The injury-ravaged Seattle Sounders couldn't quite get on track in Matchday 5 as they played a snoozer in Saturday's scoreless draw vs. Nico Lodeiro and the Houston Dynamo.
A lot to recap on today's episode of Side x Side with Zak and Brad, starting (of course) with the Tim Melia / Cristian Roldan incident from the weekend. Our hosts briefly recap the loss at LAFC, then answer some fan questions regarding the return of Jordan Morris, Nico Lodeiro and Raul Ruidiaz. Then, a quick game of Over/Under presented by Emerald Queen Casino and our plans for Halloween this year.
Seattle Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about the Leagues Cup Final tomorrow against Club Leon in Las Vegas, the challenges and pedigree of the new MLS tournament, updates on the health of Nicolas Lodeiro and Jordan Morris, and Stefan Frei's return to the starting lineup recently.
Jackson Felts, Pete Fewing and Danny Jackson recap a 1-0 Sounders loss on the road at Real Salt Lake and some bad injury news on Nico Lodeiro.

We're joined this week by Niko Moreno (@ELROLONW on Twitter) editor at Pulso Sports Network and Sounder at Heart contributor. Niko's connections to the scouting side of the soccer landscape as well as his relationships with players from all over the league lend an interesting perspective to the current off season of Major League Soccer. We start off by talking about the move of Sporting Director and VP of Soccer Chris Henderson to Inter Miami where he will take over a similar role for the second year expansion side. The Sounders will have a big hole to fill in their scouting department and we discuss the successes that Henderson had with player acquisitions over the years and who will be filling the void left by Henderson's departure for the Sounders. Will there be a gap in talent coming to the Sounders as players divert to Miami? We speculate a bit on what the future holds. But will we even have a MLS season this year? Thursday night saw the 30 day negotiating window set by the league expire after invoking the force majeure clause that was put into the CBA last summer before play returned last July. MLSPA sent their own offer to league that was rejected despite the concessions that players presented. The league has since extended the bargaining window by another week and has threatened a lock out of players if no agreement is reached. Despite the uncertainty, the Sounders have re-signed a couple of familiar faces from last season in Jimmy Medranda and Stef Cleveland. Federal Way native Kelyn Rowe was also announced as a new signing by the team, joining the Sounders as a free agent from the New England Revolution. How will these players affect the formations that the Sounders roll out in 2021? Are we going to see a return to a 4-4-2 or even a 3-5-2? Niko Moreno was able to get a candid interview with Nico Lodeiro, current captain and midfielder for the Sounders. The two discussed Lodeiro's concerns about the state of the Sounders, Chris Henderson's department, Jordin Morris' move to the English Championship where he joined Swansea, and what 2021 looks like for the Sounders without the young winger. The conversation can be found on Sounder At Heart here: https://www.sounderatheart.com/2021/2/1/22259777/nicolas-lodeiro-reflects-on-jordan-morris-departure. Episode 118 – The Referee’s A Sounder! We are back for yet another September episode of Defenders of the Banc, and it’s another tough result for LAFC. LAFC makes their way up to the Emerald City to take on the defending champs, and, unbeknownst to them, the referee, as well. It’s a 3-0 loss to the champs, and it’s Episode 118 of Defenders of the Banc. LAFC started out well, and it was punch/counterpunch for the first 25 minutes or so. Solid chances by both sides wiped away by errant touches or an offside call, and one solid save by Pablo Sisniega. In the 27th minute, things took a bit of a turn as Dejan Jakovic was called for a handball that everyone in the building missed the first time around. Nico Lodeiro slots it home and LAFC are down early, yet again, 1-0. Just five minutes pass before referee Joseph Dickinson switches out his yellow PRO referee top for rave green, as Latif Blessing is whistled for a foul in the box that is literally never actually called a foul except for tonight, and one more Nico Lodeiro PK later, it’s 2-0. The sky is falling along with the rain in Seattle. LAFC looked to regroup after the half and bringing on both Andy Najar and Eduard Atuesta seemed to do the trick. Play improved and passes tightened up a bit, but LAFC was still having trouble creating meaningful chances. To further the Black and Gold frustration, a clear handball on Seattle wasn’t just missed, there was also no call to review it. Turnabout couldn’t even lead to fair play. A crisp connection between Joao Paulo and Raul Ruidiaz late in the match salted things away for Seattle, and it’s another punchless, shutout loss for LAFC in September. Also, on this episode, a significant PK makes its way into This Day In LAFC History, Hello Kitty stops by, Filly learns the word pejorative, and for much of the episode, it’s actually Scarf who sounds like the optimist. We celebrate both Hispanic Heritage Month and Rosh Hashanah while Beita Time returns to MLS. The boys remember their “Wait, What?!” moment of the podcast, and it’s not Kenneth Vermeer’s FIFA 21 rating, Filly quotes Dolly Parton, and Scarf helps the haters on social media do some good with their awful hot takes. Lick your wounds quickly, Defenders, as LAFC heads back home to take on the Whitecaps in just 5 days! We hope you enjoy Episode 118 of Defenders of the Banc!
In this episode, Andrew Wiebe and Matt Doyle preview MLS Cup with the man who’ll call the game for ABC. ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman calls in to talk about the third-time-in-four-years Cup matchup, the chip on Brian Schmetzer’s shoulder, the pressure on Seattle, Jozy Altidore’s short- and long-term future and the reported trade that will send Darlington Nagbe to Columbus just as Julian Gressel is asking for a raise. Also in this episode … Matt Pentz (The Athletic) talks Nico Lodeiro, Schmetzer’s long Seattle history and the possibility of a parade in Seattle. Toronto FC legend Danny Dichio explains what Michael Bradley means to the club. Sounders At Heart’s Jeremiah Oshan’s X-Factor (Nouhou?) and prediction. Canada FC’s Aron Papernick gets emotional in picking an upset for the visitors. Plus, Matt and Andrew make their predictions. Major League Soccer's long-running podcast Extratime is now available on YouTube, every Monday and Thursday. 2:56 – TAYLOR TWELLMAN: MLS Cup matchup, Brian Schmetzer, pressure on Sounders 8:54 – TAYLOR TWELLMAN: Jozy’s future, Michael Bradley’s contract option and Greg Vanney 17:34 – TAYLOR TWELLMAN: Darlington Nagbe traded to Columbus, What now for the Fire? 23:53 – MATT PENTZ: Sounders’ place in Seattle, Nico Lodeiro & Schmetzer’s story 35:06 – DANNY DICHIO: Toronto FC legend on club’s ups and downs + Michael Bradley 47:43 – ARON PAPERNICK: Canada FC host gives Ontario prediction 53:17 – Wiebe and Doyle make their MLS Cup 24 predictions
Episode 67 is here, and, unfortunately, with it comes the end of the 2019 season, with two less wins and one fewer game than we had hoped. Apparently, it’s time to wake up from the dream season that was 2019.In an episode we are calling Yellow and Green Make LAFC Blue, Filly and The Scarf recap the ugly defeat at the hands of the Seattle Sounders. While it’s hard enough to play against the 11 on the other side, the yellow team did us no favors tonight either. Beyond blatant handballs, flagrant fouls, and a lack of awareness of what was happening on the pitch led LAFC to fight an uphill battle all night, even while opening the game’s scoring in the 17th minute. A wonder strike from Eduard Atuesta gave us an early lead, but the front line of Nico Lodeiro, Jordan Morris, and the debut game against the Black and Gold for Raul Ruidiaz proved too much for LAFC. The 3-1 defeat doesn’t take away any of our accomplishments during this historic season, but it does give the feeling of unfinished business. We have so much to be thankful for, while still being left wanting so much more. Congratulations to LAFC on a wonderful sophomore season. We at Defenders of the Banc cannot wait to see what 2020 has in store. Thank you for all of your support throughout this second season of Defenders of the Banc! Look out for new episodes, more fundraisers, and fun interviews this offseason as we look to do something other than drink out of a shoe until the first match at The Banc next season. We Love you ALL,Filly and The Scarf
Jornada 29: Matías Almeyda visita al campeón, Nico Lodeiro ante Wayne Rooney por boleto a Playoffs, esto y más en efecto MLS
In this week’s episode, Steve Zakuani recaps the loss at Sporting Kansas City, then answers listener questions and discusses who he would vote for to rep the Sounders’ midfield in the club’s all-time Best XI. Zakuani also previews Saturday’s match at FC Dallas, including how the Sounders can "replace" Nico Lodeiro's production at the No. 10 position.
Hard to imagine how the season could have started any better than it has. As the Sounders enter the first international break of the season, they find themselves atop the Supporters' Shield standings as the league's only 3-0 team. They've outscored their opponents 10-3 along the way, including a 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire last weekend. The goals are flowing like perfectly heated chocolate from a fountain, and the front four of Raul Ruidiaz, Nico Lodeiro, Victor Rodriguez and Jordan Morris have combined for a rather astounding eight goals and seven assists. Fullbacks Kelvin Leerdam and Brad Smith have even gotten in on the act with a couple goals and an assist between them. In addition to discussing the Sounders' awesomeness, we also talked to Lamar Neagle about his new team, Game of Thrones and his thoughts on Sounders fashion. We take the chance to have a great conversation with Niko Moreno @ELROLONOW on an ongoing rumor re: Nico Lodeiro, and the new well-earned contract for Cristian Roldan, as well as his take on its parity with the Jordan Morris contract. Why haven't we made a big signing yet? Should we be worried that Kelyn Rowe has signed elsewhere, and other teams are making moves (even if they're not so big? Is Torres sticking around? What are the places we need to shore up, and what should we make of the Sounders off-season strategy so far?Regular featured family:@cm_peterson Cat Peterson@kevin_zamira Kevin Zamira@nate_bowling Nathan Bowling@podfish Steve Ketelsen@muffintopmodel Tim HamiltonPlease tell your friends and SUBSCRIBE! on iTunes, Stitcher, or touch the RSS feed link below. This production of the Flounders B-Team is released under the Creative Commons 3.0 International Share-Alike Attribution License. Lo' and behold the Sounders are heading into another busy week riding a four-match unbeaten run. Yes, that's a season best and they are actually looking reasonably good doing it. The latest result was easily their most convincing, as they scored their first shutout win of the season by beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0. Neither of the goals were particularly well constructed -- Nico Lodeiro scored a penalty and then got a brace off a whipped-in ball that badly fooled the Whitecaps goalkeeper -- but the Whitecaps never really threatened. Jeremiah and Aaron discuss the win, as well as Raul Ruidiaz's debut, Magnus Wolff Eikrem's release and the rumors around Paolo Hurtado. This week's music: RVIVR - "Ocean Song", Perry Como - "Seattle", RVIVR - “The Tide”, Woody Guthrie - "Roll On Columbia" Thanks to James Woollard, Sounders Public Address Announcer, for doing our sponsor reads. The Sounders are officially back in the playoffs, making it a perfect nine for nine. In fact, you can go back to the USL era and the Sounders have qualified for the playoffs in 11 straight seasons and have made it all but one year of the Adrian Hanauer-Brian Schmetzer era, which dates to 2002. This is no small feat on its own, but was punctuated nicely with a 4-0 win over FC Dallas. Say what you will about their recent struggles -- and they are significant -- beating anyone by that margin should give us some confidence. It was especially good to see Will Bruin get back onto the scoresheet, Victor Rodriguez continues to show that he might be the underrated signing of the summer and Nico Lodeiro and Clint Dempsey are up to their old tricks. All in all, a pretty satisfying way to go into the final game of the season where a win would clinch a first-round bye. Review of the previous week is the focus of Ep. 103. Vancouver dropped their CCL Semifinal 1st leg 2-0 at Tigres. The massive Tuesday game in Monterrey kicked off a slate of four matches in MLS Week 3 for our clubs stretching from Tuesday to Sunday. Whitecaps took a disappointing 2-0 home loss against Canadian rival Toronto FC on Saturday before Portland and Seattle put on a pair of shows. First Timbers overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit in a battle of unbeatens with Houston, storming back for a convincing 4-2 victory. We debate whether or not Portland are the top side in MLS right now. In the league's lone Sunday match of the week, Seattle dropped their title banner and handed NY Red Bulls their first loss of the season. Joevin Jones, Nico Lodeiro and Jordan Morris all contributed as Sounders won their first home game of the season. Preview for the next week focuses on Portland's match at Columbus, a rematch of MLS Cup 2015.
The guys save the tactical talk for Thursday in Toronto, where Sigi Schmid will bring his expertise to the table. Instead, it’s time to learn about how Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders were built with the men who did the building. First up is Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko, who explains why the salary cap is even trickier than you think and how he went about putting the pieces together after getting the job in late 2013. What happened with Jermain Defoe? How’d the Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore deals get over the line? How would an MLS Cup victory change the club and the city? After the break, Sounder GM Garth Lagerwey calls in after a trip to South America to dish on Seattle's roller-coaster 2016 season. Next up? Another flight, this one to Europe, then an MLS Cup appearance that nobody thought possible in July. How shocking was it when Obafemi Martins took off in February? How crucial was Jordan Morris’ decision to eschew Germany for his hometown club? Did Luis Suarez help seal the Nico Lodeiro deal? Did analytics play a role in the Sounders (and Toronto FC’s run)? In the mailbag, the Best XI drops and Matt gives his own team of the year, ATL UTD makes a splash in the transfer market and drafts of all different varieties are on the horizon.
