Coady Willis is a drummer based in Los Angeles CA. His has a robust pedigree of performing and recording with The Murder City Devis, Big Business, Melvins and High On Fire, to name a few. He is also one of three drummers on the all percussion record, Hew Time, along with Joe and Dale Crover. Coady tells us how his uncle helped paved the way for life as a rock n roll drummer, why seeing the band Tribe 8 changed his early teen perspective on performance and he shares his experience of playing in bands in Mt. Vernon and Seattle in his formative years. He also shares his journey from being a young Dale Crover fan to eventually playing alongside Dale in Melvins. The two drummers discuss their individual approaches to joining an established band, the hurdles that come with it, and why being conscientious of the group's chemistry is crucial. Finally, Coady talks about his long history with High On Fire and why recording and writing the new record Cometh The Storm (out now via MNRK Music Group) was such an educational and rewarding experience.  We hear a few tunes from Cometh The Storm and of course the drummers talk drums. Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pretty Girls Make Graves' sophomore album, The New Romance. Originally released in 2003, this was the Seattle punk band's Matador Records debut. After more than a decade out of print, the album will return to us in a limited edition white vinyl pressing in stores on November 3. A deluxe digital version also lands today on digital services and features two b-sides “Magic Lights,” newly available on streaming, and a cover of Bow Wow Wow's home-taping anthem, “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!” And what's more, singer Andrea Zollo and guitarist J. Clark guest on the latest installment of our Matador Revisionist History podcast series alongside producer Phil Ek and our host, Matt Sweeney.  Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001. The members – Andrea Zollo, Derek Fudesco, J. Clark, Nick Dewitt, and Nathan Thelen – were already local underground luminaries, owing to their time in punk and hardcore bands like Death Wish Kids, Area 51, and Murder City Devils. The quintet released an EP, a handful of 7” singles, and a full-length, Good Health (Lookout! Records), before getting a cold email from Matador Records founder Chris Lombardi, who may or may not have read a positive review in Pitchfork. A deal was struck and the band decamped to the bucolic Bear Creek studio to track The New Romance with Ek.  On this episode, Zollo and Clark go deep on the band's early years, talking influences (Drive Like Jehu, Ink & Dagger, Fugazi), rock band do's / don'ts, and what it's like to practice riffs in a freezing cold paper maché igloo.

This week we hear from Joe's other voice, his drums. In the winter of 2012 and 2013, Joe found himself on a dreaded break. Mister Heavenly, The Shins and Cold War Kids were either between tours or between records, leaving him in his least favorite position, idle. He was still playing and recording almost daily, but with records rather than bandmates. One day during a "shuffle session" ( he would hit record, shuffle his music library and start playing with whatever tune came into his ears), he got the idea to not only pay homage to one of his favorite drummers Max Roach, but to "cover" M'boom, an all percussion masterpiece released in 1970. Ultimately, Hew Time only hints at the jazzier elements of M'boom, but each composition is a song for song interpretation of spirit of the record. As soon as the skeletal versions were written, Joe brought the tunes to Dale Crover (The Melvins, Nirvana) Coady Willis (Big Business, Murder City Devils, The Melvins, High On Fire) and Kyle Crane (Rufus Wainwright, Daniel Lenois, Neko Case) where they recorded live over the course of two days with Toshi Kasai. Please enjoy, It's Hew Time. Musikalisch befeuern diese Debatte: Ghostpoet, Reverend and the Makers, Algiers, The Last Shadow Puppets, Yves Tumor, The Murder City Devils und Sorry. They've each played in a lot of bands, but this episode focuses on their time together in The Cops, who were one of the most exciting live bands around for a number of years. In addition to their musical output, they are Seattle cultural impresarios, with Mike running the consistently good Mt. Fuji Records, and Drew co-owning Hazlewood, one of the best places to have a cocktail in the city. There's so much we talked about in this episode, so as a teaser, I'll just share with you the notes I took while editing this: "David Yow parties hard. ATP drug dog taunting. Dog suit. Partying with Red Fang and Big Business, shunning Danny from Tool. Murder City Devils' tour rider. Hold Steady assholes. Touring with Cursive and Jeremy Enigk. House with water torture buckets. Soap Opera Star's band." Listen and figure out what all of that means. This episode features the music of The Cops, all of which is available at Mt. Fuji Records.

I can't believe another year has gone by, but it's time for the annual 5/10/15/20 edition of Random Old Records! EPISODE #68 features a collection of tracks from the years 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013, along with some vintage news reports about the headlines of the day. Get into your time machine and jet back to the past!In 1998, The Jesus & Mary Chain came back after a few years out of the spotlight, the Jesus Lizard released their final albums, and bands like American Steel and Murder City Devils broke out huge. By 2003, post-hardcore dominated the zeitgeist, with the Blood Brothers, Cursive making their definitive LPs. In 2008, the garage rock underground exploded with classic releases by Nobunny and the Ettes, while punk rock ruled the day in 2013. Check out this episode for a dose of nuclear-powered nostalgia!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. Artist James Allister Sprang is one of my favorite people in the whole wide world. On a recent weekend trip down to Philadelphia, I had the privilege of catching up with James on the very day that he completed his MFA at the University of Pennsylvania. Moments after his final critique, we popped into a small room on campus and recorded this interview. James and I discussed the birth and evolution of his performance persona GAZR, the politics of sampling and appropriation, his interest in language as material, tricksters, the exploitable failings of voice recognition technology, concrete in the literal and metaphorical senses, his history with poetry, and hot take music jokes that might be a decade late. The outro music is “Midnight Service at the Mütter Museum” by Murder City Devils.

Coady Willis is the power house drummer of noise groove -duo Big Business who have also been 2-4th’s of the Melvins. With the Melvin’s , Coady found himself playing drums along aside one of his idols in Dale Crover and the two made for one hell of a dual drumming team and incredible phase of the Melvin’s. We get into nightmare gigs in New Orleans, Texas BBQ, learning to play double drums with an idol and compensating with visual cues for the spaciness that is the Melvin’s music, last minute subbing for Unsane’s Vincent Signorelli , the origins of Big Business and Murder City Devils, plus touring tips and the early connections o the drums that lasts to this day.. Hey Phantomaniacs – it’s an all-new year and I’m proud to be kicking it off with an interview I’ve been waiting over a year for. My goal is to bring you no less than twenty-four new episodes over the next twelve months, and I have a lot of cool stuff planned. If you don’t know, dany only (yes, that’s correct – no caps) is a professional wrestler that’s been working the Southeast for over a decade now. He’s a three time APW Tag Team Champion, a former GCW Tag Team Champion, and held the NWA Anarchy Tag Team titles with his partner, Stryknyn, for 77 days. All he ever wanted to do was wrestle, and he does it as much as he can. Over the years he’s developed a strong philosophy about the business and the people in it, and he’s not afraid to voice that philosophy loudly and often. Sometimes to the chagrin of others. More recently The Human Hand Grenade has taken up the flag of the patriot, pointing out fallacies in American culture and society; particularly the media. His recent time in Afghanistan opened only’s eyes to the true meanings of both liberty and injustice, and he has brought those revelations back home. Needless to say, this has also caused no small amount of consternation. I know dany from his time in Platinum Championship Wrestling and Dragon Con Wrestling. The massive tattoo on his chest – “Hated Yet I Persevere” – is what first drew my attention, but his ring work and mic work are what made me a fan. From his time as a heel with the Prophets of Doom to his role as Enforcer of the Empire to his run as the hottest babyface in PCW, only has always been one of the main draws of any card I’ve seen. We talk about all of this, as well as only’s life outside of wrestling. It’s a fascinating conversation with an intense dude and I’m glad it finally happened. I hope you guys enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed recording it. CAUTION: The Needless Things Podcast is most certainly not aimed at a mature audience, but does contain strong language and maybe even words of a sexual nature, such as “Wankle Rotary Engine”. Please listen responsibly. “Procrastibate” by LeSexoflex.com “Press Gang” by Murder City Devils

In this week's episode the boys talk about Killzone Mercenary.Handsome Rob is butt hurt that Angry Rob was unable to hang out with him during the week. We learned that Angry Rob is somehow able to bend both time and space in order to increase the number of hours he works every week. Nick doesn't get bullied at work but still manages to cry. Kevin, is Kevin nothing interesting there. They talk about Hiroshi Yamauchi's death in the most tasteful professional way possible. Angry loves Japanese games but not Rockstar games. While talking about MGS V the boys find a new and exciting way to use the Kinect that can actually make games better. Oh yeah GTA V was talked about and they try to answer the age old question, what would you let your son do first, smoke weed or play a GTA game.Intro song "Only" by Kris KeyserEnd song "18 Wheels" by The Murder City Devils
