“Observatory” Now the name Aeon Station might not sound familiar but their music probably does. And there's a simple reason for that. Aeon Station is basically 3/4ths of the personnel of the legendary New Jersey band The Wrens. So why is the band Aeon Station and not the Wrens? Well, there's also a simple reason for that but it's one of those simple reasons that's actually kind of complicated and probably deserves its own podcast by way of explanation. So let's just go with this. The band is Aeon Station because it's not the Wrens. Confused? This should clear things up. The Wrens formed in '89, put out three perfect albums, including Secaucus and The Meadowlands. The Meadowlands came out in 2003 and the band was poised to translate their critical acclaim capitol—of which they had a massive amount—into a profile that was bound to be larger, but, long story short: they didn't. Now, almost twenty years later, Singer/guitarist Kevin Whelan who shared Wrens songwriting and singing duties with Charles Bissell in a kind of Jones and Strummer way, decided he would step forward with a batch of songs he'd been sitting on, including five that were intended for the follow up to The Meadowlands. Whelan's longtime Wrens comrades—his brother Greg and Jerry MacDonald—play on Aeon Station's Observatory and the results are nothing short of captivating. A dramatic song cycle of indie rock soundscapes powered by wondrous melodies and lilting choruses, Observatory is stunning work. Falling somewhere between Remy Zero's Villanelle, Radiohead's OK Computer and the crunchy beauty of Canada's Aerogramme, the album is a breathtaking blast of melodic wonder. It's affecting, it's arresting and it's utterly thrilling—it reminds us that whether beauty rises or falls, its always spectacular. In this chat Kevin Whalen talks to Alex about The Wrens' misadventures, the genesis of Aeon Station, his daily musical practice and what's in the Whelan musical vaults…. www.facebook.com/aeonstationband www.subpop.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

SOMEBODY SAVE MEEEEEE! If you're a fan of SMALLVILLE you likely sang this tune along with Remy Zero for 10 seasons in one the best DC shows ever created. Starring Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent in the Superboy tale we never knew we wanted cause it was the boy without the super in many ways. Showcasing his formative years in the Kansas town of Smallville. The show featured a cast that we grew up with and fell in love with in their roles as the pivotal and life shaping people in young Clarks' life. From his loving parents Jonathan and Martha Kent played by Annette O' Toole and John Schneider. To the first love Lana Lang played by Kristin Kreuk. Then you have Michael Rosenbaum as the ultimate Lex Luthor and the sad fall from grace beginning as a friend to Clark. The show was near and dear to many who couldn't wait to see the boy finally become the Superman he was destined to be. It was filled with many unforgettable moments and it's been 20 years since October 2001 debut and JAFN sees this as the perfect opportunity to visit our favorite town in middle America! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jafnpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jafnpodcast/support

“Swinging On The Moon” Steve Kilbey can swing from anywhere he wants in the universe; the moon, the stars, whichever planet he chooses. And yes, of course, he can also swing from the milky way. Because the fact of the matter is that Steve Kilbey is a musician whose talents are not only downright otherworldly, they're positively celestial. A poet, a painter, a singer, a writer, a partner and a dad, Kilbey is not only one of the most fascinating musicians to ever walk around on this planet, he's also one of the most productive. In addition to the 25 albums he's recorded with the Church, he's got almost twenty solo albums under his belt, along with numerous side projects with members of Game Theory, The Go-Betweens, All India Radio and Remy Zero. Kilbey's new double album The Hall of Counterfeits is a straight up stunner that's as raw as it is ravishing. My First Band Podcast

You probably recognize the bass lines of Cedric LeMoyne in songs by Alanis Morissette and Gnarls Barkley. You might be aware of his work with his new band, Milwaukee’s own Rose of the West. However, LeMoyne’s first band also wasn’t too shabby. Remy Zero — a group he started with friends when he was a teenager living in Alabama — was signed by a major label, dropped by said label, scooped up by another major, relocated to Los Angeles and put on tours with the likes of Radiohead, Travis and many more mainstream music heavyhitters while they waited their turn for rock and roll superstardom. That turn ultimately never came, but along the way, Remy Zero wrote the theme for Smallville, had a song on the Garden State soundtrack, toured the world and collected a ton of amazing stories. Following a session with Morissette and prior to what has the makings of a busy summer for Rose of the West, LeMoyne stopped by Milwaukee Record headquarters to tell host Tyler Maas about his uncommon and incredible experience with his first band, as well as how he wound up in Alanis’ arsenal, what it was like to be a part of Gnarls Barkley at the height of their popularity and the band management philosophy he puts into play with acts like Warpaint and his own project. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”), Remy Zero (“Save Me”), and Rose Of The West (“Roads”).

We stick with the Garden Sessions for one more week to talk to my old pal Cinjun Tate of Remy Zero, hang with new friends from Marcy Playground, and visit with OG Outlaw Roadshow vets Brian Holl of Boy Bjorn/Foreign Fields and JP Roney of Boom Forest. We talk, they play, it’s all good.

Cinjun Tate of Remy Zero joins Kyle Meredith to discuss the 20-year anniversary of Villa Elaine, working with Benmont Tench of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, soundtracking both Garden State and Smallville, and discovering he had cancer the same day he found out he was going to be a father. He also touches on the writing processes behind hits “Prophecy” and “Fair”, the usefulness of embarrassment when selecting songs for a record, and why we shouldn't rule out hopes for new music. For our next installment of the Digging Your Scene roundtable series, we are exploring sights and sounds of Los Angeles in the 1990s. To help us do so, the following guests joined us: Brian Klein of Scout B Entertainment - his first time on the show, Brian moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s, starting as an intern at Rick Rubin's American Recordings label as well as employee of Aron's Records, he has worked in management and promotion of dozens of bands and currently manages Fitz and The Tantrums among others. Kellii Scott of Failure - making his third visit (#211 & #239), Kellii moved to LA in the 80s and played in a number of bands before joining Failure, later drumming for Blinker The Star, Campfire Girls, Veruca Salt and more. Failure are currently wrapping up the Pledgemusic campaign for the 20th anniversary live recording of their 1997 album Fantastic Planet. Shawn Michael Foster, director - also making his third visit (#64 & #236), Shawn moved to LA in the latter half of the 90s and started as music video director for bands such as Stabbing Westward, Chevelle, Sugarcult, Drive-by Truckers and many more. He is currently working on a television pilot and videos for Los Kingdom. We talk music clubs, weekly papers, records stores and more, plus reminisce about bands starting out that made it big and those that should have but never did, plus muggings, drugs, tangents and more tangents. It's a lively, loose conversation that would have taken place at the Rainbow Room in 1998 if we had a time machine and a bunch of cash. Also, what's the coolest thing currently about Ohio according to Kellii Scott, who shares some details on the next Failure album. Songs in this Episode: Intro - LA Medley (Jane's Addiction, Weezer, Beck, Rage Against The Machine, Tool) Outro - Stuck on You by Failure Previous Episodes Referenced: #060: Cheer Up by Plexi with Michael Angelos and Michael Barragan #072: August Everywhere by Blinker The Star with Jordon Zadorozny #156: Villa Elaine by Remy Zero #200: Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 by Guns ‘n Roses with Chip Midnight #201: Interview with Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom Be sure to join us at Patreon to listen to bonus content from this episode. This episode celebrates the 7th anniversary of this podcast, the first episode of which was published on Independence Day, July 4th of the year 2005. As you’d expect, my life is very different today than it was back then, in many ways better, in other ways…different; but I’m not complaining.  This is Life 2.0; the world has moved on, and so have we all. One major point of improvement in my life is the many friends I have been so fortunate to make, as a direct result of this goofy little podcast.   There have been days, sometimes weeks, where I haven’t felt like stepping up to the microphone.  There have been days and weeks when I haven’t felt like running.  The thing is; with your friendship, kindness and support: I’ve been inspired to run and motivated to podcast…to share with you my thoughts, opinions, observations and yes: even the tidbit details of my life; because when you run together you share something special…and even though this is a digital audio reproduction of my voice, somewhere in the world right now, some of our fellow runners are out on the road, getting their miles in and sharing the experience. Conversations, Meditations, and Explorations for and about runners. Phedippidations isn’t dead, but what it was seven years ago is but a ghost of what it has become. Thank you for running with me this far; but we’re not even half way there, and we have a long…long way to go.
