What a man! This week I was lucky enough to be joined by the founder of the Rugby Players Association, Mr Damian Hopley. Damian joined us very kindly on the morning before he flew off to the Alps to begin a charity challenge for his own charity Restart Rugby. We finish this episode by chatting all about Restart and the amazing job it has done for rugby players in the last few years. I also get the chance to pick Damian's brains about his career, and how he ended up doing what he did for 24 years. Having started as a player and captaining England at sevens, Damian was an excellent player. Sadly, however, his career was cut short by injury. After a lot of operations he was told that it wasn't the right decision to keep playing, and so he decided to from the RPA. Originally without funding, Damian wanted to help the players and look after them. This was the start of what would be the creation of one of the most important organisations involved with rugby today. I talk to Damian a lot about player welfare and two stores in particular which have dominated the press in the last few years. The story of Steve Thompson is one which is known all over due to the severity of it. Luther Burrell's is not far behind. Damian spoke incredibly about both of these two situations and if you're at all interested tune into the podcast and hear what he has to say. You won't regret it! From everyone at The Tap and Go, we'd like to say a big thank you to Damian for coming on and we wish him the best of luck on his travels and hope that he completes the challenge safely and successfully. Karl began his refereeing qualifications in January 2014 and continued to play for Harlequins while gaining experience officiating. This was made possible by the fact he never made the starting XV. Through the London Society of Referees he made his refereeing debut at the Reigate School 7s in March 2014 and since then has taken charge of a range of matches including schools, club juniors, sevens as well as local and national league clubs. Karl has refereed two A League semi-finals, Exeter v Newcastle in 2016 and Gloucester v Wasps in 2017 and made his debut in the Greene King IPA Championship in the Christmas Eve match between London Irish and Richmond. Three days later he was involved in Big Game 9 where Harlequins played Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership at Twickenham. After 169 appearances for Harlequins scrum-half Dickson announced his retirement in April and joins the Rugby Football Union's Professional Game Match Officials Team (PGMOT). Dickson said: "Over the last two years any time that I have had - a free Saturday or Sunday or even during the week - I would referee as many games as possible to get as much practice as I could. Every game you learn something new and gain increasing match sharpness. "I would always encourage players to plan for when they retire and the fact that I've been refereeing for three years already puts me in a position where I can look forward to starting with the team next season and, having refereed in a Championship game this year, hopefully officiate more at that level. I wouldn't have this opportunity unless I started when I did." In an interview to Rugby Players Association, he said refereeing at international level was his "main goal". A goal reached when in October 2020, Karl was appointed as the main referee in a friendly game between France and Wales, in the Stade de France. There's been a thawing of the relationship between New Zealand Rugby and the Players Association with a meeting in Wellington today. The two groups have been a loggerheads over the proposal for the US private equity firm to buy a 12.5 percent stake in a company which will control NZR's commercial rights. You might be able to buy a slice of the All Blacks for as little as $100, according to the investment firm behind the alternative proposal from the Rugby Players Association. As you heard the plan would see 5 percent of the NZ Rugby's commercial arm sold off via a public listing on the stock exchange meaning any New Zealander could all own a slice. The Forsyth Barr proposal values NZR's commercial assets at up to 23 percent higher than US investment company Silverlake and claims its plan carries less risk. Allegations of sabotage, half-baked ideas, shameful distractions and leading the public down the proverbial garden path. Some provincial rugby unions and New Zealand Rugby have hit out hard at a proposal being floated by the Players Association as an alternative to the Silverlake deal - the Silverlake deal would see the US equity firm buy 12.5 percent of NZR's commercial rights for about $400 million. The player's plan, backed by investment firm Forsyth Barr, could see a smaller 5 percent stake floated on the stock exchange. South Canterbury Rugby chief executive Craig Calder has two key questions.

This counter-proposal to allow Kiwi mum and dad investors to buy into NZ Rugby is crazy. This has been mooted today by the Rugby Players Association, which is desperate to kill off the plan for Silverlake to buy 12.5% of the game. So instead, they want you and me to buy collectively 5%, through a public float, raising $191m. Which mum and dad investors are going to be silly enough to put their money into the game of rugby in NZ at the moment? You might like the idea of owning a slice of the black jersey, but you'd be throwing your cash away. The game isn't growing.  It's doing the opposite. Mums are worried about concussion.Boys are off to the basketball court instead. The audience is dwindling.  Let me remind you how NZR's books look:$34 million loss last year $7.4 million loss 2019 $1.9m loss 2018 $33.4m profit 2017 (because that was a Lions tour year) But, 2016, $7.5 m loss 2015, nearly half a million dollar loss  And so it goes.  Putting more money into a failing thing is not going to stop it failing, it'll just buy time before the money really runs out. So like I say, we'd be wasting our cash. Silver Lake's investment, though, is a different story. Now, I have reservations about the Silver Lake deal, especially after watching the way the renegade football league completely forget about core fans.  Same thing could happen here. But on the upside, from what I understand, Silver Lake's appeal is that they bring more than money. They bring the understanding of how to take All Blacks rugby beyond the local and existing fan base.Because there are untapped fans out there in the globe, NZR just doesn't know how to reach them and reap their money. But Silver Lake, because of its history investing in clubs internationally, apparently does.So Silver Lake will be also be throwing money into a loss-making enterprise. But they might have the ability to whip that enterprise into shape. We don't, you and I don't. Luring mum and dad investors into wasting money on buying into NZR is not a smart game plan.

The Rugby Players Association has labelled the $387 million Silver Lake proposal a "bad deal" which it thinks could send New Zealand Rugby deep into the red in the years to come. It hasn't yet been approved by the Rugby Players Association - which is in mediation with the Union to resolve their differences. The Chair of the Rugby Union Brent Impley has declined to be interviewed on Morning Report ahead of the decision. Speaking to Morning Report alongside former New Zealand Rugby CEO David Moffett, former Black Fern Louisa Wall said certain benefits could make the deal worthwhile. "I've been listening to quite a few of the provincial unions, and they need the investment, so if this provides an injection of cash for that infrastructure and then some ongoing revenue stream then from my perspective it's a no-brainer."

Richard Thorpe is Director of Rugby of a National 1 Rugby Club, and Performance Coach to professional athletes, executives, entrepreneurs & family office Next-Gen. Richard began his career in rugby when he joined the London Irish Academy at the age of 18. His subsequent professional career boasted over 150 Premiership rugby games for London Irish, Leicester Tigers and London Welsh. He played in the 2009 Premiership Final for London Irish, and was a part of the Leicester team that won the Premiership in 2013. A near career ending injury saw Richard leave Leicester after winning the Premiership and join London Welsh whom had just been relegated. He went on to win the Championship with London Welsh the next season, gaining promotion back into the Premiership. Richard was also a Canadian International Rugby Player, and represented Rugby Canada at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. Following his retirement from professional rugby in 2016, Richard moved into business. Having invested in property throughout his rugby career, he initially transitioned into Operations Director at RDT Invest (a principal real estate lender). Alongside this role he also became a Director of SBL Capital, his family’s private office. But it was his ongoing work with professional athletes that first moved him into coaching. Early on after his retirement, Richard began coaching professional athletes struggling with their transition into the ‘real world’. He joined Harley Street Institute, Cognacity in 2017 as an Executive Coach, and in 2018, he wound down his other business interests and established his own Performance Consultancy. He now coaches across sectors but focusses mainly on professional athletes, executives and Next-Gen. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Richard stepped back into rugby as Director of Rugby at National 1 Rugby Club Chinnor RFC Thame. Whilst a semi-professional club, Chinnor have some big ambitions, and Richard’s leadership framework is influenced by his experiences in professional rugby, business, Executive and Performance Coaching. Richard combines this role with his Performance Consultancy, and his young family in Buckinghamshire. Richard has also been a Player Representative for the Rugby Players Association, and is currently Ambassador for the Global Next-Gen Community (the successors to the Global Family Office Community). He found himself heart broken and without any support. So he set about the journey of founding the Rugby Players Association (RPA) to give back to the game and support all players who retire early or otherwise. He's a chiro, health and fitness advocate and shares his own personal strategy for health and wellbeing. Thanks Damian.

A player revolt is brewing over New Zealand Rugby's exclusion of a Pacific Islands team for next year's Super Rugby competition. The 2021 edition will again comprise of five New Zealand teams, with NZR chairman Brent Impey saying none of the Pacific bids were viable for next year's contest. That's despite Aayden Clarke of the Pacific Rugby Players Association believing the bids ticked all the boxes. And the pacific players are not the only ones upset. The country's rugby players are calling for a Pacific team to be added to Super Rugby next year. New Zealand Rugby Players Association chief executive Rob Nichol told Checkpoint they have not agreed to NZR's plans and they want a professional team in the Pacific. He talked through the issues with Lisa Owen.

It’s good to talk. That is the premise behind the Rugby Players’ Association’s (RPA) Lift The Weight campaign. Launched in February 2017 to help fight the stigma surrounding mental health issues, Lift The Weight promotes the idea that it is OK to not be OK; that if a player has a mental health problem there is help available – and it is almost certain that your fellow professionals will have experienced something similar. The campaign is headed up by Caroline Guthrie, Senior Personal Development Manager at the RPA, who talked John Portch through the confidential counselling and various other services available to its membership of 700 players and a further 400 ex-professionals. Topics touched upon include: -Lift The Weight’s efforts to cultivate a culture of openness. -The importance of using former players to share their experience of mental health issues. -The importance of storytelling and providing opportunities for individuals to connect with others. -RPA Transition Weekends and the emotional impact of big changes in a player’s life. -Educating players to recognise the symptoms and signs of depression or addictive behaviours.
