John Carroll, Defense Counsel for Brendan Banfield, presented closing arguments today in the Brendan Banfield murder trial. Banfield, a former IRS agent, is charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the February 2023 deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at their Herndon, Virginia home.Prosecutors allege Banfield plotted the killings with the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair. Magalhães has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is expected to testify against Banfield. The prosecution laid out their case. Now the defense has to tear it apart. Michael McKee pleaded not guilty to the aggravated murders of Monique Tepe and Spencer Tepe. His attorneys are now preparing for the pretrial battles that could determine whether a jury ever hears the most damaging evidence against him.Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis walks us through the defense's likely strategy. McKee waived his bail hearing—Eric explains why that's a calculated move, not a surrender. The real fight happens in motions. The affidavit includes allegations that McKee strangled Monique and forced unwanted sex on her during the marriage—abuse that was never reported to police or prosecuted. Eric breaks down the motion to exclude that testimony as prejudicial and unproven, and whether it has a realistic chance of succeeding. Then there's the hearsay problem. Witnesses say Monique told them McKee threatened to kill her, said he'd find her and buy the house next door, said she'd "always be his wife." But Monique is dead. The defense will argue those statements can't come in. Eric explains what exceptions might apply and how hard that fight will be.We also examine how the defense might reframe the cell phone going dark—the prosecution calls it consciousness of guilt, but what's the innocent explanation? How do you explain surveillance footage showing your client at the property three weeks before the murders? And if the vehicle evidence seems overwhelming, can the defense separate McKee from the car?If acquittal isn't on the table, what does a defense "win" look like?#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #DefensePlaybook #HearsayFight #ReasonableDoubt #CriminalDefense #HiddenKillers #MurderTrial #OhioMurderJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The prosecution's case against Michael McKee looks overwhelming—until you examine it from the defense table. Yes, police say they found the murder weapon in his apartment. Yes, his alibi reportedly failed. Yes, family members describe an obsession with his ex-wife Monique Tepe that lasted eight years after their divorce. But McKee's defense team sees opportunities prosecutors don't want to acknowledge. Today on True Crime Today, criminal defense attorney Eric Faddis breaks down exactly how McKee's attorneys might attack the state's case in the Tepe double murder. Faddis is a former felony prosecutor who switched sides and has tried 45+ jury trials—he knows how to find the cracks that create reasonable doubt. We examine the chain of custody issues with a weapon recovered 300 miles from the crime scene, the search warrant challenges that could suppress key evidence, and the difficulty of securing a conviction when no eyewitness places the defendant at the scene. McKee reportedly talked to police before invoking his right to remain silent—can those statements be suppressed or recontextualized? How does defense counter the prosecution's "cold, calculating killer" narrative? Could diminished capacity reframe the entire case? And what happens if prosecutors seek the death penalty in Ohio? The defense came out swinging on Day 6 of the Brendan Banfield murder trial — and the prosecution is now playing defense. It started with a failed motion to throw out the au pair's testimony. Judge denied it. Then came the body camera footage: Brendan Banfield at the hospital the morning his wife died, breaking down when doctors delivered the news. He cried again today watching it. The defense wants the jury to see a grieving husband. The prosecution says it's an act.But the real battle today was forensic. Defense expert LeeAnn Singley challenged every conclusion the prosecution's blood spatter analyst made yesterday. She testified that the evidence doesn't definitively show staging — and added that murderers sometimes hurt themselves to support their story. That cuts multiple directions. Then came digital forensics. A Fairfax County detective confirmed he was "not voluntarily removed" from the case. A private investigator laid groundwork for the theory that Christine Banfield controlled the FetLife account — not Brendan. If the jury believes that, the entire prosecution narrative collapses.Child endangerment charges are proceeding. Snow may shorten the trial. And somewhere in that courtroom, reasonable doubt is either building or crumbling.Full breakdown of everything that happened in court today.#TrueCrimeToday #BrendanBanfield #AuPairTrial #ChristineBanfield #JosephRyan #FetLife #ForensicEvidence #DefenseCase #FairfaxCounty #MurderTrialJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? You saw them on ABC News; now meet them on this excting episode. The Reasonable Doubts is a "garage band" of  Minnesota judges, created to provide creativity and to relieve stress through making music together. The group has nine members, who come together to enjoy music and foster camaraderie outside of their judicial roles.    The Reasonable Doubts was formed about two years ago by Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Anne McKeig, who sent an email to judges across the state inviting them to join her in starting a band.  As you will hear, the name "Reasonable Doubts" refers to the legal standard of proof required in criminal cases. The band practices nearly every weekend in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and their repertoire covers genres from country to rock and pop. They perform covers of popular songs, including tracks by Elvis Presley, AC/DC, and Beyoncé. The Reasonable Doubts has participated in various events, including their first public booking at Law Law Palooza, (Get it?) a benefit concert for legal aid, highlighting their commitment to community engagement while also showcasing their musical talents.  The Reasonable Doubts band demonstrates how judges can come together to share their love for music, to support each other, and to find balance in their demanding careers. I know from my day job the stress under which judges work --- day and night.  The Reasonable Doubts goes a way to relive that stress.Enjoy this episode!

True Crime Today brings you the defense perspective on the Brendan Banfield murder trial. Defense attorney Bob Motta breaks down where the prosecution's case is weakest — and how reasonable doubt gets built from the wreckage of a flawed investigation.Officer Brendan Miller — the department's digital forensics expert — analyzed 60 devices and concluded Christine Banfield controlled the FetLife account. Not her husband. His findings were peer-reviewed by the University of Alabama and confirmed. Then he was transferred out of the unit. The lead detective who questioned the catfishing theory was reassigned. Prosecutor Eric Clingan was removed after being cited for drinking at 8 a.m.Clingan admitted on the record that 12 homicide detectives had 24 different theories before the au pair gave her proffer. Motta explains exactly how damaging that admission is — and how the defense exploits it in front of a jury. The prosecution treats the framed photo of Brendan and Juliana as a smoking gun. They're using Banfield's IRS background to argue he knew how to stage a crime scene. Motta explains how defense attorneys flip every piece of that narrative. It took 19 months to charge Brendan Banfield. Investigators were transferred. Evidence was excluded. Theories kept changing. Motta identifies where reasonable doubt lives in this case — and what the jury should be thinking about when they walk into deliberations.#BrendanBanfield #BobMotta #TrueCrimeToday #DefenseAttorney #ChristineBanfield #AuPairMurder #ReasonableDoubt #MurderTrial #CriminalDefense #TrueCrimeNewsJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? SubscribeBuy me a coffeeThe U.S. Senate just passed an unprecedented resolution condemning a single private citizen by name—a guy who's never committed an act of violence—simply for having a conversation on Tucker Carlson's show. But here's the twist: this resolution reveals desperation, not dominance. If you understand power, you'll recognize this isn't a flex. It's a tell.In this episode of Reasonable Doubts, we unpack why Congress is obsessed with policing outsiders, why Schumer pushed this vote, and how the political establishment accidentally exposed their own weakness. When a government starts labeling “heretics,” it means dissent is gaining ground — not losing it.This episode breaks down the resolution itself, the political incentives behind it, the media choreography surrounding it, and the deeper psychological purpose of public condemnations. You'll see why the Senate needed this moment — and why it backfired.

Be honest, would you do it? We discuss Naima's story from Season 2 to 3, dissect Lewis's nonstop need for reassurance from his wife, and share the best reads of the entire season. Mama Lu? Lance Sullivan? Ozzie?? Yeah, we're talking about all of them. And as always, we're asking the only question that matters… WAS. IT. GOOD. THOUGH?!
