The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 4: A new poll from The New York Times/Sienna College shows that regardless of race, age, or gender more voters believe that former President Donald Trump's policies benefited them than did President Joe Biden's policies—40% to 18%. Perhaps most concerning for Biden, 43% of voters claim Biden's policies actively hurt them personally—only 25% said the same about Trump. You can read the full article, from Ruth Igielnik and Camille Baker, here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/04/us/politics/trump-biden-policies-help-hurt.html While appearing on MSNBC's Morning Joe, University of Maryland Professor Thomas Schaller claimed that white rural voters are “racist, xenophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-gay” and pose a “threat” to the country. While speaking to the press on Tuesday, President Joe Biden was asked if he is concerned by recent polling data suggesting he is trailing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the general election. Biden disagreed with the statement, insisting that most polls have him leading. However, the most notable polls from the last week and a half show: YouGov/CBS News (Trump +4), New York Times/Sienna College (Trump +5), Morning Consult (Trump +2), Morning Consult (Biden +1), Wall Street Journal (Trump +5). Super Tuesday: Tonight, there are 854 Republican delegates—in 15 states and 1 territory—up for grabs. 1,215 delegates are needed in order for a candidate to officially win the party's presidential nomination. Donald Trump currently leads Nikki Haley in the delegate race 273 to 43. While appearing on Fox News with Maria Bartiromo, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) implored Senators to listen to the Republican base when selecting its next leader. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recently announced that he would be stepping down from his leadership position at the end of the term in November. Though, he does not plan to resign from the Senate. McConnell, now 82-years-old, has served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 40-years and has been the leader of the Senate Republican Conference since 2007. Last year, social media influencer “Meatball” was arrested for her participation in wide-spread looting in Philadelphia. Dayja “Meatball” Blackwell, who has nearly 500,000 followers on TikTok, was charged with 6 felonies at the time. And she's back in the news!
The Garden welcomes in Jon F. White of Crecganford. Professor White might be the foremost expert in Indo-European myths and comparative mythology. We discuss certain cognates, themes, and distinctions in mythology. Jon also graces us with something that may just well be the original Indo-European creation story. Questions include: why is Odin so complex? Why don't we have much for certain information on religions like those of the Slavics, Celts, Phoenicians, Minoans, and others. Do administrative States lead to administrative gods? Is there any comparison to Troy and Eden? Is the Bible a giant departure or just a new coat of paint on older themes? There's a lot packed into this hour. Best of all: Jon has agreed to visit us again. Yes, he won a timeshare in the Garden of Doom.

Double-digit inflation during WWI, and then again in the '70s! Thankfully, Professor White explains that in the past high inflation looked like a Christmas tree, meaning that it came down just as fast as it had shot up. During our podcast conversation, Professor White answered the following questions: Is inflation due to issues of supply chain or supply of money? What was inflation like during the previous major pandemic, the Spanish flu? How did the Fed handle inflation during the Great Depression? What do the famous Nixon tapes reveal about his handling of inflation? How did Volker tame inflation? What did Milton Friedman and Ben Bernanke say about the Great Depression and the Fed's handling of inflation? Is fiat money terrible for inflation? In this episode, Prof. Lawerence White, Dept. of Economics, George Mason University, tells us about the history of inflation, banking and money. He has been a visiting lecturer at the Swiss National Bank and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. His forthcoming book is Better Money, Fiat, Gold or Bitcoin. I hope you enjoy this episode and gain some perspective about the history of U.S. inflation. The Lowy Institute hosted one of Australia’s most provocative public commentators, Professor Hugh White. Lowy Institute Senior Fellow Richard McGregor chaired a discussion on Professor White’s new book, How to Defend Australia. Over the past decade, Professor White has set the agenda of Australia’s China debate. This book will do the same for defence policy. Hugh White AO is Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University and author of The China Choice and the Quarterly Essay 39, Power Shift. He has served as an intelligence analyst with the Office of National Assessments, as a senior adviser to Defence Minister Kim Beazley and to Prime Minister Bob Hawke, and as a senior official in the Department of Defence, where from 1995 to 2000 he was Deputy Secretary for Strategy and Intelligence. Richard McGregor, Lowy Institute Senior Fellow, is a leading expert on China’s political system and Australia’s relations with Asia. He is the author of The Party: The Secret World of China’s Communist Rulers and Asia’s Reckoning: China, Japan and the Fate of US Power in the Pacific Century. His Lowy Institute Paper, Xi Jinping: The Backlash, will be published in late July.
We have no problem thinking mathematically about four-dimensional space. Where a 3-d cube has 8 vertices, a 4-d hypercube has 16 vertices. Where a cube has 6 faces, like a dice, a 4-d hypercube has 24 faces. The problem is imagining what that actually looks like. We live in a three-dimensional world. We can’t see a fourth dimension. We simply can’t imagine what a 4-D world would look like. However, that doesn’t mean that lots and lots of people haven’t tried to, in a huge variety of ways: mathematicians and physicists, philosophers and theologians, occultists and mystics, artists, architects, designers, authors. The fourth dimension, when you start to look for it, is everywhere. On this week’s episode I’m joined by Professor Christopher White who has just written a book with a fascinating central premise: in the U.S, and in many parts of the Western world, the number of people identifying as Christian has been consistently falling, for about 30 years now. Yet the number of people who describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious”, people who still believe in a god of some sort, has remained very high. So, if people believe in spirits or angels, in God or life after death, in heaven or another world of some sort, but not in traditional religious institutions, how are they constructing these supernatural worlds? Well, in many ways, as Professor White explains, they are relying on science and maths. On other dimensions, multiverses, quantum entanglement, string theory, parallel universes. There is, and has been for well over a century now, a type of scientific supernatural. For links, pictures, full transcripts and more, head to wttepodcast.com (http://wttepodcast.com/4d)
Jonathan W. White, an associate professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University, is the co-author of “Our Little Monitor”: The Greatest Invention of the Civil War (Kent State University Press, 2018). Ever since their famous naval encounter in 1862, the Monitor and Merrimack (a.k.a., C.S.S. Virginia) have been part of American Civil War lore. In this work White and his co-author, Anna Gibson Holloway, investigate the history of one of the most popular elements of the American Civil War: the Monitor ironclad ship. The ironclads were innovative combat ships, which sat at the waterline and could prove effective against the then-dominant wooden-hulled ships of the world’s navies. Although other nations had designed ironclads, the U.S.S. Monitor’s encounter with the C.S.S. Virginia on March 9, 1862 was the first test of ironclads in combat. In this interview Professor White discusses the design and development of the Monitor, the famous Battle of Hampton Roads, the conditions under which crews served, and the popular memory of the Monitor from the Civil War through today. The Dead is rich in music from Italian opera to popular folk songs. Music and song is the soundtrack to the dinner party while the conversation around the table shares stories of Enrico Caruso and the music halls of the city. The story’s epiphany hangs on a memory provoked by a song ‘The Lass of Aughrim’. Professor Harry White unpacks the power of music in Joyce’s narrative and we discover how central a force music and song was in the author’s life. Professor White sees the story itself as an operatic composition. We visit the National Library to see sheet music of the day and from the UCD folklore collection we hear Elizabeth Cronin’s version of ‘The Lass of Aughrim’ which gives us a sense of how the song sounded in 1904. Singer and musician Noel O’Grady, who performs the music of Joyce, shares his rendition of ‘The Lass of Aughrim’ as he plays the part of Bartell D’Arcy and re-creates that moment which froze Gretta on the stairs of 15 Usher’s Island.

A recording of Professor Sarah White’s inaugural lecture that took place on 25 April 2018. In the lecture, Professor White argues we need to make relationships and morality central to thinking about wellbeing, and considers implications for policy and practice.
On Wednesday, April 25, 2012, the Hayek Program hosted a panel discussion on Hayek Program Distinguished Senior Fellow Lawrence H. White’s book, ‘The Clash of Economic Ideas: The Great Policy Debates and Experiments of the Last Hundred Years.’ This book interweaves the economic history of the last hundred years with the history of economic doctrines to understand how contrasting economic ideas have originated and developed over time to take their present forms. The discussion was chaired by Hayek Program Director Peter Boettke and included comments by Douglas Irwin, Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, and Perry Mehrling, Professor of Economics at Barnard College. Professor White begins the panel with a discussion of the main contributions of his book, which is followed by comments from Professor Irwin and Professor Mehrling, respectively. Professor White concludes with a response to his commenters.

Stephen White‘s Understanding Russian Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2011) begins simply enough: “Russia is no longer the Soviet Union.” While this is a well-known fact, the details of Russia’s postcommunist transition — the emergence of a party system and presidential government, as well as the dismantling of the planned economy and construction of modern political communication — have rarely been as consciously and seamlessly fit into the setting of Russia’s immediate present. Stephen White’s ambitious text tracks the most significant developments in Russia’s post-Soviet formation, and more importantly plugs those events back into the framework of today, equipping readers with the context required for a deeper reading of contemporary Russian politics. Understanding Russian Politics tackles all the biggest components of Russian statecraft and social transformation over the past twenty-five years. In my interview with Professor White, we discussed topics as current as President Medvedev’s 2012 legal initiative to liberalize political party registration in Russia, as well as the role the previous winter’s street demonstrations played in prompting such reforms offered by the Kremlin. In this context, White addressed the constitutional legacy of Yeltsin’s super presidential state, and explained why Putin’s economic policies have deviated from the extreme market liberalism of Russia in the early 1990s. Our conversation finished on the subject of Russian foreign policy and domestic interest groups, highlighting the roles that competing schools of thought play in policymaking today.
