—Here are 3 big things you need to know— One — President Biden is in Germany today, where he'll participate in a summit with the leaders of Germany, France and the UK. On the table is support for Ukraine in its war against the Russian invasion and efforts to stabilize the Middle East. His trip was rescheduled from last week after the devastation wrought by Hurricane Milton in Florida. Two ---- White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre is telling Stellantis to keep the promises the automaker made in the contract agreement with the UAW. The company is said to be considering building the popular Ram 1500 pickup in Mexico instead of the U.S. The pickup is currently built at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, while heavy-duty Ram trucks and ProMaster vans are built in Mexico. And number three — A former Nevada Democratic official convicted of killing a journalist will spend at least 28 years in prison. Former Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles was found guilty in August for the murder of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German over articles about him. A jury sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 20 years. On Wednesday, a judge added eight years to the minimum time behind bars.
YOU DECIDE 2024 coverage continues as Biden wins the Democratic primary in South Carolina over the weekend. Next week, several events besides the Super Bowl happen in Nevada, including the Nevada Democratic primary, the Nevada Republican primary, and the Nevada Republican caucus...Most states have either caucuses or a primary. So why is Nevada holding both? That's because a state law requires Nevada to hold a primary election, but the Nevada GOP voted to hold their own caucuses, which are party-run meetings open to Republicans only. They'll only award delegates for that contest, rendering the state-run presidential primary purely symbolic. Voters have received mail ballots for the Feb. 6 primary that don't list front-runner Donald Trump's name. Why? Trump is competing in the party-run caucuses on Feb. 8, when he is poised to take all the state's delegates on a march toward the nomination.

But honestly, folks, this is a Chris G interview.
A coalition of progressive candidates backed by the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America took over the leadership of the Nevada Democratic Party on March 6 and swept all five party leadership positions in a contested election. Judith Whitmer was elected chair. The establishment had moved $450,000 out of the party's coffers and into the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s account. The DSCC plans to use the money toward the 2022 reelection bid of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a first-term Democrat. The staff members who resigned included the party’s operations director, research director, communications director, and finance director. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/district34/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/district34/support

NEWS 3/9/21: Progressives SWEEP Nevada Democratic Party, Joe Biden Shows Dementia Signs, Lula Charges Dropped!
Welcome to episode 28 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with tenth-year MMT activist and Ireland resident Mike Hall. For the past three years, Mike has served as an administrator of the popular Facebook groups Modern Monetary Theory for Real Progressives, and MMT for the British People. Mike and I first talk about how the manufacturing collapse in Ireland in the years preceding the 2008 housing crisis, is what led to his being "made redundant," and was the catalyst for his discovering MMT. The heart of our conversation is an in depth discussion on the job guarantee and – in normal times outside of our now-raging global pandemic – the absurdity of the UBI, or Universal Basic Income, program. I personally conclude that even moderately seasoned MMT activists should probably avoid discussing both topics in public, entirely. This is primarily due to the massive amount of background and common language required to start the discussion. It’s also because it too often turns to sensitive political and decidedly microeconomic topics, such as the unfounded concerns that the job guarantee encourages pointless work and requires individuals to "work or starve." On the other hand, the potential negatives of the UBI program are plentiful. This includes: UBI encourages passiveness, especially in our giving up our last vestiges of political power for the false promise of total personal freedom. The idea of total automation, in addition to being fantastic science fiction, means that human energy will largely no longer be required. This implies an even greater need for fossil fuels or alternative energy in order to power the robots. total automation eliminates the need for workers entirely. The only ones that remain, at least until SkyNet comes online, are those who build, design, market, ship, maintain – and supposedly protect us from – the robots. At the same time, it gives those handing out the checks an excuse to shame the recipients, because you’re getting a check. (To be clear, the federal job guarantee and UBI programs are not mutually exclusive alternatives or competitors. They are designed to address different goals.) In the last third of our conversation, Mike then shares his views on why the Labor Party and Jeremy Corbyn lost the election in December of 2019. We compare it to Bernie Sanders’ then-rocket-like ascendancy, following his blowout victory in the Nevada Democratic caucus. We end with a brief discussion comparing Medicare For All and the National Health Service (or NHS), and the unrealistic concern by a coworker of mine, that daring to implement Medicare For All in the United States would be a disaster because of how, in her incorrect view, the NHS works so poorly in the U.K., and how it has been sabotaged and underfunded for decades. A final note: This was the last interview I recorded before the coronavirus outbreak and quarantine. #LearnMMT For an overview of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) with many reliable sources to learn more, here is a good place to start: On the web: My layperson intro with many expert sources listed at the bottom. In this episode Kelley and Jamille discuss the democratic winners and losers of the Nevada debate and the series of mishaps Wendy Williams has faced in the recent weeks.
On this episode of “Political Misfits,” hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas broke down the Nevada Democratic primary - the winners, the losers, the ramifications, and the way it broke the pundits’ hearts. The Democratic Party can no longer ignore the Vermont senator’s movement. Joel Segal, co-author of the original Medicare for All bill and national director of the Justice Action Mobilization Network, joined Bob and Jamarl to talk about the importance of healthcare policy in this primary, and the great divide the US must reckon with between those who know what it is like to struggle to make ends meet, to have to choose between paying bills or buying groceries, and those who don’t. The point was driven home by a caller who shared her story of struggling to maintain insurance for a very sick child and the sacrifices her family has had to make in that struggle. Sputnik news analyst Walter Smolarek reported from London on the extradition trial of Julian Assange, describing the tactics of the legal team representing the US in the case. He also illustrated the passion of the protesters gathered outside the courthouse, many of whom have traveled great distances to be there. This passion is not echoed among Assange’s fellow journalists, who have largely distanced themselves from the WikiLeaks publisher, allowing his trial to be framed as a criminal matter, not an attack on journalism. Brianna Griffith, producer and host of the People's Republic Austin radio program, spoke with Bob and Jamarl in the second hour, offering her take on the media meltdown following Sanders’ romp in Nevada. Mainstream media is just now waking up to the Sanders’ movement - as is the Democratic establishment, which spent much of the weekend either begging for Barack Obama to step in to stop it or sharing smears of Sanders as a Russian favorite. Because Russiagate was back - but only briefly. Friday ended with a story alleging Russia was interfering in the primary to help Sanders as well as Trump. Just two days later, CNN of all networks was calling that analysis greatly exaggerated.
Ryan talks to Nevada Democratic strategist Megan Jones about the results of the Nevada caucus and what they tell us about the 2020 race.

With the beginning of early caucusing in Nevada and the formal caucuses days away, "campaign officials and Democratic activists are increasingly alarmed that they might prove a debacle as damaging as the vote in Iowa," the Washington Post reported Sunday. Politico reported that same day, "Anxiety is rising over the possibility of another tech-induced meltdown at the Nevada Democratic caucuses on Saturday." Folks, all I can say to this one is, really, come on.CBS News has jumped on the bandwagon and aired a story attacking Radio Sputnik. The print version of the story opens by saying, “As the FBI and other federal agencies look high and low for signs of Russian interference in the 2020 election, Russian propaganda is being transmitted on America's airwaves in Kansas City, Missouri.” Last week we discussed the New York Times piece entitled, "Playing on Kansas City Radio: Russian Propaganda," part of which states, "In January, Radio Sputnik, a propaganda arm of the Russian government, started broadcasting on three Kansas City-area radio stations during prime drive times. ... In the United States, talk radio on Sputnik covers the political spectrum from right to left, but the constant backbeat is that America is damaged goods." So, what are we to make of all of this?Four US peace activists - Adrienne Pine, David Paul, Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese, aka the Embassy Protectors - "were arrested on May 16 after staying in the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC, for 37 days to prevent it from being handed over to right-wing Venezuelan coup-leaders in violation of the Vienna Convention. ... The activists face federal charges punishable by up to a year in prison, a $100,000 fine each and restitution to the government for police time and damages," Popular Resistance reported in December. According to a Friday article in The Grayzone by Code Pink's Leonardo Flores, "The Trump administration's case against Venezuelan embassy protectors was severely biased, but ended up with a hung jury. The mistrial is a victory for sovereignty and democracy, and another failure in the coup attempt." How daunting of a reality is it when you are faced with going up against your own government in court, and you know that you are right?GUESTS:Dr. Clarence Lusane — African-American author, activist, lecturer and chair of the political science department at Howard University. "Doubling down on his feud with the Democratic Party leadership, Senator Bernie Sanders said that if elected president, he will not reappoint Democratic National Committee chairwoman, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. He made the comments during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper that is set to air on Sunday. Mr. Sanders also said he was supporting Tim Canova, a law professor who has begun an insurgent campaign against Ms. Wasserman Schultz for her South Florida congressional seat. They will face off in a primary this summer. “Well, clearly, I favor her opponent,” Mr. Sanders told Mr. Tapper. “His views are much closer to mine.” For months, Mr. Sanders has accused the party of favoring Hillary Clinton, often calling her the “anointed candidate.” He has criticized the party for a debate schedule that his campaign says favors Mrs. Clinton; an arrangement under which Mrs. Clinton raises money for the party; and the appointment of Clinton supporters as leaders of important convention committees. Most recently, he and the party have sparred over what happened at the Nevada Democratic convention a week ago. There, Sanders supporters disrupted the proceedings in a fight over delegates and the state party chairwoman was later threatened. After the party rebuked Mr. Sanders for not clearly condemning what had occurred, his campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, accused Ms. Wasserman Schultz of “throwing shade on the Sanders campaign from the very beginning.” This week, Ms. Wasserman Schultz pushed back against the Sanders campaign in an interview with CNN. “We’ve had the same rules in place that elected Barack Obama,” she told the network. “These rules were adopted for state parties all across the country in 2014.” In a statement on Saturday, she said that “even though Senator Sanders has endorsed my opponent, I remain, as I have been from the beginning, neutral in the presidential Democratic primary.” BIO: Michael Loftus is a writer and comedian who is currently hosts the syndicated show The Flipside with Michael Loftus. Obviously, we have to talk about the Nevada Democratic caucus and the crazy South Carolina Republican primary. We take a moment to lament Jeb Bush's exit from the campaign, and we discuss the state of the race going forward. We've been disappointed that education has barely been a side note in the presidential race, so devote The Suit to our thoughts on education reform. Finally, we talk Oscar nominations in The Heels.
