It's September! Pumpkin spice lattes are back on sale, the Halloween aisles are up and stocked at stores like Target and CVS, Halloween mazes are getting ready to open, and here in Los Angeles temperatures are dipping down out of the low hundreds to the high nineties and low hundreds. And here at the Dana Gould Hour Podcast are rarin' to go. Sam Morrill is here. Sam is one of the best comedians out there right now. Flat out. Done. His special You've Changed is currently on Amazon Prime and his previous Netflix special, Same Time Tomorrow is now available on his YouTube channel. One of the best, Same Morril is here. Also, in our second half, moving into our holiday mood, Orenda Fink is here. Music fans will know Orenda as the co-founder of Azure Ray, she's also performed with Rilo Kiley and The Feint among others, but she has a new book out entitled The Witch's Daughter which is a memoir of her childhood with a mother who was a self-proclaimed witch. Whether she has supernatural powers or not remains to be proven but she put a lot of time and energy into casting spells and the like. It's an entertaining and sometimes harrowing story, to be completely honest and she's here to talk all about it. Orenda Fink. True Tales From Weirdsville takes you into through the past 80 year history of UFOs in America, from the famous Kenneth Arnold Mt. Ranier sighting that coined the phrase “flying saucer” in 1947 to the revelation in the pages of the New York Times of the Department Of Defense's Office Of Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification. And. Along the way. One of my favorite topics, UFO religions!

Segment 2, September 16th, 2023 What's the background of a Charlotte-area businessman? He may work with a business that you know, maybe he works with your property, or your family. Maybe you grew up with him or went to his school. However- you probably don't know one of his passions over his life and career & how the directions within those passions came about. Walter Bridgeman is the owner of Remedics Restoration Carolinas. He purchased that business in 2016. Although he takes care of properties that have had water, fire, mold, smoke damage he began a resume of adventure years before. Introduced to the outdoors growing up in Charlotte through Scouting & a NOLS course while attending UNC - Chapel Hill, it was a Boy Scout trip the introduced him to mountaineering. On this segment we'll learn Bridgeman's story of Divine Intervention. He'll be telling this true, autobiographical account at Storyteller's Night at Jesse Brown's on Thursday, September 21st, 2023. Bridgeman will be joining Tom Blocker telling his story Fast Lane & Gracy Ly & Marty Ohlhaut with their family saga, Tent for Seven. We'll learn about some of the mountains, the dangers, the fears, and the fun. A few of the mountains discussed & climbed are Ranier, Baker, Denali, Mt. Blanc, Grand Teton, Washington in the winter, & Pico de Orizaba. Note: Bridgeman has shopped in all the outdoor stores that Jesse Brown's has had since 1971. In fact, Bridgeman thought the SouthPark-area was far away from Cotswold. Now it seems so close to get to Jesse Brown's.

At the end they reveal everything they did to ready their van Rover for the colder Colorado winters. On this episode, we talked about: Intentionally living out who I am If I'm going to fail, I'm going to fail forward every time Knowing what is the self Finding what matters Owning yourself in the present moment We are what we do, we become the choices we make Embracing your authenticity I am creating my relational reality moment by moment Evolving and absorbing experiences Start to be real with yourself Community burst eldership Initiation into warriorhood Beginning to deconstruct internally "We begin to value authenticity over performance and begin to reward truth over pretends, and that begins to make a shift" "At some point in time, we learn how to be a particular kind of archetype in life and we keep on showing up to them" "I can transform my life to become a new character and in fact, I must if I want to respond to the life that it's in front of me" About Ranier: An experienced teacher, writer, speaker and spiritual director, Rainier has embraced life for all that it is. He has celebrated its highs and learned from its lows. He has managed a Fortune 500 company and built businesses, he has also elegantly blown them up, burned them down, and started over from scratch. Through the various positions he has held, he has discovered that life must be claimed to hold any worth. His work is to inspire others to live, fully and deeply, in the here and now. Sharing the Gospel is the most important thing you can do for your kids, but perhaps the second most important thing is teaching them how to handle money wisely. We'll talk about that with Art Rainer today. Art Rainer is the author of several books on personal finance, including a few on teaching kids about money. We recently talked about Ranier's 3-volume series The Secret Slide Money Club, which has very entertaining and educational stories for younger kids, teaching them how to handle money from a biblical perspective. Today, Art Ranier explains why it is so important to teach kids financial stewardship and understanding God's ownership. He says it's never too early to start teaching your kids and grandkids, beginning with very simple concepts and working your way up to more complex principles as your kids get older and are able to grasp more advanced lessons. Rainer and Rob West explain the value of the jar approach: One jar devoted to money to live, one to save, and one for giving. They also discuss whether parents should pay their kids for completing household chores or for completing extra tasks. Additionally, Rainier explains the vital importance of teaching kids the biblical concept of generosity and how to convey the principle. They also talk about preparing kids financially for heading off to college, when they're likely to be tempted to pile up credit cards and other debt. Art Rainer's 3-book series for kids called The Secret Slide Money Club. And you can learn more about Art at ArtRanier.com. On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: ● How do you go about creating a spending plan? ● Can you repay Social Security benefits to expand benefits down the road? Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000 or email them to Questions@MoneyWise.org. Debut author, Autumn Lytle bursts onto the book scene with an eye-opening, timely novel, All That Fills Us, that really addresses an issue that has become almost an epidemic during this difficult time--eating disorders. This book comes at the issue by taking a woman through tough places to work out tough issues in her heart, and I can't wait to read it! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Who Knew an Eating Disorder Could Inspire a Great Book Full of Adventure? I don't know about you, but the idea of trekking two thousand miles from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Mt. Ranier does not fill my soul with joy. Not only that, roughing it along the way, and using it as a way to confront her personal struggles and demons? AAAK! But Autumn Lytle doesn't just give you a researched book full of pat answers in this story. She offers a perspective from someone who has faced these same issues herself. Autumn (#notAmy) tells how so many of the thoughts and introspections are quite personal, learned from experience and shared with others. The pandemic saw a surge of people struggling with eating disorders, especially among teens, so the timing of this book's release seems handpicked by the Lord. But that's not all. Autumn has another book that I'm dying to read--one about a young college girl who gets pregnant and what the Lord does in that girl's life... and this story is also quite personal to Autumn--inspired by her parents' lives (and therefore hers as well). I'm DYING to read this book, guys. So here's the deal. We NEED to read All That Fills Us. It's imperative that she get lots of readers and as many reviews as possible so a publisher will offer a contract for this other book. I'm begging everyone to read this book (after all, it sounds amazing!!!) and leave a review... literally everywhere. If you loved the book, PLEASE end that review with, "I cannot wait for more from this author" or some equivalent. Let's show the publisher just how great we think Autumn and her books are! Hey, they've even made it EASY. Until release day, this book is on sale for just 9.59 with FREE shipping from Baker Book House. That's nearly the price of a Kindle book these days. Beg your library to get it. Listen on Hoopla or something. Let's get the word out about this awesome book so we can get the next. I'm seriously begging here, folks! All That Fills Us by Autumn Lytle Mel Ellis knows that her eating disorder is ruining her life. But she can't bring herself to go to rehab so someone else can fix her mess. Broken and empty in more ways than one, Mel makes one last-ditch effort to make hers a story worth telling. She will walk her own road to recovery along the lesser-known trails of the North American wilderness. Though she is physically and mentally unprepared to face the difficulties that lay ahead, she sets off on foot from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and heads toward Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State. During the long journey, she meets strangers with their own stories, as well as ghosts from her past who can no longer be ignored. But though the land she travels threatens her success at every turn, it's her own dark thoughts she'll have to overcome in order to find peace in the life and the body she has been given. With pitch-perfect timing and delightfully witty self-awareness, debut author Autumn Lytle masterfully leads readers on a journey down the hard path toward healing. You can find out more about Autumn Lytle from her WEBSITE. Like to listen on the go? You can find Because Fiction Podcast at: Apple Castbox Google Play Libsyn RSS Spotify Stitcher Amazon and more!

Kelly Brown Willis is a paragon of positivity and is perseverance personified! Growing up in a family of nine no doubt forged her grit, toughness, hustle, and drive. As a mom of four with a big appetite for travel, running adventures, and community, these qualities serve her well. Kelly traveled the world for 18 months on the cheap with her husband, Rich, before having children—soaking in the culture & experiences in Syria and Guatemala—and learned she could do hard things like climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro & Mt. Ranier (which took two tries because of the technical difficulty and extra challenges from having epilepsy). Kelly spent a full year working on her strength and agility and came back a year later and got it done! She struggled in her first year of law school, but pushed through with encouragement from her dad (who was also her mentor) to achieve her career dream of becoming Assistant District Attorney of Atlanta. We discuss: the influence of growing up in a big family, her dad/mentor, traveling the world, climbing adventures, law school becoming an ADA, finding running & the marathon, the running community, AbbottWMM Majors, WAG Champs, chasing another sub-3, community service, and more. Kelly loves all things Abbott World Marathon Majors and is one of just 45 to earn TWO Six-Star medals, one of 85 to run an Abbott Slam (all six in the same calendar year, 2018), and qualified and ran in the first AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships in London. I had the honor of sharing the stage with Kelly on a panel at the London Marathon discussing our Abbott World Marathon Majors adventures and her positive energy really shined through and connected with the crowd! What a journey from 4:15 marathoner to her current 2:57 PR! Kelly's dreaming of taking another big swing at sub-3 in Berlin and I'll be there running & rooting for her to get it DONE! Mad RESPECT for this badass mom of 4, running at this level and putting out so much positive energy into the running community! I hope you all enjoy this convo as much as we did! In one of our most insightful interviews to date, we chop it up with NextShark Editor-at-Large Ranier Maningding, better known as the mastermind behind the social media phenomenon The Love Life of An Asian Guy. He dishes on how nearly every marginalized group adheres to the civil rights blueprints that Black people created, the responsibilities and loneliness that come with helming one of the only Asian-American platforms of its scale, how media whitewashing has impacted how Asian-Americans self-identify, how Black and Asian communities have been pitted against each other, and the complicated legacy of George Tekai's activism. Additionally, Jay is a sore loser, Alex is afraid of goblins, and @ElaineVictoria can sing her entire ass off. Intro courtesy of @ElaineVictoria. In Episode 15, Mackie and I sit down to discuss a 65 day and 17,000 mile cross-country road trip that went down in the summer of 1996. On the journey, we hiked sections of the Appalachian, Continental, and Pacific Crest National Scenic Trails and visited some treasured American wilderness including Isle Royal, Glacier, Mt. Ranier, Redwoods, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon National Park. In the podcast, Mackie talks about the adventure, some major mishaps, high and low moments from the trip, his favorite National Parks, and why this was among the best experiences of his life. This is the second of two podcasts about mega road-trips that I took in the mid-90's. The map highlights each route with the red lines marking the 1996 trip that I did with Mackie and the green lines marking a 1998 trip with the Ox. You can also follow this link to a photo gallery or a video from the 1996 trip.
