Justin Ganschow, Business Development Manager for Caterpillar Safety Services joins Libby for today's episode. Justin has been in the industry for almost 20 years, and, as a result, has a wealth of stories and presentations to offer. In this episode, he shares a story about the human side of safety and about being an intentional safety leader.    Episode Highlights: Several years ago, Justin was working with a company that, after suffering a pretty traumatic injury involving six of their employees, embarked on a safety culture improvement journey with him Part of the journey was developing cross functional teams to build meaningful safety activities that govern how everybody worked in the field, shop, and office Many of the field workers were not excited about taking part in these RJ was one field worker who had grown up in the industry, and who began sharing his ideas about safety, gaining the attention and support of his colleagues and leaders alike. Eventually, RJ decided to go back to school and get a degree in safety because he was now in a culture that supported him and his peers, and really empowered them to make the changes needed to take ownership of safety RJ's best friend and longtime colleague, Josh, didn't really support RJ's decision to do this Years later, though, Justin was pleasantly surprised to see that Josh paid his own way  to support RJ as he presented at an executive safety leadership summit in a different city - Josh now saw RJ as his ally and advocate within the company  The lesson that Justin feels can be learned from this is that, while safety is often viewed as something that needs to be enforced by ‘safety cops',  it doesn't have to be that way. It can be a lot more effective when we have courageous safety leaders.  RJ cared so deeply that he changed his life to have the backs of the men and women that worked around him - a lesson that we can all take to heart    Toolbox Talk Discussion Questions:   In this episode Justin shares about RJ who was initially reluctant to participate in the meetings, but later became really involved in safety trainings. How can we reach those who are initially resistant to participate? How can this story encourage us to engage in cross-department safety discussions? Does anyone have a story about how their safety mindset has changed over their career? Quotes: “I've had the distinct privilege of working with a lot of companies and different industries over the years to improve safety, culture and leadership abilities.” “After suffering a pretty traumatic injury that injured six of their employees, this organization embarked on a safety culture improvement journey with us.” “RJ… had seen safety programs come and go in the past, but he decided he would try it. And throughout the week, he kept leaning in and leaning in and speaking up, giving us his ideas about how to develop this new safety process for safety training.” “I saw him come alive and realize that his voice mattered. And his ideas were then adopted by his peers. They were cheered on by leadership.” “It was about a year later that I got a phone call from RJ. And he shared with me that he decided he was going to go back to school and get a degree in safety.” “That was amazing to me that someone who had spent their whole career in the trades, was going to, midlife, go back to school to support the people that they work with every day.” “So many times safety is viewed as something that needs to be enforced… it can be a lot more effective when we have courageous safety leaders.” “This is somebody he now saw as his ally, as his advocate, within the company.” “I hope that's a lesson that all of us can take to heart when we show up on the job site. Are you there for policies and procedures? Are you there for your people?” “At the end of the day, safety is about people, it's about the 24/7. Are we living it? Are we really owning it?” “Safety leadership is about doing, it's about being proactive, and it's about people. It's about caring.” Links: National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association website

ESG – a holistic concept that has roots dating back to the 1960s, has evolved over the decades gaining more traction in recent years within the corporate sustainability context. Referring to the environmental (‘E'), social (‘S') and governance (‘G') pillars within the sustainability framework, they are key to addressing the impacts of corporate activities and investments on people and the planet. With the current lack of unified reporting standards, definition and many frameworks influencing the ESG space, we gathered a network of experts and an all-star panel from different industries, contexts and trajectories to discuss the challenges and highlight opportunities around ESG reporting – from regulation and standardization to quality data collection and the measurement of impact. This think tank was run by Goumbook in partnership with Emex and hosted by Jumeirah Group in their flagship hotel Burj Al Arab on 3rd of June, 2022.  It included a presentation by Daniel Gribbin - VP of Sustainability and ESG at Emex, and a panel discussion that was moderated by Tatiana Antonelli Abella, featuring Mohamad El Khalil - Director of Prudential Supervision at DFSA, Mariam Alqubaisi - Head of Sustainability and Business Excellence at Etihad, Adrienne Doolan - CEO of Green Touches and Board Member of UN Global Compact Network UAE, and Ashraf Abdelkhalek - Sustainability, Health and Safety Leader for Gulf Countries at Schneider Electric.

He's super inspirational, and motivational, and after you hear the episode you are going to feel just as amped as we do after spending time with him. Let us tell you about Buddy Brooks: Buddy Brooks is a public safety leader. Recently he was sworn in as one of the youngest Deputy Fire Chiefs in Eastern North Carolina. Buddy often speaks publicly about leadership. We have some things in common with how we wanted to risk it all to be near the ocean, and we are going to talk about that. Not only is he one of the most positive people we know, but he is also a walking motivational speaker without prompting. He truly is a natural-born leader. On a personal note, Buddy is a speed reader, a Parrothead, a beach lover, and has an oddly strong distaste for mayonnaise. We're not joking about that last part. In this episode we chat about: Background/thoughts on what led Buddy to become a leader Managing mindset, ways to reduce negative thoughts Who inspires Buddy as a leader and what motivates him to be a great leader The last book he read and what book he recommends everyone read How he and his wife were determined to do what it took to live at the beach Goals he has for himself: professionally and personally The mental health crisis in the fire industry Values he wants to pass along to his son Buddy answers our 10 rapid-fire questions, and the most important question, "What does a life well lived mean to you?" The start of the 2021 school year was unlike any other our children have ever experienced. Challenging events throughout 2020, including COVID, meant children were carrying much more than the contents of their school bags on their shoulders as they approached the classroom at the start of Term 1. Today we take the time to discuss the impacts of COVID on childrens mental health in the short, middle and long term with our special guest, Chanel Nesci. Chanel is a Registered Psychologist and Psychological Health and Safety Leader at BUPA with almost ten years of experience working in Mental Health. We ask Chanel questions including: What are your thoughts on the impact of COVID on children's mental health? What are some of the positives children can take away from the last 12 months? Starting with preschoolers? Primary Schoolers? Teens? Do you think that this time has enabled the ability to form even stronger bonds with parents? Do you think this opportunity has developed a greater appreciation for their friends? Teachers? Do you think the additional rules and regulations COVID has brought to our lives has helped children become better behaved? Addressing the cons, do you think children find it much more difficult to express how they are feeling? How do parents and caregivers identify signs of stress? How do the signs of stress differ child to child? What can parents do to help this? What affects does Social isolation have on kids? What's your thoughts on children's abilities to initiate and form robust conversations these days? And the potential lack thereof to form deep connections to others through this? How can parents keep an eye out on any signs that your children might need more support? Colin talks to Jessy Gomes, an award-winning safety leader and member of the IOSH council, with a proven track record of commercial success and development, including management of construction design, health and safety, processes, communications and people. Jessy discusses the importance of challenging the safety sector when it comes to crucial issues such as diversity, especially in the construction industry, the importance of mentorship and guidance, and how she visualises the future of safety in the workplace. KEY TAKEAWAYS As safety professionals we must always be learning, but more importantly, we should also work to build upon the lessons we have been taught so far. Refine our knowledge and we build our skills. Construction is renowned as being a male-dominated sector. It will take a creative female perspective in order to disrupt this balance, but the benefits will be enormous. We need a far more holistic view when it comes to the safety industry. Effective safety is built upon better communication and better collaboration. Organisations must not be complacent. We must make ourselves uncomfortable in order to learn more. When we step outside of our comfort zones, our sense become heightened. Therefore, we must challenge ourselves regularly in order to maximise our potential. BEST MOMENTS 'This is where I really learned about the safety culture' 'Learning is such an important part of life' 'We must understand that we can change the landscape of health and safety' 'The safety industry is huge number of individual cogs that make up a bigger machine' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449     Jessy Gomez LinkedIn - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/jessy-gomes IOSH - https://iosh.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.' www.KevBurns.com Safety leadership is not just for those with a title. On this episode, we will talk about 6 Ways To Become A Respected Safety Leader. To become a safety leader, you have to first understand what safety leadership is not: it is not safety management. Since there is no requirement to be in management to be a leader, then it only makes sense that you don't have to be in safety management to be a safety leader. Safety leadership is not just for those with a title. Safety leaders can be found on the front-lines too. They are willing to coach and inspire better safety performance through mosty, their example. You see, being a leader starts with being willing to go first. The first person to do something is the leader. Everyone else follows. But to go from safety person to safety leader, requires a mindset shift. So with that in mind, let's explore six mindset shifts that can cause you to become a better safety leader: - Kevin Burns is a management consultant, safety speaker and author of "PeopleWork: The Human Touch in Workplace Safety." He is an expert in how to engage people in safety and believes that the best place to work is always the safest place to work. Kevin helps organizations integrate caring for and valuing employees through their safety programs.

In every job, regardless of position or title, there are people who are effective at the job. And there are people who may be qualified for the job, but not terribly effective. Being qualified for the job doesn't automatically guarantee that you're going to be effective at it. You may have seniority, or your certification, or a love of safety. These don't guarantee that you'll be effective at the job. The job of a safety person isn't to be a hero or to save people's lives. The biggest part of the job really is communication. Safety people and supervisors are supposed to influence, coach and mentor employees to make good decisions. To become much more effective and make a bigger difference, understand that your people don't need your protection. They need your guidance.

The Safety Leader Podcast

Safety Leader? What is that? Let's start with what a safety leader is not. It's not a position, it's not a title. It's not a management position. It's not bestowed upon you because you passed a few safety courses or because you are a certified safety professional. And it's not something that you will ever be called. Safety Leader is made up of two parts: safety and leader. Safety is an attitude. It's a way of life, a mindset, a philosophy and a set of personal values combined with how much you believe that you are of value. People who believe that they are worth something, that they make a valuable contribution or they have a purpose for living, want to protect that which they do and who they are. They will adopt a safety mindset to protect themselves against anything that would harm them or the people they care about. Oversimplified, but that is safety - the attitude. Leader is the second part. It comes from leadership which is also an attitude. Management is a position. Leadership is an attitude. You don't have to be in management or in a position of authority in order to be a leader. Leadership isn't about you, it's about them. Everyone else outside of you. Good leaders are focused on building other leaders; people who can make a difference in the lives of others. So when you combine this outward focus with safety to form the phrase safety leader, you are speaking about people who believe in safety, believe they and others are worth protecting and caring for and will work alongside to offer mentorship and coaching to build best performances in safety.   Alright, so what are we going to do with this podcast and what can you expect to get out of each episode. First, I make a solemn promise to you to keep each of these episodes short. I vow to not take 10 minutes of solid information and cram it into a 60-minute podcast and then fill the rest with fluff and filler. No, I know you're busy and so I promise to not take up a ton of your time.  How did the Safety Leader Podcast come about? In talking with quite a few of my clients and connections on social media, I came to realize that many of my Blog readers worked on the road, in remote locations sometimes, from their mobile offices a lot and didn't have ten minutes to sit down and watch a video or read a few blog posts in succession. But you drive to work and you drive home from work. And sometimes you drive FOR work. It's those miles that can be made useful, where you can improve your skills as a supervisor or safety person to get better at helping others to be better at safety. As a safety communications and management consultant, I've seen that when frontline supervisors buy into safety as one of their personal values, they better understand their role in keeping the workplace safe. The Safety Leader Podcast introduces the next level in safety. Workplace safety lies in the relationship between the frontline employee, the employee's immediate supervisor, and the bond among the entire crew. Supervisors are uniquely positioned to bring workplace safety past compliance and across the threshold to where safety is personal. When trust and respect are the tools of frontline supervisors, their ability to personally influence frontline employees is deeply improved.  I believe that the battle in safety is at the front line, not the head office. All the certified safety officers, VPs, and safety managers in the world can't have the impact on safety of a single supervisor or front-line safety person and a solid crew. A rules-based approach to management doesn't have the reach of smart coaching and mentoring for ensuring safety. Quoting the rule book, finding fault, and barking orders isn't leadership. It isn't even good management. Over the past few years, I began to see clearly was that the relationship between a frontline supervisor and a frontline employee is critical to the health and safety of an organization. It's where the culture of an organization is made and reinforced. Organizations thrive at the level of teamwork, camaraderie, solid work ethic and values. A good supervisor will keep a team together, while a poor supervisor will turn over staff. We all know people who've left jobs because of a lousy boss, even at good companies. Sadly, most frontline supervisors ascend to their positions by virtue of being the most senior guy on the job. A lot of these supervisors don't have any particular management or supervisory skills, yet they're the ones in charge on site. They're the ones who are supposed to keep the team together, keep them motivated and focused, make the right decisions, keep their crews safe. To get safety right, they need to be armed with more than just a rule book of procedures. No one wants a safety cop looking over their shoulder while they work. Supervisors need the personal skills to become centers of influence. I commit to you to give you my best ideas, tips and strategies to help make your job easier and more effective. That's what the Safety Leader Podcast is all about. I look forward to spending time with you.
