Canada has experienced a disruptive start to 2025, with PM Justin Trudeau stepping down as Liberal leader, prompting a leadership campaign and a prorogued parliament . With a federal election looming, Canadians, among other problems, are facing affordability issues and to top it off, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 25-percent tariffs on a wide range of imports from Canada and 10-percent tariffs on oil and gas. Those US tariffs were set to begin Feb 4, but have been delayed by at least 30 days as the countries work together on border security and trade imbalance. However, for many Canadians, the potential for a trade war between two longtime allies continues to fuel anger, despair and confusion over what may be coming next. The speaker will try to make sense of it all, while analyzing the response from governments and political leaders including Liberal leadership contenders. Speaker: Shannon Phillips Shannon brings over two decades of experience in public policy, governance, and leadership in energy and the environment to her role as a partner at Meredith Boessenkool & Phillips. Her experience includes serving as the Minister of Environment and Parks and Minister Responsible for the Climate Change Office in Rachel Notley's government, where she was responsible for climate policy, conservation expansion, and Indigenous reconciliation efforts. She also established Alberta's first standalone Ministry for the Status of Women. From 2015-19, Shannon was the driving force behind Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan. Phillips led the coal phase-out, renewable energy expansion, and energy efficiency programs that boosted Alberta's GDP and created jobs across the province. Shannon also represented Alberta on the national and international stage, including leading delegations to UN climate conferences in Paris and Marrakech. Phillips won three elections as a progressive woman candidate in Southern Alberta – an accomplishment most would have dismissed as far-fetched just a decade ago. She is an experienced and successful campaigner, organizer and grassroots leader. She continues to focus on mentorship and training of a new generation of activists and candidates. Shannon is a strong communicator in both of Canada's official languages, a skill that serves her well in her extensive policy and advocacy work on the national and international stage. Deeply committed to her community, Shannon continues to strengthen her relationship with the Blackfoot people of southern Alberta and is a Blackfoot Headdress holder and recipient of a Blackfoot name. In addition to her work in the community, Shannon serves as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Political Science at the University of Lethbridge and was recognized as a YWCA Woman of Distinction in 2017. Shannon enjoys spending time with her two sons outdoors, particularly in the Canadian Rockies.

“We don't always see the value in what we do and that makes it really difficult sometimes for us to move forward, so we just have to know that we are making a difference. ” — Kelly Falardeau Topics ranging from having tragedies in life like being burned when she was two years old, losing a baby, being diagnosed with precancer, witnessing and having a divorce to her many successes in life. Kelly Falardeau created a path to go from a near-death experience to her huge success in life. During her school years, she had been bullied, teased, and called the Scarface girl. Admittedly, it was a hard process for her but that didn't hinder her from being able to accept and let go. One of the most touching and heartfelt stories she shared with us in this episode was conversing with a group of teenagers where one young man confessed that he had been contemplating suicide but because of the girl beside him and Kelly's speech he chose life! She considers her path as a gift, if she hasn't lived through her life tragedies, she wouldn't have been led to that moment when she was able to inspire that young man to live. She shared that she doesn't live in her past because a lot of people live in their past, and if you keep living in your past, it just holds you back. Kelly emphasized that is just a matter of taking a leap of faith. We just have to trust that are we capable and learn the lessons along the way. This is the only way we will see how far we can go and what can accomplish. Wellness Nuggets: ● See tragic experiences as a gift to inspire others ● Listen to certain songs that will empower you ● Instead of being triggered to anger, be triggered into empathy ● Remove yourself from the negative energy that we take personally, because it's not about us, it's about them We invite you to ignite the Wellness Warrior in YOU! At the age of 2, Kelly Falardeau was severely disfigured with third-degree burns to over 80% of her body. Her life was forever changed in that moment. It led to numerous surgeries throughout her life. Because her scars are so visible it led to a life of being highly visible, to being bullied, to being shunned, to being avoided because they were uncomfortable knowing how to talk to her, and to her not feeling wanted, needed or even loved. But she has a beautiful story of discovering for herself that she wanted herself, she needed herself and most of that she loved herself. She became herself and she owned who she was. She was not defined by what happened to her, not by any event that happened to her.She met someone special and fell in love and had three beautiful children. 24 years later she learned even more about herself and her strength and divorced her husband and became a single mother. Her strength comes from within and knowing who she is. This led to eventually trying painting and the inspiration for this blanket. The image on this blanket is one her first original works and the message is her message to anyone going through similar struggles that she has experienced in her life.Kelly found a way to go from near-death to success; from the ugly scar-faced girl to the Top 10 Most Powerful and Influential Speaker, Fierce Woman of the Year, Best-Selling Author (4 times), recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and most recently a YWCA Woman of Distinction 2013.You have to ask yourself how? In the increasingly complex world, raising children to become adaptable, communicative, open, creative, and self-reliant thinkers is a tall order. As the raging pandemic is taking its toll on the American psyche, some groups are proving to be more vulnerable than others. The American Psychological Association's 2021 survey reports that the parents of children under 18 years of age are the highest stressed groups of people in the United States. So we need a universal healing approach and a pragmatic insight to handle the stress. On this episode of Full PreFrontal, award-winning author of The Dolphin Parent (A Guide to Raising Healthy Happy, and Self-Motivated Kids) and celebrated speaker, Dr. Shimi Kang shares ways to becoming a better parent while re-balancing yourself so that you become a trustworthy and compassionate role-model for your children.About Dr. Shimi KangDr. Kang is passionate about providing science-based tools that optimize the power of the human brain. If you want compassion for your children, you must start with yourself. And that is exactly where we are starting in today's podcast. Patricia Morgan is a therapeutic counsellor, author, motivational speaker, coach and caregiver for her now 52-year-old daughter on the Spectrum. She is past president of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers, Calgary and has won both the Spirit of CAPS award and the YWCA Woman of Vision award. Usually, when I talk to a caregiver, we talk about advice on raising an individual with FASD. Today's conversation is a little different. While we do talk about her role as a caregiver, and how that journey led her to where she is, we spend most of our time talking about resilience and how you can develop that muscle. “Resilience says I have the capacity to stay steady in the face of adversity, challenge, change, the behaviour of others and myself. It is also the ability to rebound after falling and reach out for help.” Our lives as caregivers require resilience. Patricia gives us insight into the lessons she learned and what she did to build her resilience, as well as: The importance of discovering your “I am” statements; One thing you should never withhold from your children; A habit you can start tonight to build your resilience; and An exercise to begin healing from your past. “If you put all your self-esteem and your self-concept into being a caregiver, you are going to make yourself vulnerable for exactly that – make me look like a good caregiver. That is a risky road.” I am telling you this episode is filled with aha moments. You know I am big on self-care (so is Patricia) but part of self-care is self-compassion and that is built through resilience. So much of you gets lost in parenting a child with FASD and it is time to reclaim yourself. Have a listen. Check out the links and be sure to watch Patricia's video Holidays 2020: We Can Still Have Fun and if you care to share, let me know what your “I am statements” are! We are currently in a new decade, the year is 2020 and not only do we still battle with racial and social equality there’s gender equality as well. Us “ women “ are very powerful and courageous beings yet we are still seen as less then; never ever ever being equal to a man. We are taught to love ourselves, we are taught to aspire to marriage we can have ambition but not too much that it outshines “ the man “ in our lives. How do you solve a conflict between two parties if one of the parties does not believe there is a problem, or only recognizes it as a small issue, while the other party sees a large and continuous problem? As women we battle amongst ourselves; often competing on which feminine race is more attractive or what true sexual femininity is; which class of a women will more likely gain the interests of a man (classism), how we should dress and the latest fashion trends. Does digital social constructs help with our battles ladies? The business models of these social media networks incentivizes us to behave in certain ways, in ways that promote speaking often at the cost of listening. So are we constantly listening to the wrong information; and never really channeling what is best suited for us as individual women? I did some research: {please click the link}. “Gender Equality in the World of Work”. https://www.skillsforemployment.org/KSP/en/Discussions/WCMSTEST4_167473 LeeAnne Quattrucci is an attorney, teacher, writer and activist who empowers and inspires. Now led by her son Bart Egnal, it remains a major presence in the field, continuing to deliver pioneering programs established by Judith like Taking the Stage for women leaders. Since her retirement in 2017, Judith has continued to write and speak widely, sharing her knowledge about how to inspire through communication. In 2012, she was awarded the prestigious YWCA Woman of Distinction award for entrepreneurship.
