Sermon Notes Luke 9:22 NIV And he said, "The Son of Man (Jesus) must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life." Luke 9:23 NIV Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." Luke 9:27 NIV "Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God." Luke 9:28 NIV About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. Luke 9:29 NIV As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Prayer and breakthrough go hand-in-hand. Luke 9:30-31 NIV Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Moses is the great leader and prophet who brought the Law. Elijah was the great prophet who represented all other prophets. Those who die with faith in Jesus are very much alive right now. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. The breakthrough you are looking for comes from a constant connection to God in prayer. 'From the land of Canaan,' they replied, 'to buy food.'" Genesis 42:8-9 NIV "Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, 'You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.'" This is a test moment, and Joseph has the choice to exact revenge or show mercy. Genesis 42:21-22 NIV "They said to one another, 'Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that's why this distress has come on us.' Reuben replied, 'Didn't I tell you not to sin against the boy? "The idea that sin is grievous to God also has profound practical implications for people who want to change their lives and habits. If you say, "I must stop doing this thing because it will get me into trouble," then you are not really sorry for the sin itself but for the consequences or results of the sin. You are not sorry primarily because it grieved God but because it grieved you or others. This means that as soon as your sinful habit stops causing trouble for you, you will stop causing trouble to it. Can I show mercy, even if I'm not sure if it's Godly sorrow or worldly sorrow? Genesis 42:24 NIV "He turned away from them and began to weep but then came back and spoke to them again. I am amazed by the wealth of American citizens. We enjoy a terrific standard of living. Yeah, I know inflation is raging and the economy has entered a recession. Even though we may feel squeezed, the average American is wealthier than the vast majority of people in the world. We take for granted abundant electricity, food and water. We have appliances, cell phones and automobiles. We have access to doctors, dentists and pharmacies. I could go on, but won't. I wonder, does wealth make our faith in Jesus lukewarm? It did in the ancient city of Laodicea. The Christians there were wealthy for their day. Jesus also said they were lukewarm in their devotion to him. They were so lukewarm they made him sick. That's essentially what it says in the book of Revelation. Jesus challenged them to repent. Revelation 3:21-22 contains his promise if they did. “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (NIV) Two things strike me in these verses. First, are the words “just as I overcame.” Jesus also overcame challenges. He faced the cross. The second item is the hope for the lukewarm. We can overcome tepid devotion to Jesus. When we do, he will give us the right to rule with him. In boxing, a challenger for the title with potential to win is called a contender. They enter the ring to battle for the championship. The word is used in other sports as well, describing teams good enough to vie for the championship. It is even used to describe competitors in business. The book of Jude uses the word as well. We are told to contend for the faith. One way we do this is by watching out for each other. Jude 1:21 says “keep yourselves in God's love” or “watch over yourselves in God's love.” Then Jude gives some specific ways to care for each other. Verse 22 says “Be merciful to those who doubt.” (NIV) Two words provide the meaning to this verse. First is the word doubt. It describes one who hesitates or is uncertain. Many followers of Jesus have a few doubts or are uncertain about some items of the faith. How do we treat them? Well, the second word shows the way. It is translated “be merciful.” It can also mean “to be kind” and “to assist.” It is the word used of God's action toward us. His mercy assisted us by providing Jesus to secure our forgiveness. So, we too must be kind to those followers with doubts. We must assist them to answer their questions and strengthen the certainty of their faith. A mentor is simply someone who is just a little further along in their Christian walk and is still growing and able to point you to Christ. We should always value the value that people bring to our lives. Jennifer shares her own run-in with bad company that corrupted her good character. 1 Cor 15:33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character. Definitions: Misled: Wrong Idea or impression about someone or something Synonym of Misled: lead astray - throw off the scent - put on the wrong track Corrupt: Change or debase by making errors - alter - manipulate What are some ways we can be led astray? Peer pressure Pleasure seeking Rebellion Searching for acceptance/approval False teaching False messaging How to keep from being led astray? Limit exposure / influence Submit to positive influence Set boundaries Know truth Top 5 Tips for building true, lasting friendships: Start With Jesus- Work on yourself and on becoming HIS friend First. -Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. -John 15:15 "No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you." -Mark 12:30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[f] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[g] There is no commandment greater than these.” Seek to become someone’s true friend -Proverbs 18:24 NIV A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. -Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Treat them how you want to be treated (or even better!) Golden Rule -Romans 12:10-11 "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times. Walk With The Wise -Proverbs 13:20 NIV He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harms. -Proverbs 27:17 NIV As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. -Proverbs 16:28 ESV "A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends." -Proverbs 17:9 ESV 'Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.' Be Picky!! Keep your inner circle small. -Proverbs 12:26 NIV A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. -Proverbs 17:17 NIV A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. -Proverbs 22:24-25 NIV Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared. -Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work; If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Run, Stop and Reflect -1 Cor 15:34 Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.
Building relationships is key in business, whether you’re building relationships with your clients, your staff or for collaborations, as a business owner you need to be great at making friends. We feel so blessed that we (with God) have created a platform where we can allow women to make friends with other like-minded women who are on a similar journey to use and get what it’s like to build a business with God at the center. We encourage you to learn about how to build relationships with others and to analyse the friends and community around you that you do have and workout who is building you up and keeping you wise and who are fools, who don’t have your best interest at heart. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” -Mark 12:41-44 (NIV) Two ways we can give: a.) I can give based on reason. b.) I can give based on revelation. - What does giving do? -Giving breaks the grip of materialism -Giving strengthens my faith -Giving is an investment for eternity -Giving always blesses me in return -Giving makes me happy 3. Let's Glorify the Lord Together.
