Today I'm joined by a fellow student from my Harvard days, Susan Lieu – a management consultant turned author, playwright, and performer. She joins us to explore how unhealed intergenerational trauma shapes how we lead, the choices we make in our careers, and our ability to live a life that's authentic to our values instead of focussed on survival and pleasing our families. We have a deeply vulnerable, soul-elevating conversation about how hard it is to go against the grain and follow your calling into the life that you were truly created for, even if it upsets people you love. Susan and I also discuss her critically acclaimed memoir, “The Manicurist's Daughter,” and the wisdom she's gained from writing about how her mother's death during a tummy tuck changed her life and her family forever. Topics discussed:Intergenerational trauma, the cost of silence and protecting our families secretsOvercoming the fear of pivoting careers from corporate to the arts as an A-type high-achieving financially-driven Harvard graduateHow hard it is to find enoughness in your leadership and career journey, and as a parentHow Susan brought more fulfilment into her career by discovering her top 3 valuesThe role our careers play in our personal growth stories and the unfolding of our soul's highest purpose Order Susan's book “The Manicurist's Daughter , follow her on LinkedIn and Instagram or visit her website. Many of us have been raised to believe that hard work, focus, practicality and responsibility are the keys to success. As a society we most celebrate the rags to riches stories that involve grit, resilience and hustle. But what often goes undiscussed is that these great inventors and business mavericks were often following their hearts – or the calls of their soul. The grit etc was in response to the scale of desire that thrummed within them for something different, more, exciting, wondrous, impossible, but oh so true to their soul's purpose and heart's desire. As leaders we so often struggle to harness the incredible power of our hearts' desires in favour of ruling ourselves with our heads and following the proven method. The wild unknown path terrifies us, and thus its gift of newness, fulfilment, expansion and purpose alignment is lost to us. How do we learn to listen to, trust and follow our hearts in our career pathways and leadership approach and trust that we will be successful?Topics discussed:What is lost to us when we rule with our heads over our heartsOur reptilian brain's need for security and guaranteed returns and why it leads us down the beaten path and away from our hopes and desires How to heal your relationship with desire, the unknown, your sense of duty and fear of loss to let your desires bring you successMy story of bringing strategy vs desire, mind vs heart, duty vs passion into harmony so that they work together for my highest good Themes: Mindset mastery; owning your desires, heart-centred leadership, mind vs heart-based decision-making, trusting the unknown, self-trust, career expansion --Sign up for the mailing list to hear when leadership support circles launch and get early access discounts to upcoming eventsBook a free 1x1 coaching discovery call or reach out for retreats, workshop facilitation, or 1x1 and group leadership coaching for your companyFind me on LinkedIn and Instagram
Change is hard – even when it's good for us. We often unconsciously resist it for months until it uses suffering to force our hand. Why do we resist it so much and what can we do to help ourselves to better accept the writing on the wall so that we can be decisive, accept a new paradigm, and return to being in flow and, ultimately, on the path of success and abundance?Today I use a live example from my own leadership and business journey that has challenged me to let go of the more popular and conventionally accepted approach to leadership growth that has brought me so much success to date and embrace my evolution into a more holistic mind-body-heart-soul approach that departs from convention but is more true to me. I struggled to accept how I was changing despite seeing the measurable client impact like new jobs, promotions, successful business launches.I hope my experience inspires you take the leap past anything stale in your career that it's time to let go of.Topics discussed:The difficult journey of accepting that change was here and why our minds resist it so muchHow I helped my mind to accept this change and how you can do the same for yoursThe key mindset shift that I needed to make to accept this change and how you can explore what your limiting belief could beUsing your body's wisdom to show you where you're blockedThe imperative of operating from a regulated nervous system to help you handle the psychological stress of change Themes: Mindset shift, career transitions, change, mind-body connection, leadership growth --Sign up for the mailing list to hear when leadership support circles launch and get early access discounts to upcoming eventsBook a free 1x1 coaching discovery call or reach out for retreats, workshop facilitation, or 1x1 and group leadership coaching for your companyFind me on LinkedIn and InstagramSponsor an episode
How do you think about the vision for your career in an ever changing world? When you are constantly evolving, conditions are ever changing and your ability to take action on your goals is sometimes compromised by the limitations of circumstances in our lives, how often do you step back to reassess? Is your true expansive vision or your “rogue” limited vision (e.g., insecurity, fear, lack) running your career? If you have a vision for your career, do you also have a vision for your leadership style and experience?Do you even have a vision? Maybe you've just had your head down trying to learn, achieve financial security, make a name for yourself, get a good review, not lose your job, get promoted. But now that you're feeling more secure and confident, you realise you haven't had an explicit vision or purpose. Today I explore the nuances and complexities with creating and sustaining an empowering but adaptable vision that can motivate you but grow and change with you as you evolve and mature in your career and leadership journey.Topics discussed:I wonder what my late father's vision was and how it needed to change from “revolutionary” to “nation builder” when Zimbabwe achieved independence while he was working abroadI invite you to think about whether your conscious vision or your rogue vision is running your life based on whether the direction you've been going in alights with what you actually want (a big one!)I explore the various changes and setbacks I've faced as I lived out my career and tested the feasibility, desirability, and applicability of my career vision until I finally found one that stuck (for now)I explore the importance of making your vision spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically coherent so that it's humane, truly aligned with your purpose, and holistically meaningful --Sign up for the mailing list to hear when leadership support circles launch and get early access discounts to upcoming eventsBook a free 1x1 coaching discovery call or reach out for retreats, workshop facilitation, or 1x1 and group leadership coaching for your companyFind me on LinkedIn and Instagram

Today's episode is close to my heart because last year I was in a career winter and it would have helped so much to have realised it sooner so that I could have managed my expectations and leaned into trust. One of the bravest things that we can do as leaders is trust the season we're in to bring us what we need instead of trying to force it to bring us what we want. Just as Earth moves in seasons and cycles, our careers go through times of expansion and new beginnings (Spring), success and attainment (Summer), change and slow down (Autumn), integration and rest (Winter). When we move with our seasons, we understand what life is asking of us and can show up for what is needed with intention, resourcefulness, the right mindset and security that we are in the right place and the right time, no matter what our circumstances may suggest. In this episode I share * A detailed deep dive into each career season and its impact on your energy levels, opportunity generation, internal vs external orientation, pace of career progress and more * My approach to understanding the season you're in * Determining what your season means for how you invest your time and energy and calibrate your expectations * How to combine career seasons with annual themes (listen to Part 1 in Episode 41) to set the right goals for your leadership and career that will actually make you successful in the long term * Using the themes of your season to review your year in an empowering way that keeps your self-confidence intact - especially if you're in a career Winter Themes: Leadership, goal-setting, career vision, seasonal planning, annual planning, grounded mindset, self-leadership -- Join me in the Abundant Leaders Circle for “Starting strong: Setting your 2025 career goals”, an online annual planning workshop for high-performance leaders on Saturday 25 January 2025. Together we will avoid the overwhelm and overambition that sets us up for disappointment by setting inspiring but achievable practical goals for our year that align with our vision, honour the limitations of our demanding careers and put the right mindset and enabling support in place to help us to succeed. Join me as we explore a different way to set annual goals. Last year I decided to plan my year based primarily on 4 themes instead of a list of goals and it transformed my growth. I was able to consistently show up to the theme more than I had ever been able to show up in the past for a long list of daily actions. It also brought me more balance to how I managed my energy during the year. Instead of consistently pressing for achievement and change, I left space for reflection on the theme, learning about its wisdom, taking actions big and small, and leaving capacity for things to change. Topics discussed: * A practical way to use themes instead of goals in your annual planning for your leadership and career aspirations * A detailed understanding of 9 core universal themes that govern the human experience * Accepting the shadow that comes with the light of each theme * Understanding your hero's journey across your career and how to figure out where you are in your story arc so you can work with vs. against its energy * Identifying which theme resonates for you in 2025 and how to work with it this year -- Join me in the Abundant Leaders Circle for “Starting strong: Setting your 2025 career goals”, an online annual planning workshop for high-performance leaders on Saturday 25 January 2025. Tamara Makoni is the Founder & CEO of Kazuri Consulting. She is an inclusion & culture advisor, facilitator and speaker who helps organisations use diversity, equity and inclusion to empower diverse teams and achieve strategic objectives. Today we explore how we can be more inclusive as leaders by unpacking our pasts and confronting our unconscious biases. As black leaders, we think a lot about whether or not we're being included, understood and empowered to thrive but don't always see how we aren't including others who may have different economic backgrounds, sexual orientations, ethnicity, etc. We unpack why that is, our unconscious biases and what we need to do differently to bring about holistic inclusion on our teams. Topics discussed: * DEI and intersectionality * Our personal stories about growing up black but different, including my own unconscious biases about Tamara! * How colonisation, apartheid and slavery created mindsets of lack and competition for limited roles * How black and African culture creates fierce in-group and out-group mentalities that make it difficult for outsides to fit in * The mindset shift that will empower us to be more self-aware and inclusive * Advice for how to better support the underrepresented members of our teams Find Tamara on Kazuri Consulting, LinkedIn, YouTube and read her article on DEI and intersectionality -- Book a free 1x1 coaching discovery call or reach out for speaking, leadership development or culture and talent consulting for your company Clarify what you want for your career and how you want to lead with the Discover What Gives You Meaning online workshop Accelerate your career advancement with the Get Promoted online course Find me on LinkedIn and Instagram Sign up to receive my leadership letter, get discounts and early access to events Sponsor an episode
It's Women's Month in South Africa and this episode is for the ladies! My fellow female leaders, it is time to heal our relationship with power so that we can rise up and have the influence we are here to have. In my journey as a leader, I have struggled to own my voice, take up space, stand in the spotlight with all eyes on me, and go against the grain. I've asked for permission instead of taking what is mine. And, heartbreakingly, I have coached so many C-suite women who struggle with the same thing. Imposter syndrome, low confidence and shrinking back is not our portion in life. It is our divine right to lead, to influence, and to want and have power without being shamed, judged or punished for it. In today's episode, I take us on a journey that can help us heal our relationship with power so that we can have the leadership impact and experience the freedom that we were created for. Topics discussed: * How society sets women up to distrust our own power and judges us for wanting it * What healthy power looks like and how vital it is to life * Overcoming our unhelpful beliefs and stories about being a woman with power * My story as a recovering permission-seeking, over-functioning people pleaser * A few reflection questions that can help step into more of your power -- Book a free 1x1 coaching discovery call or reach out for speaking, leadership development or culture and talent consulting for your company Clarify what you want for your career and how you want to lead with the Discover What Gives You Meaning online workshop Accelerate your career advancement with the Get Promoted online course Find me on LinkedIn and Instagram Sign up to receive my leadership letter, get discounts and early access to events Sponsor an episode

We all want to feel great in our careers. We want influence, opportunities, confidence, satisfaction, a sense of achievement, purpose. We want abundance. But it can feel hard to really grasp. What does abundance mean? Is it even possible in a world that seems to have finite resources? Fear shows up in so many ways in our leadership journeys - as imposter syndrome, fear of taking on a meatier role, fear of negotiating the right compensation package, fear of having difficult conversations, fear of taking the risk to dive into a new market or to recall a product that is no longer working, on and on. Traditional corporate culture, work culture and performance culture is not working for us anymore. It's being disrupted by our growth – our desire for more freedom, authenticity, alignment, meaning, support and ease in our lived experience. If you're growing in any of these ways, you're playing a vital role as a trail-blazing paradigm-shifter on the behalf of humanity. Your role is important, the work you are doing on yourself will reap benefits if you keep pressing in to the difficult but brave work of challenging the status quo with your boundaries, inclusivity, self-awareness and authenticity. It may ruffle feathers, but it's worth it. I celebrate you. We need you. Alinafe is back for the third installment of the Real Talk series. Alinafe Thupa is a management consultant and my dear friend. Today we discuss the problem with believing that leaders should have all the answers. We've found in our own experiences that the best leaders create space for their teams to explore ideas, problem-solve together, resourcefully gather insights from experts and, effectively, create a container in which the answer can be found. However, when we were new managers, we fell into the trap of thinking that we needed to know everything and have an answer to every question – which limited our effectiveness. How do you avoid falling into the same trap? Topics discussed: * The leaders that have made us feel most safe and the environments they created for us * What the real role of the leader is * The insecurities we had to overcome so that we could become more expansive leaders * What to do if your superpower is in asking the right question vs. giving the perfect answer? * How we have to learn to market ourselves so that we're recognised for our leadership skills vs. content knowledge Learn more about Alinafe and follow her on Instagram @fashion_kill_her The Real Talk series is a regular segment where I'm chatting casually with my friends about our on the ground career and leadership experiences. I have spent my life searching for safety and security. I've looked for it in financial security, the approval of others, the prestige of my role, the value of my skillset, my ability to perform and deliver, on and on. Many of my clients have felt the same and it's led all of us nowhere because the trick to safety, acceptance and belonging is that it lives within us. We will never find it in anything external to us, but it requires us to be brave enough to go within, to back ourselves, and to never be the ones who let us go. This sounds like a personal topic but it's actually leadership topic because we have all seen the havoc that can be wreaked by insecure leaders and we just cannot afford to be them. Topics discussed: * What is safety and why are we so desperate for it? * What happens to our lives and leadership when we put our safety in external sources * The journey of going within – it all starts with accepting ourselves * The abundance that becomes available to us when we become our source of safety. -- **NEW** Announcing the launch of Lead Authentically – a leadership growth journey that will help you to courageously explore and accept who you are at your core and deliberately use your uniqueness as your competitive advantage and source of strength in your leadership. -- Book a free 1x1 coaching discovery call or reach out for leadership development for your company Accelerate your career advancement with the Get Promoted online course Find me on LinkedIn and Instagram Sign up to receive my leadership letter Sponsor an episode --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/abundantleaderswithtenji/message
In the second Real Talk episode, I'm joined by my girls Alison Cohen and Rehema Kutua. We're best friends from college with a standing monthly date to coach each other on our businesses and careers. It's lonely at the top and entrepreneurs and leaders feel it significantly. Fewer people check in on you, offer you honest developmental feedback, invite you to informally socialise at work or feel comfortable creating space for you to be vulnerable. Alison, Rehema and I wanted to avoid this so we created a structure that could hold us in safety where we could ask for help, share our struggles and support each other in a challenging, lonely role. Welcome to our career coaching circle. I hope you feel inspired to create one of your own. Topics discussed: * Why Rehema and Alison said YES to starting our coaching circle * What we've each gotten out of it * How the circle has helped us grow and heal in unexpected ways * What's helped our support group to be successful * Advice for how you can start your own Learn more about Alison, Rehema and ConnectWellEd The Real Talk series is a regular segment where I'm chatting casually with my friends about our on the ground career and leadership experiences. Bringing our full selves to work and leveraging our uniqueness as a source of differentiation and competitive advantage is a game-changer for driving our performance, impact, and resonance as leaders. However, we aren't always in spaces where we are able to fully be ourselves or our unique approach and way of leading isn't celebrated. What then? How do we determine if we're in the right company, role set-up, and team/relationship dynamic that supports us to thrive as our best selves? If we aren't well enabled, what can we do about it? And if it's time to move on, how do we avoid ending up in the same situation again? Topics discussed: * Four areas to look at to determine whether your company or role is the right place and set up for you * A few questions to ask yourself to determine whether to stay or go * How to exercise your agency to co-create an enabling environment without pulling the plug * You need to believe it's possible to thrive, with a bit of hard work, in order to change your experience at work -- **NEW** Announcing the launch of Lead Authentically – a leadership growth journey that will help you to courageously explore and accept who you are at your core and deliberately use your uniqueness as your competitive advantage and source of strength in your leadership. We've been raised to believe that the harder we work, the more successful we'll be, the more money we'll make, the faster we'll rise up the ranks – the more valuable we are. But is that still true? We're squarely in the era of the knowledge and experiences economy, which means value is created not in terms of widgets produced but something more intangible. The game has changed and it's inviting leaders to let go of a hustle productivity mentality, and start focusing on meaningful outcomes, experiences and value created. But neither of our careers have looked anything like this. We've had to break free from our parents' expectations and fears to chart new paths for ourselves. We're trusting our own decisions and following our true norths to create careers we're both proud of and can sustain. Topics discussed: * What our non-linear paths have looked like - career pivots, intrapreneurship, entrepreneurship and portfolio careers * Our parents' legacy and the curse of colonisation and Apartheid * How we've pivoted into new roles, sectors and functions successfully * Finding our golden thread to build continuity in our stories * What we've had to believe about safety in order to face our fears of changing jobs * The litmus test we use to test if it's time for a change Learn more about Alinafe and follow her on Instagram @fashion_kill_her The Real Talk series is a regular segment where I'm chatting casually with my friends about our on the ground career and leadership experiences. We've spoken about the shadow of being too resilient (Episode 9) but what happens when we leave too soon? We can miss out on a chance to grow, to exercise our agency, rally support around us, and renew stagnant situations if we pull the plug too early. Resilience is a virtue – in its highest expression it makes us adaptable, resourceful, scrappy and results-focussed. Feminine energy has a bad rep. So much of corporate culture and the patriarchy tell women and men that displaying “feminine” traits is soft. Yet these are the very traits that help us to nurture strong talent, collaborate, adapt to shifting trends, take risks, co-create answers that are more fit-for-purpose, and many more critical leadership skills. When we're in more junior roles, our value comes from our ability to deliver operationally i.e., technical execution and sharing highly specific content knowledge. But once we become senior managers and leaders, our value comes from our ability to enable value creation against the company's strategic goals – this requires a different type of skill. It's helpful to redefine what “expertise” means so that we upgrade our understanding of our own expertise and can bring it to bear so that we don't feel like imposters, undersell ourselves, or miss out on great opportunities.
