This week's podcast features Ann Sperling, a legendary wine maker from BC who has been in Ontario now for many years. She has a long family history in BC and is the great-granddaughter of Giovanni Casorso, who is (if we need one) the real father of BC's wine industry.  She spent her first years as a winemaker at André's Wines in Port Moody in the 1980s before taking on winemaking at the early years of CedarCreek where her wines (specifically a Merlot) was considered so good at a fall Wine Festival awards that they created a platinum award just for the Merlot that year. She's consulted with Clos du Soleil in the Similkameen Valley and most recently headed Sperling Vineyards on her family's property in Kelowna's Mission Creek area. She consults with many wineries in Ontario and around the world. Together with her husband, Peter Gamble, collectively, they know more about wine than I can ever hope to know. Talking with Ann was really special because she was the first person that I interviewed in the winter of 2015 as I began the research for what became my first book, Valleys of Wine. Chatting with her at her historic home east of St. Catharine's was a great honour and was a great way to end my podcast recordings on that trip. Please note – This is an information-rich conversation, with a lot of industry-talk on some complex themes. Ann is one of the most knowledgeable people in the country about wine and I was not going to let the opportunity pass without digging deep. If you hear anything that doesn't make sense to you or if you want to know more about something, please email me at sipsterswinepodcast@gmail.com with your question and I will do my best to reply. Ann was also recovering from a bad cold when we spoke so there is a slight rasp to her voice that is not there normally.  Support the showContact me at sipsterswinepodcast@gmail.com!Purchase copies of "The Sipsters Pocket Guides" here!Support the Sipsters Podcast by subscribing!Read Sipster's ICONS (Because sometimes more IS more.)Find us online at Sipsterswinepodcast.ca. Sarah Davis grew up unlike most of us. After her parents split up when she was young, her dad eventually decided to live in a houseboat down on Mission Creek. He brought Sarah and her brother with him part-time. In this podcast, Sarah describes growing up on that houseboat (she still lives in a houseboat, albeit a different one, on the creek today). She talks about some of the colorful characters who were her neighbors, and ends this episode on her parents, whose lives involved the art and music scenes of San Francisco in the '70s, '80s, and on. Join us again Thursday, when Sarah will talk about building the houseboat she currently lives in and shares details on the city's houseboat community today. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, August 25. Tuesday's humid weather turned into heavy rain and sometimes dangerous conditions. Wednesday could provide a repeat of this pattern. According to the National Weather Service it will be partly sunny with a high near 90 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Wednesday. There will be a 30 percent chance of rain, primarily after 4 p.m., with some storms having the potential for heavy rain. Then Wednesday night the chance for rain will continue at roughly the same probability, although more likely it will be rain again.  Severe thunderstorms swept across Central and Eastern Iowa on Tuesday, bringing hail and high winds that damaged buildings and snapped trees. According to National Weather Service https://www.weather.gov/source/crh/lsrmap.html?sid=dvn (storm reports, )the bad weather in the state spanned from as far west as Story City north of Des Moines to as far east as Bellevue on the Iowa-Illinois border. Early storm reports showed widespread winds, ranging from 40 to 70 mph, as well as hail raging in size from a quarter inch to 1 inch in diameter. The most damaging storms appear to have hit northeastern Iowa, at, and to the north of, Manchester. Parents expressed worries for the safety of their children and others Tuesday as students in Iowa City schools finished their second day of classes without a face mask requirement. During a school board meeting, the board was presented with a petition signed by over 1,000 community members, medical providers and parents asking the Iowa City Community School District to require masks in schools to help protect against the spread of COVID-19. The petitioners did so while conceding that the board's hands are likely tied by a state law passed in May prohibiting masking mandates. Iowa City School Superintendent Matt Degner said the district is aware of the concerns and is working on solutions to keep students safe. Leadership is changing at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City. Andre Perry, executive director for 11 years, has resigned to pursue new projects. His final day is Sept. 13, but he will help finalize fall and spring programming already underway, and will continue as executive director for the upcoming Witching Hour festival and Mission Creek festival in 2022. Perry has led the nonprofit arts presenter through growing from an $800,000 budget in 2010 to a $1.9 million budget in 2019. He also founded Mission Creek and Witching Hour festivals, showcasing high-profile and emerging artists, as well as local musicians, authors, poets and creators. Hi all! I'm back with some Yay! Naming this season in the moment, playing in the Yay, admitting likely to go back to other things like Changing Course. Especially since they're already recorded. I'm calling this "The way of Yay" because it came to me a few days ago and it may just become the first book, hence, Chapter 1. This short-ish episode is about taking in the Yay, taking in the good, and lots of other ways to characterize that (and a lived example of the opposite). It started because I wanted to animate the aftermath of a great conversation with Krista and get a baguette from tartine. Which will lead to future baked heaven from panorama baking company More learning and living about Taking in the good via Rick Hanson's Hardwiring Happiness and my friend Jess Having a Great Food truck Race moment with Nola Creations that turned out to be real. They won the Great Food Truck Race. Who knew? Me, apparently. https://nola-creations.com/ They're at Soma Streat food park today 9/22/2020. Happy fall y'all! Understanding more about the Mission neighborhood and how the name itself is fraught with conquering, colonialism, and white supremacy. Acknowledging the Native Americans and the indigenous land we are settlers of is one way to aware and repair, out loud. (this is a wikipedia excerpt) "Prior to the arrival of Spanish missionaries, the area which now includes the Mission District was inhabited by the Ohlone people who populated much of the San Francisco bay area. The Yelamu Indians inhabited the region for over 2,000 years. Spanish missionaries arrived in the area during the late 18th century. They found these people living in two villages on Mission Creek. It was here that a Spanish priest named Father Francisco Palóu founded Mission San Francisco de Asis on June 29, 1776. The Mission was moved from the shore of Laguna Dolores to its current location in 1783.[10] Franciscan friars are reported to have used Ohlone slave labor to complete the Mission in 1791.[11] This period marked the beginning of the end of the Yelamu culture. The Indian population at Mission Dolores dropped from 400 to 50 between 1833 and 1841." I recommend "Starting out the day with a big cup of Yay" whatever time it is. NamasYay y'all!

Before there was the ballpark where the Giants play ... before the elevated I-280 freeway ... before most of the northeastern half of what we call the Mission District ... before the Gold Rush, there was Mission Bay. It was fed by many sources, the biggest of which was Mission Creek, which flowed over waterfalls down from Twin Peaks, by Mission Dolores, and down into the bay. Today, all that's left of that creek is what some call McCovey Cove. But to the residents of a couple dozen houseboats, it's Mission Creek. In this podcast, houseboat residents Ginny Stearns and Bob Isaacson talk about founding many of the preservation groups that have worked with the government and developers to protect their little corner of the city. Bob and Ginny talk about moving to San Francisco, the various work they did before moving into their houseboat, and how the area around Mission Creek has changed dramatically.
