PlaylisteBent Fabricius-Bjerre (f. 1924) Peggy Lee: The Alley Cat Song (1963)Juliette Gréco (f. 1927): Je hais les dimanches (1951)Ennio Morricone (f. 1928): Chi Mai (1971)Little Richard (f. 1932): Lucille (1957)Simeon Oliver Coxe III (f. 1938) Silver Apples: Oscillations (1968)Bill Withers (f. 1938): Lean on Me (1972)Tony Allen (f. 1940): Ise Nla (2005)Chad Stuart (f. 1941) Chad & Jeremy: Sunstroke (1968)Toots Hibbert (f.1942) Toots & The Maytals: 54-46 Was My Number (1973)Phil May (f. 1944) The Pretty Things: She’s a Lover (1970) Peter Green (f. 1946) Fleetwood Mac: Man of the World (1969)John Prine (f. 1946): Speed of the Sound of Loneliness (1986) Florian Schneider (f. 1947) Kraftwerk: Radioactivity (1975)Genesis P-Orridge (f. 1950) Throbbing Gristle: Hot on the Heels of Love (1979)Hal Willner (f. 1956) Elvis Costello: Weird Nightmare (1992)Andy Gill (f. 1956) Gang of Four: At Home He’s a Tourist (1979)David Roback (f. 1958) Mazzy Star: Fade into You (1993)Gabi Delgado-López (f. 1958) Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft/D.A.F.: Der Mussolini (1981)MF DOOM (f. 1971) Madvillain: All Caps (2004) Justin Townes Earle (født 1982, overdosis), 38: The Saint of Lost Causes (2019)

It's sometime after 10:30pm on Sunday 6th September ' 98. I'm in the artist suite at the Abbey Road Studios, London, that deceptive Victorian edifice that at some point in the mid 1960'sbecame the second Liverpool cathedral. As the first ever live performance of S.F. Sorrow fades away down these hallowed corridors the memories kick in. Twist, Shout, Help soaked deep into the brickwork. 1967, Beatles on one side, Pink Floyd on the other and with Norman Smith as fellow traveller we are incarcerated here for almost a year in Studio 2 turning a short story of mine into the first 'rock opera', S.F. Sorrow. Fuelled on acid, night bleeding into day we worked on an idea and a direction that we hoped would give us a reason for staying on and playing on in a business that had become narrow and stale. The Pretty Things - The Most Important Band You Don't Know

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Phil May from the band, The Pretty Things. One of the most influential people in rock history, and you've probably never heard of him. Phil May founded The Pretty Things with Dick Taylor in 1963. He founded the group with Dick Taylor who had previously been in Little Boy Blue And The Blue Boys with Mick Jagger. That group would eventually become The Rolling Stones and the group that Taylor and May started, The Pretty Things. The Pretty Things were born in an era in which rock music was still something risqué.  This would pose a problem for the band as they became the first British band to get busted for drug possession.  In an era in which parents were already weary about letting their kids listen to The Beatles, The Pretty Things were something parents definitely didn't want their kids to listen to. The band would undergo numerous changes throughout their history.  They had 33 members over the years and the band went through numerous artistic changes as rock music evolved between 1963 and 2019. They evolved from rhythm-and-blues to psychedelic to a more traditional ‘classic rock'. Interestingly, the band was banned from New Zealand for their corrupting influence on youths, according to May. Their first foray into psychedelic was with the world's first rock opera, S. F. Sorrow. An album that clearly influenced The Who's Pete Townsend, although he will refute that, there is a clear influence if you listen to both albums. I often remark on their influence as even superstars such as David Bowie was a huge Pretty Things fan, covering two of their songs on his album Pin Ups. When you look at The Pretty Things' catalog of work, you may start to wonder why you haven't heard of them — especially if you're savvy in classic rock.  There are a few reasons why, and we delve into those in this podcast, but it boils down to the industry focusing on commerce over innovation.  This is a natural byproduct of business as it intersects with art.  The band wanted to try new things, make great music, and not be confined to making albums that sounded like their previous releases.  This presented a problem for labels, who were focused intently on their ROI. The band remained strong and continued to release albums, even despite this.  The band did recently put on a farewell show, The Final Bow, with special guests like David Gilmour and Van Morrison. You can purchase the vinyl and DVD combo from Burning Shed. Check out the podcast to learn more about the band and one of rock-and-roll's most interesting stories!

Side 1: Hello how do you do / You might even say / Alexander / Send you with loving / Your running you and me. The story of Philippe Debarge and the Pretty Things, although not widely known, is one of the most interesting legends in the annals of rock and roll. As the story goes, Philippe De Barge was a rich, eccentric French playboy who had everything money could buy, but above all else, yearned of becoming a famous rock star. He lived in a large chateau in Saint-Tropez, France overlooking the Mediterranean Sea with his family who had made a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry. The time was early 1969 and Philippe was a huge fan of the Pretty Things, a well established and popular British band that had just released the LP 'S.F. Sorrow', which is now considered by many to be one of the finest U.K. 60s psychedelic albums ever released, but at the time was unfortunately a commercial bomb. Debarge began actively seeking out the Pretties in hopes of partnering with them on an album of his own that he would sing lead on. Due to the commercial failure of 'S.F. Sorrow', the Pretties needed cash and caught wind of the Debarge proposal. Not knowing what to expect, but in a money crunch, a few key members of the band (Phil May and Wally Waller) traveled to the South of France to meet with Debarge and feel out the unusual proposal. There they found a musically inexperienced, but genuinely enthusiastic and authentic fellow who was determined to make his fantasy a reality; and best of all, he had the cash resources necessary to make it happen! May and Waller stayed at the Debarge compound for 5-6 days and had the time of their lives eating exotic food, drinking exquisite French wines and riding around in several rare luxury autos, including a 1908 Rolls Royce. Waller recalls that, "the most difficult decision I had to make while I was there was whether to use the saltwater pool or the freshwater pool." The trip to Saint-Tropez cemented a bond between the friendly Debarge and May/Waller and plans were made to meet Debarge back in London where they would record his album; the only major stipulation to the agreement was that they would only work with original songs written by the Pretties. Although the Pretties had been recording at Abbey Road Studios, this was considered an extracurricular activity so another facility, Nova, was chosen, which at the time, was one of the first studios in London to have 8-track recording equipment. Debarge picked up the tab for everything and spared no expense in equipping the project with ample studio time and the rental of additional instruments not already owned by the band. For a Frenchman, Debarge spoke excellent English and although he had no prior experience as a vocalist, he had a natural prowess for singing lead. The Pretties of the time included Phil May (backing vocals), Wally Waller (bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion, backing vocals), Jon Povey (keyboards, drums, percussion, backing vocals), Victor Unit (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Twink (drums), who played on 4 of the record's 12 tracks. The set turned out to be nothing less than excellent and includes mostly never before released material, but also unique renditions of a few tunes ('Alexander', 'Eagle’s Son' and 'It'll Never Be Me') that were also recorded under the Pretties' pseudonym, the Electric Banana. The LP was burned to acetate but unfortunately never officially released until 2009 when May and Waller got together with UT Records/Ugly Things and re-mastered the recordings and finally issued the tracks on CD as they were originally meant to be heard. Old Man Going - The Pretty Things Brit band, The Pretty Things, created one of rock's first concept albums, released in 1968, S.F. Sorrow. This album, based on a concept by the band's guitar playing vocalist, Phil May, tells the story of Sebastian F. Sorrow from his birth through his death, and it has been speculated that Pete Townshend borrowed this idea when he wrote Tommy. (And in case you're interested, there is a live recording of S.F. Sorrow, called Resurrection, featuring David Gilmour on guitar, you can read about it here.) In Old Man Going, our friend Mr. Sorrow is, of course, near the end of his life: Old man going. Hopscotch of life will lead you to the grave. Wet faces line the street, they will not be saved. Black house youve built it will soon disappear, Another corporation dig this year. Old man going. Traffic thins as you drive slowly by, A friend wipes a flower from an eye. Streets filled with bouquets from a cloudy sky Theyll soon forget the field in which you lie. Old man going. Listen at left or here. ---- What a cool band.
