A veritable gaggle of gamers take to the airwaves to discuss three recent competitions held in Plymouth, Burton (which took place recently in "the land of beer." ) and Bournemouth, all in a rather chilly February of this year. There are also diversions into buying rubbish on eBay from Heinz Games (or at least that's what the AI Summary thought we said..), shipping wargaming stuff from the USofA (pre tariffs!), Central London Club's recent enfatuation with two new rule sets, Jackals and Sword Weirdos, and Mark's progress in finishing a whole book on the Khmer (which he's writing, not simply struggling to read.). There is also talk of commissioning figures, Richard Morgans new SF tome "Thin Air," set on Mars, a bit of Test of Honor as well as Simons upcoming stab at converting Warmaster units and rules to use ADLG's mechanics, which is about to be tried at CLWC in the coming weeks and months. Towards the end (in its traditional slot, and with its traditional French Techno soundtrack) Andy's Quiz makes a long overdue reappearance, although sadly sans Andy this week. The quiz covers the theme of hesitant allies, inspired by Andy's recent experience at Burton. The quiz answers will be released in the next podcast!
In this special episode of the Mark and Pete Show, we celebrate Cornish Pasties at then culminatino of Cornish Pasty Week by delving into the exciting events that took place, culminating in the World's Fastest Amateur Pasty Crimper competition. Held on March 1, 2025, at the Great Cornish Food Store in Truro, this inaugural event showcased the rich heritage and community spirit of Cornwall. We explore the origins and cultural significance of the Cornish pasty, a culinary icon with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, ensuring its traditional recipe and methods are preserved. The art of crimping, essential for sealing the pasty and maintaining its integrity during baking, was at the heart of the competition. Participants, both adults and under-16s, demonstrated their speed and precision in crimping three pasties as quickly as possible, each with at least 18 crimps.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

Title: Ride Report: 2024 Upper Peninsula Trip - Scenic Roads, Pasty Trails & Boat Hoists!
Send us love letters (texts) here!
As the summer holidays kick off and people plan for journeys far and near, Sheila explores what food is provided on trains and at train stations across the country. A new report by the Office for Road and Rail suggests passengers pay around 10 per cent more for food inside stations, where catering leases often roll over automatically with limited opportunities for new food businesses to enter the market. Sheila finds out who the biggest players are in rail food and speaks to a range of people from station operators, food retailers and train companies to find out: is train food as bad as it once was? Not many people spend their lives in constant motion, but travel writer Caroline Eden is one of them. Sheila shares a train picnic with Caroline on the train line leading up to Scotland's walking country, and hears stories of food shared and meals eaten on remote routes during Caroline's travels through Central Asia and beyond. Pasties are one of Caroline's favourite journey foods, and she's not alone. From the tin miners of Cornwall's past to their omnipresence at stations today, pasties might just be one of the UK's longest-standing foods eaten on the move. Sheila also hears from travel correspondent Simon Calder, reporting from a station cafe on the Swiss-Italian border, with his perspective on how train catering has changed and his top tops for eating well on the move. How does food on trains compare in other countries and is there anything we can learn from the food cultures of others? Tokyo food tour host Yukari Sakamoto explains the tradition of Japan's Bento boxes, nutritious, freshly-cooked boxed meals bought at stations and eaten on trains across the country. Presented by Sheila Dillon and produced by Nina Pullman for BBC Audio in Bristol.
Lawry's Pasties has been a family-run business since 1946, specializing in traditional Cornish pasties and maintaining the original recipe through four generations. Located in Marquette, Michigan, Pete and Addie Lawry share their journey of rebuilding the business after a devastating fire in the strip mall where their shop was located. They used resourcefulness and determination to start over, which included using equipment from Pete's mother's shop. With winter months being slow for tourism, Pete and Addie came up with a clever way to keep their business going while reaching UP transplants from around the nation year-round. Episode 437: The Nip Slip Seen Around the World This week Host Dave Bledsoe loudly is very excited because he gets to talk about his favorite subject: Boobs. (Unfortunately he keeps insisting on talking about them to women at the bar, who do NOT want to hear it.) On the show this week we travel back 20 years ago this month to a more innocent time, when a half second of barely bar boob scandalized America. (Well, a small portion of it, the rest of American wanted to see more.) We are talking about The Wardrobe Malfunction and Nipplegate! (Game on!) Along the way we learn more than ANYONE wanted to know about Dave's first sexual experience. (Our editing team are still feeling nauseous) Then we dive into the history of mid game entertainment during American football championship games. (We are not legally allowed to use the name of the damn thing without express permission of the National Football League.) Then we tell the backstory of all the people on the stage that fateful night, including Kid Rock. (For no adequately explored reason.) We walk you through the events leading to point seconds of televised, barely visible nipple and the fallout from people almost but not quite seeing Janet Jackson's bare boob. Finally, we explain what really happened that night, and it is (according to our research)exactly what EVERYONE thought happened in the first place. (We cite our sources!) Our Sponsor this week's sponsor is Penny's Pasties, when you need them not to be seen, slap on a Penny's. We open with anniversary coverage of Nipplegate and close with JC & the Two Steps who bet they have you naked by the end of this podcast. It's the holiday season, so it's time for the magic of food on this month's episode. Food has a special role at this time of year . . . and in the Harry Potter series. Katy, Emily, and Louise Freeman talk about the food of the wizarding world: pumpkin pasties, cockroach clusters, butterbeer, cauldron cakes, and all things wizard food. We look at how food operates as a metaphor and how it develops mood and setting in the series. In the Harry Potter books, food serves important purposes in providing social opportunities for the magical community. Food is conspicuous in the Potter stories, even from the very first chapters. It's used for humor, world-building, and character-building across the series. The quality of food available to Harry often mirrors the quality of his life at various moments, representing alternately deprivation or abundance. Food fellowship also pervades the series, from Harry and Ron's first meeting on the Hogwarts Express to Weasley family dinners and Hogwarts feasts. Ron particularly has a hard time with food scarcity in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, one of the catalysts for his leaving Hermione and Harry. We also talk about where food is portrayed as morally “good” and “bad,” its use to signal nationalist or ethnic identity, food symbolism in myth and ritual, dangerous foods, and the tantalizing questions about magical creatures as both predators and edible prey.

In the final episode of Season 5, Jodie and Celia record the show in front of a very special live audience: international Never Nationers Gemma and Didi! It is only appropriate for the ladies to read Never Nationers fan mail, but does this show ever stay appropriate for long? Celia makes sure it does not by stripping down to the promised pasties from episode 20. And the inappropriate continues with the “nevers” sent from all of you! From pig nipples to period hats, this season ends with a cloaca of crazy!
