Whom we also interview on episode #86 if you want to hear more of the story and vision on the film. The film gives background to the current crisis in Israel/Palestine and brings to light the lives of people we met on our 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. Their universally human stories speak of intergenerational pain, trauma and resilience. We hope they touch your heart, stir compassion and understanding, and give rise to a pursuit for justice. For without justice, peace remains an empty slogan. Cinema can be a powerful force for change. Our aim is, beyond mere education, to truly move hearts and minds and inspire audiences to echo the calls for freedom, equality and dignity that have gone unanswered for far too long. The film is our modest contribution towards our dream for an end to the occupation in Palestine, the attainment of equal rights and fair treatment for Palestinian people, and the spreading of healing for all intergenerational cycles of trauma in the region. https://whereolivetreesweep.com/

Their discussion covers treating animals with honor, the importance of Creator, and the characterization of "savages," as an imperial framing used to justify the extraction of their homelands' resources. Their conversation also reviews the ways in which European forces have appropriated their culture's global contributions-- America's democracy for instance was deeply influenced by the Haudenosaunee Indigenous Confederacy; European sciences were heavily influenced by pre-inquisition Islamic universities; and Arabian horses were co-opted and retitled as European horses. PBS invites viewers to buckle up for a cross-country journey along historic Route 66 in THE GREAT MUSLIM AMERICAN ROAD TRIP. The new three-part documentary series follows a young Muslim American couple — rapper-activist Mona Haydar and her husband Sebastian Robins — as they explore America's “Mother Road” and its surrounding Muslim communities on a 2,500-mile drive from Chicago to Los Angeles. Although they are practicing Muslims — Mona is Syrian American and Sebastian converted after meeting Mona — the couple, like most Americans, are unfamiliar with Islam's deeps roots in America. This road trip is an opportunity for them not only to experience the breathtaking panoramas and iconic roadside attractions that have made Route 66 famous, but also to learn more about the history of their faith and what it means to be Muslim in America today. Making more than a dozen stops, Mona and Sebastian meet authors, entrepreneurs, students and others, including Muhammad Ali's daughter Maryam Ali in Chicago; Bosnian immigrants and restaurant owners Sulejman and Emmina Grbic in St. Louis; jazz musician Leon Rollerson in Tulsa; and award-winning actor and writer Amir Abdullah in Pasadena. Their conversations uncover the deep roots and impact of Islam and Muslims in American history and culture. By the time they reach the West Coast, the couple have a better understanding of themselves, their relationship and the centuries-long Muslim experience in America.

We got a lot of flack last year for "getting too political" because white supremacy, fascism, and corruption aren't in our lane. Our argument has always been that as Muslim American moms, politics MATTERS to us because it directly affects our families and kids. From misguided counter violence and extremism to unbridled capitalism to straight up racism, Muslim Americans have suffered for decades in this nation, so we ARE in our lane. Mona Haydar @mostmona joins us on this episode to round out our January How To's and discusses the hard work of using art for social justice and reform. She went viral in a very pregnant body and called out the otherism that hijabi women encounter every day, and since then, has gone on to produce epic protest rap that makes us yell "Atta girl!" and "Alhamdulillah." Truth makes waves because it hurts. But truth is NEVER controversial. Mona is proof of that, and of our Divine duties to make change with the skills we have. Be different. Be courageous.
