Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 11 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week Rockie Rosenberg kicks off the episode with an interview of Nocona Burgess, a Native American indigenous artist and member of the Comanche Nation who now resides in Santa Fe. As the son of a former tribal chief and the great-great-grandson of one of the most revered Native American leaders, Chief Quanah Parker, his work presents strikingly modern depictions of Indigenous men and women from various tribal Nations of North America. Through the interview the pair discuss how Nocona has a great overview of the business side of art due to his extensive experience in navigating the art world at a young age. They also touch on Burgess' podcast experience and the classes he teaches at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) which deal with the business side of art. In our second interview, Jared Serios sits down with Lyn Sazon to talk about Serios' career as an artist who works in the mediums of digital and traditional art. Serios divulges how he started down the path of his artistic journey, including his early years and accomplishments, and talks about how the art he creates reflects his strong roots and cultural background. Sazon questions Serios about his creative process, and how he developed his unique style of artmaking. The two conclude the interview with a look at some of the artists that Serios admires, and what plans he has for the near future of his career.

On the outside, 18-year-old Caleb Ray Diehl was a normal teenager living a relatively normal teenage life. He was born and raised in a small town – Nocona, Texas – and extremely close to his family. After celebrating his 18th birthday party at his Mom's house, Caleb prepared to make the hour and a half drive to his sister's house in Bedford, where he was living while he finished high school. He never made it, and he's not been seen since. When someone the Diehl family knew began making strange claims concerning Caleb's disappearance, it was confusing. The man was close to them, and it was unimaginable he'd try to muddy the waters just to save Caleb's mother worry. So, was it for a more nefarious purpose? This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, November 16th. Tuesday will offer a break from our recent cold trend. According to the National Weather Service we can expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 58 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. On Tuesday night it will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 40 degrees. Enjoy it while it lasts, however, as the rest of the week after Wednesday looks like it will be returning to late November reality. An Iowa City man was sentenced to 60-years in prison Monday for killing a man and injuring several others when he attempted to kill himself by driving the wrong way on Interstate 80 in 2019. 34-year-old Stephen Lucore was found guilty of several charges, including second degree murder and homicide by vehicle, for the death of Robert Sawyer, 64, of Nocona, TX. Members of the Sawyer family, including David Sawyer, who was driving the vehicle Lucore collided with, were in attendance Monday and pleaded for justice. The state of Iowa spent about $12.3 billion in federal funds in fiscal 2020 that represented about a $3 billion increase — much of which was tied to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act — according to an audit issued Monday by State Auditor Rob Sand. Sand said about $2.3 billion of the 32.7 percent spike in federal aid the state received during the 2020 fiscal year came from the CARES Act, while changes in non-CARES and non-loan programs included an increase of about $518 million in funding for Medicaid expenditures. Sand critiqued Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds for using funding to pay her personal staff, which he described as having too many people. He suggested that the justification for using the federal funding was not properly done, and some money might need to be returned. A spokesperson for the governor said that her staff has spent much of its time since the pandemic began dealing with the after effects of the pandemic, so using recovery funds to pay them is appropriate, and the U.S. Department of Treasury has signed off on this use. Iowa will receive roughly $5 billion over five years in new federal funding from the recently passed bipartisan infrastructure bill. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law Monday. The new federal funding for roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects will provide a revenue boost similar to when the state raised its fuel tax by a dime a gallon in 2015, according to Iowa's Department of Transportation director. Stuart Anderson, director of the Iowa Department of Transportation's transportation development division, said the funding boost represents a 25 percent increase in the first year, and increases to a 35 percent boost by the fifth year. “That definitely will mean more funding is available for construction work,” Anderson said. The U.S. Senate passed the $1.2 trillion infrastructure funding bill in August and the U.S. House passed it last weekend. Of Iowa's senators and representatives, only Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Democratic Representative Cindy Axne voted in favor of the bill. Are you a fan of trying new restaurants? This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, September 8. Wednesday's weather will bring with it cool air from the north that will stay with us until the temperatures rebound a bit this weekend. According to the National Weather Service the high will be near 76 degrees with sunny skies in the Cedar Rapids area. The change in weather will also come with some wind, as a 5 to 10 mph wind will increase up to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 30 mph. A hot, dry summer — particularly in northern Iowa — has created favorable conditions for more harmful algae blooms in Iowa lakes. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported 24 swim advisories at state park beaches this summer because of microcystins, toxins generated by harmful algae. These toxins, if ingested, can cause gastroenteritis, allergic responses and potentially-fatal liver damage. This is double the 12 microcystin advisories in 2020. Iowa's Board of Regents unanimously approved Tuesday the construction of a $395 million University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics site in North Liberty starting as soon as this month. UIHC had focused discussion on the $230 million health care facility that needed state approval, board documents released Friday outlined the full 469,000-square-foot scope of the project at the corner of Forevergreen Road and Highway 965. A 300,000-square-foot portion will feature up to 48 beds, 21 emergency care rooms, 16 operating rooms and two more procedure rooms, along with laboratories, a pharmacy and other amenities. Community health care providers — including Mercy Iowa City, Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids and UnityPoint Health — unsuccessfully opposed the new hospital, arguing that it will drive them out of business and potentially increase the cost of healthcare for local consumers. A judge Tuesday found an Iowa City man guilty of second-degree murder and six other charges for intentionally driving the wrong way and crashing into another car in 2019 on Interstate 80 during an attempt to kill himself but instead causing another man's death and badly injuring four. Sixth Judicial District Judge Jason Besler, following a non-jury trial in July for Stephen Lucore, 34, announced his verdict Tuesday. He found Lucore, originally charged with first-degree murder, guilty of second-degree murder, homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, willful injury causing serious injury and three counts of willful injury causing bodily injury. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/iowa-city-man-charged-in-fatal-i-80-crash-is-found-competent-to-stand-trial/ (According to a criminal complaint, Lucore drove his Hyundai Sonata )the wrong way about 9:30 p.m., June 16, 2019, on I-80 and caused a head-on collision with a Honda Pilot driven by David Sawyer, 31, of Frisco, Texas. Sawyer's passenger, Robert Sawyer, 64, of Nocona, Texas, died in the crash. Depending on how the judge runs the sentences — consecutively or concurrently — Lucore could face up to 75 years in prison. Battles between top ten ranked college football teams do not happen often in Iowa. But this Saturday that will be something that has never happened, a game between two top 10 ranked in state rivals. For the first time, the football teams of Iowa and Iowa State will both be in https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll (Associated Press' Top 25 )when they play each other for the 68th time. Not only that, but both are in the top 10 as they approach Saturday's meeting in Ames. They've never even been in the top 10 at the same time. Iowa State's No. 7 preseason ranking was its all-time high in the poll. Iowa State is No. 9, Iowa No. 10. Texas is famous for its cowboy boots and a boot making tradition that has its earliest roots right here in Nocona, Texas, home of the Fenoglio Boot Company. Nocona, Texas Nocona, in the North Texas Hill Country, has a rich deep history based in the cowboy's life from the infamous Chisholm Trail, to the boot companies like Justin and Nocona. To meet the needs of the cowboys driving cattle along The Chisholm Trail, H.J. "Daddy Joe" Justin moved to the banks of the Red River where he founded Justin Boots. Following Daddy Joe's death, the Justin brothers moved the business to The Fort Worth Stockyards. His Daughter, Enid Justin "Miss Enid" stayed in Nocona and founded Nocona Boot Company, in direct competition with her brothers, in efforts to follow her father's wishes and support the small town that had supported her family for so long. Under Miss Enid's direction Nocona Boots became an infamous and respected boot brand in the great state of Texas. In 1990, with the death of Miss Enid, the Justin brothers acquired the Nocona brand. The town facing hard times but with talented specific personnel, the Fenoglio family stepped up. The Fenoglio family, who settled in Nocona in 1886, picked up the reigns and charted a new course in boot making. Holding onto Miss Enid's business model, with modern updates, the Fenoglio Boot Company was founded. Today the Fenoglio Boot Company utilizes the specialized personnel skill set available, some who have been crafting quality boots the time-honored way for over 40 years. Fenoglio Boot Company builds the highest quality truly Texas made boots, living up to their company's motto: "There's Nothing Finer than Fenoglio."
