Prof Grainne McAlonan, Professor of Translational Neuroscience in the Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences at King's College London. Synopsis: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is clinically diverse, and its etiological mechanisms are poorly understood. To inform prognosis and generate intervention opportunities we need a better understanding of causal pathways; and subsequently, a means to examine target engagement. There is fresh hope however, based on evidence that multiple risk factors for ASD and related neurodevelopmental conditions converge to disrupt the balance between excitatory glutamate (E) and inhibitory GABA (I). This will likely alter the activity and structure of brain circuits which underpin (especially social) cognition and behaviour. Professor McAlonon’s research is directly testing this hypothesis by using MRI to examine spontaneous functional activity and microstructure in the brain of neonates with and without vulnerabilities for neurodevelopmental disorders. Her research has also begun to investigate whether E/I differences persist into adulthood in ASD, and if they are ‘responsive’ to pharmacological modulation. In her keynote talk, Professor McAlonan will share some of her early progress in these areas. Biography: Professor Grainne McAlonan studied Medicine at University of Cambridge and Imperial College London and completed a PhD in Behavioural Neuroscience at University of Cambridge.  After clinical and research posts in the UK, she worked for over a decade in The University of Hong Kong before returning to the IoPPN. She uses MRI as a translational tool to link brain and behaviour in people with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); and to ‘back’ (and ‘forward’) translate to laboratory models. Her current research is informed by her work in the National ADHD and Autism Service for Adults at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and she is Clinical Disorders Cluster Lead for the NIHR-Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. Professor McAlonan is a group leader within the MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders at IoPPN and is a lead investigator within the EU-AIMS-2-TRIALS consortium – a European network hosting the world’s largest grant for autism research. She is responsible for fetal/neonatal/infant brain imaging studies of children vulnerable to neurodevelopmental conditions and for pharmacology studies in adults with ASD.

He served as principle investigator on grants from the European Science Foundation, Marie Curie Actions, the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation; and has been co-PI on awards from the Australian Research Council, Marie Curie, Humboldt Foundation, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK).   Hannah Berry has recently completed her doctoral thesis on empathy from the University of Liverpool. The thesis is called ‘The Shoe Never Fits: a phenomenological revision of empathy and intersubjectivity’ and offers a critical analysis of phenomenological, psychological and biological descriptions of empathy and proposes a development to Husserl’s theory of analogising apprehension in order to describe an interpersonal experience that takes into account sociability as well as the subjective experience of self and other. Her interests are in psycho- and socio-linguistics, forensic linguistics, pragmatics, phenomenology and philosophy of mind. Hannah is the current secretary for the British Society for Phenomenology and is the lead tutor of the WEA’s North West refugee education programme.   Jessie Stanier is a PhD student at the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health at the University of Exeter. She takes an engaged approach to her study of phenomenology, ageing, and older age by collaborating with various people affected by the lived realities of ageing and caring. In her PhD thesis, she aims to shed new light on normative determinants of ageing and how they affect lived experiences and possibilities for older people. She co-hosted this year’s BSP conference online, and she is currently co-editing a Special Issue of Puncta: Journal of Critical Phenomenology on ‘Pandemic Politics & Phenomenology’.   The British Society for Phenomenology is a not-for-profit organisation set up with the intention of promoting research and awareness in the field of Phenomenology and other cognate arms of philosophical thought. Dr. Holmans is head of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit at the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University, and has over 25 years' experience in the statistical analysis of complex genetic traits, both in data analysis and developing novel genetic methodology. He has led the statistical analysis of large multicentre collaborations in genome-wide linkage of schizophrenia, and association in Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Of particular relevance to HD and other repeat disorders, he led the pathway analysis of the two GeM genetic modifiers GWAS (2015, 2019) and also the genetic analysis of HD progression (Hensman-Moss et al. 2017b), implicating DNA repair pathways as modifiers both of age at onset and progression in HD. He has also led the pathway analyses of HD RNA-seq expression data in myeloid cells (Miller et al. 2016) and whole blood (Hensman-Moss et al. 2017a), implicating immune pathways as relevant to HD pathogenesis and uncovering shared susceptibility pathways with other neurodegenerative disorders. Currently, he is interested in discovering genetic modifiers associated with other phenotypes (particularly psychiatric) in HD. We’re delighted to be joined by Dr Sophie Legge and Dr Antonio Pardiñas for our latest minisode to discuss their latest research study.Sophie, Antonio and colleagues at Cardiff University’s MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics examined genetic data from more than 500 people of African descent taking clozapine, an anti-psychotic medication prescribed to people with treatment resistant schizophrenia.Clozapine is currently the most effective treatment for people with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, but it can cause a rare side effect called neutropenia. In the most extreme cases, this can develop into agranulocytosis; a severe and potentially life-threatening condition.These side-effects are characterised by lower neutrophil levels, a type of white blood cell, and these lower levels appear to be more common in people of African descent. In this #DataTalk, we’re talked with Saurabh Johri about using AI to make healthcare universally accessible and affordable. Prior to Babylon, Saurabh spent five years as a post-doctoral research fellow at the MRC Centre for Outbreak Analysis and Modelling at Imperial College London. Working with the CDC and Gates Foundation, he helped develop new methods and mathematical models for estimating the transmission of poliovirus from genetic sequence data. Prior to this, he completed a PhD in population and statistical genetics at Imperial College London.

Filmed at the CPM's event 'Personalised Medicine in Practice: Advances in Reproductive Science' on 7th March 2017, Erin Greaves gives her talk 'Animal Models in Reproductive Health'. Erin Greaves obtained her PhD in 2009 in Developmental Biology from Leeds University. Erin carried out her postdoctoral training in (what was then) the MRC Human Reproductive Sciences Unit with Professor Philippa Saunders at Edinburgh University during which she developed an innovative mouse model of endometriosis. In 2014 she was awarded a prestigious MRC Career Development Award and in 2015 was appointed as a Principal Investigator at the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health, Edinburgh. Along with Philippa Saunders and Andrew Horne, Erin leads the research at EXPPECT Edinburgh, a Centre focusing on excellence in pelvic pain and endometriosis care and treatment. Erin’s research focuses on the pathophysiological processes that lead to endometriosis-associated pain, with a particular focus on the role of macrophages.
