Misha Maseka is an award-winning filmmaker, performer, writer and composer who founded Village Girls in 2021. Born in Eswatini to Zambian parents and growing up in South Africa, Australia and settling in Canada, Misha's adaptability to culture has served her well as a storyteller. Starting her career in opera and theatre performing across Canada and Germany (Calgary Philharmonic, Theatre Calgary, Square One Media, Lyric Studio Weimar, Arts Commons), Lemba has carried over a sense of spectacle and theatricality in her style as a filmmaker. This was made apparent in her celebrated short film “Not That Deep” - winner of two Berlin Short Film Festival awards. When not creating, she has sat on various Canadian granting bodies as a juror and consultant in funding development (Canada Council of the Arts, Calgary Arts Development, Ubuntu Central Alberta, UnCommon Collective). She still makes time to write and perform music under the stage name Lemba and hosts the visual podcast “And I Wonder.” Join us on this episode as we discuss the international Black identity and assumptions of Blackness. Misha shares her story of being born an immigrant, and its role in her artistic practice, always being the new girl and the power of adaptability. She also shares the mandate and motivation behind her company Village Girls Ltd and it's impact in the community. Listen, and leave a review. This is episode 158 and we're taking an epic regional tour into the along the Limpopo River to meet with the Venda and other groups of folks who hail from the province we now call Limpopo. Thanks to listener Mushe for the suggestion. By the mid-fifteenth century Shona-speaking immigrants from Zimbabwe settled across the Limpopo River and interacted with the local Sotho inhabitants. As a result of this interaction, Shona and Sotho led to what is now regarded as a common Venda identity by the mid-sixteenth century. Venda-speaking people live mainly in the Soutpansberg area and southern Zimbabwe, but they also once lived in south-western Mozambique and north-eastern Botswana. Venda grammar and phonology is similar to Shona, particularly western Shona and Venda vocabulary has its greatest equivalent in Sotho. Phonology is the branch of linguistics that deals with systems of sounds within a language or between different languages. According to most ethnographers it is not only the Venda language, but also certain customs, such as the domba pre-marital school, that distinguish them from surrounding Shona, Sotho-Tswana and Tsonga communities. First a quick refresh. We heard in one of earlier podcasts about the Mapungubwe kingdom which lasted until the 13th Century - following which Shona speaking people's moved southwards into the Soutpansberg region over the centuries. Archaeologists have established that by the fourteenth century, or the late Mapungubwe period and what is known as and the Moloko, the early post Mapungubwe kingdoms emerged in northern Transvaal. This is where the forebears of the Venda come in. Zimbabwean ceramics help a lot here, they were produced by Shona speakers and their fourteenth century distribution demarcated the Shona trading empire centred around Great Zimbabwe. The rulers at Great Zimbabwe controlled most of the country between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers until smaller trading states broke away in the fifteenth century. I've covered this in great detail in Episodes 5, 6 and 7 if you want to refresh memories. We also know that trade between these early kingdoms and the east coast was established, goods like gold, ivory, and copper were traded with Arabic and Portuguese merchants. The Venda were directly impacted by this trade, along with another unique group called the Lemba who are directly related to ancestors who actually traded all the way from Yemen in the Middle East. More about them in a few minutes. Ceramics help us piece together the past more effectively, the period of Shona and Sotho interaction eventually involved into more than a mere overlap of these ceramic styles, because for the first time different stylistic elements appeared on the same vessels. These Letaba pots have also been unearthed in the eastern Transvaal or Limpopo Province as its now known. It is interesting that these ceramics are still produced today, these Letaba pots and ceramics are made by the Venda, the Tsonga, the Ndebele, but anthropologists and historians believe the style itself is distinctly Venda in character. The Venda kingdom pretty much stretched from the Limpopo River in the north to the Olifants and Ngwenya River, or Crocodile River, in the south, but by the time Louis Trichardt rode through their land in 1836, the great Venda empire had almost vanished, torn up by external threats — damaged by the amaNdebele and even amaZulu raiders. The second group who could be found in this territory are the Lemba. They remain one of the self-defining groups of the region who have a stunning origin story. I am going to tread quite carefully here because there's science and then there's oral tradition. As you'll hear, the Lemba believe they are related to the lost Tribes of Israel, and have recently demanded that they be recognized as such. Their narrative and origin story links them to the Middle East and the Judaism and there is DNA evidence to back them up.

Introducing Mwangala Lethbridge, an Entrepreneur, Architect, Family Woman, Politician in the making and Trauma Survivor. A Christian by faith and raised Catholic, her belief system rests on four pillars as the cornerstones that guide her purpose in life: taking ownership, reliability, commitment and resilience. She hopes to inspire change in the lives of those she is blessed to encounter. Mwangala resides both in the United Kingdom with her husband Adam and their three children and in Zambia with her son and lovely grandchildren. Still Standing is her first book. Still Standing: The Flip Side of Denial, Depression and Forgiveness, is a story that starts with tragedy and ends with acceptance and realisation of the importance to highlight mental health. This is a story of incredible resilience, which will inspire you to challenge yourself. Mwangala says: "My book is another stage of my catharsis, the process of facing down adversity and challenge. A very personal account of life-changing injuries leading to life-affirming action. An admission of overwhelming vulnerability and a celebration of family and friendship." Mwangala's story is not one of a kind, but her vulnerability in sharing what she has learnt makes this a book we can all relate to. If you want to increase your resilience, adopt a growth mindset, or just be inspired by the miracles humans can achieve when we challenge ourselves against the odds, this book is for you. There are many lessons shared in Still Standing, but if you learn just one, let that be that there is always another chapter of your life and an unknown strength to survive when the battle is both physical and mental. Depression creeps in at any age and it is important to accept that in order to heal. This memoir encourages the reader to tackle one day at a time and celebrate the smallest achievements as if they were the largest milestones Still Standing can be found at: Direct Author sales Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Still-Standing-Denial-Depression-Forgiveness-ebook/dp/B09VH4M9GB Author website - https://mwangalalethbridge.co.uk/ Connect with Mwangala here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mwangala-lethbridge-402b5020/ The Africana Woman Network is the first African Female led podcast network. Introducing Boitumelo Motsoeneng, a writer, a child of God, and storyteller, she believes in the transformative power of art and the enduring strength of integrity, service, and competence. Boitumelo strives to create stories that touch hearts inspire creativity and make a difference in the world. This is a story of tragedy and catastrophe. Rape, betrayal, homelessness, identity crisis, and fear. With each page, things seem to get worse and the glow of hope fades, but in the end, it all makes sense. The beauty of going through it all with God is that none of it is wasted, every ounce of it gives glory to God and shapes you to be like Christ. And that's what you will get to appreciate, the perfection of God when He works things out for good. This is not to say that one heals completely from things that God uses to mature and transform us. The physical trauma after rape, the psychological consequences, the difficulties in building and maintaining relationships, and the negative relationship with one's body remain part of the struggle for the longest time. Some things heal with time, but some stay for God knows how long. The ones that don't heal become a thorn in your flesh that God uses to keep you low and human, even as He makes your life better. And in this book, the author lays out where she used to be, how much she has healed, and what she still struggles with. In this episode, Dr. Noah Tamarkin (Anthropology, Cornell University) talks about his recent book, Genetics Afterlives: Black Jewish Indigeneity in South Africa (Duke University Press 2020). The book chronicles the politics of race, religion and recognition among the Lemba people of South Africa who were the subject of Jewish genetic ancestry studies in the 1980s and 1990s. He delves into the notion of indigeneity as well as the intersection of oral history, genetics and ethnography. https://www.dukeupress.edu/genetic-afterlives
We had a chance to catch up Basile Lemba as he talked about how to better leverage networking activities into more bottom line paying clients for your coaching practice. He's got a unique story and way of saying things that I KNOW you'll enjoy.
In the 1800s, a movement spread across Great Britain that convinced thousands of Englishmen they were part of an ancient Jewish tribe. It was based on a legend about an evangelizer, Joseph of Arimathea. Another ancient legend — this time about Prince Menelik and the stolen Ark of the Covenant — places the lost tribes in Ethiopia. More recently, claims by the Lemba people of South Africa spurred one researcher, known as the British Indiana Jones, even deeper into the mystery. Learn more about your ad choices.

What You'll Learn From This Episode: How to keep the family culture strong and thriving The importance of teaching kids that they are a part of something bigger than themselves Why having meals together with the family is essential Related Links and Resources: I have written recently and co-authored a book with Mark Victor Hansen, the 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' guy. And if you will go to www.auntmitzi.com, I have several free chapters of the book that we wrote together 'How to be UP in Down Times' Summary: Author, speaker, and businesswoman Mitzi Perdue holds a BA with honors from Harvard University and an MPA from George Washington University. She is a past president of the 35,000-member American Agri-Women, and she's the founder of CERES Farms. Mitzi combines the experiences of three long-time family businesses. Her father Ernest Henderson co-founded the Sheraton Hotel Chain and her late husband Frank Perdue was the second generation in the poultry company that today operates in more than 50 countries. Recently she authored "How to Make Your Family Business Last, Techniques, Advice, Checklists, and Resources for Keeping the Family Business in the Family. The 46 years since the founding of Ceres Farms, she represents more than three centuries of family business history. Here are the highlights of this episode: 2:51 Mitzi's ideal Client: My ideal client is a family who is in a family business and who would really like to see the next generation not get screwed up. Because it's so easy for family businesses to not put their enough effort, and having their children grow up with values that will help support keeping the family business in the family. 3:26Problem Mitzi helps solve: I have observed that every family that exists has a culture; but is one that came about by accident or is it one that came about by design? And the one's that came about by accident, they rarely support keeping the family business in the family. So, I help develop a culture that supports keeping the family strong and thriving. 4:19Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Mitzi: A high functioning family which is what we are all in for, is one where people enjoy being all together. They're partners, they're not torn apart by jealousy and ego. If your family is experiencing pain, my best advice to you is to get professional help before it gets worse. My second best advice is, if you're going to have outsiders to help you, have them committed to helping the whole family, not just one or two members. And what I mean by that is, families fall apart when a lawyer represents one family member against the interest of the whole family. So, don't do that. 5:19What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Mitzi and his solution: The biggest thing that they can do to help keep the family together is be very conscious of the culture you develop, including teaching the kids from the youngest age that they can't always be right. How about teaching them that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, that they're stewards. If you don't do that, the average families aren't going to make it to the next generation. If you want a successful long-lasting family, you've got to consciously figure out the values that will get you there and I certainly recommend that you buy my books to help you learn. 6:19Mitzi's Valuable Free Action (VFA): This may sound off-brand but you know what really helps families? have you come across 'How to Win Friends and Influence People'? It tells you an enormous amount about human relations that shows you that you are part of something bigger than yourself that helps solve problems and prevent problems before they escape. Both the Henderson and the Perdue (family) regularly read a book that was written generations ago. 7:09Mitzi's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): I have written recently and co-authored a book with Mark Victor Hansen, the 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' guy.

In this interview, we discuss: The biggest benefit of networking How podcasters can use networking to grow their show The biggest challenges of networking How to network without the awkwardness Much more Connect with Basile Lemba here: Profitable Networking Blueprint BL NETWORKING (571) 263-4190 Basile@basilelemba.net HOW WE THINK OF NETWORKING When you think of networking, you probably imagine walking into a room filled with salespeople all trying to jam their business card into your hand and sell you something. Why else would you network? The purpose of networking is to grow your network. It is not to make a sale to one person. One year at New Media Expo, I bought a ticket to Cliff Ravenscraft’s networking event. I thought it would be a great way to introduce my show to a ton of other podcasters who could benefit from my information. Unfortunately, I didn’t know how to network properly. When I walked into the room of about 100 people, nobody noticed. I got a drink and few snacks from the table. Still, nobody cared. I finally made my way over to one of those stand-up cocktail tables and joined a couple other podcasters. They were talking about their shows. I introduced myself and they asked about my show. After I told them a bit about this show, we talked about their shows. The conversation came to that awkward end where we have nothing left to say. One of made an excuse to go get another drink or something. It continued like that for the next 30 minutes. I finally faded out of the room unnoticed just like I arrived. Looking back on that day, I realized I was doing it all wrong. People don’t want to know about me and my show. They want to talk about themselves. If you want to be interesting, be interested. NETWORKING TO GROW As you connect with others, find out as much as you can about that person. If it would make sense to partner and help each other grow, get their contact info. Agree to follow up to see how you might help each other reach your goals. Networking is intended to find partners, not push your stuff on people. If you create a partnership with a person who can introduce you or your stuff to 100 other people, you’ve leveraged the opportunity to make as many as 100 new listeners or better yet … clients. If you sell only to the person you’ve met at the event, you’ve only created one new client. To grow your podcast, we need to find people who can introduce your show to groups of people. If you tell one person about your show, you get one new listener. If that person can put you in front of a new group of people, or simply tell their audience about you, your show can find hundreds or thousands of listeners. A PODCAST EXAMPLE I was on a coaching strategy call the other night with a producer of a real estate podcast. Just like most of my clients, he is trying to grow the audience. The podcast helps people buy and sell their home. They give tips to sell the house quickly, get the best deal and mistakes to avoid. He told me they promote the show on Facebook and through e-mail when new episodes are released. Unfortunately, those people already know about the show. Those activities are doing nothing to gain new listeners. We brainstormed ideas to get in front of new listeners. I suggested they partner with complimentary services in the real estate industry to market the show. They could get mortgage lenders, closing agents and staging consultants to tell their clients about the show. If these agents could promote the podcast to their audiences, the podcast could make mention of the services. Everybody wins. The key to growing your audience is finding new potential listeners in big groups. Find partners who are already talking to your target listener. This is why developing your ideal target listener is so important. When you know what your listener is all about, you can determine who is already speaking into their lives. Partner and grow. You can use networking to grow your show if you use it in the right way. BASILE LEMBA Today, we talk to Basile Lemba. He teaches people how to network properly. Basile was born in Cameroon in West Africa. He moved to France, then Florida. He now lives in Virginia. Each time he moved, Basile was forced to rebuild his connections and network. As he attended various events, he realized most people lacked the specific know-how to properly connect with each other. That is how he founded BL Networking. Over the past 14 years, Basile has been teaching people how to properly network with each other to get results and grow their business. We are lucky to have Basile here today to share some tips that will help us grow our podcast audience and connect with powerful partners. Basile Lemba has over 30 years of experience in Networking. He is the creator of "PROFITABLE NETWORKING BLUEPRINT" and the Founder of the NETWORKING INSTITUTE. He has helped over 30,000 businesses acquire the right clients and dramatically increase their revenues. These companies range from "Mom and Pop" to MICROSOFT. He has an upcoming book on Networking titled: "Everything you think you know about Networking is Wrong!" Find Basile's program at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/network. Genetic tests carried out by British scientists have revealed that many of the Lemba tribesmen in southern Africa have Jewish origins, according to a report by the BBC. The Lemba, a tribe of 70,000 to 80,000 members who live in central Zimbabwe and northern South Africa, have customs which are similar to Jewish ones: Lemba refrain from eating pork or other foods forbidden by the Torah, or forbidden combinations of permitted foods, wear yarmulke-like skull caps, conduct ritual animal slaughter, have a holy day once a week, and even put a Star of David on their gravestones. According to their oral tradition, the Lemba are descended from seven Jewish men who left Israel 2,500 years ago and married African women, according to the BBC. Since late 2017, after several Simply The Story instructors completed a training, Bible storytelling has permeated the Lemba congregation in Zimbabwe and reached into fringe sects. People are being impacted and an Oral Bible School has been planted. Today’s show: Integrating STS Storytelling Community Impact STS Oral Bible School Nestled away in the remote areas of Zimbabwe, lives the Lemba people. Their blood lineage, as well as their history, traces back to Israel around the time of their return from the Babylonian exile. After settling in Yemen for centuries with their foreign wives, the Lemba people suffered persecution when Islam arose. The people then crossed the Red Sea and into the horn of Africa and finally settling in Zimbabwe, Mozamique and other places. Their Jewish roots, religious practices, and holy ceremonies stem from the Scriptures. Some of the Lemba people are the Messianic believers who have placed their trust in Jesus, or Yeshua, as the promised Savior. Hear the story of what God is doing in their midst from Bill Bjoraker, a professor in Jewish history and Messianic studies, as he interviews Godwill and Rumbi. Links ... [paypal-donation] We're continuing our series on DNA & Book of Mormon. How to Lemba Tribe & Vikings DNA relate to the Book or Mormon? If you've listened to my interviews on the Book of Mormon, I've asked a few people, like Jim Vun Cannon and David Rosenvall about the Lemba Tribe in Africa. They're a tribe that has Middle Eastern DNA, unlike Native Americans who don't. Dr. Ugo Perego gives a good introduction into the Lemba Tribe, and why similar DNA is or is not found in America. Lemba Tribe from Africa Ugo: The Lemba Tribe is an African tribe. Traditionally they claim to have Jewish ancestry but physically they are African. They did this DNA study, this was done several years ago, and actually things have changed a little bit since then. The original thing that made a huge impact that people still remember is the fact that Jewish researchers identified a marker among Jewish families called the Cohen haplotype. Cohen is the priestly class. It's a surname which is linked back in time of the Levi or Aaron, brother of Moses, and that would be the priestly class that was found among the different Israelite tribes. The first research says we identified these markers. It's very dominant among the Cohen families which traditionally was the priestly family. They have the marker. The other families don't have it as much as they do. Do all the Cohen people have the marker? No. Do people that are not Cohen have the marker? Yes, but the majority of the Cohens has it, so they are linking to them. It's never 100%, it's never all or none. They have it. We link it to Jewish families, we link it to the priestly class. Now the Lemba Tribe says we are part of the Jewish family too. They found the Cohen haplotype among them as well, so you think genetically it makes more sense. GT: Right. The story that I remember, it seemed to me, and correct me if I'm wrong. It seemed to me they kind of had a similar story as Book of Mormon people. They both left Jerusalem about the same time. Ugo: Yes. GT: 600 B.C. In the case of the Lemba tribe, they travelled through and ended up in southern Africa, married with the local population, and they have this… Ugo interrupts: this marker. That's the simple story. There are other things that could happen. One of them is that Jews accept converts. You are not biologically a Jew only because you are …{pauses} GT: born Jew. Ugo: born Jew. They accept converts. What I think is that most of these Lemba thing could also be a result of a sort of a mixture, some sort of founder effect, but not much as a migration as much as they thought, maybe like a few people that came and had an interaction and then there was maybe this gene that spread. Another thing that they discovered, this is today's knowledge. This marker is found among all of the Middle Eastern population, not just Jews. It pre-dates Aaron's time. Arabs have it. Muslims have it. It matches other types of markers. It is not Jewish-specific or Jerusalem-specific marker. It's a lot more spread and common than we think it is. It's good. They did a study on a Jewish population. They did a study on another population, and they did find something in common between them. Viking versus Columbus DNA We'll also talk a little bit about Viking DNA. Can that be distinguished from Columbus DNA? Ugo: Do you think we can determine DNA from 1800 versus DNA from 1000 A.D. from Europe found in America? GT: I would think so. Ugo: The answer is no. Do you know the Vikings were in Greenland from 1000-1400 A.D., 400 years? We have written documentation that they were here, the Icelandic woman actually kept their record of their voyages.[1] We have villages, remains of Viking villages in Greenland that around 1400, they just left. They just left. We also have DNA from Native Americans in Iceland, which pre-dates Christopher Columbus, that's been there.

David Trobisch replies. More info on the Lemba and the Falasha. If John the Baptist is held in such high esteem by Christians today, why assume ancient Christians would have found his baptism of Jesus an embarrassment? I noticed that your translation of John 1:1 reads 'was a God'. Would you please offer an apologia of your alleged 'frightful mistranslation'? Is there anything outside the Bible to indicate the existence of some sort of Paul, or should we be as agnostic about his existence as about everything else reported in the New Testament? Is the story of Cain and Abel a justification for aggression by the sheep-herding writers against their farming neighbors?

Eighth in the series. In prophetic word Judah and Israel are inseparable. At one time, for convenience, I tried to separate the Hebrew scriptures referring to the return of Judah from those referring to Israel, (i.e. the 'ten tribes'). It proved to be impossible! Can we identify any of the ten tribes today? Do they have any connection to Israel?
