Into a revolving door of senior pastors, Ken Shigematsu arrived to lead a struggling community in Vancouver, BC by the name of Tenth Church in 1996. After over two decades, Ken is still at the helm, having led Tenth to become one of the largest and most diverse city centre churches in Canada. But you'll notice, Ken doesn't exude an ambitious, pioneering spirit that you might attach to a story like that. He's more of a soft-spoken, thoughtful contemplative who is seeking to see the Kingdom come in and through his life. In this conversation, Jason and Ken chat largely about themes from his new book Now I Become Myself - touching on emotions that can be destructive for pastors like envy and shame. We hope this conversation gives you a vision for how Jesus wants to meet you in and beyond those very feelings. Bio | Ken Shigematsu is the Senior Pastor of Tenth Church in Vancouver, BC, one of the largest and most diverse city-centre churches in Canada. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal awarded to Canadians in recognition for their outstanding contribution to the country. Before entering pastoral ministry, he worked for the Sony Corporation in Tokyo. Ken is the author of the award-winning bestsellers ‘God in My Everything' and ‘Survival Guide for the Soul.' Ken lives in Vancouver with his wife, Sakiko, and their son, Joey. Thanks to the Canadian Bible Society for supporting this episode. Learn more about their Bible Course here. I'm a Blubrry affiliate, but that's not the only reason I'm telling you this. I've been using Blubrry Podcasting as my hosting service for my podcast for years and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. They give great customer service, you're in complete control of your own podcast, you can run it from your own website, and it just takes a lot of the work out of podcasting for me. I find for that reason that it's a company that I can get behind 100% and say, “You should try this.” Try Blubrry. It doesn't require a long-term contract, and it's just a great company, period. It also has free technical support by email, video, and phone, so you can get a human being there. Isn't that nice? If you want to podcast, try out Blubrry. No long-term contract, excellent distribution, and great technical support, too, by email, video, and on the phone. I've included an affiliate link on this blog. Download a copy of the PDF transcript of this episode here. Debbi (00:12): Hi everyone. My guest today has written fiction and nonfiction. Among his achievements, he's climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with his son and written a book about it called Mount Kilimanjaro and Beyond: A Life-Changing Journey. I love that title. He's also written a travel memoir called I Guess We Missed the Boat. In 2014, he began work on his Marcie Kane thriller collection consisting of five books. He recently released a second in a new series of books, I assume it's a series, featuring his protagonist Jake Scott. Among his many accolades, he's received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for Philanthropy. Impressive. I'm pleased to have with me Barry Finlay. Hi Barry. How are you doing today? Barry (01:49): I'm doing well. How are you doing? Debbi (01:51): Fine, thank you. It's great to have you on. Thank you for being here. Barry (01:55): Thanks. Thanks for having me. Debbi (01:57): Oh, I'm glad. I'm thankful that you could wait to be on . I have people on the waiting list now. It's so ridiculous. I can't believe it. Barry (02:06): Yeah, I think I booked in March, I think. Debbi (02:09): Yeah. Well, that's doing relatively well compared to some people. Yeah, he would not believe so. Tell us about Jake Scott and why you decided to write a series about him. Barry (02:22): Well, Jake Scott is kind of an old-fashioned, affable, easygoing individual. He is a former reporter and he stumbles across crimes that he just can't resist poking his nose into and trying to find out what happened. It's a mystery series. The first one's called Searching for Truth, and I decided to write this one. I wrote another series first called the Marcie Kane Thriller Collection, and the first book in that series, The Vanishing Wife had a protagonist called Mason Scott. And Mason Scott was an easygoing accountant, and I kinda liked the character, but I also had a character in the first book called Marcie Kane. And so I had a choice of continuing on with Marcie or continue on with Jake, and I decided to continue on with Marcie, but at the same time, I really like Jake. So after writing five books in the Marcie Kane thriller collection, I kind of reinvented sorry, I let,
We are bombarded by negativities and by what people set and believed about the standard of beauty. When we look in the mirror, we usually want to pick out all the things we hate about ourselves, which makes us feel like we're ugly and we're not enough. But are we not really enough? Kelly Falardeau, a burn survivor speaker, author and coach , will make you realize you can still be beautiful even you don't like a part of your body. Yes, you can love yourself without having to love everything. Always remember, You Are Beautiful!“We don't have to be flawless. We don't have to be perfect in order to be beautiful..You can have freckles, and you'll be gorgeous. You can have a scar like me, and you'll be gorgeous. We're just so hard on ourselves, and we judge ourselves so harshly.” - Kelly FalardeauAbout our Guest:Kelly Falardeau is a burn survivor since the age of 2 on 75% of her body. “We don't always see the value in what we do and that makes it really difficult sometimes for us to move forward, so we just have to know that we are making a difference. ” — Kelly Falardeau Topics ranging from having tragedies in life like being burned when she was two years old, losing a baby, being diagnosed with precancer, witnessing and having a divorce to her many successes in life. Kelly Falardeau created a path to go from a near-death experience to her huge success in life. During her school years, she had been bullied, teased, and called the Scarface girl. Admittedly, it was a hard process for her but that didn't hinder her from being able to accept and let go. One of the most touching and heartfelt stories she shared with us in this episode was conversing with a group of teenagers where one young man confessed that he had been contemplating suicide but because of the girl beside him and Kelly's speech he chose life! She considers her path as a gift, if she hasn't lived through her life tragedies, she wouldn't have been led to that moment when she was able to inspire that young man to live. She shared that she doesn't live in her past because a lot of people live in their past, and if you keep living in your past, it just holds you back. Kelly emphasized that is just a matter of taking a leap of faith. We just have to trust that are we capable and learn the lessons along the way. This is the only way we will see how far we can go and what can accomplish. Wellness Nuggets: ● See tragic experiences as a gift to inspire others ● Listen to certain songs that will empower you ● Instead of being triggered to anger, be triggered into empathy ● Remove yourself from the negative energy that we take personally, because it's not about us, it's about them We invite you to ignite the Wellness Warrior in YOU! Doug Vincent is, among many other things, a Charter Member and Past President of the Woodstock-Oxford Rotary Club in Canada. He has traveled the world on Rotary humanitarian aid activities and is a Rotary Representative to the United Nations As a third generation graduate of his family's successful farm equipment business, he is now an International Advisor to family business corporations, with a focus on harmony and communications in family business. Doug is an honorary "Colonel" in the Philippine National Police, recognizing his role promoting global understanding, brotherhood & world peace. He has been recognized with several Leadership and Appreciation Awards for his work, including a President's Citation and the prestigious Service Above Self award, among many others. Most recently he was recognized as a distinguished Canadian with a special Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal. Doug is often called Rotary's "Roving Ambassador." He is a kind, caring and compassionate man and the stories he tells in this episode are absolutely priceless. Among the many key things that stood out from my time with Doug include: 1. Saying Yes To Life – Doug gives a powerful account of what led to his decision to say “yes” to more global engagements, and what caused him to make a commitment to himself of something he would do within 30 days of getting home after being unwell in another part of the world. 2. Learn To Do By Doing – As Doug described his start in his own branch of the family business, “Rather than me going into a big business when I didn’t have big business skills, this allowed me to start from grassroots small business. And then my business skills grew at the same time as the business grew.” He shares many valuable insights along these lines, a must-listen for aspiring entrepreneurs and those looking for a succession plan for their existing business 3. Understanding the Difference One Person Can Make – Doug recounts a moving story near the end of our discussion that truly gave me pause for consideration. He observed that, “I get really, really, really frustrated when people don’t see the difference they could make in a very simple way.” Each and every one of us has the opportunity to make a positive difference. And for each one of us who does, the bigger the collective difference we all make. ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises

In solitude, we not only encounter ourselves and who we are before God, we also encounter the voices of others. We can be met with fear, regret, and external voices that may be challenging to distinguish from God or ourselves. Is this why solitude can be so challenging? How can we tell the difference between God's voice and the voice of the enemy? Why does solitude and silence facilitate this encounter with our enemies? In this conversation, John Mark Comer interviews Ken Shigematsu. Ken is the senior pastor of Tenth Church in Vancouver, BC, one of the largest and most diverse city-center churches in Canada.
