This week living legend and one of the nicest guys in metal, Sakis Tolis, returns to the show to discuss Rotting Christ's new opus, “Pro Xristou”. We explore how his approach to writing music has evolved over the course of his career and we uncover some surprising admissions about his creative process. After that, I discuss why the latest records by Göden, Vredehammer, Gatecreeper and Atrae Bilis should be on your regular rotation. On my weekly news rant, I discuss Trelldom's comeback and give you first impressions of new music by Oranssi Pazuzu, Winter Eternal, Akhlys and more. Plus Turkish black metallers, Episode XIII, step into the Into The Necrosphere independent band spotlight. ▶️SUPPORT THE BANDS FEATURED ON THIS EPISODERotting Christhttps://rottingchrist.bandcamp.com/ Episode XIIIhttps://www.instagram.com/episodexiiiband/ Atrae Billis https://atraebilisdeath.bandcamp.com/  Akhlys https://akhlys.bandcamp.com/ ▶️SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST https://youtube.com/c/IntoTheNecrosphere ▶️STREAM & DOWNLOADAmazon Musichttps://amzn.to/3epNJ4KSpotifyhttps://spoti.fi/3iKqbIPApple Podcastshttps://apple.co/38wDYhi ▶️SOCIAL MEDIAFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/intothenecrosphere  Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/intothenecrosphere    Twitterhttps://twitter.com/inecrosphere  ▶️INTO THE NECROSPHERE MERCHhttps://into-the-necrosphere.creator-spring.com▶️THE HORSEMEN OF THE PODCASTING APOCALYPSE Horrorwolf666https://thehorrorwolf666podcast.buzzsprout.com/ Everything Went Blackhttps://everythingwentblack.podbean.com/ Necromaniacshttps://necromaniacs.podbean.com/ Sol Noxhttps://www.solnoxpodcast.podbean.com/ Iblis Manifestationshttps://linktr.ee/iblismanifestationspodcast

HEAVY Music Interviews
Chain Of Command With NICK MELISSOURGOS From SUICIDAL ANGELS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersGreek metal masters of mayhem Suicidal Angels tomorrow release their eighth studio album Profane Prayer, reaffirming their growing stature as one of the leaders of the next phase of metal evolution.Since forming Suicidal Angels at just 16 years of age back in 2001, Nick Melissourgos (vocals, guitars) has overseen a changing of the guard of sorts, kicking things off with the band's debut album Eternal Domination which set the musical landscape ablaze. After being invited by Sakis Tolis of ROTTING CHRIST to do their first European tour soon after, Suicidal Angels quickly found their stride and set about laying a decimating sonic landscape in their wake, forcing people to sit up and take notice.Landing the support slot with KREATOR set about a fresh chain of events that saw Melissourgos strike up an enduring friendship with Mille Petrozza, and since then Suicidal Angels have made every post a winner.Four years in the making, Profane Prayer is already being lauded by fans and critics alike, with HEAVY spending some time with Melissourgos earlier this week to document the rise and rise of his band."We're a thrash metal band from Athens, Greece," he declared proudly before we begin talking about the album. "We are about to release our eighth studio album and in a couple of days we hit the road for the first European tour for this album. Afterwards we go to the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. The whole booking process for the concerts is taking place, so we hope we can get to other markets as well. We had some plans for 2020 to come to Australia, but due to the COVID situation we couldn't make it."We ask Nick how the nerves are kicking in just days out from release."A bit, to be honest," he admitted. "Before this pandemic stopped the whole planet… it actually hit us quite hard because we had just released our previous album Years Of Aggression on August 2019, and we were about to do a huge, extensive tour. As I said before, we were even planning on going to Australia and the USA and Canada markets, places we hadn't been before. Two and a half years we were off the road, and then we tried to do some small tours mostly here and in America to promote the Years Of Aggression album and gradually and slowly came back to the reality of the after COVID situation. It took longer than usual to release a new album, but it was because of the situation, and now we're quite anxious and nervous but also excited with this release. We really hope to get back on the road and the life we used to have."In the full interview, we ask Nick to go deeper into the musical side of Profane Prayer, how much they experimented with their sound on the album, how it differs to previous releases, how much growth Suicidal Angels have left in them, the early days of the band and how serious he was about it, what things he has learned about life and music over the journey, upcoming shows and more.

S7E8 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 19h00 on 22 Feb 2024.  It was touch and go with a fiber failure an hour before the show, big well done to the guys at Vodacom Fibre for sorting it out in time.  We started with a bit of ACDC and ‘Overdose' off the Let There Be Rock album and just kept on building from there. This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about was the original version of Am I Evil by Diamond Head.  You may only know the Metallica version and they have indeed made it famous, but it all started here.  I went into the story in a bit of detail because it is one of the best examples of a win–win ever.  Everyone involved scored because of this track and it really is iconic.   The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Halestorm – American BoysHinder – Homecoming QueenHell Yeah – Hell YeahHanoi Rocks – Two Steps From the Move Artists Featured:  ACDC, Bullets & Octane, Danko Jones, Mötley Crüe, Desolation Angels, Great White, Foreigner, The Eagles, ZZ Top, Theory of a Deadman, Palaye Royale, Iron Maiden Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Dio, Dire Straits, Jethro Tull, Green Day, Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, Yngwie Malmsteen, Burning Rain, Diamond Head, Hanoi Rocks, Hell Yeah, Hinder, Halestorm, Saxon, Sakis Tolis, The Rolling stones, Suicide Bombers, Volbeat, Neil Young, Tom Petty.   The Story of Rock and Roll. On this week's MetalSucks Podcast, we've got Insomnium guitarist Markus Vanhala as our guest. During our chat, we discuss how the band's latest single, “The Witch Hunter,” almost didn't make it on the new album Anno 1696. We also learn more about the short story that inspired the concept album, as well as how he felt  releasing singles to the fanbase instead of a complete EP. Speaking of EPs, we got Markus to share his favorite EP's of the 90's, how the special edition of Anno 1696 comes with an exclusive EP of bonus songs, what ideas  people feel would be “commercial suicide” working for the band, and his optimistic outlook on the future of the music industry. Also in the episode is a discussion between Petar and Sylvia, where they tackle the sad news that Ozzy Osbourne is retiring from touring due to his health issues, Steve-O pleading with Bam Margera in hopes of choosing recovery over death, their excitement over Jason Newsted working on new heavy music, and Dee Snider's comments on reunion tours being “lame.” Song: Insomnium - “The Witch Hunter” Song: Insomnium -  “White Christ” Feat. Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado.  Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell.  It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it's a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well.  Dee has done OK though.  Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!!  Joe Perry at his finest.  We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you

Finally, we reached the end of Season 5.  The final show, episode 52 went out live at 19h00 on 29 Dec 2022 on rebel Rock Radio.  At the risk of boring you all I just have to say that once again it all happened under really trying circumstances.  I hope you all appreciate the lengths I have to go through to get this show out.  The Wi-Fi has been non-existent all day, I can't even upload the MCR Rock Review.  We have more load shedding in an hour's time and I can't get onto the Rebel Rock Site so I am flying blind.  That said this show is a wrap-up of all the albums we checked out this year.  Well, not all the albums because we checked out 65 new releases this year.  Out of 157 albums added this year 65 were 2022 releases.  I did my best to play you as much as possible from these 65.  We kicked off with Halestorm and the title track of their release Back From The Dead.  From there we had Motor Sister and a track called 'Can't Get Enough'.  From there we listened to ‘Take What You Want' off Diamond Star Halos, the latest offering from Def Leppard.  We went to Germany and took a listen to Rammstein and to Sinner.  Desolation Angels out of the UK (with South African bassist Clive Pearson who used to be in a SA Metal band called Lynx back in the ‘80s) gave us a track called 'Walking On Water' off Burning Black.  We also heard from Tony Martin ex Black Sabbath and Joe Lynn Turner ex Rainbow.  Both these guys both put out strong albums in the form of Thorns and Belly of the Beast respectively.   Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed both made the cut and sounded awesome.  It was time for a bit of Metal from Soulfly and a track called 'Ancestors'.  We also heard 'Black Butterfly' from Candlemass.  After checking out some late ‘80's early ‘90s style rock from the Dead Daisies, Skid Row, and Aussie youngsters Dead City Ruins we hit the blues with our very own Dan Patlansky whose Shelter of Bones was given the No 2 spot by Blues Rock Magazine.  The South African scene was also represented by L.A. Cobra, The Devil's Party Band, Infanteria, and Diverted Disorder.    Finally, we got to the top of the list and played out with Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, and Megadeth, and the best album of 2022 according to me went to Arch Enemy with Deceivers.  We had a few minutes left so we checked out with scenes from forthcoming attraction in 2023 in the form of Blink 182 and the single they dropped months ago called ‘Edging'.  I hope to see you all for 2023 and Season 6 of The Story of Rock and Roll. PS.  Notable mentions we just didn't get to Keator, Slipknot, Soilwork, Ghost, and Machine Head, what a year for music.   Artists featured:  Halestorm, Herman Frank, Motor Sister, Def Leppard, Sinner, Rammstein, Joe Lynn Turner, Nickelback, Desolation Angels, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Eddie Vedder, Billy Idol, Alter Bridge, Tony Martin, Candlemass, Soulfly, The Dead Daisies, Skid Row, Dead City Ruins, Dan Patlansky, L.A. Episode 48 of Season 5 aired at 19h00 on 1 Dec 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was a tricky show because of the wifi signal jumping in and out.  The podcast is 100% so that is a small mercy I am thankful for.  We kicked off with a double header in the form of the first two tracks on W.A.S.P's magnum opus The Crimson Idol.  From there is was a bit of Southern Rock from Whiskey Myers and then over to Ireland for some Therapy? and a track called ‘Unbeliever' off the clritically acclaimed Troublegum.  We stayed with the late ‘80s type guitar driven rock with Badlands and a track called 'Dancing on the Edge'.  The Badlands debut album with Jake E. Lee, Ray Gillen, Eric Singer and Greg Chaisson was the first CD I ever bought and has a special place in my heart.  Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy classics ‘Killing Yourself to Live' and 'Some Day She's Going to Hit Back' were up next and then from these classics we got up to date with two albums released in the last month; Soilworks' Overgivenheten and Sakis Tolis's Among the Fires of Hell.  Mötley Crüe's track ‘Motherfucker of the Year' off Saints of Los Angeles elicited some nominations from the listeners, so I will collect a few more and we can discuss that another time.  The Offspring and Blink 182 hit the spot for the ‘90's kids.   We spent a lot of time talking Metallica, they dropped a first track off the new album 72 Seasons this week and the 2023/24 Tour is kicking off soon.  They are doing two gigs per city with different opening acts and different sets each night.  I played Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch and Mammoth WVH all of who will be part of the M72 Tour.  To end off we checked out the ladies, Taylor Momsen and Lzzy Hale and said farewell and RIP to Christine Mc Vie of Fleetwood Mac who passed away this week.  We listened to her play and sing ‘Oh Daddy' off the multi-million selling Rumours album.  SA bands were a bit thin on the ground tonight but we squoze in The Uninvited and The Burning before saying cheers and playing out with KISS and their anthem ‘ Let me Go Rock ‘n' Roll.  Thanks for listening, much appreciated.  Cheers until next time.  Artists featured:  W.A.S.P, Whiskey Myers, Therapy? Badlands, KilliT, Warrant, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Soilwork, Sakis Tolis, Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, The Offspring, Blink 182, Candlemass, Burning Witches, Joe Bonamassa, Free, rave, Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch, Mammoth WVH, Matthew Goode Band, Godsmack, Motor Sister, Dead City Ruins, The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, Fleetwood Mac, Kid Rock, Van Halen, Parkway Drive, Metallica, The Uninvited, the Burning, Iron Maiden, KISS.  The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 46 of Season 5 aired on Rebel Rock radio at 7 pm on 17 Nov 2022.  The show started a bit differently for a change.  Instead of the usual full-throttle Rock ‘n' Roll we eased in with the classic ‘Judas' version of Bob Dylan's brilliant ‘Like a Rolling Stone'.  From there we went with ‘Squealer', one of the early ACDC tracks off Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.  It was decided that if you could have a night on the town with one of the dead rock stars then Bon Scott would be a seriously good guy to pick.  From there some Black Spiders off Sons of the North and then off to Aussie for a band called Catelano, the track was ‘Saturday Night', cool track, good times.   We checked out some Texas Hippie Coalition and a track called ‘Pissed Off and Mad About It' and that morphed into a bit of Chickenfoot. Joe Satriani showed once again just how brilliant he is when he is in a kick-ass band.   Def Leppard went down well with a track called 'All We Need' off their latest album Diamond Star Halos. It went a bit soft with Courtney Love and Hole not shouting and smashing things so I fixed that with Zakk Wylde, Buckcherry, Overkill, and Parkway Drive.  For a change, we played a track by Ghost called ‘Twenties' and then had three in a row while I had to take care of some work stuff, the joys of running a factory on night shift ☹.  The three were from Motörhead, The Dead Daisies, and Sons of Liberty, out of Bristol in the UK nogal.   We checked out the new Rebel Rock Jingle kindly recorded by Prawn of Diverted Disorder and then we took a listen to 'Destroyed by Fate' (Feat Jared Gunston) by Diverted Disorder.  The Color Blew with Liaan Horton on vocals and Timothy James on guitar kept the SA music flag high with a track called 'O.D'.  From there it was four serious rock tracks from Devils Train, Badlands, Iron Allies, and Skid Row.  The new Skid Row, The Gang's All Here is so good, its heading for a top ten finish for TSORR best albums of 2022.  Last week we missed the Punk section so I fixed it this week with Stiff Little Fingers and The Clash and then we played ‘Ain't It Fun', the classic written by the guys in Rocket From The Tomb but who went off to record it in The Dead Boys and then later the definitive version done by G'n'R, this version is live and right on the edge, if you don't get it, it's not for you as Billy Connelly once said.  It was fitting to go to Neil Young with 'Powderfinger' and then Johnathan Martins's amazing cover of Neil's ‘Cortez the Killer'.  The wheels came off at the end where I lost the plot and had a mirth attack about Sakis Tolis and we finished loud with My  Chemical Romance and Slipknot.    Artists featured:  Bob Dylan, ACDC, Black Spiders, Catelano, Ratt, Texas Hippie Coalition, Chickenfoot, Def Leppard, Hole, Leslie West Tribute (feat Zakk Wylde), Buckcherry, Overkill, Parkway Drive, Ghost, Thunder, Motörhead, The Dead Daisies, Sons of Liberty, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Live, Diverted Disorder, The Color Blew, Devil's Train, Badlands, Iron Allies, Skid Row, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, Rocket From the Tombs, Dave Hause, Warren Zevon, Johnathan Martin, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Sakis Tolis, My Chemical Romance, Slipknot.   The Story of Rock and Roll. Inspired by Istanbul Research Institute's exhibition at Pera Museum titled “What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!”: Byzantium in Popular Culture, we invited artists, authors and musicians to converse with researchers of Byzantine history on how they have engaged with Byzantine history in their works. We explore the unearthly ways of appropriating Byzantine culture in unlikely mediums and genres, showing novel ways of engagement with Byzantine heritage in popular culture. On Rotting Christ: Sakis Tolis, Jeremy J. Swist and Nikos Tragakis converse on the legendary band's engagement with history Jeremy J. Swist hosts Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ and Nikos Tragakis. They venture into the appropriation of history in Greek metal scene, especially by Rotting Christ. Jeremy J. Swist is a lecturer in the department of Classics at Brandeis University. His research interests lie in Greek and Imperial Roman historiography and rhetoric, Reception of Greece, Rome, and Byzantium in Heavy Metal Music among other things. He has given talks and published articles on the classical reception in heavy metal in various academic conferences and journals. His latest article, “Headbanging to Byzantium: The Reception of the Byzantine Empire in Heavy Metal Music,” appeared in the exhibition catalogue of “What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!”: Byzantium in Popular Culture. Jeremy is a prolific writer, and you can read his non-academic but still very insightful pieces at his blog Heavy Metal Classicist. Nikos Tragakis is the vocalist of the band Exarsis, and a deputy editor and writer for Metal Hammer Greece. Sakis Tolis, the founder and the frontman of Rotting Christ, which is a Greek black metal band founded by Sakis and his brother Themis back in 1987. The band has 13 full-length albums. In 2018, Sakis and Dayal Patterson co-authored the story of the band: Non Serviam: The Official Story of Rotting Christ, named after their song Non Serviam.

If you haven’t checked out the likes of Ravencult, Macabre Omen, Necromantia or Varathron, you’re slipping.
