguna vez que para evitar estados tristes y depresivos es importante dormir bien, salir al exterior cuando haya luz, no aislarse y hacer ejercicio a diario. Pongámonos a ello.
I Lviv fanns vackra damer i päls. Under Hitlers ockupation deporterades stans stora judiska befolkning. Uppläsningar ur: Vasilij Grossman: Reporter i krig (övers. Hans Magnusson), Leopold von Sacher-Masoch: Venus i päls, Bruno Schulz: Kanelbutikerna, kapitlet Fåglarna (övers. Johan Malm), Sanatoriet Timglaset, kapitlet Fars sista flykt (övers. Johan Malm) och Adam Zagajewski: Resa till Lwów (övers. Anders Bodegård).
