On this episode of Tame the Mobile Beast, host Tom Butta dives deep into the challenges of breaking down business silos and fostering creativity with Nick Law, Creative Chairperson at Accenture Song. Throughout their conversation, Nick and Tom explore the importance of aligning what matters to customers with what drives profitability for the business. Nick argues that “ You're not making business decisions separate from what's good for the customer, and you're also not making customer decisions that aren't gonna be good for business.”Together, they emphasize that a unified approach not only fosters a more cohesive customer experiencem, but also strengthens the organization as a whole. Nick points out that while operating in silos is a natural step of scaling your organization, it can create costly inefficiencies and jeapordizies a collaboration that is rooted in shared vision and principles. Drawing on real-world examples from his own career, Nick reflects on how businesses can adapt to technological advancements without sacrificing empathy and creativity. Ultimately, he urges organizations to remember that technology should enhance, not replace, the nuanced human judgment that's essential for delivering exceptional customer experiences.—Guest Quote" The hardest thing is to reverse engineer everything from your customer. Now, it doesn't mean by the way that we surrender to everything the customer wants, but don't run a business. We're always a business. But what you need to align is what's relevant for the customer with what's gonna make you money. There's an overlap there. It's not a silo. You're not making business decisions separate from what's good for the customer, and you're also not making customer decisions that aren't gonna be good for business. So that's the trick.” – Nick Law—Time Stamps 00:53 Introducing Nick Law and the Beast of the Week01:17 Understanding business silos02:56 The importance of collaboration in creativity06:45 Designing effective collaborations12:46 The role of vision in breaking down silos18:50 Principles vs. practices in creative work23:13 Leadership and vision in organizations26:14 Customer-centric business strategies29:17 Balancing systematic and empathetic thinking38:45 The future of creativity and AI44:59 Rapid Fire Questions—LinksConnect with Nick Law on LinkedInCheck out Accenture SongConnect with Tom Butta on LinkedInCheck out the Airship Website
A few seasons back I realized that to truly tell the story of the business of craft beer, we needed input from other countries. So I reached out to Canadian, Australian, Norwegian, UK and South African breweries. Some of those interviews have already been released. But the very first international guest I tried to get was Nick Law. He not only had a beer brand but he'd started a podcast and a consulting company so I knew he brought a perspective we needed to hear from. And he and his businesses are in the UK. Of course, with all that going on, Nick was quite busy. So he and I played email and phone tag for years, which I won when we finally connected at the end of 2023. We finally got to this interview in early 2024. Like most of these stories, I go in thinking I know something about the brewery and the guest, only to come out on the other side of two intimate hours blown away with everything I didn't know. And couldn't have guessed. And with that, Damn Audience, I present you with Nick Law and the story of Emmanuales and Hop Forward. I hope it gives you a little more insight into how NOT To Start A Damn Brewery. In any country. Edited highlights of our full length conversation. Are you leading, following or getting out of the way? This episode is the first in a series of conversations that I'm having in partnership with the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. For the next five weeks leading up to Cannes, we're going to focus our study of leadership through a single lens. The impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Creative Industries. Are we moving fast enough? Are we going far enough? Is this an opportunity to fundamentally redesign the creative industries, or should we adjust and iterate, slowly and carefully? Do we follow the puck, or skate to where it's going? There are opportunities and risks around every corner. We start with a conversation with Nick Law, who is Creative Chairperson at Accenture Song. Nick has seen the creative industries from an array of extraordinary perspectives. He was Vice Chairman, Global Chief Creative Officer at R/GA, he served as Chief Creative Officer at Publicis Groupe, and was Vice President of Marcom Integration at Apple, where he co-led the global design and marketing group. On his Cannes speaker profile, Nick says that he believes all technology needs creativity to make it human, and all creativity needs technology to make it real. At the end of the series, I'll offer some thoughts on what we've heard and learned, and where we might go from here. It promises to be an eye opening and thought provoking journey. Thanks for joining us.

A.I.-enabled creative technology is evolving at an astonishing speed and becoming increasingly accessible to all. Chatbots, image processors and music generators are changing the way humans create, but they are also raising concerns around ethics, authorship and intellectual property. As a result, companies must stay ahead of this trend to avoid missing out on a wave of innovation. In this episode, we'll learn how two A.I.-based companies have reimagined music and design. We'll also hear from an Accenture thought leader on how A.I. can enable new ways of working for teams. This episode features Oleg Stavitsky, C.E.O. and Co-Founder of Endel; Nick Law, Global Lead for Design and Creative Tech at Accenture Song; and Joseph Reisinger, C.E.O. and Co-Founder of Facet.
Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
In this episode of the Hop Forward podcast, hosts Nick Law and Sean Robertson delve into the controversial world of marketing transparency in the beer industry. They begin by discussing BrewDog's recent controversy over their decision to partner with ABInBev to brew their flagship brands in China. The conversation then turns to the differences between a brand like Madri vs Guinness and how the latter still feels authentic and embraced by all craft beer drinkers, despite also being owned by a global beverage company.Throughout the episode, Nick and Sean emphasize the importance of transparency in marketing and urge breweries to be honest about their values and practices. As ever, the episode provides thought-provoking insights into the complex intersection of beer, marketing, and ethics, while Nick tries not to offend the French.Follow Nick:hopforward.beer | LinkedIn | Twitter | InstagramFollow Sean:LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram

Edited highlights of our full conversation. Here's a question. How do you find the right people? This week's guest is Nick Law. He's the Global Lead for Design and Creative Tech at Accenture Song. Nick has had a storied career. Global Chief Creative Officer at R/GA. Chief Creative Officer of Publicis Groupe. VP, Marcom Integration at Apple before joining Accenture Song in early 2022. He has led and unlocked creativity across thousands of people. He's seen what works. And what doesn't. In my experience, the very best leaders understand three things. Their business, their people and themselves. But not in that order. Most leaders prioritize their understanding of the business. After all, it's the reference point that most people use when measuring the success or otherwise of an individual leader. Leaders rightly worry about the vision, the strategy, the execution and the performance of the organization, pouring themselves into KPIs and P&Ls. But getting those numbers to really sing is the consequences of two things. How well you understand your people. And how well you understand yourself. The creative thinking and innovation that every modern business depends on is amplified a thousand fold when its people trust and believe in the leaders of that business. Better visions, better strategies, better systems will move the needle a bit by themselves. But only a bit. And nothing like as far as when your people believe in you. And what drives that belief. Your courage, your confidence, your consistency. And your humanity. And all of those depend on how well you understand yourself. So if you're struggling to find the right people, start by finding yourself and deciding what really matters to you. And then say it out loud so that your people can find you.

This week, Nick takes a trip over the Pennines to Manchester to catch up with owner of Windsor based bottle shop and taproom and winner of the SIBA Best Independent Craft Beer Retailer, A Hoppy Place.Recorded live on location at Alphabet Brewery, with a brief stop off at Track Brewing Co for a pint of Sonoma and to admire their floor, Nick and Dave discuss Inbetweenland, an article written by Dave to highlight why and how breweries need to support their local independent bottle shops due to the rise of breweries selling direct to consumers, how the pandemic is still affecting businesses like his and how breweries and bottle shops can work together more harmoniously.Over a couple of fantastic beers from Alphabet Brewery, as in any conversation down the pub, our discussion turned to the hot topic of the day: social media and sharing opinions online about craft beer, life and everything in between. This episode, recorded on location Saturday 9th October 2021, touches upon themes of respectfully considering others opinions and mediating conversations, even when we don't agree with what is being said.It seems like a timely topic given some of the online chat and debate that has been taking place recently surrounding MBCC (though this was recorded prior to the activity taking place this week). To find out more about A Hoppy Place and to read Dave's thoughts on all manner of things, check out their website https://ahoppyplace.co.uk/THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY CRISP MALTSince 1870, Crisp Malt has been producing the finest malt at Great Ryburgh in Norfolk. On the Hop Forward Podcast this week, two designers involved in the craft beer space - Marcus Ohanesian (Perfect Evolution) and podcast host Nick Law (Hop Forward) discuss branding from a designer's perspective. How has beer branding changed over time? How does a designer approach a branding project? What does a brewer need to do to get their product to stand out on a shelf or a bar? And what even is branding? Is it just the design on a can or a flashy logo? These are some of the questions we ask as we talk about how branding can be make or break for your beer business. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
Pubs have long been a staple part of society, particularly in these parts in the world, and has undergone countless changes over the centuries. However, even in war time - where pubs were forced to operate on restricted hours to both keep the streets dark during blackouts or by keeping workers sober and hangover free, there was still opportunity to frequent the local. Fast Forward to the 21st century and the world is fighting an altogether different kind of war. Pubs and hospitality have no doubt been the fall-guy during the coronavirus pandemic. There have been stats from the office for national statistics that show that hospitality businesses have seen fewer transmission rates than schools and workplaces. But the sad fact is that wherever people gather indoors there is the potential to pick up and pass on this coronavirus that could lead to someone’s untimely death. There are no easy answers here. And, without government intervention that is fair to everyone - not just to certain chains that offer ‘substantial meals’ to accompany a pint - many of our humble pubs will simply remain boarded up when restrictions are gradually eased. CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale - have been one of the many groups increasingly lobbying the government for further support to the industry. Their approach, as you’ll hear, isn’t gunho, firing through the air with two guns shouting, ‘Ahhh!!!’. It’s measured, well-thought through, nuanced and approached with care and diligence… not qualities that often shine through these days over social media where eye space is usually reserved for who can shout the loudest and angriest. In this conversation with Nick Boley, CAMRA’s Campaigns Director, we discuss how pubs need ongoing support to weather this storm and try to unpick some of the long term prognosis for pubs post pandemic, as well as looking at how people will feel about attending mass gatherings such as the GBBF. There’s a lot to be said on the subject... and I could certainly talk for hours on end about this topic alone. I’m hoping to be able to do just that with some of you down the local pub as soon as their open, a thick pint of scrumptious cask ale in hand sat in a warm breezy beer garden. Chris Hodgetts, founder of Levithan Brewing, worked in management consultancy for almost 20 years, often spending large portions of time away from home. As an avid beer lover, it was only after being diagnosed with cancer in 2017 that Chris decided to do something that would enable him to be at home with his family each night - brewing. Although Chris was given the all clear, in June 2018 he was struck with the bad news that his illness had returned. Still determined to turn his hand to running a commercial brewery around 5 months of successful treatment, Chris pushed on to make his dream a reality, buying a 5BBL brewhouse. Chris is unapologetic in his passion for music and beer. The look and feel of the labels blurs the lines between craft beer and vinyl artwork. In our discussion, we talk about everything from setting the brewery up, the challenges of scaling up from homebrew to commercial sized kit, Chris’s season of ill-health and take a deep dive into the world of music and beer, all to the soundtrack of trying and chatting about Chris’s beers. This week on the Hop Forward Podcast we are talking all about beer and music with Sam McGregor from Signature Brew. Like many musicians, founders and cousins Sam and Tom left the touring circuit back in 2011 to set up Signature Brew with the same DIY spirit that most artists and musicians adopt to creating and releasing their records. Signature Brew channels the spirit and energy of live music into a brewery that stands for craftsmanship, artistry and passion, and has won us praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Kerrang!, NME and MTV as well as the wider UK beer press, the Morning Advertiser, The Independent and Channel 4's Sunday Brunch. Whereas most breweries collaborate with other breweries, Signature Brew have teamed up with musicians including Mogwai, Alt-J, Slaves, Drs and Dynamite, and - most recently - The Darkness. Signature Brew are on a mission to bring great beer to music venues by promoting live music to the accompaniment of great beer. Hop Forward Podcast Exclusive... And this week we all crack open the same beer despite the miles between us - a real classic too: Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Sean possibly enjoyed it in 1952 when it was first brewed while James is drinking it for the first time (which is a bit criminal, really). We're joined by fellow podcaster Nick Law (check out http://hopforward.beer/ (http://hopforward.beer/) ) to hear how he's getting on during lockdown. Stay safe, and safe home.
