Once an admired figure in NSW police, the now disgraced Roger Rogerson left a trail of corruption and death as he moved his way through the force. Former NSW Detective Deborah Locke was at the centre of Rogerson's grip on the police, and faced horrific consequences for standing up to him and his corruption. Deb sat down with host Brent Sanders, and unpacked the details of her life in the force and how she overcame both Rogerson and the police itself. The injury-ravaged Seattle Sounders couldn't quite get on track in Matchday 5 as they played a snoozer in Saturday's scoreless draw vs. Nico Lodeiro and the Houston Dynamo. True Blue Conversations is inclusive of all stories, this weeks guest had a controversial policing career not by her choosing. Deborah Locke, a former Detective served 12 years with the NSW police. She began in 1984 as a trainee at the Redfern Police Academy and concluded her service in 1996 when she was discharged from the service and deemed “medically unfit” as a result of workplace victimization and harassment as an internal witness, more commonly referred to as a “whistleblower.” During her time in the NSW Police Force, she was stationed at various commands including the notorious Kings Cross Undercover Drug Unit, the Gaming Squad, Parramatta Detectives, and the Fraud Squad. In 1989 Deborah received a Commissioners Commendation for bravery in relation to her undercover work. As a young city detective in the early 1980s to mid-1990s, she was exposed to the reality of criminal investigation in a major city. That reality was the widespread police corruption which involved detectives freely associating with high-profile members of Sydney's underworld. The police with whom she was working, were involved with accepting bribes, protection money, drug trafficking, fraud, and the improper use of confidential information, but to name a few. When she presented the senior officers of Internal Affairs and subsequently the highest levels of the Police Force with compelling evidence of what she had observed, she was branded a “whistleblower” and placed her life at risk. Since leaving the police she has been involved in developing and advocating for services for families of people with disabilities, she is the author of WATCHING THE DETECTIVES. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Deborah Locke Editor: Kyle Watkins
Check out a secret "icebreaker" interview with Jackie at patreon.com/hkpodcasts. In this conversation, Jackie Malton shares her experiences working in prisons and her insights into the psychology of criminals, particularly focusing on masculinity, addiction, and the impact of childhood trauma. She discusses her interviews with a serial killer and the complexities of rehabilitation, self-discovery, and the importance of storytelling in understanding human behaviour. Malton emphasizes the need for self-reflection and the role of mentorship in personal growth, while also addressing the challenges faced by individuals in the prison system. Jackie and Hugh also discuss various aspects of policing in London, emphasizing the need for geographical restructuring, rebuilding public trust, and understanding gang culture. She explores the role of direct entry in policing, the challenges faced by officers, and the importance of rehabilitation in prisons. --- Jackie Malton is a UK-based television script consultant and former senior police officer. Born in 1951, she made history as one of the first openly gay women to rise through the ranks of the Metropolitan Police Service. Malton's remarkable career spanned multiple areas, including the Flying Squad, Murder Squad, and Fraud Squad. Malton is perhaps most famous for being the inspiration behind the iconic character DCI Jane Tennison in Lynda La Plante's Prime Suspect drama series. Her experiences as a woman detective in a male-dominated establishment, combined with her bravery in speaking out against police corruption in the 1980s, made her a compelling figure for La Plante's character. AOC, Bernie, and almost all progressive electeds threw their support behind Biden even as the general public overwhelmingly lost confidence in him -- and for what? This week on Open Sources Guelph, it's starting to feel like the bad guys are winning. It's certainly true that a bad guy won in Russia this week, and he has a friend in the United States who he wants to join him in all the winning, but that's still be determined because that guy's got bigger problems. In terms of the smaller problems, we'll have a guest on to talk about solutions. This Thursday, March 21, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: The Totally Vlad Show. In an election outcome that was assured long before a single vote was cast, Vladimir Putin has secured a fifth term as the President of the Russian Federation, which means he'll be in charge for a period longer than even Joseph Stalin. While Putin secures his continued dominance in the Kremlin, countries in eastern Europe are preparing for war so where does Russia go from here? "Bloodbath" and Beyond. Donald Trump did it again, threatening America with violence in the event that he doesn't win the U.S. presidential election this fall. But maybe he was just lashing out because he's seemingly run out of gullible suckers who will cover his legal costs as he faces the possibility of having his assets seized by the New York Attorney General. We will catch up with some American politics. The Fraud Squad. March is Fraud Prevention Month; in fact, 2024 marks the 20th annual observance of the occasion. These are very fraud-y times indeed with reports coming in all the time about someone losing money to a cryptocurrency scam or losing thousands of dollars to someone posing as their grandchild's criminal lawyer, but there are ways you can protect yourself. Jeff Horncastle from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre will join us to talk about how. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.
Kyla Zhao wrote her debut novel, The Fraud Squad (link), with no expectations and no pressure. But as it came out with media attention and fanfare, she was writing her second novel in the midst of promoting the first and had to learn to juggle the dueling responsibilities of introducing one novel to the world while writing the next, Valley Verified (link).Kyla also talks about how the pandemic lockdown in 2020 directly resulted in her authoring her first book, and how she manages her author career alongside a burgeoning job in the tech industry.Kyla Zhao's website: https://kylazhao.com/Barbara Hinske's website: https://barbarahinske.com/J. Last Year I had the absolute honor of talking to Kyla Zhao about her debut novel THE FRAUD SQUAD and had an absolute blast so when I found out she had another book coming out in 2024 I just knew I wanted her back on the show! Today on OTS Kyla and I catch up on what's been going on, how she took on book 2 (and the many different titles it could have had) and how she brought together the tech and fashion spaces in her sparkly new novel. Week 14 is in the books and somehow 30 teams are still live for playoff football, but some of them don't seem to pass the smell test. On the NFC side the Eagles have lost two straight games to the 49ers and the Cowboys losing their number one seed and division title for now, while the wildcard teams include the Packers (who lost to the Giants) and the Vikings (who have swapped QB again and put up only 3 points this weekend). They're chased by 4 more teams on the same record, each with their own problems. On the AFC side the Chiefs lost to the Bills and tried to blame the refs, the Dolphins lost to the Titans, all the wildcard teams are on their second or third choice QB, with 4 more teams tied on the same record in the hunt for those wildcards. Is there anyone you can trust in this race? Even the AFC leaders Baltimore struggled this week, needing overtime to beat the LA Rams. We look at all the games from last week, then turn our attention to week 15. Cleveland look to stay in the hunt with Joe Flacco under centre against a Chicago Bears team led a Justin Fields who is fighting to save his job for next season. Baltimore look to show they are the team to beat in the AFC as they take on a Jags team that's in a tailspin and hoping Lawrence, one more week removed from his ankle injury, will be back to top form. The Bills host the Dallas Cowboys in a must win game to keep their playoff dreams alive, and Philly hope to turn around the ship away to a Seattle team that is currently one game out of the playoff picture. All this and much, much more on your one-stop shop for news, views, and overreactions to all things NFL, the All Four Quarters podcast!

Overnighters, Episode 539: Biden's Punitive Crypto Tax UK's National Fraud Squad YouTuber Served Thru Tweet and More The TL;DL - U.S. Congressmen Demand Explanation for Administration's Hostile View of Crypto-Two U.S. Congressmen have written a letter to the chair of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) demanding an explanation for a chapter the agency prepared for the "Economic Report of the President" that expressed “a hostile view towards the digital asset ecosystem.” The lawmakers believe that the CEA's opinion is a reversal of the position taken in the president's “Executive Order on Ensuring Responsible Development of Digital Assets.” Biden Administration Proposes Punitive Tax on Crypto Mining-In addition to the letter from Congressmen Davidson and Flood, the Biden administration has also proposed a punitive tax on crypto mining operations. The tax would equal 30% of a mining firm's energy costs, and it is intended to discourage crypto mining due to its environmental impact. The tax has been met with opposition from the crypto industry, which argues that it would be unfair and would stifle innovation. UK's National Fraud Squad-The UK government is setting up a National Fraud Squad to tackle cryptocurrency fraud. The squad will have 400 new posts and will be tasked with investigating and prosecuting cryptocurrency fraudsters. The government has also proposed new regulations to crack down on cryptocurrency fraud, including banning cold calls to sell financial products including crypto. France's Senate Proposes to Allow Crypto Influencers to Promote Registered Crypto Companies-The French Senate's Economics Committee has proposed to allow crypto influencers to promote products of registered crypto companies. This is a more lenient approach than the one taken by the National Assembly, which in March voted to effectively ban crypto ads by social media stars. The Senate's amendment is seen as a positive development for the crypto industry in France. It is likely to lead to increased investment and innovation in the sector, as well as increased awareness of crypto among the general public. The European Crypto Market-A new survey produced by Greenfield Capital, the European crypto investor, names Lisbon, Berlin and Paris within a list of the world's top ten crypto hubs. Lisbon topped the list of crypto-friendly locations, with half the survey's respondents listing the Portuguese capital when asked to name three hubs. The results come amid significant concerns over the viability of the United States as a base for crypto firms, as regulators stateside pile the pressure on both startups and their banking partners. Crypto YouTuber served lawsuit through tweet-A cryptocurrency YouTuber, Tom Nash, has been served a lawsuit through a tweet after a United States court allowed the action. Nash is one of ten defendants named in a class-action lawsuit against influencers alleged to have promoted the now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX without disclosing their compensation. FTX lawyers and consultants bill $103 million in first quarter-The lawyers and consulting firms assisting cryptocurrency exchange FTX through its bankruptcy proceedings are set to cash in a total of $103 million over the first quarter. The invoices from March were slightly higher than January and February's figures of $34.2 million and $32.5 million, respectively. (5/3/2023)-Welcome back to the Crypto Overnighter. In this US political moment, we see an uptick of strikes, walkouts and labor organizing inside the United States. And we feel it's crucial to hear from railroad workers directly in order to understand their working conditions, as well as the role the US government played in shutting down this strike- stripping workers of their democratic rights. We take you through the timeline of railroad negotiations over the last three years, looking closely at the Biden Administration's use of the 1926 Railway Act as a strike-breaking tool, in the service of multi-billionaire railway carriers, lobbyists and their CEO's. In a time of record-breaking profits for the railway industry, we look at the basic demands of workers- a handful of paid sick time days that were denied to them through a bipartisan consensus. We also take a lens to the corporate media's coverage of the railroad issue and examine its intensely corporate bias, as it relentlessly warns of economic disaster should workers strike, yet never reports on workers' demands. Finally, we discuss the role of neoliberalism and the bipartisan betrayal of workers as a real political force pushing the country toward fascism. We hear from other socialists about the powerful history of US railroad strikes and what must be done today in terms of the labor movement and electoral politics in order to stop a fascist uprising and revitalize the labor movement inside the United States. As always, we bring you this analysis from a socialist perspective, and we very much depend on your subscriptions to continue this podcast. It's been a rough start to the Year of the Rabbit, with tragedies hitting close to home. Marvin and Hanh take some time to talk through the recent events that happened right in our backyard before diving into the pop that's been getting us through this tough week. On this episode, we check out M3GAN, the new creepy robot horror movie from Blumhouse, which provided some much needed absurdity and levity. It was the summer of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Kyla Zhao (@kylazhao) was living alone in California while completing her last year at Stanford University. Being all alone for months and not being able to unite with her family in Singapore led her to turn to books for comfort. During the height of anti-Asian racism, Kyla realized that many of the books she read did not feature characters of color with whom she could relate to. This realization inspired Kyla to write her own book—one that features an entirely Asian cast of characters and is set in her hometown of Singapore. Although Kyla never thought she would publish her book, after completing her entire draft in 3 months, she eventually found an amazing agent and publisher who believed in her story and in Asian representation. In this interview with Kyla, she shares with us her journey to becoming a creative novelist, from her early exposure working at fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Tatler, how the pandemic inspired her to write her first novel, how she managed to complete her draft in 3 months, how she found an agent who believed in her work and eventually received multiple offers from major book publishers, and finally her tips and advice for aspiring Asian American female writers! About Kyla: Kyla is a lifestyle writer, fashion journalist, and author of her first debut novel, The Fraud Squad, a story about a working-class woman who worked her way into high society in order to get her dream job at a posh magazine and the world that unfolded from there. She grew up in Singapore and moved to California to attend Stanford University and majored in psychology and communications. She graduated in 2021 and has been working at a tech company in Silicon Valley since. But before that, she worked at several fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Tatler, which brought her up close with the glitz and glamor of high society. In addition to The Fraud Squad, she has two more books coming out in the next two years, another adult novel and a children's novel. Kyla Zhao had her first women's magazine byline at the age of sixteen, writing about weddings for Harper's Bazaar Singapore before she's even had her first kiss. Since then, she has also written for the Singapore editions of Vogue and Tatler—experiences which that helped shape the settings in this book. A native Singaporean, Kyla now works in Silicon Valley after graduating from Stanford University in 2021 with an MA in communications and BA in psychology. She's still trying to understand why Californians adore hiking and Patagonia fleeces so much. https://kylazhao.com/ #KylaZhao #TheFraudSquad VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. And VOX VOMITUS has been going “horribly wrong” in the best way possible for the past TWO YEARS! Host Jennifer Anne Gordon, award-winning gothic horror novelist and Co-Host Allison Martine, award-winning contemporary romance novelist have taken on the top and emerging new authors of the day, including Josh Malerman (BIRDBOX, PEARL), Paul Tremblay (THE PALLBEARERS CLUB, SURVIVOR SONG), May Cobb (MY SUMMER DARLINGS, THE HUNTING WIVES), Amanda Jayatissa (MY SWEET GIRL), Carol Goodman (THE STRANGER BEHIND YOU), Meghan Collins (THE FAMILY PLOT), and dozens more in the last year alone. Pantsers, plotters, and those in between have talked everything from the “vomit draft” to the publishing process, dream-cast movies that are already getting made, and celebrated wins as the author-guests continue to shine all over the globe. www.jenniferannegordon.com www.afictionalhubbard.com https://www.facebook.com/VoxVomituspodcast https://twitter.com/VoxVomitus #voxvomitus #voxvomituspodcast #authorswhopodcast #authors #authorlife #authorsoninstagram #authorsinterviewingauthors #livevideopodcast #livepodcast #bookstagram #Jenniferannegordon #allisonmartinehubbard #allisonmartine #allisonhubbard #liveauthorinterview #livepodcast #books #voxvomituslivevideopodcast #Jennifergordon --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/voxvomitus/support

Ryan Grim has been accused of "running cover" for the squad members' strategy, while Kshama Sawant argued their vote for a union voting bill was a clear betrayal. Is Ryan right to say it made sense for the squad to follow the advice of some union members who wanted them to adopt that strategy? Or is Kshama right to call that "political gaslighting?"
