The podcast from Chiro.London, hosted by founder Craig McLean. We meet chiropractors or people of influence who have an interesting life journey to share, always intertwined with a Chiro link. We started by chatting to the whole Chiro.London team of chiropractors and along the way we expanded to include some of the past Chiro London team, international chiropractors of influence, health focused London businesses or people (yoga, Pilates, gyms, PTs, psychotherapists) and simply some cool people who have found their way through the Chiro London doors. Enjoy!
Send us a textEpisode 93 of the Chiro London podcast is a flashback to some archive audio I found from an interview on the BBC 5 Live late news show on a day where the news was all about the Queen having low back pain. She was unable to open the new Arsenal Emirates Stadium because her back wouldn't let her leave Buckingham Palace. The BBC 5 Live team called up our clinic randomly. We didn't have any direct connection. It was just a bit of a cold call and they asked if I, Craig McLean, would be willing to do an interview with the late news show at 10:00 p.m. that night hosted by Anita Anand. The first part of the interview went fairly smoothly and they just had a bit of banter and conversation around the Queen's back and back pain in general and how it has a big impact on the Uk works force with days off for back pain. But then the interview took a turn halfway through where one of the panel members had a dodgy shoulder, neck, upper back problem. He'd been seeing a physio for months, was due to have an injection in the shoulder and so they just laid down a challenge to see what I could do for him when they were breaking for news, sport and weather. So I was up for the challenge, I took the guy out to a little reception area bench. We did a little bit of Chiro work on him and you get to hear what happened in the second part of the interview when he made the statement, "I feel better in five minutes with you than I have with months on the physio bench."This was nearly 20 years ago. I was 35 and what a laugh it was.Instagram @chirolondonpod

Send us a textAnna was very new to chiropractic but in the lead up to a huge ultra marathon event the Spartathalon, the 246km race from Athens to Sparta, her body went into melt down. It was only a month out from the event and she sought help from us at Putney Chiro. This episode is in 3 parts. 1. the race review, from the time she arrived in Athens to when she crossed the finish line, one of only 200 of the 400 people who completed the 2024 edition of the race in searing heat over 2 days (34 hours of non stop running)2. the review of the month leading up to the event. From when she passed/blacked out with a huge headache and back pain and ended up in hospital. After they were unable to find a medical cause, she sought help, after a recommendation, from a chiropractor. We follow this journey over the month leading up to leaving for the event. 3. the examination of how Anna felt chiropractic treatment worked for her and helped get her to the start line. Send us a textLong overdue chat with Melissa who is more committed to the development of the profession in the UK than most chiropractors are. She is the executive advisor to the United Chiropractic Association and has been involved with the UCA for 21 of its near 25 years existence. She is the brains and energy behind UK's biggest gathering of chiropractors the UCA CE seminar. She runs a Chiropractic Assistant training program called 'The Vital CA' and a Women in Chiropractic Seminar. So good to hear her origin story of how she got involved with chiropractic and it aligns well with the UCA origin story. She's also married 2 chiropractors and has 6 kids, 3 of whom are studying chiropractic or have recently graduated. Send us a Text Message.Great to have another chat with Guy Riekeman, truly an elder statesman of the chiropractic profession. We first had a conversation in 2021 when we covered most of Guy's legacy for the chiropractic profession and I'd recommend you give this a listen as well as the current episode. However today is all about how the role of the chiropractor has changed over the years. We start by exploring the different ways chiropractors have educated their patients. It started with brochures, then patient lectures, then in clinic video tapes and now he has a new optimal health promotion app that has launched in the USA. From their website this is what its all about...'My Lifestyle iQ is a content-rich Remote Patient Engagement App that allows you to manage critical areas of health and prevention.''It is self-directed and can also be used to enhance in-office care by integrating multiple health domains, including Exercise, Nutrition, Brain Health, Positive Psychology, and the six areas of Functional Preventative Health.'Melissa and the UCA in the UK are looking into how UK docs can get involved in using the app. Have a listen to what it's all about and get in touch with Melissa if you are keen to give it a test in the UK. Thanks for listening Instagram @chirolondonpod
We follow Kat's journey from being one of the groups top 10% chiropractors to now being a coach helping others in the Chiro One set up perform at their best. Bailey our CA worked with her for 5 years in Chicago, thanks for the introduction. Instagram @chirolondonpod
Great chat with Laurence, who, it could be argued is afraid of what a cosy and comfortable life looks like. I loved hearing about the early days with the Wellness Guys, (a before its time podcast about wellness - not chiropractic). We follow his life from being a Chiro in Perth, to a Chiro coach in Sydney to 2 years ago again moving and ending up in Portugal. As a chiropractic coach he loves helping you make decisions you didn't even know you needed to make. Thanks Laurence for sharing that heart wrenching story about your father-in-laws life changing accident and how it has shaped your life and decisions from then on. Recorded minutes before a gathering of UK chiropractors in the Putney clinic in London, enjoy...Instagram @chirolondonpod
Summary Loved the chat with Jess Hambly, the Aussie chiro who has been in the UK for 6 years but just recently joined the Chiro.London team. She has 16 years experience, is a doula (birth partner) and has a super strong chiropractic philosophy. We signed off the week with a glass of rose and a chat about all things health and chiropractic. Summary of what was discussed. What is chiropractic , Jess's elevator pitch. Jess Hambly the chiropractor, her story from the beginning to now. Jess the professional associate - her opinion on why life as an associate is better than being a practice owner, given the right environment. Bourbon v Cognac - blind tasting live on the podUnpopular opinions: challenging the germ theory of disease in a post covid world, how exposure does not always equal infection. Definition of health - Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.Jess's past roles as a doula and how its helped her understand and help more pregnant women. Jess and her coaches/mentors - how its helped her navigate 16 years as a chiropractor. You can find Jess in our Fulham Clinic or on instagram @dr_jesschiroInstagram @chirolondonpod
Loved this chat with Nimrod Mueller. This podcast episode essentially is about two things. 1. levelling up your chiro philosophy to a new unknown chiro philosophy 'gaming' level that I didn't know existed. 2. Unpacking the day I spent with Nimrod and some of the UK leaders of chiropractic plotting course for Chiro in the UK and discussing the next event taking place in March 2024. If you don't now him, Nimrod is an Aussie chiropractor who graduated from Sydney college, Australia, practiced in the UK, then 10 years back in Sydney and now in Barcelona. If you haven't heard Nimrod speak he's one of the cleanest thinking docs and clearest communicators of chiropractic around. He's been politically active in the Aus and more recently he has teamed up with Mark Postles and become a coach at Quest. If you are keen to get involved in the next chiro meet up just email Nimrod and the details are....- Chiro meeting in London, March 24th - my email: nimrodmueller@gmail.com- my blog: nimrodmueller.wordpress.com- Quest www.questchiropracticcoaching.comInstagram @chirolondonpod
Loved this chat with Martin Harvey, one for the chiropractors, I (Craig McLean) was in London 2ºC he was in Melbourne 30ºC and we covered in one episode so many ways to engage better with your clients to enable you to provide better service which naturally will encourage people to stay with you longer. At the beginning, after setting the scene, we tackle the question as to whether it's appropriate to encourage people to be life long chiropractic patients. Some in the profession suggest it's not appropriate and we should be able to teach/train/coach all people out of a problem and dis-engage with them as soon as possible or you are just ripping people off. We came to the conclusion that with todays stressful lifestyles and peoples desire to be as healthy as possible there is a need and desire by many to add chiropractic to their healthy lifestyle choices hence it is appropriate to some people. So listen on to find out things to do during your 1st, 2nd or routine visits that can help you engage better with your clients. Martin is an expert at helping us communicate more effectively to help people move from focus on pain to prevention and eventually performance. Spoiler alert - all about building bridges from where the person is at or focused and bridging to the possibilities of a different paradigm. Thanks Martin here are some links to Martin's work. Craig McLean, your host, welcomes Adrian Wenban, chiropractor and head of Barcelona College of Chiropractic. Following on from our last episode where a recently graduated student from both RMIT and Barcelona filled us in on the differences between the two programs. We ask Adrian about the history of the Barcelona college, when it started, how big it is, how many students per year, but mainly how the ethos of the education is true to the origins of the chiropractic profession, keeping the students focused on the founding principles of the profession. He expands on this to explain how three main techniques are taught, the students are hands on from year one and its not discouraged to discuss the term subluxation and DD Palmer. He encourages all of his students to find and develop their own personal philosophy around health, healing and chiropractic. We talk about the recent RMIT situation in Melbourne Australia, where without warning or consultation the program was closed down and the profession lost 140 graduates a year. He has an opinion on where that program went wrong. Hope you enjoy this episode, Adrian and I have history and he reminded me that he actually worked in Putney Chiropractic back in the 1990's before I took over ownership. Instagram @chirolondonpod
Isaac reached out after finishing chiro college in Barcelona and after finding a little bit about his story I thought it would be a journey others may enjoy. He started chiro school at RMIT Melbourne Australia 6 years ago during the hardest hit covid years eventually finishing his studies at Barcelona College of Chiropractic. He's in the UK at the moment awaiting to sit the GCC test of competence and looking to work in the UK. The news that RMIT is closing its doors to new chiropractor students in 2024 made me want to find out what is happening downunder, at the place I trained. Isaac shares some insight into life at RMIT and how it compares to the Barcelona college experience. Here's the link to the Martin Harvey Pod with Phil Embrall about the RMIT situation.Isaac is a 3rd generation chiropractor, son of Wayne Whittingham and Melissa Sandford (UCA fame). We've asked Tom Mackay to come back and record his 3rd episode on the chiro.london pod with host Craig Mclean. He's just back from running a sub 2h:30min marathon in Berlin and at 2:26 it was a pb by 8 minutes. It took him 20 marathons and a load of life lessons along the way to find a way to conquer his nemesis time. This episode was recorded in London but we were joined by fellow chiropractor Ravi Ruder who dialled in from Sydney Australia. (Tom was training in Sydney in the lead up to the marathon)How was this achieved? Tom outlines how he tamed his nervous system feedback during training and racing. Not the direction I anticipated the conversation to go but really interesting to see how he tackled the daunting task. He outlines his 16 week lead up to the race and how he hit all the sessions on point set by his coach. He discusses how he uses a chiropractor for injury prevention and as a sounding board to have the confidence to push through some mega hard training sessions. Big shout out to Doc Bryan Thirsk in Putney Chiropractic Tom's usual chiro while in London. What an episode, especially if you are into running be it as a beginner or a marathon runner. But even if you are not into running, this is a story of perseverance and commitment setting out a plan to achieve a goal when others would have given up and started their golf careers. We cover the shoe wars and Tom has an opinion about how much difference shoe technology makes to running times at present. Instagram @chirolondonpod
Episode 78: Financial health episode. The aim was to provide some really useful information to chiropractors, anyone who is self employed or business owners about a topic that may be perceived as a bit dull. If you make it through this episode you will walk away with valuable tools to make your financial life much easier and provide a clear path to building wealth and saving tax. We start by defining what is wealth? We tackle the concept of why 'profit' is often a dirty word in healthcare. Then we cover the below topics....Financial servicesAccountants and IFAs - differences and how do you find a good one? How much do you need to earn to warrant using an IFA?Given the slice they take from the investments why should we use them over just winging the investments ourselves?Wealth planning and cash flow forecasting.Self employment.Being a sole trader vs starting a company (we run through the tax brackets)Tax planning ISA's, Pensions and other efficient ways to save tax as a high earner PropertyMortgages and buying property (more complicated when self employed)Renting vs Owning a property You can find Tom here Tom.Grunsell@westminster-wealth.comhttps://www.westminster-wealth.com/tom-grunsellThese details will be important if you make it towards the end of our chat for a chance to win free beer....Thanks Tom and Westminster for sponsoring this episode of the pod, hope you find the content useful. Listen in to episode 77 where myself, Craig Mclean and Doc Conor Ward ‘the health elevator' discuss heart rate variability (HRV), what is it and why do we measure it? What effects does chiropractic have on HRV, your nervous system and your overall health. Lastly what is whoop / other wearable health tech devices that measure HRV, our overall strain/stress and recovery scores and how can they add to the body of scientific evidence to support how healthy lifestyle choices including a visit to the chiropractor can positively impact your overall health and wellbeing. Early research on chiro and HRV in the link below, we need more but let's keep chatting about it and inspiring a larger body of evidence on the topic. https://www.cjaonline.com.au/index.php/cja/article/view/178Instagram @chirolondonpod
Welcome to Katelyn McGregor who is a chiropractor, mother of two, married to Andy McGregor a great Chiro a mate of mine, business owner and part of a private midwifery offering. We discuss loads about being pregnant as a chiropractor, following your own advice, preparing your body, how long should you practice for before maternity leave, giving yourself time for the best possible experience, preparing yourself financially for the inevitable time out as either a self employed chiro or practice owner. Then Katelyn shares some professional experience both as a chiro and as a member of a private midwifery team. How best to help your clients or patients. I don't believe we chatted for 90 mins, it's a long one and quite a niche topic but I hope you enjoy and find some insight from our ramblings. Instagram @chirolondonpod

Episode 74: we meet Simon Billings a chiropractor with a special dedication to nutrition. I've wanted to get Simon on for ages so we can discuss simple ways to decrease systemic pro inflammatory states. The sort of thing that does no favours to anyone who is in pain, esp that reactive random joint inflammatory stuff that chiropractors see regularly. But more than that inflammation is a natural and good thing your immune system does to heal and fight off attacks in the body. However when not balanced it can create havoc - auto immune, IBS, eczema, etc..We break it down to ways you can balance your inflammatory response using 1. Lifestyle factors 2. Nutrition (food)3. Key supplements Hope you enjoy - some great content in here chiropractors can use immediately in practice or everyone can use to help improve your health and well-being.Find Simon here https://inhealthsupplements.co.uk/https://www.academyofchiropracticnutrition.com/http://www.integrativecare.co.uk/Instagram @chirolondonpod
Hosted by Craig Mclean it was time to upgrade the pod, so we headed to Brewdog Brewery in London Waterloo and recorded this episode in their Podcast Project, a professional studio for podcasters with Docs Georgie and Sydney on their 2nd anniversary of working with us at Chiro London. You'll find Georgie in our Fulham office and Sydney in Tooting. We cover loads that will be of interest to Chiropractors, patients and new graduate chiros. It's especially useful for those about to embark on their own journey as chiros. You hear about their reasons for become chiropractors, insight into covid life as a chiro student during a pandemic, things they learned in their first two years as a chiropractor with us at chiro london, some successes and some mistakes they made along the way. Hope you like the new sound from the pro set up at Brewdog. Sound quality was mega and I had loads of buttons to press that I had no idea exactly what they did. Obviously a beer and burger was needed to help us recover from this episode. Enjoy....Instagram @chirolondonpod
October 2015 was when Jamie Murray first made an appointment at Putney Chiropractic, after googling chiropractors who work with athletes. Seven years later he still is on the Putney Chiro table whenever he's not travelling the world on the pro tennis circuit to help him prevent injury and promote optimal performance. Craig McLean had a chat to him at his most recent visit as he spared us 15 minutes of his time. He's a massive advocate of chiro work and chooses chiropractic to maintain a healthy body as it undergoes massive stress each time he's on court. Dr Bryan Thirsk is his main chiro and they've forged a great relationship over the years. Whenever he can Jamie is suggesting others should try chiro, be it on the world tennis circuit or closer to home. We hope you enjoy this short episode. Instagram @chirolondonpod

We wanted to introduce the first year chiropractic students at London South Bank University to the founding principles of chiropractic philosophy. This is a recording of the chat we had with a small group of them in a cafe in Putney. We covered the difference between chiro, osteo and physio. We introduce them to the concept of innate intelligence and healing, the vertebral subluxation complex and DD & BJ Palmer the founder and developer of chiropractic and we talk about the neurology of the chiropractic adjustment.
Jake Cooke, a chiropractor with a Masters in Musculoskeletal Neuroscience reminds me about the mechanics and neurology behind how a chiropractic adjustment works. Kate literally had no idea I was about to record a conversation with her as we drove to the Lions of Chiropractic seminar together. I promised to not do any karaoke but half way through we were joined by Fleetwood Mac and ended the chat with some Boni Jovi. Had loads of fun making this, enjoy!Kate joined us 4 years ago and at her interview knew nothing about chiropractic, 4 years on she is head of our Tooting clinic, a champion of chiropractic and thriving as its manager. Listen in to her journey.
This episode is one for chiropractors and chiropractic assistants equally. Vismai agreed to allow us to record an in house training session for twenty members of our team held at Putney Chiropractic. Over the course of the 3 hour session we work through ways to better engage with our clients both as chiropractors and CAs. The better we care for our clients the more likely they are to adopt chiropractic care as part of their healthy living strategy.
Meet Alex Williams our sports rehab therapist from our Richmond clinic. He's been with us for over 5 years and provides a great service complementing our chiropractic care. Mac and I sat on the bed at the end of a 7 day training camp in Mallorca. We discuss how you can improve your performance on a bike by measuring your efforts - firstly just with heart rate analysis, then with the aid of a powermeter. It starts as a novice guide and evolves into helping the more experienced bike athlete. Mac has been a coach at TrainSharp for years and has helped me as my coach for numerous recent seasons.
Greg Sendell, I've known for years, but I never really understood the journey he was on attempting to conquer the UTMB, the 172 km (with 10,000 of altitude gain) non stop lap of Mt Blanc in Chamonix. He took the time to chat with me piecing together the mission it was to prepare his body and mind for such a massive event. He covers training, preparation events, alternate exercise in the build up, how he became vegan in the process, how he uses the chiro to help keep him balanced, mental preparation and how he fits it in with family commitments.

Martine Beswick starred in both the 1963 Bond: From Russia With Love and the 1965 Bond: Thunderball. I'm happy to say she is still a Bond fan and she has quite some insight into life when the Bond franchise was hitting it's peak. Enjoy our chat, we cover Bond movies, her Hammer movies (she was a scream queen also) and how she has kept so healthy and well into her now 80s, although she lived the full on life through the 1960s. We then change pace and discuss how she has kept so healthy into her 80s, what are her secrets to ageing gracefully? Thanks Martine.
I first met Amin Momen of Momentum ski around 15 years ago, brought together by my love for skiing and his cool event the city ski championships. Amin moved his business to Putney only months before the lockdowns and travel bans started, it was a tough time for him and his business and he talks us through how he coped - diversifying, doing lockdown DJ sessions online on a Friday night, giving up half his new office space to create a really successful cafe in Putney, setting up local events, etc...He also began a new podcast bringing his extensive list of celebrity contacts together to talk about their skiing and music passions. We talk about how chiro has helped him over the years, how we provided chiro support for three City Ski racing events back in the day and how we should get back on it for his 2022 event in Switzerland. We end things off with some travel tips for the future. Find Momentum Travel here his Off Piste Podcast here Thanks Amin.
Grow old. Get fast. Don't die. In Phil's words, the Midlife Cyclist's author, these three things encapsulates exactly what the book is about. We are living as the first generation of human beings who have exercised heavily after the age of 40. The book looks into the effect of exercise on our heart, hormones and musculoskeletal system. We evolve some ideas of how to stay healthy and injury free after the age of 40. This book contains some great do's and don'ts for the cyclist both those starting out after being exercise silent and plenty for the hard core lifetime cyclist. We are joined by the books biggest fan, Guy Pearson of Pearson cycles fame. He is currently injured and having had the longest time off the bike he can ever remember, reading this book has helped him put many things into perspective. For those that don't know me, Craig McLean, I'm not only a chiropractor but a nearly 50 year old amateur racing cyclist who's been riding with team 'Nuun Sigma Sports' for nearly a decade. Another midlife cyclist who still regularly competes with the upcoming future GB stars of cycling, both on the velodrome and road. I hope you enjoy the chat recorded in Cyclefit HQ Covent Garden. We had a chat to Tom MacKay in episode 56 about marathon preparation and what you have to do to aim for a sub 2:30 marathon time. 8 days ago he ran the London marathon and we hear how his race went. Did he manage to achieve his target, how did he perform on the day, what is next in the future. Enjoy
Thanks Tom for taking the time to share your thoughts and words about your journey with endurance and marathon running. Well done on the 1:10 London 'Big Half' half marathon and good luck with your quest of a sub 2:30 marathon at the delayed October London Marathon. We cover running, training, pacing, preparation and kit (especially shoes). Tom's a regular on the chiro table - he shares his views on chiro and how it's helped him over the years. He also shares his views on yoga and stretching - as someone who is fairly inflexible he opens up to me about his frustrations with yoga and how he found his thing. Finishing off with some insight into pro tennis from his summer job looking after the seeded tennis pro's at the Wimbledon Championships. Lastly a cool story about Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy.
Meet Wilf, 27 years old who's back pain it turned out was the result of Hodgkins lymphoma. A journey that took over a year to diagnose, including a visit to me at Putney Chiro. We walk through his journey including 12 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, hair falling out and concerns he may never make it through. I spoke to him in July 2021 and his chemo started January 2021. Thanks Wilf for sharing your story and congratulation on beating the darkness. A great episode for chiropractors as we talk about all the red flags that eventually were there and a good reminder for us all, that sometimes it's not neuro or mechanical. Also if you are not a chiro, this is simply an uplifting story of beating cancer.Chiro London Insta account showing his PET CT scan before and after results as discussed
Profeet and Chiro London have had a 20 year relationship, back to when they opened in 2001. In this episode we meet Profeet's founder Shula who gives us some background into how and when she and her late husband Hamish started the business. Then I head over to the store in Fulham, SW London, UK and do an in-shop interview with Tom their lead running tech. We cover basic problems that can go wrong with the foot, knee and whole body biomechanics, what you can do about it at home and why a running analysis and/or a full 3D body biomechanics check up is a good idea. We hope you enjoy this podcast which is all about running, skiing and other sports. After this you will never buy an online trainer again. Check out Profeet on www.profeet.co.uk

Welcome back to episode 50! Dr Guy Riekeman, we catch up with him from Detroit, Michigan although I thought he was going to be in Puerto Rico his second home, long story. Guy studied chiropractic at Palmer College in the 1970's, ran a chiropractic research and coaching company helping 7000 chiropractors worldwide. He then paused for 4 years on the beach and was a bum in California, before stepping back in the game to become the chancellor of Palmer College and later the chancellor of Life University Chiropractic schools. Guy shares some great stories about his life and when compared to a movie, his film is winding its way towards a grand finale. We look at what pivot points in his life made the biggest impacts to the legacy will leave behind. You've never seen a fitter looking 70 year old, so he's not checking out yet and his current day job is developing a health tracking app for chiropractors called My Lifestyle IQ and an online/virtual chiropractic degree. Thanks for the chat Guy.

We then get his tips on how to give back to your local community, he is forever helping other at soup kitchens, refugee camps or Brixton Prison. We end with details of why he loves a trip to the chiropractor and how his kids have seen some cool changes with a visit to his osteopath. Enjoy.

Conor Ward, is known as 'the health elevator' and we jump on for a ride to the top floor, while discussing goal setting, what is a legacy goal, what did we learn from the Chiro London coaching program delivered in Jan 2021 to 15 of our chiropractors. Great to hear how well his Lions of Chiropractic program is going and finally some words of hope and wisdom for 2021.
