The release of this episode represents our triumphant return to Thursday night podcasting after more than a one month hiatus. For a variety of reasons, one of them predictable (Thanksgiving), one of them planned well in advance (medical procedure), and one of them an unfortunate reality in our world today (Keith had Covid), we had an extended break during the most wonderful beverage time of the year. Fortunately everyone is now healthy and so far the only lingering effects seem to be centered on Keith's olfactory system. While we wait for his sense of smell to continue its slow journey back to normal we will be relying on Andrew's sensory perceptions even more than we usually do for the foreseeable future. During a recent trip to our neighborhood Tap and Bottle, Keith found a different variation of an old favorite imperial stout and that is what we will be sharing with you this week. For this show we will be trying the Old Rasputin Barrel Aged Russian Imperial stout. They have two versions, one aged in bourbon barrels and one aged in rye whiskey barrels and the latter is the one that we will be trying. Prior to 2010 these were made in limited quantities that were only available locally in California. Fortunately for us they have increased production which allows for a broader yet still limited distribution. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch. If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@gmail.com.
P&C drink and review Old Rasputin, by North Coast Brewing Company, then review a short novel by Leo Tolstoy. Literary contributor Longinus joined in this podcast. Ivan Ilyich seems like a decent man. When he's tempted to think he's not living his life the way he should, he scoffs. He does what's expected of him, and observes all the proprieties! But when he suffers an injury that slowly and inexorably leads to his death, he suffers a terrible battle with his conscience. This short, dark story is worth a read, and some reflection.
This I'll feature the classic Old Rasputin as the Beer In Front plus there are a plethora of Jagoffs this week!

Please accept our apologies for this being delayed a week. One of us was in Disney World and forgot to set this episode up to release. This week we discuss the seasonality of beer as we taste a beer not usually consumed in the summer in a Russian Imperial Stout. This happens to be a favorite of one of the dads as we taste North Coast's Old Rasputin. As always we talk about interesting beers from the last week, some good stories, and at least one dad joke. Thank y'all so much for listening.

The boys are all carbed up and thankful on this mildly horny episode of the BRJ. We talk about Thanksgiving, some truly heinous crimes against beer, and Paul Blart: Flesh Mall. Also, Matt broke the rules and bought himself a rauschbier... Thanks to Chad Crouch for the use of his track Tin Can Trap, and to Jerry Holkins for the use of the clip from Acquisitions Intoxicated. Thanks as always to Ehrling for the use of their song “https://music.apple.com/us/album/i-feel-good-single/1274618498 (I Feel Good)” as the intro and outro of our show. And thank you for listening.
North Coast Brewing, makers of Old Rasputin . . . and other beers I’m sure. Actually they make a lot of beer. Like a whole lot, and if the awards are to be believed, a lot of good beer. We’ll see if they live up to their hype and see if this brewery gets a gold from us as we, Have a Drink.
Serendipity! Kismet! Fate! Chance! Like minds! Whatever the reason, or lack thereof, this was a very special cast. The gents has the very special pleasure of welcoming celebrated author Bud Smith to the cast for this one. Author of the novel "Teenager," memoir "Work" and short story collection "Double Bird," Bud is a humorous and very real voice in American literature. He weighs in on Mikhail Bulgakov's masterpiece "The Master and Margarita," as well as Murder City Devils' "In Name and Blood" while Nick M. knocks back North Coast brewing co's "Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout." And all before noon. This is a fun one and we are so very thankful for Bud's good taste in reading The Master and Margarita and singing its praises a week or so before recording so we could invite him on the show with us. A grand time was had by all. Enjoy and thank you for listening!
Our 3rd official, and technically 4th, tasting episode! We know its summer but we did lagers on the last block so we went for dark beers. We got our hands on the Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewing Co. for obvious reasons and two different versions of Old Rasputin from North Coast Brewing and Culminating Mass from Breakside Brewing. It's a Portland heavy tasting but there's a lot going on in the PDX right now and we for sure talk about that too. Cheers and Enjoy!

What We’re Drinking:Ivan by Victory Art BrewingABV: 13%IBU: 100Notes: Our version of the imperial stout, in addition to a fair dose of dark malts, It contains many special malts - whiskey malt (six-row barley smoked on peat), peat brewing malt and Belgian brown malt. This adds to the viscous thick taste and coffee aroma the smells of fuel oil and creosote. High alcohol is masked by a complex aroma, but beware! Beer is great for long, cold winter evenings. It goes well with chocolate desserts, as well as with dishes cooked on charcoal.Old Rasputin by North Coast BrewingABV: 9%IBU: 75Notes: Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. In this episode we look at Imperial Stout, review Old Rasputin, and talk about key points of 2016.
2016 may have sucked, but this year-end episode of Beats, Beards & Brews is all right. Dan and Eric kick things off with a review of the Howling Rain and Black Knight beard oils from Black Rebel Beard Co. out of El Paso. Evan, Eric and Dan then list off their top three albums (plus some extras) that they listened to in 2016 and that may or may not have been reviewed on the podcast. They also put together a super random Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/123699728/playlist/5LaPnTQLdYZYKslpMlVw69 Finally, the three brothers from three very different mothers (and fathers), give a toast to their new Russian overlords who may or may not take over the U.S. in 2017 (За твоё здоровье!) and partake in the drinking of Old Rasputin Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewing Co. out of Fort Bragg, California. Evan somehow proves to have the most knowledge about Rasputin due to having watched the 1997 animated film Anastasia. But you should probably look to Wikipedia over the skewed cartoon dramatization of this historical figure. Eric, Evan and Dan also give their New Year's resolutions to close out the final podcast of 2016 (which we almost thought Dan sabotaged again, but that's another story we won't get into). Post-Show Fun Fact: Many Russian cities have a strip club called Rasputin. We cannot verify this factoid from Wikipedia, but let us know via Twitter or Instagram if you are able.
Finishing the year strong. Literally. With guests Liz Suggs of Maine Brew Bus and Emily Kingsbury of Slab Portland, we dive into epic, imperial pieces from Mahler and Dvorak while drinking imperial stouts from Barreled Souls and Old Rasputin. These beers kicked our asses, but these pieces kicked ass. Happy end of 2016. Let's get it out of here and start fresh in 2017!
The beer we've all seen but never bought is up this week. It's the North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. This delicious near-black stout is the catalyst for some in depth, comprehensive, and intellectual discussions on... public bathroom etiquette and, naturally, the state of the music industry. More thrilling banter this week from Three Beers Inn. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our announcer Keith Howell delivers a warning at the beginning of tonight’s episode. You’d be wise to listen to it very carefully and then completely disregard Keith’s cautionary words and jump right in to listening to Episode 25! His claim of the TNCC crew getting really hammered in the final hour of the show is possibly slanderous, certainly inflammatory, and quite possibly the absolute truth. Ok ok, we got a little more shnockered than usual. So sue us. But don’t sue Keith, he’s innocent in all of this and a really nice guy. It’s just Mike and I this week. Kicking it old school. We focus a lot on beer. Discussing an upcoming collaboration beer by El Segundo Brewing Co and Steve Austin. We also touch on some nerd news and the new Japanese Star Wars trailer which contains a lot of new footage! Beer Revolution Brewing Double Fist […]
This week we’re rounding up our top albums of 2014 with regular guests Chris Rohling and Brett Enquist. 2014 was an interesting year for music, with only a few true standouts but tonnes of very good stuff. Reflecting this diversity, all of us had quite different choices. We also thoroughly enjoyed the always-great Old Rasputin […] The post Episode 81: Favourite Albums of 2014 & Old Rasputin appeared first on Pub Chat.
