Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz explains how his songwriting process has changed over the years, and offers insights into some of his songs, from early classics to recent compositions. PART ONE:Paul and Scott discuss judging a book by its cover and their possible status as idiots. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Adam DuritzABOUT ADAM DURITZ:Songwriter Adam Duritz is best known as the lead singer of Counting Crows, which formed in 1991 in the San Francisco Bay area. Their 1993 debut album, August and Everything After, which was produced by T. Bone Burnett, attracted attention for songs such as “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here,” and “Rain King.” The album earned the group two Grammy nominations and was certified seven-times platinum. The double platinum follow-up album, Recovering the Satellites, reached number one and produced the top 10 pop single “A Long December.” Subsequent #1 singles on Billboard's AAA chart include “American Girls” with Sheryl Crow, “She Don't Want Nobody Near,” “Accidentally in Love” from Shrek 2 (which earned them an Academy Award nomination), and “You Can't Count on Me” and “Come Around” from the band's fifth album, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. In 2021 Counting Crows reached #2 on the AAA chart with “Elevator Boots” from their EP Butter Miracle, Suite One. Their eighth studio album, Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, will be released this Friday, May 9. You'll hear clips of some of the new songs during our conversation, but to hear others Adam discusses, such as “With Love, From A-Z” and “Boxcars,” you'll have to wait a few days for the new album. In all, the band has sold over 20 million albums and established themselves as vibrant live performers who often put a fresh spin on the recorded versions of their classic songs.
This week, Original Counting Crows Drummer Steve Bowman joins me to take a deep dive into the band's debut 1993 masterpiece, “August & Everything After,” including the stories behind tracks such as: “Round Here,” “Omaha,” “Mr. Jones,” “Anna Begins,” “Time & Time Again,” “Rain King,” “Sullivan Street” & “A Murder of One.” We also discuss: the lessons learned from T-Bone Burnett, the producer of the album; the stories behind deep cuts & b-sides from that era, such as “Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman),” “Love & Addiction” & the album's title track (which wasn't released officially until 2019); the experience of performing on the David Letterman Show on the same evening as Madonna; seeing your smiling face on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine (just like Dr. Hook sang about), and so much more! Saul Bellow (born Solomon Bellows; June 10, 1915 – April 5, 2005) was a Canadian–American writer. For his literary work, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. He is the only writer to win the National Book Award for Fiction three times, and he received the National Book Foundation's lifetime Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 1990. In the words of the Swedish Nobel Committee, his writing exhibited "the mixture of rich picaresque novel and subtle analysis of our culture, of entertaining adventure, drastic and tragic episodes in quick succession interspersed with philosophic conversation, all developed by a commentator with a witty tongue and penetrating insight into the outer and inner complications that drive us to act, or prevent us from acting, and that can be called the dilemma of our age." His best-known works include The Adventures of Augie March, Henderson the Rain King, Herzog, Mr. Sammler's Planet, Seize the Day, Humboldt's Gift, and Ravelstein. Bellow said that of all his characters, Eugene Henderson, of Henderson the Rain King, was the one most like himself. Bellow grew up as an immigrant from Quebec. As Christopher Hitchens describes it, Bellow's fiction and principal characters reflect his own yearning for transcendence, a battle "to overcome not just ghetto conditions but also ghetto psychoses." Bellow's protagonists wrestle with what Albert Corde, the dean in The Dean's December, called "the big-scale insanities of the 20th century." This transcendence of the "unutterably dismal" (a phrase from Dangling Man) is achieved, if it can be achieved at all, through a "ferocious assimilation of learning" (Hitchens) and an emphasis on nobility. Geoff Harkness is a first-time guest. He's here to talk about his latest book Rain King: The Life and Music of Adam Duritz and Counting Crows. This is the complete story of Counting Crows - one of the most successful bands of the last three decades and their charismatic vocalist and songwriter Adam Duritz.Counting Crows have sold 20 million albums, led by several hit singles including “Mr. Jones”, “A Long December”, and “Accidentally in Love”. Harkness chronicles the writing and recording process of all six studio albums, and how the band reimagined the songs on the road. We also get the incredible story of Adam Duritz, who survived struggles with mental health, fame, and relationships. This is the first time we find out the lost history of his upbringing, the decade he spent on the San Francisco music scene, and the real stories of the people he chronicled in his lyrics including Jennifer Anniston and Courteney Cox. Enjoy the second hour of our interview with Geoff Harkness, who wrote the book ""Rain King: The Life and Music of Adam Duritz and Counting Crows".https://www.amazon.com/Rain-King-Music-Duritz-Counting/dp/B0C5241RM4In this hour, we talk about when the band's critics have been wrong (and admit when they may have been right). We also talk about how relating to the Crows may be different at age 45 (when compared to 25), the band's move to more abstract lyrics, and whether Adam really never cheated on a girl...Geoff also discusses his experience early this summer, when he found out that the band already knew of the book, and Adam already had his copy!Last, we review Geoff's favorite CC concert experience: the August 27-28, 2001 shows at House of Blues in New Orleans.https://www.countingcrows.com/show/house-of-blues-11https://www.countingcrows.com/show/house-of-blues-10_________________________For bootleg recordings of CC shows go to and register athttps://www.crows-town.com/Email usSullivanStreetPC@protonmail.com
A few months ago, author Geoff Harkness released the book "Rain King: The Life and Music of Adam Duritz and Counting Crows".https://www.amazon.com/Rain-King-Music-Duritz-Counting/dp/B0C5241RM4We review the book (not-so-spoiler alert: it's an absolute necessity for CC fans), interview Geoff, and have fun conversations about a number of CC topics. In this first hour (of two), topics include: Geoff's motivation behind this labor of love, the early/official CC message boards, what kind of fans go to the shows nowadays, the 2000-ish strategy of CD "hidden tracks", the Coke commercial/Pearl Jam "rivalry", how Adam balances his dual-motivations of fame and artistic vision, and whether CC fans really do have the highest IQ.
This week we are watching cows get sucked up into tornadoes while we discuss “The Rain King”! We're talking our long-long-awaited arrival in Kansas, whether or not controlling the weather is a federal crime, how much we love the Rain King's vibes, Mulder and Scully gazing at each other, how endearing it is that Mulder has no ability to read social cues, and how messed up it is that this episode is taking jobs away from stunt cows. We make it through half an hour of this episode without a Wizard of Oz reference and then come crashing to the ground, we enjoy some Scully Girl Talk that the message boards were all over, we discuss Kansan skin flaps that allow people to glide through tornadoes, and we bring up David Boreanaz again, because hey. It's been a while. Also, looking at next week's episode… We hear a big butt coming!Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

Sam Vecchio is hilarious and is such a fun time! You will definitely want him to be your best friend after listening to this episode. Since before he could walk or talk or certainly sing, Sam Vecchio has been obsessed with music. With appreciation of all genres, Sam has studied music and artists since the first time he played a vinyl record. With influences ranging from The Beatles and Hall and Oates, to Billy Joel and Paul Carrack to recent acts like I Don't Know How But They Found Me and Lord Huron. Sam started his professional music career in college by replacing a local pub DJ that let him fill in one night and lost his spot when the patrons demanded Sam's return. In March of 2020, Sam had some extra time on his hands due to a worldwide Pandemic (COVID-19) and found himself in isolation for nearly a month without any contact with the outside world. He picked up his guitar, that hasn't seen much action from Sam in years and he started to play “Rain King” by the Counting Crows, the next night Sam played a few songs and returned every night for nearly one hundred nights consecutively (he promised his Facebook friends that he would play every night until the pandemic was over (a little ambitious on THAT promise). What he found, in turn, was not only did it help him try to get through a difficult time, but it was appointment viewing for a lot of his friends, family, and co-workers. Even though he always thought he'd be a Rockstar from age nine, he is getting to live a small part of that dream many years later. He doesn't take himself too seriously and finds it most difficult to talk about himself in the third person. Because he wrote this bio! "We all wanna be Bob Dylan." In the midst of grunge and new punk, Adam Duritz and Co. were a throwback, not just to folk/pop music, but to the singer-songwriter era. Duritz's poetic narratives offered a deep look into his soul and psyche, to his desire for belonging and fame. He would get at least the latter thanks to beautiful, pop hits like "Round Here," "Rain King" and, of course, "Mr. Jones, which remains a radio staple. But the album, "August and Everything After" is a complete piece, often overlooked as a whole due to the momentous success of radio hits. "We all wanna be big stars, yeah, but we got different reasons for that."

Named after the Elton John song “Daniel” it was inevitable that music would play a big part in Dan’s life as it has and in a very positive way I met Dan in the early noughties when I was running Public Sector for Microsoft UK. Dan was a young, fresh faced contractor with lots of energy and commitment and with a real desire to join Microsoft as a full-time employee. I am proud that I was able to give him that opportunity, I just wish I’d done it sooner! Over time, Dan and I bonded and built a friendship around music, and that continued when he moved to Seattle in 2014. That move has allowed him to indulge his passions around music, cars, sailing and travel whilst advancing his career, He now has a lovely house in Alki with a view over the Puget Sound that I will always be slightly envious of. No profile of Dan would be complete without reference to the deep love he has for what he calls “His Crows”. Dan has a wide-ranging taste in music as can be seen in the 71 songs in this episodes playlist (yes, that’s the biggest ever!) . But in amongst all of that there is a love and a passion for the Counting Crows that I absolutely identify with. He has now seen them live 34 times across numerous states and countries and they will always be the soundtrack to his life. In Dan’s view “Rain King” is the ultimate Crows song and it’s appropriately one of his song choices and the name of this episode. You can hear the record breaking Playlist here . From death and dying to life and living. On this full length episode, we examine the humor, the horror, the existential, the wonder, and even the disagreeable in the lost and found (and possibly changed) madcap protagonist Eugene Henderson of Saul Bellow's Henderson the Rain King. With Nathan out sick, Nick and David are joined by Eric Heiman, official B.O.S.S. Book Club member and unofficial Bellow buff. As always, read the book and give us listen. Hi everyone, David here! On this week’s podcast, Keva and I discuss devil babies, shady politicians, and lament the lack of darkness since the show moved from Vancouver… So much so, in fact, that we recorded today’s episode in an abandoned mansion in an effort to recapture that vintage X-Files vibe. It was all fine until we found two bodies under the floorboards. And what was really weird was that they were wearing the same clothes as us. It was a little embarrassing, but in a way gave us confidence in our fashion choices. After all, the fact that there’s two of us out there trying to pull off a cowboy boots/mankini combo tells me I’m on to something. Anywho… Enjoy listening to a couple of narcissistic, overzealous, self-righteous egomaniacs talk about the following five episodes from The X-Files’ sixth season: How The Ghosts Stole Christmas Terms of Endearment The Rain King S.R. 819 Tithonus LYDA: I don’t show my hole to just anyone.MULDER: Why are you showing it to me?
