Amidst the joyous chaos of the season, the McMillan family sought the perfect Christmas tree, yearning for the nostalgic allure of an old-fashioned celebration. Their journey led them to the Mark Twain National Forest, navigating with an old paper map as phones lost signal. Amid nature's beauty, the children explored, each finding wonder in their own way.

Hiccups or no hiccups, the podcast must go on! Betsy and Kate strive to once again provide a holiday-related picture book. Now Barbara Cooney was much on our minds since Betsy premiered the cover of an upcoming Barbara Cooney picture book bio coming out in 2024. Today's little book is actually still in print (not always a given) and it's an interesting consideration of the effect of WWI on small town Christmas celebrations. We quote So I Married an Axe Murderer, Christmas Spite (which would be a great name for a book), what a "treat poke" might be, and discuss how often it is that women are doing ALL the work and getting none of the credit. The Lord chose to reveal himself to us through a story --a story that actively shapes us the more we study and understand it. But it's not only the gospel narratives that we see in scripture that can shape us --all stories have a profound ability to cast us in their image. The question is, what kind of stories are we listening to? As moms, why should we be particularly thoughtful about the stories that are defining our family culture? Not in a way that is fearful, but in a way that helps us to glory in the best story ever told?As we head into the Christmas season, what are some particularly sweet stories and books we might share with our families? What traditions, old and new, might we enjoy together that will help us to reflect on the mystery of what God has done for us?Listen in for an uplifting conversation with Leah Nicklaus, a homeschooling mama of five sweet and wild boys. Her family lives in Iowa where they are involved in their local church and community. Leah is passionate about beautiful books that point us to the gospel message, nourish our minds, and reveal what is good, true, and beautiful. , The Little Things in Life, written by the legendary Peg Lynch. The show, starring Lynch and Robert Dryden, aired during the attempted revival of dramatic radio in the 1970s, specifically from 1975-1976. What is the secret to successful children's books? Today we ask author, film producer, and medical researcher Michael Pellico. He grew up in a busy household where both parents worked non-stop to provide for their 11 children. Pellico, as the oldest sibling, took it upon himself to entertain and enlighten his brothers and sisters with creative, escapist, values-based stories. Without even television to distract the kids, Michael held court regularly. He would continue the tradition of telling fantastic stories built around values of friendship, courage, curiosity, and hope to his niece, Sabrina. These delightful stories now form the foundation of his children's book publishing company, Moonbow Publishing. He has authored the first five books with no signs of slowing down. Listen in to learn about the best way to write children's books by this medical researcher by day, storyteller always. And, Mary, seeking meekly for direction, asked ‘how shall this be after the wont of men?' and she was shewn how, by the immediate power of God Most High, the Child should be born, holy, the Son of God; and Mary, not knowing what all this might mean to her, cried ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it to me according to Thy word.' Wayne Resnick fills in for the vacationing Bill Handel.First, he discusses the interesting lawsuit of the Carlton Dance and Fortnite. He then discusses how Russians targeted African Americans in the 2016 election. Finally, we talk about the science of growing the perfect Christmas tree.
Every winter, millions of Americans descend on farms and lots across the country with the express purpose of inspecting, and ultimately choosing from, their local selection of coniferous evergreen trees. I'm talking, of course, about Christmas tree shopping—the widely practiced pastime of publicly scrutinizing spruces, pines, and firs in search of the ideal yuletide centerpiece. Many people are practiced at picking the perfect tree.

This year, for the first time in my life, I'll be hosting my family for the holidays. And to their deep disgruntlement, we'll be celebrating it without a Christmas tree. No, this isn't some principled stance against the yuletide-industrial complex or a personal front in the war on Christmas. I'm just much more interested in an indoor evergreen interloper when its needles fall in someone else's home.

Dan Licata (Joe Pera Helps You Find the Perfect Christmas Tree) and Nick Naney (Let My People Eat) return to watch Howard Hawks's adaptation of Raymond Chandler's legendarily confusing mystery The Big Sleep.
For as long as Joe can remember his family has cut down their Christmas tree. Every year, usually the day it opens, they trek to Benjamin Tree Farm north of Waterloo, Ontario to find the tree that will decorate their house for the season. Benjamin is one of just over 2 thousand cut your own farms in Canada. According to 2011 numbers from Statistics Canada most of these farms are located in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. They would cut down their tree in late November which means the tree would be up for at least 6 weeks. Two things can happen when it's up for that long. It'll either die and start shedding needles. Or it'll start sprouting buds. During one of their traditional family trips Joe brought along a microphone and recording device to capture the sounds of the search. Photos and stories can be found on www.joepavia.com
