Radio Funk | Le Podcast de Funky Pearls Radio

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Funky Pearls Radio, where we dive deep into the world of funk and disco to uncover the hidden gems and legendary artists who shaped the sound of a generation. Today, we're taking you on a journey through the remarkable life and career of the legendary Hamilton Bohannon. Born on March 7, 1942, in Newnan, Georgia, USA, Hamilton Frederick Bohannon would go on to become one of the most influential figures in the world of funk and disco music. His legacy continues to inspire generations of music lovers. Hamilton Bohannon's musical journey began with a solid foundation in education. He graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Education, showcasing his commitment to the art form from the very start. Early in his career, Bohannon started as a drummer in a band that included none other than the legendary Jimi Hendrix. This was just the beginning of his extraordinary musical odyssey. In 1965, Bohannon caught the attention of none other than Stevie Wonder, who invited him to join his touring band. For two years, Bohannon played drums for Stevie, honing his skills and gaining invaluable experience. Hamilton Bohannon's drumming style impressed the decision-makers at Motown Records so much that they appointed him as the top bandleader. He was responsible for crafting live arrangements for all of Motown's top acts, leading a group known as "Bohannon and the Motown Sound." In 1972, Hamilton Bohannon signed with Dakar/Brunswick, marking the beginning of his solo career as an artist. In early 1973, he released his debut album, "Stop And Go," a precursor to the disco-funk revolution that was about to take hold. Bohannon's discography throughout the 1970s was nothing short of legendary. His albums, including "Keep On Dancin'," "Mighty Bohannon," "South African Man," "Inside Out," and "Dance Your Ass Off," became instant classics, setting dance floors on fire. Hits like "Disco Stomp" and "Foot Stompin' Music" made waves, and the infectious grooves of his music transcended borders, reaching the hearts and souls of music lovers around the world. In 1976, Bohannon signed with Mercury Records, where he continued to churn out hits. The release of "Phase II" in 1977, featuring the track "Andrea" named after his wife, marked a high point in his career. The late '70s and early '80s saw Hamilton Bohannon releasing albums like "On My Way," "Cut Loose," "Too Hot To Hold," and "Music In The Air." His music evolved, incorporating jazz elements, as heard in tracks like "Thoughts and Wishes." Bohannon's versatility as a musician shone through as he collaborated with various vocalists, including Liz Lands and Altrinna Grayson, delivering memorable R&B chart hits. Hamilton Bohannon's final solo album, "It's Time To Jam," was released in 1990, capping off a remarkable career that spanned decades. Even in the new millennium, Bohannon's talents remained in demand. He composed songs for artists like Mary J. Blige and Governor and even worked with his son, Bohannon II, keeping the funk alive and well. Hamilton Bohannon's contributions to music were immeasurable, and his influence on the funk and disco genres will forever be celebrated. In 2009, he released an audio book, "Bohannon Speaks from the Beginning," sharing his incredible journey with the world. Sadly, on April 24, 2020, the music world lost a true legend as Hamilton Bohannon passed away. But his legacy lives on through his timeless music, which continues to move and inspire us. And that, dear listeners, concludes our exploration of the extraordinary life and career of Hamilton Bohannon, a funk and disco pioneer whose music will keep us dancing for generations to come. Thank you for joining us on Funky Pearls Radio, where the groove never stops. Stay tuned for more funk-filled adventures.Hébergé par Ausha. Tucker's DJ Mixtape Podcast

Boogie (genre): during the 1970s, the term “boogie” described music from the disco and post-disco subcultures. In the 1980s, the term was revitalized in London to refer to a type of African-American dance/funk music. Boogie had a large underground following in London's nightclub scene due to a lack of mainstream radio support. Boogie records were often imported from the U.S. and sometimes labeled as “electro-funk” or “disco-funk.” Although the word “boogie” was initially used to describe disco records, it became more popular as “disco” gained negative connotations. “Boogie” originally appeared in funk, soul, R&B, and disco music from the 1970s, with notable examples including “Jungle Boogie” (1974) and “Boogie Wonderland” (1979). Kashif is considered to be one of the pioneers of boogie music, with his 1983 single “I Just Gotta Have You (Lover Turn Me On)” helping to define the early 1980s boogie sound. Other popular boogie tracks from the 1980s include “Wake Up” (Hamilton Bohannon), “Act Like You Know” (Fat Larry's Band), and “Boogie's Gonna Get Ya” (Rafael Cameron). Boogie artists in the 1980s began experimenting with heavy bass, paving the way for the roots of house music. Hamilton Bohannon, D-Train, and Sharon Redd were among the artists who contributed to this new sound. Some producers, like François Kevorkian and Larry Levan, polished and extended the limits of urban-oriented boogie, while others like Arthur Baker and John “Jellybean” Benitez drew inspiration from European and Japanese technopop music. The latter approach paved the way for electro, and subsequently, freestyle music.

Bside Incoming: The Mole This week's episode of Bside Incoming has been placed in the reliable hands of Canadian DJ and Producer, avid collector of records, label boss of Maybe Tomorrow, and man of musical passion: Colin de la Plante AKA The Mole. Often to be found digging blindly into uncharted subterranean regions on the impassioned pursuit of novel sounds, The Mole endeavours to return to the surface with buried treasures for the keen and willing ears of his audience. Beyond his reputation as a top class live act with an infectious enthusiasm behind the decks, there is much to be said for his prowess as a producer, notably his involvement with Units & Measurements, The Modern Deep Left Quartet, and most recently with his Deadbeat Meets the Mole release on BLKRTZ. Go check out his discogs/bandcamp pages for more: https://themole.bandcamp.com/ https://www.discogs.com/artist/111868-The-Mole With a career spanning 20 years: originating in Vancouver and currently based in Berlin; releases on such prestigious labels as Ostgut Ton, Perlon, Musique Risquée and Internasjonal; worldwide festival appearances at Mutek, Houghton, Sandbox and Outline; and an ever longer list of collaborative musical projects… we are certainly very excited for Colin to guide us through some of his most cherished Bsides. Starting out with a focus on slow burning percussion, and left field jazz, before picking up the pace with some smooth electronica, feel good funky beats and some powerful disco. A healthy dose of legendary artists: Patrick Adams, Billy Preston, Marvin Gaye and Hamilton Bohannon; lightly sprinkled with soulful global sounds throughout and an excellent history lesson for each record. Ever tasteful in his selection, and always keeping us on our toes… The Mole keeps on giving! Enjoy!

In this week's episode, Mark, Barney & Jasper talk extensively about one of the great record labels — a hallowed home to such groundbreaking acts as Jimmy Cliff, Nick Drake, Roxy Music, (Bob Marley and) the Wailers and, yes, U2. Listening to clips from John Tobler's 1989 audio interview with Island founder Chris Blackwell, RBP's power trio reflect on what made the label such a powerhouse for non-mainstream genres like folk and reggae. Blackwell talks of its transformation after 1967, as well as his first encounter with Marley in 1972.A neat segue via Lenny Kaye's 1975 overview of the label leads "the team" into a discussion of Sparks, the American art pop duo who've just released their new album, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip. Mark & Barney reminisce about the Mael brothers' Island years in the '70s, commencing with Kimono My House and its astonishing hit single 'This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us'. We stay in the '70s, moreover, as the RBP troika considers great Disc pieces — about Lou Reed and Chinnichap — by the splendidly-named Ray Fox-Cumming.Mark rounds matters off by talking us through new library pieces about Santana, Hamilton Bohannon, John Fahey (1977), Joni Mitchell and N.W.A., while Jasper adds his tuppenceworth on articles about British folk institution Topic Records, the death of the album and Busta Rhymes. Compromise! And the b-side is, well, very jamtastic. Classics IV [41:21] a side: "Spooky" b side: "Poor People" Imperial Records 66259 1967 That is one cool spooky groove. Fine cover versions can also be heard by Dusty Springfield (https://youtu.be/Fola80rQop4), Jazz Butcher (https://youtu.be/wFielGAVxUk), and Daniel Ash (https://youtu.be/5NYQ34Zf7Lo). Hamilton Bohannon - Bohannon's Beat Edit Part III By Petko Turner Edit Here >> https://hypeddit.com/track/sc/myriqj Hamilton Frederick Bohannon (born March 7, 1942), often credited and known professionally simply as Bohannon, is an American percussionist, band leader, songwriter and record producer, who was one of the leading figures in 1970s disco music. He was born in Newnan, Georgia, and learned the drums at school. He began playing in local bands, one of which featured guitarist Jimi Hendrix, before graduating from Clark College, Atlanta with a degree in music and secondary education.[2][3] After a brief period as a schoolteacher, he was recruited in 1964 as drummer in 13-year-old Stevie Wonder's touring band. He moved to Detroit in 1967, where he was employed by Motown as the leader and arranger of Bohannon & The Motown Sound, who provided backing for many of the label's top acts on tour, including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops and others. Much of his music has been widely sampled, most notably on Chicago DJ/producer Paul Johnson's 1999 hit "Get Get Down" which heavily sampled Bohannon's "Me and the Gang." Other musicians who have used samples of his music include Jay Z, Digable Planets, and Snoop Dogg. His name was also repeatedly invoked in the Tom Tom Club song "Genius of Love." His composition "Ooh!" was included on Mary J. Blige's album Love & Life in 2003. Download for free on The Artist Union
