Summary: In this episode of Be a Smarter Homeowner, Beth Dodson and John Bodrozic dive into a topic you might not think about often — what's hiding inside your storage unit or other outbuildings? Whether it's transitional moves, seasonal gear, heirlooms, or forgotten treasures, too many people lose track of what they own simply because it's out of sight. Beth and John break down why it's critical to inventory your storage units, sheds, barns, or other structures — and how doing so can save you money, protect your investments, and ease the burden on your family in the future. They share real-life stories (including some pretty wild finds!), practical tips for getting started with a simple photo inventory, and why HomeZada makes managing all these spaces easier than ever. You'll also hear how taking just a few hours upfront can prevent the costly mistakes of duplicate purchases, lost heirlooms, and even unwanted appearances on shows like Storage Wars! This is a must-listen if you have any kind of off-site or extra storage — and even if you think you don't! Chances are, you've got more stored away than you realize. Takeaways People often forget what they have in storage units. Storage units are used for transitional moves and seasonal items. Climate-controlled storage is important for items like wine and art. Documenting items helps avoid duplicate purchases. An inventory can assist in estate planning and passing on belongings. Taking photos of items can simplify inventory management. Hiring professionals can ease the burden of inventorying storage units. Organizing storage units can save time in the long run. Understanding what's in storage can prevent unnecessary expenses. Communication with heirs about storage contents is crucial. Sound Bites "I can't remember what was in them." "It's super easy to take an inventory." "Documenting is a huge reason to inventory." "You may be able to see large items." "It's a waste of money." "You can hire somebody to do it." Climate change has accelerated efforts by some theorists to develop mechanisms for controlling Earth's weather patterns and even the biosphere. But human attempts to control our these elements are nothing new. In fact, our ancestors aspired to do the same in antiquity. But what attempts have been made already to alter the weather? Were they successful? What did we learn from these efforts? Is this fantasy? madness? or something we can achieve?  In this episode I speak with science and technology historian Prof. Jim Fleming (Ph.D. history, Princeton University) who is the Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Science, Technology, and Society at Colby College. His published works include Fixing the Sky: The Checkered History of Weather and Climate Control and Inventing Atmospheric Science.  With a mixed background covering both science and history, he is uniquely positioned to critique past and present efforts to manipulate the weather. Send us a Text Message. It's Roz Chandler here with a special solo episode of The Cutflower Podcast. Today, I'll be diving into a topic that has sparked a lot of interest – growing flowers in a polytunnel. Whether you're a seasoned flower farmer or just starting out, this episode will provide valuable insights and tips on how to optimise your flower growing efforts under cover.SummaryIn this episode, we explore the advantages of using polytunnels for flower farming. Polytunnels provide a controlled environment that protects plants from extreme weather, pests, and diseases, while also extending the growing season. I share my personal experiences and practical advice on how to make the most of these structures, including what types of flowers thrive best in them and how to manage the unique challenges they present. From climate control to water efficiency, we cover all the essential aspects of polytunnel cultivation.Key TakeawaysClimate Control: Polytunnels offer a stable environment, shielding flowers from extreme temperatures, wind, rain, and frost, which leads to consistent growth conditions and higher quality blooms.Extended Growing Season: These structures allow for an extended growing season, enabling farmers to start earlier in the spring and continue later into the autumn and winter, thus maximising market opportunities.Pest and Disease Management: Polytunnels act as a barrier against many pests and diseases. Although not foolproof, they make it easier to manage and control infestations, particularly with the use of biological pest controls.Water Efficiency: With fine-tuned irrigation systems, polytunnels ensure optimal water usage, reducing waste and stress on plants, which is crucial for maintaining plant health and flower quality.Improved Flower Quality: Flowers grown in polytunnels are often of superior quality due to the protection from weather and pests. This leads to more pleasing and marketable blooms.Specific Plant Needs: Different flowers have different requirements. For instance, roses benefit from the controlled environment to avoid weather damage, while delphiniums and dahlias thrive with protection from wind and rain.Planning and Investment: Investing in a polytunnel is significant but worthwhile. Careful planning of what to grow and where to place your polytunnel is essential to maximise benefits and return on investment.Join me as I delve into each of these points, sharing tips from my 15 years of experience and how we do it at Fieldgate Flowers. Conventional fuel solutions, particularly the widely used "natural gas," conceal a myriad of environmental hazards. Methane, the primary component in this mix, is a potent greenhouse gas — 25 times more impactful per gram than carbon dioxide — accompanied by a cocktail of toxic air pollutants, including benzene, a known carcinogen. And in home climate control, a silent but critical battle wages against traditional fuel-based systems. In Canada, 51% of homes are heated during winter with forced air furnaces, mainly fuelled by natural gas. The quest for more efficient, sustainable solutions led Paul Lambert, former Director of Area 120 at Google, to envision a Silicon Valley-powered endeavour in the fight against climate change. Paul, now Founder and CEO of Quilt, a pioneering force in crafting the world's most advanced home heating and cooling system, speaks about changing how we keep our homes' temperature comfortable. His career narrative weaves through technology, product development, and sustainability, drawing mainly from his experience in Google's well-known product development sector.  Quilt embodies the mission to revolutionize home climate control by constructing an intelligent, ductless heat pump system — a fusion of sleek design and AI-driven efficiency that bids farewell to fossil fuels. Tune in as we delve into Quilt's audacious journey, poised at the precipice of redefining home climate systems, and explore how Paul and his team aim to usher humanity into a future free from the combustion habit, making an impact, as the company says, at a species level. In construction sites, Crumpton explains that during the building process, there is a risk of moisture penetration from various sources, such as rain or atmospheric conditions, due to incomplete structures. This moisture can impact materials like wood, casing work, sheet rock, and gypsum-based products. To mitigate potential long-term issues and premature failure of components, it is crucial to control humidity. Using equipment to maintain the proper relative humidity ensures adherence to project timelines and preserves the integrity of construction materials.Similarly, in mission critical environments like data centers or industrial applications, maintaining the correct humidity levels is essential. Crumpton highlights the need for precision control through portable or permanently fixed equipment to ensure the ideal environment for tasks such as cabling and IT equipment installation. Excessive moisture in these settings can lead to operational challenges and potential equipment failures, underscoring the significance of humidity management for the long-term success of both construction projects and mission critical facilities.

Sometimes, it's hard to be thankful for much when the World is spiraling into desperation! However, the fact that one is reading this, listening to this show, and/or standing up means that person is blessed to be alive! That's enough for me. In today's show, we analyze the latest information coming out of the Middle East. Though we've been told the Hamas-Israel hostage release deal has been approved, there apparently are some issues. It's supposedly been paused until Friday. We discuss news that the Biden Administration is quietly attacking fossil fuel in another way. How? They are using the EPA to create regulations that will likely kneecap fossil fuel producers because of penalties created and implemented by bypassing Congress and using Executive orders! Haven't heard about this? It's just another way the Biden Administration is skirting the authority of Congress to implement more of the Climate Control measures the Left demands. Kaleb Newman, our 43-year-old son, joins the show to discuss the changes he's witnessed as an executive chef in Dallas-Ft. Worth dealing with his 75 employees who come from 3-4 generations. Things and people are changing -- and not for the better!

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Thursday night rolled out some of his most apocalyptic climate rhetoric to date declaring “the era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived.” S&P Global no longer includes environmental, social, and corporate governance scores in its debt ratings after facing scrutiny over the practice many see as politically leaning and unnecessary. The credit ratings agency has been monitoring and rating companies' efforts regarding ESG on a scale of 1-5 since 2021 but decided late last week to ditch the analysis. It's the countdown to the Coronation of Charles III as King and Camilla as Queen of the United Kingdom, on May 6th at Westminster Abbey in London. Preparations are in their final stages-for the Royal Family, as well as the terrorists. Radical Islamists (Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS) have been recruiting their believers to take revenge on Prince Harry and the Royals, ever since he wrote about his tours of duty in Afghanistan and boasted about killing 25 terrorists in his memoir, Spare. You will hear how they have ordered Harry's death, announcing, “Let Islamic hands take their just retribution!”There are other extremists, too, who are planning to stage protests of varying sorts, including: The Republic, whose slogan is “Not My King”, to Ecoterrorists, such as Just Stop Oil, Climate Control, and Extinction Rebellion. There arealso miscellaneous anarchists, lone wolves, and common criminals - since the crowds will be a picnic for pickpockets, and more. Some claim their plans are nonviolent, such as placards and noise. Others don't hide their more violent intentions, such as tossing rape alarms at the horses. We'll also look at the preparations being made by those in charge of protecting the Royals, visiting heads of state and onlookers: Operations Golden Orb and Tower of London. There will be police, military, and terrorist task forces. But, the danger is greater than at previous big events such as the Platinum Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth's funeral, and you will hear why. Then we will look at what else Harry and Meghan have to do with it. A Prince Harry lookalike, who has been forced to disguise himself because of the threats on Harry's life, has some wise advice for the Prince. A Russian artist is selling blood-soaked copies of Spare for $10,000 - with blood from Afghans. Meghan and her family are terrorizing the Coronation in another way - with bids to steal the spotlight.
