Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Ron DeFore, Son of TV and Screen Star, Don DeFore About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Ron DeFore, is the son of one of Hollywood's most beloved and respected actors, Don DeFore, who appeared in dozens of great movies, including “A Guy Named Joe”, “30 Seconds Over Tokyo”, “The Male Animal”, “Ramrod”, “Romance on the High Seas”, “The Facts of Life”, and one of the great Christmas classics, “It Happened on 5th Avenue”.   He worked with everyone from Spencer Tracy and Lionel Barrymore to John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Olivia de Havilland, Claudette Colbert, Lucille Ball, Judy Holiday – and that's just scratching the surface.   On television, he became a household name, first as “Mr. Thornberry”, or “Thorny”, the next-door neighbour on “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”, earning him a 1954 Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor.  And then, he became “Mr. Baxter”, affectionately referred to as “Mr. B.”, for 4 seasons, on the classic sitcom, “Hazel”, co-starring the wonderful Shirley Booth.    Don DeFore's acting was seamless, because he was projecting his genuine, regular-guy personality, that made him endearing, enduring and beloved by his millions of fans.   But there was much more to this man than his acting career.   He was a loving husband to big band singer Marion Holmes, and a devoted father to his 5 children.  He owned a popular BBQ restaurant at Disneyland.   He served on the Board of the Screen Actors Guild, and was President of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and he orchestrated the first nationally televised Emmy Awards show in 1955.  In 1965 he co-authored a book with his sister Penny DeFore entitled, “With All My Love”, about her experiences working in a Korean orphanage.   He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.   He was part of the US delegation to the 1969 International Film Festival in Moscow.  And after getting to know Ronald Reagan on the set of a movie they made together, he became heavily involved in President Reagan's political career, and was on the Presidential Advisory Committee to the Peace Corps.    And if that weren't enough, Don DeFore was a very gifted furniture maker.  Our guest has had a remarkable life himself.  He started out in the television industry and then moved on to an impressive career in Washington, first in the Peace Corps, then as part of President Reagan's administration, and then as co-founder of one of the largest and most respected public affairs firms in Washington.   He's here to talk about his wonderful book, “Growing Up in Disneyland:  Memoirs of Stage, TV and Movie Star Don DeFore, and His Son's Exciting Life in a Celebrity Family and Beyond”.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.defore.net/https://www.facebook.com/groups/DonDeForehttps://www.facebook.com/ron.deforehttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1180199459597906https://www.youtube.com/@rhd4444 #ron.defore   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Vedanta investing R7bn in Gamsberg 'green' zinc expansion

The board of directors of Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) has approved a R7-billion investment into the Gamsberg Phase 2 expansion project in the Northern Cape, which will double the mine and plant capacity from four-million tons to eight-million tons a year. In metal terms, it will increase output from 300 000 t to half-a-million tons of metal a year. This will make VZI and South Africa the largest zinc producer in Africa, says VZI executive director and CFO Pushpender Singla. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Vedanta is committed to producing ‘green' zinc from this expansion to make the province emission free and the company is at an advanced stage of locking in a renewable energy contract, to ensure greenness and decarbonisation. Singla, who spoke to Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview, says construction of the project will take 18 to 22 months and bring significant socioeconomic benefits to the Northern Cape, including 2 000 to 2 500 jobs during construction and 800 to 1 000 permanent jobs upon completion. This is in addition to the 2 700 people already employed at the mine. It will form part of the Namakwa Special Economic Zone, which government is expected to approve soon, and contribute to secondary industries and downstream beneficiation. Apart from the Gamsberg Phase 2 investment, which starts immediately, VZI last year also approved a magnetite project investment of around R600-million. “We are trying to convert our tailings into one of the best quality high quality magnetite. So, on the one side we will reduce the impact on the environment, on the other side we will create another product line and employment for another 250 people in the Northern Cape,” said Singla. Of the company's R21-billion investment pledge of three years ago, it has reached beyond R12-billion investment level. Phase 2 will require 18 months of construction and three months of commissioning and ramp-up. “So, 21 months from now, we'll have first production,” says Singla. “In terms of funding, we always believe that we must earn the money to invest the money, so our first focus is to fund this project from internal funds. But we always want to ensure that we have enough flexibility, so all the South African banks, together with RMB and Nedbank, are working closely with us on this project,” he adds. A prefeasibility study is under way for the setting up of a smelter and refining in Namibia remains on the cards, with the cost of power being key. Underground and opencast mining activities currently require 45 MW and Phase 2 will require another 25 MW, taking the complex's total power requirement to 70 MW. A smelter would require another 130 MW, which would take the requirement to a new total of 200 MW. Logistics to the Port of Saldanha, which is 600 km away, are described as being very good. In the absence of smelting, concentrate is moved to the Middle East, China and Europe, with transport having to be expanded to match growth. Vedanta Limited is reportedly the world's sixth largest diversified natural resources company and the largest natural resources company in India. With a market capitalisation of $20-billion, Vedanta Limited operates in India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Namibia, Australia and Dubai. BIODIVERSITY AGREEMENT Unique succulent Karoo biodiversity covers 83 000 km2 of arid South Africa and Namibia and contains the largest number of succulents for a region of this size. Conservation and nursery work have thus been under way to ensure that all plants are replaced during the rehabilitation process. VZI, which has signed a biodiversity agreement with government, prides itself on being fully compliant. Vedanta Group chairperson Anil Agarwal is an adviser to President Cyril Ramaphosa on the Presidential Advisory Committee on Investments in South Africa. In July 2015, Mining Weekly reported on the first blast taking place to signal the start of VZI's Phase 1 at Gamsberg. Phase 1 involved the development of the 250 000 t/y opencas...

Kevin Robert Frost joins Purposely Podcast to share his very personal leadership story in the fight against HIV. Kevin has been the CEO of amfAR, The American Foundation for AIDS Research, since 2007, first joining the organisation in September 1994. Kevin is fully committed to the work he does, and vividly remembers the dark days when people were dying in large numbers from AIDS in New York and other parts of the world. Kevin personally knew some of these men and still remembers the horrible stigma caused by fear and bigotry. Fast forward to today and an HIV diagnosis is less likely to be a death sentence thanks to organisations like amfAR and committed, passionate leaders like Kevin. People diagnosed with HIV are less likely to suffer thanks to combination therapies, preventative medicine, and different attitudes towards sexuality. Kevin does stress, however, that things have not changed for everyone and unfortunately in many countries HIV and homophobia can still mean a death sentence. Kevin talks openly about his own journey and why he decided to do something meaningful to fight AIDS and give hope to people diagnosed with HIV. He also discusses his parent's reaction to his mission and about coming out as a gay man. We talk about the current Coronavirus pandemic and Kevin's frustration that lessons learnt from the fight against HIV have not saved the world from more pain and suffering. Kevin's sense of mission is incredibly strong, and you can hear his passion and commitment for his life's work over three decades. Kevin's amazing career includes: - February 2010, appointed by President Obama to the Presidential Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS (PACHA), which is charged with providing guidance and recommendations to the administration on the U.S. government's domestic and international HIV/AIDS prevention and research programs. - Served as a member of the international advisory committee for the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, - Member of the Scientific Committee for the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada, in August 2006. H - Served on the advisory panels for three U.S. Food and Drug Administration hearings on a new drug application for Chiron Corporation's ganciclovir implant; a new drug application for Gilead's cidofovir; and a review of the application for fomivirsen sodium. - Published in The Lancet, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, Journal of AIDS (JAIDS), Journal of Infectious Diseases, and The AIDS Reader. As vice president, clinical research and prevention programs at amfAR and later, vice president, global initiatives, Kevin worked extensively in Asia, where he facilitated the development of amfAR's TREAT Asia program. This network of more than 50 hospitals, community clinics, NGOs, and healthcare facilities works together with civil society in 17 countries to build the capacity necessary for scaling up treatment efforts in the region. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

I'm glad to return to the COVIDCalls microphone after a much-needed break.  It was one that, quite honestly, I really needed—but it's nothing compared to the break that nurses and docs and teachers and other essential workers across the USA and around the world need.  The stories coming from full emergency departments and overcrowded, unvaccinated, classrooms in the United States are so distressing—I wish everyone could find some time and some peace in the midst of all this. I want to offer my sincere gratitude to guest hosts Kim Fortun, James Adams, and Jacob Steere-Williams for producing and hosting some lively and insightful COVIDCalls discussions while I was away.  And, as always, nothing is possible without COVIDCalls superteam members Bucky Stanton and Shivani Patel.  Thank you all.
