Whom we also interview on episode #86 if you want to hear more of the story and vision on the film. The film gives background to the current crisis in Israel/Palestine and brings to light the lives of people we met on our 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. Their universally human stories speak of intergenerational pain, trauma and resilience. We hope they touch your heart, stir compassion and understanding, and give rise to a pursuit for justice. For without justice, peace remains an empty slogan. Cinema can be a powerful force for change. Our aim is, beyond mere education, to truly move hearts and minds and inspire audiences to echo the calls for freedom, equality and dignity that have gone unanswered for far too long. The film is our modest contribution towards our dream for an end to the occupation in Palestine, the attainment of equal rights and fair treatment for Palestinian people, and the spreading of healing for all intergenerational cycles of trauma in the region. https://whereolivetreesweep.com/

Our guest this week, Jayne Moore Waldrop traded legal briefs of a law practice for her writing journals in an MFA program. Her first book, Drowned Town, is a novel in linked stories about the families who lost their homes in the 1960s when President Kennedy announced the creation of Land Between the Lakes, a national recreation area that resulted from damning several rivers and taking land from residents through eminent domain. Jayne explores what the meaning of home becomes when one's home is now underwater. Her book was selected as one of the best southern books of 2021 by the Southern Review of Books. Jayne has changed gears once again, this time to tell a picture book story for children titled A Journey in Color: The Art of Ellis Wilson about one of the great artists of the Harlem Renaissance, native Kentuckian Ellis Wilson, who won two Guggenheim Fellowships but has been virtually unknown in his home state. Jayne teamed up with acclaimed Nashville artist Michael McBride to create a book that helps give Wilson his due but also inspire children to follow their dreams. Justin speaks to independent Councillor Michael McBride, who is from the area and was at the scene on Friday.
Tragedy struck for two families when Ann Grosmaire was shot by her fiancé, Conor McBride. In the wake of her death, Ann's parents were moved to forgiveness through their Catholic faith. All harm — and especially a death like this — impacts more than just the victim alone. The Grosmaires, McBrides, and their whole community lost two cherished young adults the day Ann was shot. Justice would not be found without including each of these involved parties in a healing process. In this episode, Kate and Deacon Andy Grosmaire, Julie and Michael McBride, and their facilitator sujatha baliga share the story of their restorative justice circle that shaped Conor's sentencing. Their testimony is witness to the possibilities of a justice centered in restoring relationships and creating opportunities for healing. Kate tells this full story in her book, https://www.christianbook.com/forgiving-daughters-killer-faith-unexpected-grace/kate-grosmaire/9780718091477/pd/091477 (Forgiving My Daughter's Killer: A True Story of Loss, Faith, and Unexpected Grace.)

Cineál nua heipitítis tolgtha ag 16 leanbh sa Tuaisceart. Health authorities in the North have confirmed that sixteen children have contracted a new form of hepatitis, the causes of which are still unknown. Tá sé deimhnithe ag na húdaráis sláinte sa Tuaisceart go bhfuil cineál nua heipitítis nach fios fós cad is siocair leis tolgtha ag sé pháiste dhéag ansin. Dr Michael McBride, Chief Medical Officer for the North, said that "some of the children had to undergo specialist medical treatment in other parts of the UK and one had to undergo a liver transplant." Thug Príomhoifigeach Leighis an Tuaiscirt an Dr Michael McBride le fios go mb'éigean "sainchóireáil leighis a chur i gcodanna eile den Ríocht Aontaithe ar roinnt de na páistí agus go mb'éigean aistriú ae a dhéanamh ar dhuine acu." Health authorities in the north are urging parents to be alert to the symptoms of the disease - such as jaundice and conjunctivitis - and to seek emergency medical treatment, if necessary. Tá na húdaráis sláinte ó thuaidh ag achainí ar thuismitheoirí a bheith san airdeall ar chomharthaí sóirt an ghalair - buíochan agus bánú súl, cuir i gcás - agus cóir leighis éigeandála a iarraidh, más gá. People are also advised to be careful about hygiene in general, washing their hands regularly and so on. Táthar ag moladh do dhaoine freisin a bheith cúramach faoi chúrsaí sláinteachais trí chéile, a lámha a ní go rialta agus mar sin de. It is reported that children in more than twenty countries around the world have contracted the new form of hepatitis and that most of them are children under the age of five. Tuairiscítear go bhfuil an cineál nua heipitítis tolgtha ag leanaí i mbreis agus fiche tír ar fud an domhain agus gur leanaí faoi chúig bliana d'aois a bhformhór. The Health Protection Surveillance Center has already reported that eight children in the Republic have contracted the disease. Tá sé tugtha le fios cheana ag an Lárionad Faire um Chosaint Sláinte go bhfuil an galar tolgtha ag ochtar páistí sa Phoblacht. These, it was said, were children under the age of twelve, all of whom had to be hospitalized. Leanaí faoi dhá bhliain déag iad seo, a dúradh, agus b'éigean iad ar fad a chur in ospidéil. One of them died and another was given a new liver. Bhásaigh duine acu agus tugadh ae nua do dhuine eile. Dr Gillian Armstrong from the Northern Public Health Agency said the disease was still being eradicated. Dúirt an Dr Gillian Armstrong ón nGníomhaireacht um Shláinte Phoiblí sa Tuaisceart go bhfuiltear fós ag iarraidh an galar a chur le bonn. It is being questioned, she said, whether it could have anything to do with childhood adrenavirus or young people's environment, such as toxins in the air. Táthar ag fiosrú, a dúirt sí, an bhféadfadh aon bhaint a bheith aige le hadanaivíreas a bhíonn ar leanaí go minic nó le le timpeallacht na ndaoine óga, leithéidí tocsainí san aer. She confirmed that none of the children struck ill in the North had Covid-19 and that none had received the vaccine. Dhearbhaigh sí nach raibh covid 19 ar aon duine de na leanaí a buaileadh tinn sa Tuaisceart agus nach raibh an vacsaín faighte ag aon duine acu.

In their lectures delivered at the 2015 Fuller Forum, Walter Brueggemann, renowned author and Old Testament scholar, presented the law of Yahweh not as static and totalizing but as an ongoing conversation between God and God’s people; Cameron Lee, professor of marriage and family studies, explained how neighborliness has developmental roots in early family relationships, and how this has implications for the ministry and life of the church; and Michael McBride, pastor of The Way Christian Center, talked about the role the church has to advocate for and participate in movements of racial justice, particularly by redeeming broken systems. The 2015 Fuller Forum explored the themes of justice, grace, and law and how each shapes our understanding of the church’s relationship with God and the church’s ministry in the world. Joined by Fuller scholars and other guests, renowned Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann, featured as the conference’s keynote speaker. Author of over a hundred books, he is the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary.
Show Notes:Two years ago, long before we launched The Weight, Chris and Eddie sat down with Pastor Michael McBride of LIVE FREE, a faith based movement dedicated to stopping gun violence and ending mass incarceration. In addition to this role, Pastor McBride has served on a number of local and national task forces with the White House and Department of Justice regarding gun violence prevention, boys and men of color and police-community relationships, most recently as an Advisor on President Barack Obama's Faith Based Advisory Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.Though recorded in 2018, this conversation is just as relevant as ever, engaging topics of racial justice, gun violence, and the Church's need to consider and overcome the blockades that stop it from proactively addressing these issues. Recorded soon after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that took the lives of 17 students, McBride reflects on his experience as a pastor in communities that have faced significant levels of gun violence and how it informs his advocacy, pastoral care, and perspective on what “faith in action” must look like in the face of societal injustice. He also reflects on the racial injustices he has personally faced as a black man and has seen systemically embedded in society in a way that often goes overlooked or ignored. Pastor McBride challenges the American church to do the “soul-searching” necessary to recognize the places in which we need to further let our values, both individually and collectively, be transformed by the message and power of Jesus Christ.
