This week, we're rebroadcasting an episode from the Resources Radio archive while the team is on a break through the rest of December. We'll be back with new episodes in the new year; in the meantime, enjoy this throwback and poke around the archive at Resources.org for more topics you might be interested in. In this week's episode rerun, host Kristin Hayes talks with Rebecca Epanchin-Niell, a senior fellow at Resources for the Future (RFF) who coauthored a journal article with RFF scholars Alexandra Thompson and Tyler Treakle about the role of the public in detecting invasive species. Pointing to a recent incident in which a member of the public spotted an Asian giant hornet in Washington State, Epanchin-Niell describes how more than a quarter of detections of invasive species—and possibly more—stem from these citizen scientists. Recognizing the essential role of the public, policymakers can make it easier to alert authorities about the presence of unusual species. Years of Service: 2019-PresentNeill began his career in law enforcement in 2019 as a reserve detention deputy in the Jerome County Jail. He was then hired full-time as a detention deputy for the Gooding County Jail. As Neill explains, the jail helped him learn how to talk to people who were going through difficult times. In October of 2021, Niell was hired as a police officer for the Gooding Police Department. As a new officer, Neill handled typical patrol calls including traffic, domestic violence, and theft. In 2023, as a result of staffing shortages, Neill was thrown into the deep end and was promoted to detective where he began investigating crimes such as sexual assault, child abuse, drug trafficking, and homicide. In May of 2023, Neill was assigned his first homicide investigation. During this interview, Neill offers a candid assessment of what it is like to be a young detective, the steep learning curve, and relying on older more experienced detectives to help him with investigations.

Abstract: Cephalopods are highly visual animals with camera-type eyes, large brains, and a rich repertoire of visually guided behaviors. However, the cephalopod brain evolved independently from that of other highly visual species, such as vertebrates, and therefore the neural circuits that process sensory information are profoundly different. It is largely unknown how their powerful but unique visual system functions, since there have been no direct neural measurements of visual responses in the cephalopod brain. In this study, we used two-photon calcium imaging to record visually evoked responses in the primary visual processing center of the octopus central brain, the optic lobe, to determine how basic features of the visual scene are represented and organized. We found spatially localized receptive fields for light (ON) and dark (OFF) stimuli, which were retinotopically organized across the optic lobe, demonstrating a hallmark of visual system organization shared across many species. Examination of these responses revealed transformations of the visual representation across the layers of the optic lobe, including the emergence of the OFF pathway and increased size selectivity. We also identified asymmetries in the spatial processing of ON and OFF stimuli, which suggest unique circuit mechanisms for form processing that may have evolved to suit the specific demands of processing an underwater visual scene. This study provides insight into the neural processing and functional organization of the octopus visual system, highlighting both shared and unique aspects, and lays a foundation for future studies of the neural circuits that mediate visual processing and behavior in cephalopods. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.08.23.504847v1?rss=1 Authors: Parker, P. R. L., Martins, D. M., Leonard, E. S. P., Casey, N. M., Sharp, S. L., Abe, E. T. T., Smear, M. C., Yates, J. L., Mitchell, J. F., Niell, C. M. Abstract: Animals move their head and eyes as they explore and sample the visual scene. Previous studies have demonstrated neural correlates of head and eye movements in rodent primary visual cortex (V1), but the sources and computational roles of these signals are unclear. We addressed this by combining measurement of head and eye movements with high density neural recordings in freely moving mice. V1 neurons responded primarily to gaze shifts, where head movements are accompanied by saccadic eye movements, but not to head movements where compensatory eye movements stabilize gaze. A variety of activity patterns immediately followed gaze shifts, including units with positive, biphasic, or negative responses, and together these responses formed a temporal sequence following the gaze shift. These responses were greatly diminished in the dark for the vast majority of units, replaced by a uniform suppression of activity, and were similar to those evoked by sequentially flashed stimuli in head-fixed conditions, suggesting that gaze shift transients represent the temporal response to the rapid onset of new visual input. Notably, neurons responded in a sequence that matches their spatial frequency preference, from low to high spatial frequency tuning, consistent with coarse-to-fine processing of the visual scene following each gaze shift. Recordings in foveal V1 of freely gazing head-fixed marmosets revealed a similar sequence of temporal response following a saccade, as well as the progression of spatial frequency tuning. Together, our results demonstrate that active vision in both mice and marmosets consists of a dynamic temporal sequence of neural activity associated with visual sampling. In this week's episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Rebecca Epanchin-Niell, a senior fellow at Resources for the Future (RFF). Epanchin-Niell's research focuses on ecosystem management—in particular, understanding how human behavior affects ecological resources and identifying strategies to improve ecosystem management. Much of her work has focused on invasive species, including strategies to control established invaders, improved monitoring, and cooperative management. Hayes and Epanchin-Niell discuss a new paper that Epanchin-Niell coauthored—with RFF colleagues Alexandra Thompson and Tyler Treakle—about public contributions to the early detection of new invasive pests, the critical role of citizens in identifying emerging threats from invasive species, and the quantification of public contributions to pest detection. On this episode, Adam talks to Matt O'niell about how focusing on his state helped him grow from $16M to $300M in just a few years. Matt shares how state is 80% of success, and the morning and daily routines he uses to keep his state in a great place, because if you feel amazing, your results are amazing. He discusses how he got to a point where he felt totally overwhelmed and was convinced that he couldn't do anything more with his business, and a mentor asked him how he thought Richard Branson did it all when he had 100 times as many companies as Matt. That shifted his thinking to realize he had a limiting belief to think he couldn't do at least TWICE of what he was already doing, so he set out to replace himself in the company in sales so he could focus on growing and leveraging instead of selling.
