In 1979 a 19-year-old woman was found brutally beaten and stabbed to death near what was then the Sahara Hotel near the Las Vegas Strip. For decades she remained a ‘Jane Doe' or as detectives nicknamed her, ‘Sahara Sue Doe'. In December of 2023 new DNA technology allowed a cold case detective with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department to contact a probable relative in California. The call paid off and Sahara Sue Doe became Gwenn Marie Story, a teenager from Cincinnati, Ohio who had initially planned a trip to California to find her real father. But the stop in Las Vegas with two male friends would prove deadly. Case #2, Detective Eric Ogaz with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department talks about Scott Echols, an 8-year-old boy who, in 1992, answered the door at his home late one night and mysteriously disappeared.

Today on another encore edition of The Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Cleto Escobedo III, who is the bandleader for late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! We talk to Cleto about his years growing up in Las Vegas with Jimmy when his pop, Cleto Jr. was head of a fantastic live band, Los Blues who performed for years in the lounge of the Sahara Hotel doing sets well into the early morning. A 4am slot might not seem ideal to you but both Jackie Wilson and Sammy Davis Jr. sat in with the band and none other than Elvis Presley watched from the audience. The younger Cleto tells us stories about his years growing up in Vegas and haunts like Circus Circus, The Golden Steer, The Peppermill and Battista's Hole in the Wall as well as his dads commitment to his family. Moving from the lounge to backstage butler at Caesar's Palace, it was none other than Sammy Davis Jr. who took Cleto Jr. under his wing and took care of him. Today, both father and son play in the band Cleto and the Cletones, the house band on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the stories flow fast and furious about legends they now perform with. Along the way we also hear stories about Paula Abdul, Marc Anthony, Phillips Bailey & more. It was great talking to Cleto about growing up the child of a celebrity on the Las Vegas Strip and hearing terrific stories about best friends Cleto and Jimmy who still hang together and their families camp together. Everyone has a story. Take a listen.
Randy Roberts talks about his new show “Aging Dis-Gracefully” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “Aging Dis-Gracefully” is currently at the Post Office Cafe and Cabaret now through August 29th in Provincetown, MA. We caught his fabulous new show last week and were thoroughly entertained with his theme of divas who refuse to grow old gracefully including impeccable performances from Cher, Bette Midler and more. However what makes Roberts show so outstanding is how he brings his own voice to the party. This is not a lip sync show but a Virtuoso performing in drag. Then when he concluded his show performing “The Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera in his own persona we were blown away especially thinking about the controversy all drag artists are facing in this country with the politicizing of their performances. In Key West, Florida where Randy has performed at the La Te Da Cabaret for 25 years they no longer allow anyone under 18 years old to attend even though Randy's show is totally appropriate for all ages. In “Aging Dis-Gracefully” he does address Florida being ground zero with the current culture wars specifically drag artists under attack. Yet Roberts manages to address the issue flawlessly with a tribute to Governor DeSantis in a parody entitled “He's DeSantis” to the song “It's De-Lovely” and a moving rendition of the LGBTQ power anthem “Color Out of Colorado.” We talked to Randy about his inspiration for his new show “Aging Dis-Gracefully” and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. Randy Roberts is an actor, singer, director and world-renowned female impersonator entertaining audiences for over 30 years. Hailing from Norfolk, VA he started in community theater and found a niche in female impersonation. First in small bars and clubs and then touring the country in the review “Masquerade a La Cage”. During this run he caught the eye of the producers of the long running Las Vegas drag revue “Boy-Lesque” at the Sahara Hotel and Casino. Roberts was also featured on the tenth season of NBC television's “America's Got Talent” and appeared on ABC television's “One Life To Live” as “Cher”. Randy made his film debut in the award-winning indie film “Any Day Now” starring Alan Cumming, Garret Dillahunt and Frances Fisher. Randy is currently celebrating his 25th year headlining in the Crystal Room Cabaret at La Te Da in Key West, Florida and in Provincetown at the Post Office Cafe and Cabaret where he is currently performing. Upcoming performance dates include September 22nd at the Sun Festival in Rehoboth Beach, DE & September 14th, 15th and 16th at the Crazy Coqs in London, UK. We love salon owners! We say this all the time on our show that they are the unsung heroes of our industry. Lash artists look up to brand owners and trainers but rarely do I hear praise for salon owners. It's one of those odd things in our lash culture that I can't really explain. Today we are honored to have Mo Hamil from Lash Out on our show and we dig into what it's like to be a salon owner. While salon owners are often demonized by employees in this industry most solo lash artists say they too want to be a salon owner someday. We are excited to have Mo explain her journey and give you some insights into what it's like. Our hope is that your eyes are wide open before you hire that first team member. BTW...we mention in the podcast that Mo is still selling tickets to her event in Utah called Lash Bash...but we just found out it's sold out. She does not have any tickets left to sell. So sorry. That said, LashCast and Lash Boss Radio are combining forces at IBS Las Vegas on June 25th to host a party in a suite at the Sahara Hotel. We'd love to see you there and have limited tickets to sell. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Cleto Escobedo III of Cleto and the Cletones, the house band on the late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! that also includes his famous dad, Cleto Escobedo Jr. But before he joined his son on television, Jr. began his career a San Antonio born sax player whose soul/R&B band the Dell-Tones left the lone star state and found themselves performing in Las Vegas in 1965 at Casbar Lounge at the Sahara Hotel. Renamed Los Blues, the band befriends and performs for a huge range of headliners such as Sammy Davis Jr., The Righteous Brothers, Louis Prima & Keely Smith, Duke Ellington & Don Rickles among others. The band becomes such a popular late-night attraction at 3:30am for half a decade on the Strip, they even record an album for United Artists in 1971. But by that point after fame eludes them, the band breaks up. So to stay close to his family, Cleto works at Caesars Palace beginning as a bus boy and working his way up to becoming head butler for entertainers and high rollers at the casino. Meanwhile, Cleto III is now also a sax player like his father and is touring the world with entertainers like Marc Anthony, Luis Miguel and Paula Abdul. And this is the insane part. In 2003, Cleto III's best friend & former Las Vegas neighbor, Jimmy Kimmel is named the host of their new late night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! & Cleto III is asked to put together a house band for the show, including his dad at the request of Kimmel himself. 18 years later, father and son are still performing together on the show. This episode runs the gamut with stories about old school Vegas restaurants, Cuban card dealers, performing with the Doobie Brothers' Michael McDonald on television, how Sammy Davis Jr. changed the family fortunes and touring Japan with Phillip Bailey. From late nights in the Sahara lounge to late nights on ABC television, this is Rarified Heir Podcast with Cleto Escobedo III.
My next guest is FIELDING WEST!It all began in the beginning. Who would ever believed that Fielding West was literally made in Japan. Conceived in the northern island of Hokkaido, Japan. His father, a US Air Force officer, wanted his first male child to be born in America. He was transferred to Boise, Idaho just-in-time for Fielding to arrive.Ten years later he was introduced to Magic by his grandfather who was an amateur magician. After high school, Fielding put himself through college, paying for his degree by performing in a band as a drummer and doing magic shows for children. In 1973 while selling cars and going to graduate school at night in Tallahassee, Florida, he met an unknown comedy magician named Steve Martin. That's right, the Steve Martin, before he became famous. After seeing Steve perform, he knew that he wanted to be in show business for the rest of his life. The concept of a comedy act began.Three years later he moved to Jacksonville, Florida and started his own Saturday morning children's show on television with a Post/Newsweek station, WJ XT. The name of the show was Magic Gang and was the highest rated kids show in it's time slot for two years. Not being satisfied with entertaining only children, Fielding pursued a nightclub act.A year and a half after leaving television, he put together a successful touring show called the Amazing Fielding And Company. The show included illusions and hypnosis, which for after two years led him to Las Vegas. There he met Liberace who helped Fielding get his first break by showcasing his act at the Sahara Hotel. Since then he has been working all over the world as a featured star in large production shows and as an opening act for major stars.Fielding's career has now come full circle. He has appeared on a multitude of comedy specials and popular sitcoms. His talents go far beyond stage and screen. Fielding is also a successful comedy writer for other magicians and comedians. He is well-known in the corporate market as a fantastic performer. In a course he created, called Stagecraft 101, he manages speaking seminars for young performers which teach how to speak more effectively.Released Wednesday October 28th.Season Sponsored ByMagicboxUse the discount code SHTICK at checkout for 10% of your total purchases.

It’s newly named, and completely renovated, but it’s actually the former Sahara Hotel and Casino, a place filled with history–and more than a few legends. Considered the last of the Rat Pack hotels, this site hosted performers such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, and Judy Garland (just to name a few). After closing in 2011, the SLS Hotel took over the building in 2013 and undertook massive renovations. All of this and more on this week’s episode of Travel Today from the SLS Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
