He co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope but walks out of the band just as they are about to break big and goes to work in a tearoom instead. He then forms The Wild Swans, the indie-band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, and Care with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, sharing a flat with a seventeen-year-old Courtney Love along the way. Marriage, fatherhood, tropical illness, and divorce follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed-guards, police escorts you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he does' t need to. Revolutionary Spirit is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards. It concludes with an exorcism of sorts as Simpson finally rids himself of the debilitating demon of psychological depression that has, from the age of nine, run like malware in the background of his life.

If Morrissey was the Oscar Wilde of the 1980s indie scene, Simpson was its William Blake; a self-destructive genius so lost in mystical visions of a new arcadia that he couldn't meet the rent. The full podcast including all songs chosen by our guest musician & writer George Paterson can be heard on Spotify ( search Over Our Garden Wall). However, if you cant access Spotify - this is a copy of all the chat from the podcast. You can of course listen to George's songs on Apple Music too, just not on this Podcast ! Apologies for this, and hopefully one day we can publish in full on Apple as we do on Spotify. After trying for 11 episodes, we finally made it to the 1980's, and it was well worth the wait! Our guest is the singer, musician, writer and part time DJ George Paterson, who recently released the acclaimed debut novel The Girl The Writer, The Writer & The Fighter. George chose 1983 as his favourite year and its a belter. In Part 1, we get tunes from some of Glasgow and Liverpool's finest ( Orange Juice and Pete Wylie among them), plus a Parissiene classic from Mr Weller. McD was posted missing for most of the recording due to a house flood minutes before we went on air - however he chips in now and again, and George delights us with great stories we can broadcast ( his dad met Elvis Presley) and great stories that we cant (saving them for the book of the podcast) .....enjoy and stay safe. BD & McD

Today's episode of Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware features one of the great characters of post-punk pop, Pete Wylie. Most famous for his band The Mighty Wah! (AKA Wah!, Wah Heat!, Shambeko!, Say Wah! etc.etc.), his most popular hit single was The Story Of The Blues which reached no. 3 in the UK charts. His excellent songwriting is only matched by his garrulous and lovable motormouth reputation, as befits his top Liverpudlian status. He is also about to support Heaven 17 on our UK tour in a few weeks time… Ladies and Gentlemen – he has a heart as big as Liverpool – it's Pete Wylie…
Mark ‘s career began in earnest in New York City in 1987 when he began working with dance music legend Arthur Baker at Shakedown Sound as an engineer, mixer, programmer, and musician. Between 1987 and 1991 Mark worked with such diverse artists as Quincy Jones, Janet Jackson, The Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed, Oingo Boingo, Dream Academy, The Fat Boys, Grayson Hugh, Pete Wylie, Dennis Brown, and the Bee Gees. After working with Prince on the ‘Graffiti Bridge’ album Mark left the world of dance music and remixing to incorporate those sensibilities into mainstream record production - a philosophy he still continues to embrace. During the 1990’s Mark worked with such diverse artists as Nina Hagen, New Order, Natalie Imbruglia, Suzanne Vega, Al Green, Big Audio Dynamite, Shawn Colvin, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Deee-Lite. In 1991 he began a ten-year association with minimalist composer Philip Glass’ New York City recording complex, The Looking Glass, where he produced, engineered, mixed, or performed on albums by The Cure, Hooverphonic, Alisha’s Attic, Duncan Sheik, Dave Navarro, as well as Glass himself. In 1996 Mark co-produced and mixed David Bowie’s ‘Earthling’ album; this marked the beginning of a seven year association with Bowie where Mark either produced, recorded, mixed, or performed on most of Bowie’s musical output. In 1999 Mark switched gears and began a three year stint as Musical Director and guitarist/bassist with Bowie, performing with him in Europe and the U.S. at such shows as the Glastonbury Festival, NetAid, the Montreux Jazz Festival, VH-1 Storytellers, The 9/11 Concert for New York, and the Area 2 Tour with Moby. He supervised the live execution of two complete Bowie albums - ‘Heathen,’ and the 1976 classic ‘Low.’ In 2005 Mark began an extended period of working in Paris, producing and mixing a number of iconic platinum artists including Louise Attaque, Les Rita Mitsuko, Emilie Simon, Alain Bashung, KYO, and Charlie Winston. Mark continues to work in New York as well as on the Continent, and is constantly looking for new musical adventures. mark-plati.com

In the third episode of our Lockdown Lowdown series, we welcome Raymond Gorman, guitarist and vocalist with The Everlasting Yeah and That Petrol Emotion into the virtual Retrosonic Podcast studio. In this thoroughly entertaining episode Raymond talks us through some of his most memorable musical moments from hearing The Beatles for the first time and impressing the girls with his dancing to T-Rex. He explains about various gigs and records that made an impact on him and his guitar playing and there are some candid stories of why he stopped playing piano, why he couldn't get into the legendary Casbah Club and how That Petrol Emotion almost signed to Creation. Along the way we learn about his encounters with Iggy Pop, Kevin Rowland, John Cooper-Clarke, Pete Wylie, Dieter Meyer of Yello, Ian McLagan and of course The Undertones. This hugely enjoyable trip down memory lane is soundtracked by some of Raymond's favourite tunes from The Beatles, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, Taste (featuring Rory Gallagher), Horslips, The Undertones, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Iggy Pop, The Sweet and David Bowie. There's also a pick of some of Raymond's own work with That Petrol Emotion and The Everlasting Yeah along with a rare snippet of his first live performance with John O'Neill. The train crash in Spain has been filling the news here…it looks terrible…it is alleged that it was going too fast….but it will all come out eventually….they showed the actual crash…very upsetting….what’s the take over there? The James Burton Concert went well….I was pleased with my set…the band were brilliant and old James was well on form…..he also backed Pete Wylie and Dave Nash….I reminded Charlie Landsborough of his Mersey Royal days and we had a good laugh….he did the last half of the show…great guy…..also on the bill were the Liverpool Ukelele Orchestra…Cliff Roberts,Vince Earl,Nick Crouch and Geoff Nugent and Dean Johnson….Billy Butler MC’d it all and was well on form. ... spent the rest of the week in Anglesey and enjoyed some great weather….Monty Lister and myself once interviewed a guy called Ian Skidmore who ran “Radio Brysiencyn” from his house….I’ve even got a R.B. tie…we have our caravan in Brynsiencyn so I made a few enquiries in the pub….apparently Ian moved on and eventually passed away…fascinating bloke though.
