Deborah Copaken is the New York Times bestselling author of several books, including Shutterbabe, The Red Book, and Between Here and April, among others. A contributing writer at The Atlantic, she was also a TV writer on Emily in Paris, a performer (The Moth, etc.), and an Emmy Award–winning news producer and photojournalist. Her photographs have appeared in Time, Newsweek, and The New York Times. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Financial Times, Observer, The Wall Street Journal, The Nation, Slate, O, the Oprah Magazine, and Paris Match, among others. Her column “When Cupid Is a Prying Journalist” was adapted for the Modern Love streaming series. Her seventh book, Ladyparts, a memoir of bodily destruction and resurrection during marital rupture, was just published by Random House. From the New York Times bestselling author of Shutterbabe comes a frank, witty, and dazzlingly written memoir of one woman trying to keep it together while her body falls apart.I'm crawling around on the bathroom floor, picking up pieces of myself. These pieces are not a metaphor. They are actual pieces.Twenty years after the publication of her iconic Shutterbabe, we remeet Deborah Copaken at her darkly comedic nadir: battered, broke, divorcing, dissected, and dying––literally––on sexism's battlefield as she deliriously scoops up what she believes to be her internal organs, which have fallen out of her body, into a glass Tupperware container before heading off to the hospital for emergency surgery . . . in an UberPool.Part cri de coeur cautionary tale, part dystopian tragicomedy, Ladyparts is Copaken's irreverent inventory of both the female body and the body politic of womanhood in America. With her journalist's eye, her novelist's heart, and her performer's sense of timing, she provides a frontline account of one woman brought to her knees by the one-two-twelve punch of divorce, solo motherhood, lack of healthcare, unaffordable childcare, shady landlords, her father's death, college tuitions, sexual harassment, corporate indifference, ageism, sexism, and just plain old bad luck. Plus seven serious illnesses, one on top of the other, which provide the book's narrative skeleton: vagina, uterus, breast, heart, cervix, brain, and lungs. She keeps bouncing back from each bum body part and finding the black humor in every setback, but in her slippery struggle to survive a steep plunge off the middle-class ladder, she is suddenly awoken to what it means to have no safety net.Turning her Harlem home into a commune to pay rent and have childcare, she trades her life as a bestselling novelist to apply for full-time corporate gigs that come with health insurance but often not scruples. She gets fired from an online health magazine for being unhealthy; laid off from a PR firm soon after rushing home to deal with a child's medical emergency; and sexually harassed out of her newspaper column, only to be grilled by the FBI when her harasser is offered a plum job in the White House.Side-splittingly funny one minute, a freak horror show the next, and quintessentially American, Ladyparts is an era-defining memoir for our time.FemTech Focus is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded to empower, equip, and bring together healthcare professionals, life-science entrepreneurs, and forward thinking investors to revolutionize women's health and wellness. Topic - Will your DNA help you find true love? Scientists can predict who you'll be attracted to and they've created an app to help you find your true love. They take a cheek swab and use the 11 genes that determine who you're attracted to and create an algorithm to make a match based on pheromones. Pheromones are the chemicals that act like hormones when they're released in your sweat. When these hormones float around, they affect the behavior of other people. That hot guy across the room picks up on your pheromones and he says, “Oh, I like the smell of your hormones and they fit mine perfectly! Wanna go out?” or something like that. The scientists created a company called Pheramor. They even have a program for couples called “We Have Chemistry” which helps you understand your connection. Using a tiny part of your DNA in combination with social media data, they create the most accurate profile. We love the science of love! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message
Si & Veronica are joined by special guest Solomon (a pal from “the company”) for a slightly retro episode 91! Holiday party season is in full swing and the pod duo has been fa la la-ing all around town. We circled back on the Lizzo Lakers game conversation to reiterate that Rihanna has indeed done similar things, but in places potentially more suitable for baring butt cheeks. With how pop culture news is going, we might have to make “Jason Derulo Junk Update” a new segment, much to Si’s chagrin. Dating apps are taking a step into science with Pheramor that uses your DNA to help you find potential mates. Si called it and Chance the Rapper just canceled his tour. We all shared some thirst over Kumail’s very honest Marvel Makeover thirst trap. Vee went “Yikes!” to a 16-year-old who potentially faked her kidnapping to get away from her “overprotective” (read: potentially abusive?) mom. Our Mini Main topic this week hops into whether you should date “in secret” or if that means you have a reason to hide your partner. When does it jump from “I’m a private person” to just not knowing if your friend is dating anyone at all? Tbh, we hop into a ton of mini mini main topics along the way, so buckle up! I had the absolute please of sitting down with a boss babe that's taking Houston by storm with her entrepreneurial fire. Dr Brittany Barreto, Co-Founder and CEO of Pheramor, is taking on a unique approach to the online dating process and shares her perspective on mental health and gratitude during this episode!
Once thought of as downright taboo, finding a date using online apps has become completely mainstream. And although some still feel it's pretty strange, the sheer numbers who use them tells the story. Those who use to warn their single friends and family of the dangers of online dating are now not only counting the number of couples they know who met on an app but also using them themselves. But as good as the websites and apps have gotten, there are still quite a few hurdles while trying to find "the one." At this point, what could possibly be done to make the apps better? More checks and balances? More algorithms? Well, the founders of Pheramor say that the answer is truly in the chemistry. Aslam Mirza, co-founder, and CEO of Pheramor, came by to explain this new approach that is designed to provide better dating matches. This exciting new dating app uses genetics and digital data to help make better connections and increase the overall efficiency of dating. Basically, the company sequences 11 specific genes that encode for your immune system. The more diverse these genes are, between two people, the more likely that they will be chemically and biologically attracted to each other. It's rooted in evolutionary biology because we are constantly trying to subconsciously find those that we're attracted to. It's such a great component to add to dating search criteria. They also made the process really simple. For starters, they send you a genetic kit in the mail that contains a buccal swab. You merely complete a quick cheek swab and mail it back and they do the rest. The DNA that is specifically linked to your immune system is extracted. This human leukocyte antigen, along with the compilation of your digital data from social media will be used to create your profile. So your DNA is combined with all of your likes, check-ins, and hashtags to help you make the best possible connections. Get the specifics on this exciting new dating app by watching the complete interview and then head over to their website if you're interested in giving it a try. Most of us have sex (or would like to), but it’s not something we talk about all that often. So how do we know what’s “normal”? That answer — just like the topic itself — is mostly personal. There have been a few articles published lately lamenting our teens’ viewing of online porn. The reality? They’re watching it, but what do we do about it? And is there anything potentially good about watching porn? The answer might surprise you. Have you heard of the Pheramor app? Break down the word, and it’s exactly what it sounds like — a cross between 23 + Me and Tinder. But can it work?
