In the early 1980s, three women — Bert Collins, Gayel Childress & Marta Nelson — founded the Ojai Studio Artists as a way for artists to connect, mentor and learn from each other. They also started hosting open studios on the second week in October, a tradition which flourished up until the global pandemic. It has helped establish more firmly Ojai's identity as an arts destination. This year, the tour returns Oct. 8-10 and features 63 artists. In a departure from the past, the tour this year is free. We talk with OSA president Pam Grau, who has revitalized the organization in recent years with Second Saturday mini-tours throughout the year, in which OSA members have the chance to tour each other's studios and create connections and unexpected inspiration. The fellowship that has resulted has become important to the members and the community, especially during such an isolating time as we've endured this past 19 months. Since 1993, proceeds from the OSA Tour have gone to support scholarships for students looking to pursue a career in art. www.ojaistudioartists.org

Confidence: How to Get It and How to Keep It

Confidence is NOT tied to your circumstances. Confidence is a choice you make in the face of your circumstances. This is not about fake or toxic positivity. To the contrary, choosing confidence, being curious about your failures and mistakes, and celebrating your wins will bring you clarity on the intentional results you want in your life. Today, Hellcat walks us through the Model she uses to coach her clients, explaining the process of how, no matter our circumstances, we can choose our thoughts that create our feelings which in turn drive our actions (or inaction) and get us our results. This method is all too clear when we talk about confidence.  Hellcat wasn't always a Hellcat. She wasn't born that way. She wasn't born a renegade. She has felt alone, still feels afraid - she stumbles through it anyway (lyrics credit to P!nk's new song, All I Know So Far).  She has many, many reasons NOT to be confident and to feel less than confident about being a parent, a wife, a business woman... but she learned how to manage those thoughts to serve her present and future, and she wants to teach you that today.  Come listen and learn how you can, too, and learn to NEVER say "fake it 'til you make it" ever, ever again. That phrase is the biggest killer to confidence.    Credits:  P!nk, All I Know So Far Brooke Castillo and The Life Coach School (The Model) Professional Moms: https://www.theetiquettenetwork.com/professional-moms/ Second Saturday: https://www.secondsaturday.com/ Hellcat Coaching: https://www.whatthehellcat.com/life-coaching Hellcat Speaking: https://www.whatthehellcat.com/speaking

6 March 2021 | Second Saturday of Lent | Eugene, Ore. As I walk in desert places today under a clear, cold sky, I want to share with you some fruits of the practice of keeping a monthly day of recollection and one good resolution I have made this Lent to become a better preacher. Then we dive into Tolkien’s essay on literary theory, “On Fairy Stories,” and some delightful quotes from letters to his sons, Christopher and Michael, before tackling the first half of The Two Towers through the theme of “hiddenness.” As we read, we consider: what did the Prophet Isaiah mean when he sang, “Truly, Thou art a hidden god!” Why does God hide Himself at all? And what does Gandalf have to do with the Eucharist? Opening music: “Lament for Boromir,” lyrics by J.R.R. Tolkien, music composed and sung by Clamavi de Profundis, 2017. All rights reserved. NOTE: Clamavi de Profundis is “a family that loves to sing together and record inspiring and uplifting music. Our music is influenced by classical and fantasy literature as well as cinematic, traditional, religious, and classical music.” I love their work! Check them out on YouTube here. I also recommend the album “An Evening in Rivendell” by the Tolkien Ensemble - you can find it here. Happy listening! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/in-your-embrace/message

We are building a local food system in our community. San Pedro is comprised of many different ethnic groups that all have a tradition of growing food and community together. And that has been lost over the years. We are bringing that tradition back. We grow food in a sustainable manner In empty lots and unused spaces. We make the food available in the communities in which it’s grown through produce stands and donations. We educate the public in ways to grow food in an environmentally friendly manner. We do that through workshops, classes, and special events. In 2015 I founded Green Girl Farms in order to continue to create positive social change through edible gardening, on a larger scale..... Divorce is not just a legal process. It also involves an emotional detangling as well as a financial restructuring. Money can be a particularly stressful part of the process, especially as couples begin to consider whether they will be able to maintain the same standard of living now that they’re apart. If you have questions around cashflow, tax ramifications, assets or liability—a divorce financial planner is a good place to start. Andy Samalin is a financial professional with 24-plus years of experience who has focused his practice on divorce financial planning through Samalin Investment Counsel and Samalin Divorce Finance. A graduate of New York University with a master’s in real estate finance, Andy is a Certified Financial Planner, an Enrolled Agent, and a federally licensed tax practitioner with the IRS. He is President of the Association of Divorce Financial Planners and the Founder and Chapter Leader of Second Saturday Westchester, a nonprofit that educates attendees about divorce. Today, Andy joins Katherine to discuss Second Saturday, explaining how the organization provides unbiased advice from local financial, legal and mental health professionals. He addresses the role of a divorce financial planner in determining a feasible outcome that allows both parties to succeed. Andy offers insight on the ‘power of neutrality’ a divorce financial planner brings to the collaborative process and the ADFP’s work to establish protections for divorcing couples.
