Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) President Thulani Ngwenya has drawn a line under political correctness because he believes workers should not have to pay the price of government's failures, politicians' greed, or financial mismanagement. In this interview with BizNews, has hails the “surprise” support from new Correctional Services Minister Dr Pieter Groenewald, and hails him for acknowledging the severity of lack of resources and the impact of government's broken promise of 40,000 new members, as well as for pledging to implement the proposed shift system, and for agreeing on the necessity of the self-sustainability programme in Correctional Services which POPCRU first tabled in 2015, and which involves putting inmates to work to contribute toward their own upkeep while gaining valuable skills. He also has praise for new Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. “We have agreed with him that we are going to have a sort of a presentation with him to show him the loopholes”. Furthermore, Ngwenya shares details of the urgent reforms POPCRU is fighting for in the Criminal Justice Cluster.

It's been a while since we last had a “Coffee with Consultants” episode, where I get the privilege and honour of interviewing a consultant in a specialty to ask them about the perks, pitfalls and perils of their specialty, the decision algorithm that led them to choose it, and what advice they'd pass on to junior doctors who'd like to pursue this path in future. Coming up in today's episode, I sat down in studio with Dr Bongi Rubushe-Ngwenya, a specialist gynaecologist and obstetrician, to ask her about the path to specialising in these two related and yet distinct disciplines. Dr Bongi completed her undergraduate medical training at WITS and undertook her Obstetrics and Gynaecology training at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital where she now works as a consultant with a special interest in reproductive medicine. In her time there, she's established an infertility and endocrine clinic to assist women combatting infertility and wishing to have a child. Recently she also established an office hysteroscopy clinic that has been instrumental in reducing theatre load and decongesting the backlog of patients in the Obs and Gynae department. Dr Rubushe-Ngwenya has a special interest in endoscopic surgery and is currently the president of the WITS Gynae Endoscopy Training Unit. This unit has been pivotal in improving the laparoscopic skills of Gynaecologists by hosting skills workshops and developing an associated curriculum. Finally, she thoroughly enjoys reading and is immensely passionate about teaching and passing on her knowledge to others. Makheni Zonneveld and Tokozile N. Ngwenya are passionate about children's nutrition. Food affects the quality of one's day from your energy levels to your ability to concentrate, or get adequate rest. We have to question, is what we feed our children harming them or benefiting them. We live in communities where fast food has been made a status symbol of success. Where stores sell us conveniently packaged foods for the busy parent. Where schools rarely offer guidance on what foods would be appropriate or nutritious. And more often than not as parents we are doing what we can with the knowledge that we have which may not be much. How can we do better? Let's talk about it. *** The world has advanced so quickly. We're celebrating fifty episodes of EMPIRE LINES, with three specials recorded offline and in the museum space – this time in the Tate Modern, in London, for their latest exhibition Surrealism Beyond Borders. Returning to EMPIRE LINES, Richard Gray joins curator Carine Harmand to explore the works of Mozambican artist, Malangatana Ngwenya. Plus, curator Keith Shiri unveils Malangatana's restored mural at the all-new Africa Centre in London. White gnashing teeth, wide eyes, and clawed hands of humans and animals dominate Malangatana's Untitled (1967). Otherwise titled How Long Will This Go On?, the overwhelming oil work is a horrifying visualisation of the violence endured by his native Mozambique, as it struggled for independence from Portugal's Estado Novo until 1975. A prominent political figure, Malangatana joined the Mozambique liberation movement FRELIMO in 1964, and was imprisoned by the Portuguese secret police. Neither a propagandist nor a 'pamphleteer', his works nevertheless embody his own politics and biography, from his artist's block after prison, to his efforts to memorialise the 'Mozambican personality'. Practicing in both colonial and post-colonial Mozambique, he straddled empire lines across Africa, contesting the notion of Europeanisation as civilisation. Set against the exhibition and sounds of Mozambique musicians, curator Carine Harmand and Richard Gray reveal the two way flows between European modernism and Africanist art, and how the artist appropriated and benefitted from surrealism's international network. Plus, film curator Keith Shiri shares his experiences with the artist at the recent reopening of the Africa Centre. Surrealism Beyond Borders runs at the Tate Modern in London until 29 August 2022. The Africa Centre in London reopened on 9 June 2022. Part of EMPIRE LINES at 50, featuring three exhibitions ahead of their final weekend. See the episode notes for links to the last tickets, and the other episodes on Althea McNish and Ingrid Pollard. PRESENTERS: Carine Harmand, Assistant Curator of International Art at Tate Modern, and of Surrealism Beyond Borders. Richard Gray, postgraduate research student at SOAS University of London. He was the co-curator of Our Sophisticated Weapon: Posters of the Mozambican Revolution at the Brunei Gallery, and formerly a 'cooperante internacionalista' (internationalist co-worker), contracted as a teacher by the Mozambican government in the late 1970s. Hello everyone!Welcome back to episode 83.Sandiso Ngwenya is my guest today; she was born and raised in Zimbabwe and now resides in South Africa. In this episode, we discuss how her other interests contribute to her being more than just a scientist. Sandiso describes her love of beauty, particularly makeup, and we talk about the stereotypes of what female scientists are supposed to look like and how new age female scientists, such as herself, are changing that. We then talk about how she ended up in the field of chemistry by chance. . Sandiso is a PhD student in chemistry at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, and she has excelled in this field since then. Currently, her research is focused on the synthesis of important antioxidants that provide new possibilities for the treatment and prevention of UV-mediated diseases. Join in as we hear about this research, the Root of her science + MORE!#AfricansInSTEM #womeninSTEMTwitter & Instagram: @Sandiso_nYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1BL3uayeJDcpLCjHNnQSDA. Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront: Sheri and I are killing time as we wait for the departure of our boat to Robben Island to visit Nelson Mandela's prison cell. We turn a corner in the huge indoor market and there they are. I'd read about them, but never seen them for real. I felt like a kid in a candy store. The man in the shop smiled. He knew what I was feeling. You don't have to be a great player to appreciate the coolest guitar in the world. “Can I try?” I said. The man nodded, “Sure man.” I was about to join the list of people who had played a ‘Township guitar'. (Bruce Spingsteen, Bono- U2, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Peter Gabriel, Dave Mathews, Dozi, David Kramer, Neo Mnyunga- Black sunshine, Chris Rea, Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, SpyraGyra, Rob Harris- Jamiroquai, Chad Hollistar, and many more own a Township guitar.) That was the first time I met Dani Ngwenya and his Township guitars, live in person. Of all the people I have interviewed, none surpass Dani's passion, dedication and love for his life and work. But his story is about so much more than the ‘musical works of art' he and his team hand-make. Dani's story inextricably links with the early Khoisan African tribes. It is a story about freedom, self expression and the commitment to playing life to the beat of your own drum, the rhythm of your own guitar. As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit. Until next time. Lots of love. Matt and the team x

How is it that we are so quick to trust an Uber driver to get us to where we need to go but sometimes find it difficult to trust God? In this episode we speak to Thando Ngwenya about trusting God's plan even in the midst of adversity & uncertainty.
(Ep 4) In this episode Veena and Yee Hong discuss the detrimental effects pf mass incarceration with Kisana. They mention the war on drugs, Trump being a racist and a rapist, and the over policing of low income neighborhoods.
My guest today is Nomhle Ngwenya, she's a 23-year-old South African studying at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. In this episode, she recalls her deep love for geography stemming from primary school. Nomhle had a dream about being a metrologist even though the dream did not come to be; she still stayed in Geography. Currently, she second-year PhD candidate in the School of Geography and Environmental Studies. Her research is based on how green bonds, which is an emerging climate finance, can be a financial mechanism for carbon capture and storage (CCS) in South Africa. CCS has been identified as a critical technology to mitigate high carbon emissions, especially for developing countries like South Africa that are heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Secondly, in our discussion, we talk about the importance of science communication to get people to be more engaged in STEM. She adds that by utilizing the media, one can use it to reach a broad audience without any geographic restrictions. Lastly, we touch on how she balances "Nomhle as an individual" and "Nomhle, the PhD candidate." Tune in to listen to this and more.
