Standard Bank's newly launched Africa Trade Barometer places South Africa at the top of the list of ten countries, followed by Ghana and Mozambique in second and third places. Kenya is placed fourth, Tanzania fifth, Uganda sixth, Namibia seventh, Nigeria eight, Zambia ninth, with Angola taking up the tenth position. Standard Bank, currently active in 20 African markets, aims for the barometer to become the continent's leading trade index. The Africa Trade Barometer will initially focus only on ten countries. The barometer, which Standard Bank aims to publish twice a year, encompasses comparative data on trade openness, access to finance, macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, foreign trade, governance, economy and trade finance behaviour. Qualitative and quantitative intelligence gathered from 2 400 firms representing small and medium enterprises, large family businesses, corporates and multinationals across all ten economies is analysed and then augmented with third-party sources, including the World Bank, International Trade Center, and individual countries' central banks. The report “presents one of the most comprehensive views of actual trade as experienced on the ground by real African businesses”, says Standard Bank Trade and Africa-China head Philip Myburgh. Trends and analysis gleaned should also provide insight into the broader regions that the ten study markets represent. Myburgh believes the barometer will prove to be a valuable resource for business people, students, governments, nongovernmental organisations and investors, with Africa's trade opportunity currently estimated at roughly $70-billion a year. “We expect the Africa Trade Barometer to become the leading index of African trade trends, activities and developments as Africa's small, medium and large businesses define the continent's next stage of domestic growth and regional and global expansion.”
The June 1 launch of the JSE's new Cutting Red Tape initiative to make listing on the JSE considerably easier, faster and more sustainable is twinning with the JSE's other private placements inventiveness that provides for the raising of capital in the private market for minerals exploration and the startup of new mines. JSE head of origination and deals Sam Mokorosi highlighted these two far-reaching advances at the exploration-focused 2022 Junior Indaba, which heard that the Toronto Stock Exchange has 1 600 small-cap mining companies and the Sydney Stock Exchange 600 compared the JSE's miniscule 12. “From a JSE perspective, there is a long history with the mining industry, which was, in fact, the reason for our existence as a stock exchange over 135 years ago,” said Mokorosi. Mokorosi told the hybrid conference covered online by Mining Weekly that these major steps had been taken by the historic exchange on account of the declining number of listings in specifically the small-cap space that is occupied by junior explorers and junior miners. “What we've seen is that people are raising capital for exploration for starting up new mines in the private market so we've now launched JSE Private Placements, which allows for people to raise capital, and we've already seen, in the last couple of months since we've launched, that there's a lot of appetite in the mining space to raise capital privately. Then, in the JSE's core listed space, the JSE has recognised that it can make staying listed easier in addition to making listing easier and faster as well as advancing its wholly owned JSE Private Placements (JPP) venture, which has obtained its financial services provider (FSP) licence, unlocking an opportunity for the JSE to enter the private equity and debt market in South Africa and across the continent. By the end of March, the platform had R5-billion ready for deployment and one project already under way. To do this it has come up with Cutting Red Tape, launched on the opening day of the two-day Junior Indaba, involving the putting in place of a new JSE board that is not quite as stringent as its main board, but still gives investor protection. It is lighter in terms of processes and regular paperwork than what is demanded of main board listings. “So, we've put that out into the market to say let us know if these are the right things that will make a difference, so we are looking to make life easier for listed companies and help unlisted companies to raise capital through the JSE. Panel moderator Kolobe Nala Investment Company CEO Billy Mawasha requested ENSafrica executive tax head Andries Myburgh to outline the workings of the export-promoting flow-through tax incentive amid the JSE taking steps to be easier to operate within. The flow-through scheme is the basis of Canada's exploration success and Mawasha asked Myburgh to elaborate on why it has been so long in coming in South Africa although efforts had been made with National Treasury for several years. “If all of the departments pull together, now is the time to do it,” said Myburgh. NEW ERA As reported earlier by Engineering News & Mining Weekly, the JSE is entering a new era as it leverages JPP to build a future-fit capital market delivering a seamless digital marketplace that matches private debt and equity issuers with investors. The strategic decision to broaden its revenue stream by entering the private equity and debt market is in response to a shift in capital formation that has been emerging over the past decade. JSE capital markets director Valdene Reddy has been reported as saying that there has been a global trend away from public markets to private markets, which show phenomenal growth in capital formation and allocation. “By launching JPP, the JSE is providing an alternative to raise capital, through either private equity or private debt, which stands alongside our public market space,” she says, noting that the firm is strongly focused on national agenda ob...

"Food waste, in essence, is a resource, it's something that holds mass and nutritional value, it's meant for human consumption that then goes to waste.” Petro Myburgh, is Senior Operations Manager at the V&A Waterfront, one of Africa's largest commercial precincts and Africa's most visited destination. She oversees the cleaning, waste management and landscaping of the precinct; and also sits on the V&A Waterfront's sustainability committee. She believes biodiversity and natural resources need to be conserved for future generations, and the way commercial precincts deal with food waste is an important part of that. The V&A Waterfront has implemented policies and procedures for separating waste, including distributing composting bins to tenants, which has prevented tons of waste from going to landfills. She adds that Commercial precincts are ideally positioned to lead by example in the fight against food waste since landlords have the partnerships and information needed to influence their tenants and the communities in which they operate. And while it can be overwhelming to get started, with the right partnerships and a little help from friends, she believes you can make a significant impact. Guest: Pieter-Louis Myburgh | Author of ‘Gangster State' and Investigative Journalist at Daily Maverick For months, the Daily Maverick's Scorpio lead by investigative journalist, Pieter-Louis Myburgh, has been investigating digital marketing company Digital Vibe's allegedly corrupt contract with the Department of Health. It was awarded a R150 million deal by the department to provide communications services with regards to the National Health Insurance and Covid-19. The company is owned by a close associate of the Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, who is on special leave pending investigations, notably into the awarding of the contract. Writing in the Daily Maverick today, Myburgh says Scorpio has found that R1 million was siphoned off from the deal to help establish a new hair salon and an upmarket nail franchise owned by the minister's son and daughter-in-law.
