It's part two pf the forty-seven-part Mike May trilogy and in this episode, we discover how a young boy from the suburbs of Chicago eventually is drawn to the wilds of Alaska and one of the most famous three-foot gauge railroads in the world, the White Pass and Yukon Route. Mike has built a beautiful rendition of this railroad in HOn3 that's just eighteen inches wide and over twenty feet long. Today the White Pass is the busiest tourist railroad in America after being shut down in 1982 due to lack of freight traffic and then re-open for tourism few years later. Mike has carefully modeled the railroad and eventually become a Master Model Railroader. We also discover that he enjoys writing, having had several articles published in the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette as well as having the layout featured in the 2022 edition of Great Model Railroads. It's another great podcast and one we're sure you'll enjoy!!

Jeff and Heather Hardesty opened Narrow Gauge Brewery inside Cugino's in Florissant back in 2016. A longtime home brewer Jeff knew what he wanted to brew – a style of beer that wasn't readily available in St. Louis. What he didn't know was how the beer community would react. The reaction was excitement and lines out the door. Seven years later, the North County brewery has long outgrown their basement brewing space. They're in the process of expanding brewing and retail operations to a building just a few doors down. They hope to open this spring with plans for an expanded tap room. We sat down to talk about hazy IPAs, the beer making process and their expansion into supermarket shelves. You can try Narrow Gauge's beers inside Cuginos or pick up beer to-go. You can also now find their beers at stores around St. Louis, Kansas City Columbia and parts of Southern Missouri.
We invite he Narrow Gauge mafia from western Wisconsin to talk about modeling non standard gauge layouts and the operations.Discussions range from switching to narrow gauge, to operations, plus taking things slower but with more detail. The crew on this episode is Joe Binish, Jack Gutsch, Mike Jordan, Pat Thoney and hosted by Thomas Gasior MMR.This episode is sponsored by Stickers!Plus the usual outtakes and bloopers.
After catching up on Thanksgiving, Matt and Jay talk a little beer, specifically how good Narrow Gauge is. They then get into a large Batman discussion: the best Batman stories of any medium; there is talk of the Animated Series, Batman '66, Batman Beyond, and the comic books. They end with a little bit of homework talk. This weeks beer was Old Bakery Beer Co's Up River IPA. This week's music is from Tech N9ne; we used his track "Still Right Here". In this Episode of the American Downhiller Podcast, Lew, AJ, Daron and Marco are joined by Bella Wright whose rollercoaster 21-22 season included the high of the Olympics and the low of a fractured heel, but finished with her first National Downhill Championship win!Bella breaks down her winning run on the storied Narrow Gauge run in Sugarloaf and what it meant to her. Then the boys also share the stories of their first National Championship wins and how important those races actually are, despite being “only” the Nationals and not World Cups.Bella then talks about growing up at Snowbird and how important and motivating it was to travel to Beaver Creek and Aspen each year as a junior racer and see the World Cup superstars in person. Her big dreams were fueled by seeing and feeling the excitement and craziness of the White Circus. This rang true for all of the Downhillers as each shared their first glimpse of their heroes. The group then talks about what makes a great coach and all of them were on the same page - being a motivator is KEY to inspiring young athletes to push their limits through good times and bad times. They then all talk about how important patience is to athletes, even though none enjoyed the inevitable waiting game of getting to the top and realizing their dreams. Finally, Doug asks Bella the two things that she will be working on this Summer to take her from a career best 10th on World Cup to the Podium. One will be a technical focus on her core and how that will keep her body aligned and strong. And mentally, she will be focused on trusting her training and hard work, instead of the minutiae of line or times or results. This episode is perfect for the Ski Racing Fan, the up and coming racer, as well as for all the junior coaches out there who want to hear from an athlete who has risen to the top through great coaching! To contact us, email Doug at doug@eliteam.comThanks for listening!

The state of Maine has approximately 17.5 million acres of forested land. And the number of living trees is estimated to be 24.4 billion. We've got a lot of woods, and within those woods, is a lot of history. An entire podcast series could be dedicated to the history of Maine's forests and its inhabitants. But for tonight, I'll be sharing the creepier side to one of Maine's smallest forests. And, was a murder/suicide that occurred adjacent to a trail in those woods become the catalyst to a haunting? Before we jump into the episode, I did want to give a reminder that ALL of our I Want to Believe social media & email are in the show notes. In 1916, concerned that the remote Rhodope mountains would be hard to defend against foreign invaders, a young Bulgarian Kingdom decided to build a narrow gauge railway to connect villages and towns to the rest of the country. The Bulgarian King himself, Tsar Boris III, drove the first locomotive to the town of Belitsa to celebrate its opening. But the Septemvri - Dobrinishte Narrow Gauge Railway would far outlast the King and the Kingdom, the communist era that followed, and the rocky post-communst period. Today, the railway is still a fixture of life in the region as a vital link to remote villages with no road access. But decades of neglect have left many stations crumbling. Train enthusiast Ivan Poulevski, a member of the organization “For The Narrow Gauge Railway,” helped found the House-Museum of the Narrow Gauge Railway in one of these abandoned stations. A sign on the building says the museum was built “for people, by people.” In this episode, Poulevski describes the decision to build the museum using only volunteers, how to interpret multiple eras of Bulgarian history through the lens of a railway, and why they have had no plans to seek official museum accreditation in Bulgaria. Tonopah was booming and calls for a railroad were heard from the beginning. The area was exploding with all sorts of people. Miners, engineers, shopkeepers and just regular people. Twenty mule team wagons from Sodaville and Candelaria carried the supplies to and the silver ore from Tonopah. Only the highest grade of ore was transported out. Several stage lines were in operation and could not handle the people headed in or out of Tonopah. Several attempts were made to construct a railroad from Sodaville on the Carson and Colorado, standard gauge the Nevada Central from Battle Mountain to Tonopah, Eureka to Tonopah and from San Joaquin, California to Tonopah. The railroad was finally built by 1904 and the Tonopah Railroad was the first in and its descendent, the Tonopah & Goldfield Railroad was the last out in 1947. Join me in learning a little bit of history of the Tonopah Railroad.

As we begin to move beyond the initial health crisis brought about by the Covid 19 virus, into its economic impact, some politicians are arguing we should invest in high speed rail links between towns and cities in some of the more densely populated parts of New Zealand. One of the arguments made against such an idea is that our narrow gauge can't support such services.
Tasting 66 comes courtesy of our buddy, Aaron Young, who brought us some down some Narrow Gauge Brewing. This small batch brewery in Florissant, MO doesn't even distribute in their state. The cofounder of St. Louis’ most popular brewer of progressive hazy styles shares the techniques and philosophy behind their sought-after beers, and debunks some misperceptions in the process. Creating a sense of unique character and difference within a popular beer style like hazy IPA can be a challenge for brewers, but for Jeff Hardesty and Narrow Gauge Brewing, the answer is nonstop experimentation and testing on their small 6 bbl brewhouse. In this episode, he discusses how they move beyond the “easy button” hops (Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy) and blend hops for unique flavor expressions, how trial and error led them to ditch expensive hops in the whirlpool in favor of less expensive bittering hops, using a less-common British ale strain for fermentation that provides an alternate to more standard London Ale III or Conan flavors, the ways they use different base malts to achieve flavor goals and create differentiation, how they construct complex recipes that delicately balance acidity, sweetness, hops, and fruit in sour fruited IPAs, and more. From the basement of an Italian restaurant just outside of St. Louis, Narrow Gauge has started to gain a name in the Midwest and beyond as purveyors of great hazy IPAs - and other outstanding beers, as we find on this episode. We review four crowlers of beer that Craig schlepped back from a recent trip to Missouri, and the mix of quantity and quality has us hurtling towards shambling inebriation. We try to find Narrow Gauge’s place in the current hazy beer wars, and wax philosophical about the Perception of Aqueosity and the Arbitrarity of Rankings. Ryan introduces two new segments, and Craig will just put anything in his mouth. Beers Reviewed FloMO Pils Fallen Flag IPA Cloud City IPA Old Town Porter
