This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Happy Mother's Day Monday, ALBC babies. To celebrate the occasion, we unlocked a Patreon episode starring none other than Sarah's mom. We talk a lot about culty villains on this podcast, but we always want to highlight the heroes, too…and Ellen Shapiro is an embodiment of what it looks like to heroically love someone through—and out of—a cult journey. She joins us in this very special installment of the show to talk about what it was like to witness Sarah's initial NXIVM days, and what happened when the going got whistleblowing levels of rough. She's also a seeker and a licensed therapist who isn't afraid to let her professional opinions fly: Like what she always thought was slimy about Keith Raniere's shtick, and why she still has nothing but empathy for Nancy Salzman. There will be tears and laughs in this one. Enjoy: And don't forget to call your Mama. Welcome to Cryptic Soup, join Thena and Kylee for the story of Keith Raniere, Toni Natalie, Nancy Salzman, ESP (Executive Success Programs), the basis of MLM structures, and how NXIVM started. NXIVM was a recent cult that was branded as an MLM Pyramid scheme that had celebrities, sex scandals, and more. This is a multiple-part series to break down the cult, the leaders, and how it all worked.
In this episode of The Skeptical Shaman podcast, host Rachel White sits down to chat with real deal, actual hero and cult whistleblower Susan Dones, MA LMT.Susan was featured in the HBO's The Vow, a docuseries detailing the rise and fall of NXIVM: an American-based "personal development" program that was, actually, a highly abusive cult. NXIVM's leader, Keith Raniere, is currently serving a 120-year sentence for his crimes, and survivors and whistleblowers like Susan are spreading the word to help mitigate future fallout from similar "high control groups", as well as help survivors heal.Susan is a fascinating individual who's bonafides totally upend the flattened-- and horribly misinformed-- stereotype of a "cult member". Before entering NXIVM and becoming a coach, Susan was a decorated aircraft mechanic in the U.S. military, a licensed massage therapist, and a therapist-therapist with a Masters degree in psychology who had been working to help clients heal through the mind + body connection. In other words: she wasn't a slouch before entering NXIVM, but that didn't protect her from dealing with a multi-decade back-and-forth with a multi-million dollar juggernaut that launched more than 200 fake legal claims her. Susan was capable and intelligent enough to beat NXIVM's powerful lawyers across all of this "vexatious litigation", and yes: she represented herself. I know, right? Super. F*cking. Impressive. Now, Susan is focused on helping others heal after being in coercive control, high-demand groups or just abusive and traumatic dynamics more generally. She joined The Skeptical Shaman podcast to talk red flags when exploring personal and spiritual development, as well as why she likes to stay away from big groups and stick to a small, decentralized "pod" of good friends. Stick to the small pod, my friends. Decentralization is the key.Her lessons learned translate across the woo world, giving all of us line of sight into how to navigate an often nebulous, tricky landscape riddled with spiritual narcissists, abusers and con artists. And, because Susan is super f*cking cool, she indulged our very demanding and temperamental sponsor-- The TOTEM Tarot Deck-- as we pulled a tarot card to summarize our discussion and provide a bit of spiritual insight to the listeners.Susan Dones Website: https://susandones.comSustan Dones IG: @susandones456The Vow Docuseries Website: https://www.hbo.com/the-vow/season-1Rachel White Website (TOTEM Readings): https://www.totemreadings.comRachel White Instagram: @totemrachThe TOTEM Tarot Deck: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578980126?ref=myi_title_dp
I cannot understand how people get caught up in cults. I try and make sense of it as I dissect the Hulu doc "Stolen Youth" and the NXIVM Cult.
This week I am joined by Susan Dones, a former member of NXIVM and one of the first people to whistleblow to the authorities about the shady practices of Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman. We go deep into her story and what Keith and Nancy were like and how the coercion in that group worked. The post Sensibly Speaking Podcast #377: The NXIVM Experience with Susan Dones appeared first on The Sensibly Speaking Podcast.
Focused on scandalous stories in American culture, Infamous is a new podcast from Run, Bambi, Run host Vanessa Grigoriadis. Infamous covers the rise and fall of Girls Gone Wild; the lies that led to the Iraq war; and the last days of NXIVM, during which Grigoriadis had exclusive access to high-level cult members including Keith Raniere, who was then on the run in Mexico. Check out Infamous for never-before heard audio interviews with Seagram's heir Clare Bronfman, NXIVM number two Nancy Salzman, and Smallville star Allison Mack.https://link.chtbl.com/NPci7bQe
Sarah Edmondson (HBO's The Vow, A Little But Culty, Scarred) joins the show to talk about her experience escaping the NXIVM cult, her feelings speaking at the screening of the season two finale, realizing she'd been misled about what her brand (yes, she was branded) represented, her reactions to Keith Raniere, her thoughts on the loyalists (her husband and ALBC cohost Anthony "Nippy" Ames makes a brief appearance too), whether she thinks Nancy Salzman was sincere, recruiting/enrolling people, deprogramming, moving to Atlanta, the one thing most people susceptible to cults have in common, Pam Cafritz's funeral, suspicions that Keith was poisoning women, Allison Mack, writing her memoir and more. We also did a round of JMOE, HGFY and answered your questions. Plus Sarah read the vows Keith wrote for her wedding. And we're giving away a copy of her book! In Part 2 Sarah Edmondson's story, we see how the truth slowly starts to unfold. Sarah realizes that Keith Raniere, Nancy Salzman, and NXIVM were abusing many of its female members. For the first time, Sarah sees the horrible truth about the organization, and how Keith was actually sexually abusing women behind closed doors. When Sarah was tricked into joining DOS, more insidious events unfold all around NXIVM, which lead to Sarah taking action to protect herself and the women around her. The testimony of a women shunned by the NXIVM community and confined to a room in a suburban townhouse for two years was the focus of an episode in the second season of HBO's "The Vow." The witness, identified only as Daniela, took the stand for several days during former NXIVM leader Keith Raniere's trial in 2019. She detailed a pattern of years of grooming and manipulation by Raniere, who ordered her confinement in 2010 after she admitted to kissing another man. On this episode of "NXIVM on Trial," Times Union Editor Casey Seiler, producer Jessica Marshall and reporter Robert Gavin discuss the episode, and many of the details left out of it that were revealed at trial.
Lauren Salzman's gut-wrenching testimony in the trial of NXIVM founder Keith Raniere took center stage in the fourth episode of the new season of HBO's "The Vow." Salzman's account painted an emotionally disturbing and revealing picture of Raniere's pervasive pattern of physical and emotional abuse of women in the organization—including holding their fertility hostage, forcing them into group sex acts, and gaslighting. On this episode of "NXIVM on Trial," Times Union Editor Casey Seiler, reporter Robert Gavin and producer Jessica Marshall discuss the new installment of the series and how it handles the testimony of the prosecution's lead witness.

A federal judge sentenced NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman to three and a half years in prison this week. She was the last of the major players charged in criminal court in the NXIVM saga to receive a sentence. In the courtroom, eight of Salzman's victims described her as a cold, calculating enabler and enforcer for cult leader Keith Raniere. Judge Nicholas Garaufis admonished the 67-year-old Halfmoon resident, saying her actions "left trauma and destruction in your wake.” On this episode of NXIVM on Trial, Times Union Editor-in-Chief Casey Seiler and criminal justice reporter Rob Gavin discuss the sentence and its significance.

Last month a federal judge spared high-ranking NXIVM defector Lauren Salzman any prison time. Judge Nicholas Garaufis also sharply questioned why authorities in the Capital Region failed to bring a criminal case against Keith Raniere and what he termed the "NXVIM sex cult," despite abundant evidence of wrongdoing. On this episode of "NXIVM on Trial," Times Union Editor Casey Seiler and criminal justice reporter Robert Gavin discuss Salzman's sentence, the judge's admonition, and her mother, NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman, who is expected to be sentenced in September.

The sentencing of Keith Raniere and Clare Bronfman capped off a long year of delays, documentaries and major developments in the NXIVM saga. As the end of 2020 nears, Times Union Editor Casey Seiler and reporter Robert Gavin look back at what transpired in the past year, and what's likely to come in 2021. Could Allison Mack face sentencing? Mack, Nancy Salzman and others still await their fate. And what of the group of determined "NXIVM dead-enders" who remain faithful to Keith Raniere?
On this edition of Parallax Views, the multi-level marketing NXIVM has gained national infamy as the "Hollywood Sex Cult" that landed its founder Keith Raniere, Smallville actress Allison Mack, and others in prison on multiple counts related to horrifically abusive behaviors against its members. The sensational headlines, however, may not do justice to understanding the true depravity of Keith Raniere, known within the cult as "Vanguard", and the horror show of NXIVM. Joining us on this edition of the program to unravel the sordid story and provide insight into the mind of a cult leader is Keith Raniere's ex-girlfriend, the "Patient Zero" of NXIVM, Toni Natalie and journalist Chet Hardin, who has been one of the main journalists covering the cult. Together Natalie and Hardin have authored the new book The Program: Inside the Mind of Keith Raniere and The Rise and Fall of NXIVM. We discuss Toni's story from how she met Raniere through the company Consumers Byline Inc. to the gaslighting she experienced after crossing Raniere and finally bearing witness to the fall of NXIVM's founder at his trial. Chet fills us in on how he began reporting on NXIVM and his experiences with its members. Additionally, Chet notes that, while NXIVM may have connections to political campaigns of the Clinton family, Raniere and his cult's beliefs share a great deal in common with the right-wing ideologies espoused online by "incels" and "the red pill" in regards to women. Toni notes that the story of NXIVM is not over yet and that victims, like the late Kristin Snyder, still deserve justice. Kathy, Mark and Burk take a look at two sets of documentaries about a multi-level marketing scam gone bad called NXIVM headed up by Keith Raniere, and we decide that it’s best to watch both series - starting with THE VOW on HBO and then for the rest of the story, check out SEDUCED: INSIDE THE NXVIM CULT on STARZ.We review THE VOW, directed by Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer, which is a 9 episode series that gradually guides you through what lured people in, and then SEDUCED, directed by Cecelia Peck, which continues and expands on the story, and in 4 episodes, it’s shocking, haunting and brutal. If you watch the news, you know that justice eventually found the right people, but it’s not an easy journey. Featuring Catherine Oxenberg, India Oxenberg, Bonnie Piesse, Sarah Edmondson and Mark Vicente. It’s a harrowing look into a nightmarish cult with a despotic overlord and followers who at first glance seem to be these numbed-out gullible people who got played by a maniac, but as you watch, you realize that the folks who survived this horror aren’t what you might expect. Hosts Bob Keen, Andre Hashem, and Michael Johnson are here to serve you a Mai Tai with a side of bad guys In this episode we catch up with Keith Raniere, but first we learn about one of his first soldiers Toni Natalie, who through one of the worst beginnings of a person’s life is formed into the person she will inevitably become. We also are introduced to Nancy Salzman, another woman who will become very influential, she joins the cult through unlikely means. We also learn about the NXIVM ranks, they’re like children’s karate classes, also the 12 rules. Support us on patreon https://www.patreon.com/bloodonthesand These are the 12 rules of NXIVM: Success Is an internal state of clear, honest knowledge of what I am, my value in the world, and my responsibility for the way I react to all things. There are no ultimate victims; therefore, I will not choose to be a victim.I am committed to be successful. I understand each of us must raise ourselves—and thereby raise all others—as all others raise us. This is interdependence.Success in my own right is my earned success. True success cannot be stolen, copied or received by happenstance. I will not masquerade as successful by these methods or any other. I will earn my success.Tribute is a form of payment and honor. It is giving credit where credit is due. I will use tribute to uphold others beyond my petty likes and dislikes. As a result, I will define my self and my true contribution to humankind.Successful people do not steal and they have no desire or need to steal, I will not steal anything. I will always earn what I need and desire. Copying without permission or tribute is not the highest form of flattery; it is theft. Theft is also taking or receiving something without fully earning it; it is always at the expense, no matter how small, of others.Inner honesty and integrity are the highest human values and the foundation of the human psychology. All other values arise from them. I will never trade my integrity or inner honesty for any other value .It is never worth it.The methods and information I learn in ESP are for my use only. I will not speak of them or in any way give others knowledge of them outside ESP. Part of the condition of being accepted into ESP is to keep all its information confidential. If I violate this, I am breaking a promise and breaching my contract, but more importantly, I am compromising my inner honesty and integrity.True success is never at the expense of others. As a successful individual, I will never envy another’s success, I will rejoice because I realize the success of others raises me up just a little bit more because I am also part of the human team. The actualization of human potential by anyone is a tribute to all team humankind. If others are successful, I will protect their success against those who envy them. I pledge to purge myself of all parasite and envy-based habits, and replace them with the habits of effort and interdependence.I will unreservedly accept the success I have earned. I will accept no more and no less; this is accepting with integrity, I will give unreservedly to those who have earned it; this is giving with integrity. I will accept with integrity as easily as I give with integrity. To not accept what I am worth, or what I have earned, is to devalue myself and thereby all others.People control the money, wealth and resources of the world. It is essential for the survival of humankind for these things to be controlled by successful, ethical people. I pledge to ethically control as much of the money, wealth and resources of the world as possible within my success plan. I will always support the ethical control of these things.
What is the cult secret that NXIVM and its DOS "secret sisterhood" were trying so hard to protect? They were not afraid to commit crimes by manipulating, intimidating and sexually abusing their victims in order to protect "the secret." No journalist has ever bothered to investigate "the secret" that Keith Raniere (NXVIM founder), Nancy Salzman (president), Allison Mack (gatekeeper & recruiter), Clare Bronfman (funder) & others were trying so hard to protect. Hey everyone! We're taking the week off, but we'll be back next week with an all new episode. We decided to re-release this episode since the new HBO docuseries "The Vow" has propelled this story back into the news. You can also head over to our Patreon for some bonus content like our weekly mixed bags and monthly minisodes. Thanks so much & keep it creepy! Self-Help. Personal Growth. Life-improvement. Multi-level marketing schemes promise riches, better lives, and unimagined happiness. But beneath the surface of this organization was a secret society that drained its members of money, personal autonomy, and even their lives.
In 1998, Keith Raneire and Nancy Salzman founded a personal development company called Executive Success Programs (ESP). By 2002, the name of the organization was changed to NXIVM. This organization provided courses meant to help people with self-improvement, but the rules and practices made the organization seem more like a cult. Years later, ex NXIVM members came forward about an alleged sex cult ran by the founders of NXIVM. Was NXIVM really focused on self improvement, or were the techniques actually ways to brainwash the members to join the NXIVM cult?
Hey Spooksters! In today's episode are kicking off another 2 Parter for you! This time we are bringing you the sex cult, NXIVM. We'll start with some background to lay the foundation for you. We'll go over co-founder Keith Rainere's early life & how he got to the position of a cult leader, the other co-founder Nancy Salzman, and how they came together. After this, we'll also talk about the creation of NXIVM, noteworthy members (spoilers there's tons of celebrities), and begin to walk through the practices and ideations they had. NXVIM / JNESS / ESP: Executive Success Programs / DOS (omg pick a name already!) are all the names of a cult and its subsets led by Keith Rainier, Allison Mack and Nancy Salzman. The cult started in the 90's and was taken down in 2018-present by a number of victims who came forward and shared accounts of sex crimes, sex trafficking, extortion, and blackmail all executed by the leaders of the cult. Maria is joined by the hilarious (and very handsome) Kash Abulmalik and their guest, Pete Zias (also very handsome).
NXIVM was founded in 1998 as a multi-level marketing company that offered "Executive Success Programs" and self improvement seminars. Keith Raniere was one of the founders and he said the purpose of the company was to "have people experience more joy in their lives." It was a pyramid scheme where those involved called each other Nxians. In 1996 the company said that it wasn’t a pyramid scheme but agreed to pay a 40,000$ fine and was permanently banned from "promoting, offering or granting participation in a chain distribution scheme". In 2003 nearly 3,700 people had taken their classes. Details began to emerge in October 2017 when the New York Times wrote an article about DOS, a secret sisterhood within NXIVM where the female members were referred to as ‘slaves’ and were branded with the initials of the founders. They were also beaten and required to hand over nude photos as collateral. DOS stood for a Latin phrase meaning “Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions” women were slaves and had masters and were ordered to do sexual things with Keith Ranier the group's leader. Allison Mack was recruited by another actress and got heavily involved in the cult. She became close with Nancy Salzman, one of the co-founders of NXIVM and she began to recruit other members, including young women. One of these women was Nicole. At the time of the recruitment, Nicole did not know that the all women's group was a group of sex slaves headed up by Keith Ranier, or that she would be branded with his initials. She testified that once she was a part of the group she was told to seduce Ranier and was blindfolded, tied down and told to have oral sex with someone but she had no idea what their identity was. She claimed to have had physical punishments and required to have close up photos of her vulva. Once she was in the group she had to refer to Mack as "master" and always have her phone on for "readiness drills" where if her master texted her she would have to immediately respond. Mack later plead guilty to conspiracy, extortion and forced labor charges, but not sex trafficking. Clare Bronfman, the heiress to Seagram, also paid the the legal fees of her accused fellow sex cult members.
