Sam Shain is a public school teacher whose book Education Revolution: Media Literacy for Political Awareness argues that K-12 students need to be equipped with the ability to analyze media and spot misinformation. This crucial skill, which helps them become informed participants in democracy and resist demagogues, is not actually widely taught. Shain explains how he teaches his students critical thinking, including playing "spot the fallacy" with Ben Shapiro videos and having students write their own piece of "fake news." In our conversation, we talk about why it's important to bring politics into the classroom and how to make sure kids hear dissenting perspectives without trying to indoctrinate them. Shain also recounts his own disturbing experience being forced out of a job after a complaint from a Trump-supporting parent. Nathan's recent article "Six Subjects That Should Be Taught In School But Aren't" can be read here. The book that Sam got in trouble for teaching, Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist, is available here. "If the teacher is merely teaching something that happened [in history], or teaching a book that might be a little bit controversial, [administrators] need to hold the line [against parent complaints]. And teachers need to do this sort of thing." — Sam Shain

This is the message from our Thursday evening service on 3/10/2022 titled "Rising Out of Failure" Joshua 8:21-35 with Pastor Chet Lowe.
Rising From Childhood Trauma and Narcissistic Abuse with Morgan Wilde Trauma is vastly unique to every person which can feel confusing. Trauma can affect one person and send them in one direction while the same trauma can send another on a completely different path. It shows up in so many different ways for each person. What is common is that most of us reach adulthood having experienced some form of childhood trauma. Imagine the massive impact and benefits for individuals and their connected relationships if we could normalize the idea of working on our childhood trauma as we enter adulthood. It would drastically change the face and direction of humanity. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn about the characteristics and traits that may signal childhood trauma. Hear expert advice on how to navigate unavoidable narcissistic relationships with narcissists like co-parenting. Be inspired by Morgan's recovery journey as a survivor of trauma and narcissistic abuse. Resources: My first book, Relationship Ready: How I Stopped Fucking Randos and Started Cupcaking My Soulmate, is available on Amazon and Audible. Grab your copy now! Connect with Morgan on Instagram | Facebook Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) Yellow Book: The Complete ACAoA Sourcebook: Adult Children of Alcoholics at Home, at Work, and in Love, by, Janet Geringer Woititz Struggle for Intimacy (Adult Children of Alcoholics series), by Janet Geringer Woititz Episode Highlights: Trauma Origins Morgan was born into a family riddled with trauma, addiction, dysfunction, and narcissistic abuse. The first phase of her trauma was shaped by her alcoholic addict narcissistic mother and her father who was a Vietnam veteran. Both her parents were children of alcoholics with deep wounds and they continued the trauma patterns as parents. As a teenager, Morgan removed herself from her mother and lived with her aunt, uncle, and younger brother. There she experienced years of narcissistic abuse, neglect, and bullying from the three of them. How the Effects of Trauma Showed up in Morgan's Life Morgan always felt a deep sense of not belonging and not fitting in anywhere. Without models or support in her childhood and life, she entered adulthood feeling completely unprepared for it and relationships. A deep fear of conflict because in her childhood, conflict always led to abandonment. A constant state of walking on eggshells which led to people pleasing and hyper awareness of the feelings of all people around her. Avoiding eye contact when in conflict, challenging conversations, or when people were upset. How to Get Curious About Our Childhood Trauma Get curious without judgment and with an open mind and heart. There may be things that are hard to accept but don't make it about judging ourselves or taking on more than what it is. Remain in curiosity and compassion rather than judgement. Dive into education through books, podcasts, Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA), Facebook groups, etc. Be willing to step out of our comfort zone and challenge old stories and patterns that came from our family. Find support!!! We are not alone in these experiences and we don't have to process or heal alone, either. There are childhood trauma survivor groups and communities, coaches, and therapists. If working with a coach or therapist, make certain they are trauma informed and go through a trial period. For most survivors, this may be their first healthy and supported relationship which creates a model for healthy relationships moving forward. Rising Out of Her Trauma Morgan moved to the West Coast and began to see herself outside of her family. She started her own recovery work with Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) where she first felt that her story was not the only one. Hearing other people's stories and reading the literature describing her characteristics and traits made the feeling of being alone and not belonging, go away. Morgan began to feel the emotional, physical, and spiritual toll that preparing for a phone call or visit with family took on her. It would take months to recover from a visit and take her dozens of steps backward in her recovery. After years of ‘doing more to fix it', hundreds of back and forth choices to detach, disconnect, and trying again, Morgan made the very personal and hard choice to go completely contactless with her family. Turning Her Trauma into The Way Out for Herself and Others Morgan could have continued to live out of fear for people who were no longer in her life or ground into her purpose and worthiness. Her healing and work with others allows her to express her authentic self. Starting out as a health coach opened the door for her to the importance and effectiveness of self-care. While helping people she is always working on her healing and growth. It keeps herself accountable to herself and her clients Morgan reminds us that we were hurt in relationships and that is where we developed our trauma wounds. Regardless of the work we do, we won't know how far we've come unless we experience relationship again. The idea that “I'll get into a relationship once I'm healed” doesn't work because that's where all our triggers come from. Daily Non Negotiables Morgan is dedicated to her work in ACA by attending meetings, connecting with the community, and doing her daily readings. Her ACA work keeps her life sane and moving in the right direction away from fears of abandonment, old patterns, and toxic relationships, and toward healthy, safe, and loving relationships. Being active in the relationships that support her. A few years back Morgan cut toxic relationships and behaviors out of her life and nurtured the relationships, habits and hobbies that fill her up. She attributes her success to the strength and connection of her support system that she checks in with daily. About Morgan Morgan Wilde is a childhood trauma recovery coach and a survivor of childhood trauma, family addiction, dysfunction & narcissistic abuse. Morgan helps survivors of childhood trauma and toxic family dysfunction to heal from the past, ground into the present, and feel hopeful about the future. Through deep inner healing she guides her clients to break free from unhealthy patterns and heal past wounds so that they may begin building healthy, safe, and loving relationships. In her 12 week one-on-one coaching program, Morgan has a deep awareness of the importance of a safe and comfortable space that can support the inherent discomfort of trauma work. Currently, Morgan is overseeing the construction of her tiny home in Oregon. She is living her longtime childhood dream of freedom, travel, and adventure in her vanlife. Her soon-to-be new tiny home will offer the part of her that longs for a homebase and community to come back to and take breaks. Enjoy the Podcast? Radio show host Derek Black grew up at the epicenter of white nationalism. His father founded Stormfront, the largest racist community on the Internet. His godfather, David Duke, was a KKK Grand Wizard. But even someone steeped in the culture of white nationalism found the space to question the prejudices behind his beliefs. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Eli Saslow joined us at Town Hall to tell the story of how the man who was considered the “leading light” of the burgeoning white nationalist movement confronted and disavowed everything he was taught to believe. Saslow took the stage in conversation with KNKX journalist Simone Alicea to relate Derek’s story with great empathy and narrative verve. He offered insight from his book Rising Out of Hatred, recounting how Derek’s fellow student at New College of Florida discovered his white nationalist broadcast, and how the ensuing uproar overtook one of the most liberal colleges in the country. Some students protested Derek’s presence on campus, forcing him to reconcile for the first time with the ugliness of his beliefs. Other students found the courage to reach out to him, including an Orthodox Jew who invited Derek to attend weekly Shabbat dinners. It was because of those dinners—and the wide-ranging relationships formed at that table—that Derek started to confront the history of his worldview and reckon with the damage he had done. Saslow and Alicea explored Derek’s story as a study of America’s increasingly divided nature, and lend critical empathy to this inflection point in our country to help us better understand one another. Eli Saslow is a Washington Post staff writer and author of Ten Letters: The Stories Americans Tell Their President. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting in 2014 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 2013, 2016 and 2017. Simone Alicea is a reporter and fill-in host at KNKX. Formerly, she covered breaking news at the Chicago Sun-Times. She has also spent time in Cape Town, South Africa, covering metro news for the Cape Times. Recorded live in the Forum by Town Hall Seattle on December 5, 2019.

This episode is a rebroadcast of the interview Matt Tullis did with Eli Saslow back in September 2014. Saslow, a reporter for the Washington Post, had just won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for his six-part series on food stamps in a post-recession America. Tullis and Saslow talked about that series and much more. Since joining the podcast, Saslow has continued to write compelling stories that show the big issues facing our country in minute detail. He’s written about the opioid epidemic, how the made-up stories get passed around the Internet as news, immigration, and more. In June 2018, he wrote a story about the school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, who didn’t go into the school to engage the shooter. Saslow’s story about a white supremacist turning his back on the movement was ultimately expanded into a book. Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist was published by Penguin Random House in September 2018. The paperback version of that book will be on sale on September 3 of this year. Saslow has won more awards than I can list. He won the Pulitzer in 2014, and was a finalist for that award in 2013, 2016, and 2017.

Meredith Lane Ferguson had big plans of having a career in TV Broadcasting, but after graduating with her degree she landed a job in New York that made her rethink her plan. Our Host, Kyle Malnati, has been a Realtor for over 13 years and through his years of experience with commercial real estate, he shares with our audience his belief that successful investors show us how to WIN in business. As we reflect on every meeting, phone discussion, or interview with our clients, we realize that there are some universal traits that the most successful real estate investors possess. We are excited to share these attributes with YOU. 1. They are BOLD. They are courageous. Everyone has fears, even great investors. What separates great real estate investors from everyone else is that they are NOT AFRAID to start. They are eager to get their hands dirty. 2. They are OPTIMISTIC. Great investors have great inner confidence in themselves that, in the end, THEY will win. In fact, they routinely EXPECT the most favorable outcome will occur for them. This doesn’t mean that “optimists” are the only successful investors… actually, being a “realist” can be just as helpful when needing to consider the downsides of an investment. Great investors are simply optimistic that THEY CAN FIND A WAY TO WIN. 3. They are AUTHENTIC. In a world dominated by social media, people are seeking authentic individuals more than ever. The best investors are genuine. They are the real deal. They are honest whether they are right or wrong. They are reliable and trustworthy. 4. They have GREAT RELATIONSHIPS. Great real estate investors realize that THEIR success is LIMITED to the help that they receive from others. Great investors most often live by the Golden Rule (in their personal and professional lives). As I mentioned previously, they are authentic so they learn to surround themselves with reliable and trustworthy teammates. Related: Wealth is all about having the right relationships (article) 5. They know their STRENGTHS. This means that they also know their weaknesses. The best investors make it very clear what they are good at and what they are not. Great real estate investors learn to hire the best people to back-fill their own weaknesses. 6. They are INTENTIONAL. No wasted steps or wasted movement. Great investors WALK WITH A PURPOSE. They set goals, follow a plan, and hit their goals. Successful real estate investors live a purpose driven lifestyle that starts with the question, “WHY.” Related: Simon Sinek’s TED Talk – “Start with WHY” (video) 7. They follow a SIMPLE PLAN. They understand that so much of success is getting up every day and going to WORK! Great real estate investors don’t overly complicate their lives; they stick to the fundamentals. Real estate success is a product of intentional reaping and sowing. You must plow the field, plant the seeds (sowing), and then you get to reap the rewards of the harvest. After you’ve enjoyed the fruits of your labor, wake up tomorrow and repeat. 8. They CREATE multiple income streams Great investors don’t go “all in.” Investing isn’t a dramatic scene at a Vegas casino. Great investors diversify. All businesses experience ups and downs. The best real estate investors create multiple streams of income so that they can “weather the storm” with their other businesses when one particular investment or industry isn’t performing well. 9. They are DRIVEN. Great investors aren’t timid. To use a basketball analogy, they drive the lane and score. Successful real estate investors have a tremendous work ethic. Their drive causes them to strive vigorously toward their goals. 10. They learn to DECIMATE DEBT. Debt hampers your net profits. I’ve NEVER met an 80-year old with a loan on their apartment building. Why is that? While real estate investors may have used a bank loan to initially purchase their rental property, they understand they they are ultimately in business with the bank until they pay off their loans. Successful investors take great strides to pay off their mortgages systematically and quickly. The greatest limit to your success is how much you choose to involve debt in your business. Related: Mark Cuban debunks the MYTH that debt is smart (video) If you have a question in regards to your real estate business and want expert help, please email info@CalibrateRE.com and you could be featured on a future podcast episode! This weekend will be the first distinctly Palm Sunday sanctuary service LIVE IT has had in years. The message of Palm Sunday is very unique – the unorthodox kingship of Jesus. This week's theme is “Rising Out of Earthly Glory” as we look at Matthew 21:1-11.

This week's theme is “Rising Out of Arrogance.” If there's one Christ-like attribute I'd like St. Marcus to be known for, it might be humility. Morality is good, but you can be moral and arrogant. There are lots of moral Mormons, Muslims, and non-religious people. But any performance-based religion will logically lead to a certain level of self-righteousness or self-loathing. On the other hand, the gospel leads to humility. And Christian humility also helps develop morality. This week we'll see how the cross gives us humility of intellect, humility of power, and humble joy. Matthew 20:20-28.
