In a cinema in south-west Germany, an audience is gathered to watch an Oscar-winning film, The Zone of Interest, about the life of Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz. Those present comprise Jewish people from around the world, and the special guest is Rudolf's grandson, Kai.The topic was rarely visited during Kai's childhood. It was only after a school history lesson that he began to comprehend Rudolf's role as head of the largest mass murder site in history. Journalist Shiroma Silva talks to Pastor Kai Höss as he seeks to disabuse congregations of the thinking that has all too often blamed Jewish people for all the world's ills, and describes himself as a Gentile who has been saved by Jewish leaders.

Every day Rudolf Höss oversaw the killing of thousands of people at the death camp and then went home and acted like a doting father to his family. Höss was brought in by top Nazis to pioneer the industrialisation of the mass murder of Europe's Jews and others. He lived in a house that shared a wall with Auschwitz, metres from the crematorium, where he and his family enjoyed a happy domestic life - his wife once described their life at the house as 'paradise'.The house was home to a Polish family until last year when it was taken over by the Counter Extremism Project who invited History Hit to explore the house, which is largely as it was when the Hoss family lived there. Dan travels to Poland with historian and best-selling author Thomas Harding to discover more about Höss' role in the Holocaust and what the house teaches us about 'the banality of evil'. They learn about what went on there, what Holocaust artefacts were recently found in the attic and the future of the house as a centre to combat hate.Warning: this episode contains descriptions of human suffering and genocide which some listeners may find upsetting. With special thanks to the Counter Extremism Project, Dr Hans-Jakob Schindler, Keith Burnet and Thomas Harding. You can find out more in Thomas' book Rudolf and Hans: The German Jew and the Hunt for the Commandant of Auschwitz. Now, thanks to Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, Elliott Broidy, and Dr. Thomas Kaplan, it is being transformed into a global center for combating antisemitism and extremism. Rabbi Pini Dunner explores how this initiative ensures history's lessons are neither distorted nor forgotten in an era of rising Jew-hatred.

Men blir texten därför ond?

Alright, so Patrick Madrid had an amazing convo with Dana, an atheist who called in with a pretty heavy question:   Dana's Big Question: "Can people come up with their own moral values without God?" He's like, “Look, I don't believe in God, so I think humans create their own morals. Isn't this whole ‘God is moral' thing just a ‘God of the gaps' argument? Like, we're uncomfortable with the moral mystery, so we make up a God to fill in the blank.”   Patrick's Response: He said that atheists can be good people. No one's saying atheists are running wild in the streets. But here's the thing: why should anyone bother being good without God? What's the deeper point?”   Basically, he said that while atheists can be decent, honest folks, they're still borrowing from a moral system rooted in something bigger, whether they admit it or not. Without God, morality becomes more like, “I like this, I don't like that,” and not something with actual weight behind it.   Dana's Take: Dana admits that atheists have a bit of a moral problem: if there's no God, it's all kind of subjective, right? It's just humans deciding what's good or bad. He also mentioned he hopes there's an afterlife, but he's not exactly banking on it.   Patrick's Counter: Patrick dropped a bombshell: without God, the world is basically one big animal kingdom. It's just "survival of the fittest". There's no real "good" or "evil", just whatever works for you. He threw in this tough question: “If we're just a bunch of neurons firing off in our brains, why should I care about what's fizzing in your brain? Or mine, for that matter?”    The Catholic Curveball: Patrick wasn't done. He said we all know deep down that stuff like truth, love, and justice are real, not just random feelings. And since those things can't be physically measured, that's a clue there's something bigger than just nature, a.k.a. God. Then he added: God's grace is open to everyone, no matter how late in life they figure it out.   The Anne Frank Challenge: Dana brought up a tough one: how is it that a man like Rudolf Höss (a Nazi) could repent at the last minute and go to heaven, but someone like Anne Frank, who didn't believe in Jesus, might not since she was Jewish? Patrick didn't flinch. He explained that God's mercy is bigger than the worst sins. If you genuinely repent, even at the 11th hour, you can go to heaven. That's the beauty of Christianity. If you knowingly reject God, yeah, that's a different story.   Wrapping it Up: Patrick ended on a hopeful note, basically telling Dana, “Hey man, I'm praying for you. And who knows? Maybe one day you'll embrace Catholicism."

On this edition of Parallax Views, freelance writer Corey Atad, who has written in such publications as Esquire, Slate, Hazlitt, and The Baffler, joins the show to discuss his piece in Welcome to Hellworld on Jonathan Glazer's Oscar speech and the reaction to said speech. Glazer decided to bring up the Gaza War when accepting the award for his Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest. He was accused of saying he was "refuting his Jewishness and the memory of the Holocaust" even though the clip was taken out of context. What he said was actually a commentary on the hijacking of Jewish identity and Holocaust memory for political purposes (which is what he sought to refute), a warning/call to resistance against dehumanization. As Glazer explained, he felt that Zone of Interest was not just a film about the past, but also the present. In other words: we need to be aware of where dehumanization has led in the past and where it could lead in the present. Glazer also made reference to Israel's Occupation of Palestinian territories during this speech. This has all sparked backlash and the aforementioned distortion of Glazer's words. A letter signed by at least a thousand people in Hollywood (some, like Jennifer Jason Leigh, recognizable, but many not) denouncing Glazer. Other, such as playwright Tony Kushner and the Auschwitz Memorial director Piotr Cywiński, have come to Glazer's defense. Corey joins the show to give his take on the speech as well as to offer his commentary on The Zone of Interest and relaying the tale of actress Vanessa Redgrave's 1978 Oscar speech which cause a similar controversy when she called out the extremist Jewish Defense League (referring to them as "Zionist hoodlums). We'll also delve into The Zone of Interest from the perspective of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil" concept, Corey's criticism of The Zone of Interest, and the themes of alienation at the heart of The Zone of Interest's story centered on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, his wife Hedwig, and their family against the backdrop of the Third Reich's exterminatory horrors. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.

In this wide-ranging conversation James and I discuss Glazer's methodology to adapt Martin Amis' Holocaust novel for the screen, including his determination to create two separate films inside one film: what we see (the bucolic family life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss) and what we hear (the horrifying sounds of death from over the wall of the concentration camp next door). Glazer uses 21st century technology to tell this story to indicate that this film is not about history, but about the present moment, including provocative ideas about the ways we all try to compartmentalize and overcompensate to tune out the horrors of the world that make our own comfortable lives possible.  We also compare The Zone of Interest to other Holocaust works to discuss why it's so difficult to tell these stories with sensitivity and respect and without compromise, some of the most noteworthy sequences, and what the film has in common with Alain Resnais' masterful short film about Auschwitz, Night and Fog.  And of course we discuss some of the bad faith arguments from Zone of Interest haters, and some hot takes online from people who even if they saw and liked it, may not have grasped its point. Night and Fog is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel. Follow James Slaymaker on Twitter. James' book Time is Luck: The Cinema of Michael Mann, is now available in paperback and Kindle. Jonathan Glazer is a trailblazer of a filmmaker. "The Zone of Interest" is another win for him and filmmaking in general. He was able to use sound to highlight the horrors of the holocaust. He chose to not show any kind of violance whatsoever and the sound makes up for. It's a simple story of a family of Nazis who live in a beautiful home RIGHT NEXT TO the Auschwitz concentration camp ran by Rudolf Höss. It focuses mainly on Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, seeing life in their evil lives, living peacfully, almost gracefully with the help of their staff which happen to be Jews. There are no happy endings, only the dissection of how cruel we can be as a people to one another and we don't have to see any deaths. It's through what some of the characters comment and how they are use to the fact that what goes on the next is completely normal to them. It's mind-boggling. It's hard pill to swallow throughout because these folks are living happily with no acknowledgement of the evil they are a part of and sadly, proud of. This film is sort of a meditation piece of cinema. We see dramatized facts unfold of evil and we also see how men can evolve by throwing the very last of human morales. I recommend everyone to see this film. Glazer did a good job getting us up and close to this film by having invasive camera work, attention to detail in almost every shot, and the cast is great. They play their roles convincing. However, the plot is is almost minimalistic.Three and a half out of four tokes.#thezoneofinterest #filmreview #morningreel

Ben & Rob cannot cover 'The Zone Of Interest'. Jonathon Glazer's latest film is uncompromisingly bleak, with even its slim glimmers of light only better illuminating our own guilt and complicity in society's continued evils. Starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, Glazer paints a cruelly slow picture of the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig, striving to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.Nominated for Best Picture and four other Academy Awards, 'The Zone Of Interest' is as brutally depressing as it's possible for a film to be, and pulls no punches in pointing the finger squarely at the audience. Can a mental health check in disguised as a light entertainment movie podcast even dare to discuss this film? On this week's show, Extreme Friends of the Pod and co-authors of The World Only Spins Forward, Isaac Butler and Dan Kois, fill in for Dana Stevens and Julia Turner. The hosts begin by dissecting The Zone of Interest, filmmaker Jonathan Glazer's audacious movie about the Holocaust that's told through the lens of Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig as they live their somewhat ordinary lives in a compound outside of Auschwitz. The film has garnered both praise and severe critique from critics, many of whom are split on Glazer's detached aesthetic and imaginative approach to depicting genocide. The Zone of Interest has racked up five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Then, the three dive into Nyad, the (maybe?) true story of marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, as she attempts to swim unassisted from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening stars in the titular role alongside Jodie Foster, both of whom are up for Oscars (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively). Finally, what is a good director, anyway? What does it look like, what does it mean, and is there a difference between producing, screenwriting, and directing – or is it some strange amalgamation of all three? These questions come from a listener, Emily, and the panel attempts to answer them.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses their film preferences while airborne, inspired by David Mack's essay for Slate, “What Makes a Perfect ‘Plane Movie'?” Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Outro music: "Pull Me Out" by Mike Stringer. Musik: Adi Zukanovic.

One of the prisoners in the first transport of women to Auschwitz - 999 women transferred from Ravensbrück concentration camp in March 1942 - was Sophie Stippel. She was registered as prisoner number 619.  She was arrested because she belonged to the group of Jehovah's Witnesses.  A few days after arrival, Sophie was employed as a domestic helper in the villa of the camp commandant, Rudolf Höss, which probably saved her life. Her duties included shopping and cooking, and sometimes taking care of the commandant's children. Teresa Wontor-Cichy of the Auschwitz Museum Research Centre tells about the story of Sophie Stippel.
