email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com (Some of) My Favorite Covers: From the earliest days of rock and roll, cover songs have been a vital part of the music's forward movement, drawing on its past. Long before we knew about digital discovery, one of the fastest ways for new artists to connect with audiences was to reimagine an existing hit and put it on an album or 45—infusing it with their own style, energy, and attitude. A Chuck Berry riff might get filtered through the Beatles' harmonies, or an old blues song could get a new spin in the hands of the Rolling Stones. Musicians have always looked back to reinterpret the songs that shaped them, essentially creating a conversation across decades of music. Great rock and roll covers often redefine the song. Jimi Hendrix's “All Along the Watchtower” transformed Bob Dylan's stark folk ballad into a guitar-rock, psychedelic stomper. Aretha Franklin took Otis Redding's “Respect” and made it a soul-rock anthem of empowerment. Nirvana's raw take on David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" introduced the track to an entirely new audience. In each case, the cover didn't just honor the original—it expanded its reach. The best covers don't just repeat the past—they rewrite it, proving that a great song can live many lives. 10 Iconic Rock and Roll Covers and How They Transformed the Original Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower (1968) Originally by Bob Dylan, Hendrix electrified the song with guitars and redefined it as a rock classic. Dylan himself later performed it in Hendrix's style. The Beatles – Twist and Shout (1963) Originally recorded by The Top Notes and popularized by The Isley Brothers, the Beatles turned it into their own via John Lennon's famously shredded vocal take. Aretha Franklin – Respect (1967) Originally by Otis Redding, Aretha flipped the perspective, injecting it with feminist firepower, gospel-inspired vocals, and made it an anthem for empowerment and equality. The Rolling Stones – Little Red Rooster (1964) Originally by Willie Dixon (recorded by Howlin' Wolf), the Stones slowed it down, leaning into the deep Chicago blues feel, introducing American blues to a younger audience. Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World (1993) Originally by David Bowie, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged version stripped it to a haunting acoustic vibe that resonated with '90s alternative fans - and (re)introduced Bowie to them, Joe Cocker – With a Little Help from My Friends (1968) Originally by The Beatles, Cocker turned the Sgt. Pepper and Ringo song into a soulful, slow-burning rocker. Killer organ and gospel vocals. Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart (1968) Originally by Erma Franklin, Joplin's version with Big Brother and the Holding Company was a raw and bluesy. The Clash – I Fought the Law (1979) Written in 1958 and first released in 1960 by The Crickets (after Buddy Holly left) and popularized by The Bobby Fuller Four, The Clash injected punk. It was their first single in the United States. Creedence Clearwater Revival – I Heard It Through the Grapevine (1970) Originally by Gladys Knight & The Pips and made famous by Marvin Gaye, CCR turned the Motown hit into an 11-minute swamp-rock jam. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (1994) Originally by Leonard Cohen, Buckley's haunting performance influenced artists in the decades that followed. Further Listening: 4 Lesser-Known but Brilliant Beatles Covers The Black Keys – She Said, She Said (2002) A gritty, stripped-down garage-rock take on The Beatles' psychedelic classic from Revolver. Siouxsie and the Banshees – Dear Prudence (1983) The Beatles' ballad morphs in goth-tinged new wave.. Gov't Mule – She Said, She Said / Tomorrow Never Knows (1998) A jam-band fusion of two Beatles tracks Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (1998) Slowed to a languid pace, Apple leans into the cosmic melancholy

To help answer this complex question, I'm joined by Dr. Corinne Menn, a board-certified OB-GYN, Menopause Society certified practitioner, and Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Menn brings a powerful blend of clinical expertise and lived experience. She's a 23-year breast cancer survivor, BRCA gene carrier, and went through premature menopause herself. We cover what the research really says about HRT after breast cancer, risks versus benefits, the reality of estrogen deprivation, and why “it depends” is the only honest answer. What happens when two people on opposite sides of a heated debate come together? Mark Rosenberg, a gun violence research advocate and former CDC official, and the late Congressman Jay Dickey, a staunch NRA supporter, were once bitter enemies. Their clash over the Dickey Amendment, which halted federal funding for gun violence research, seemed insurmountable. Yet, through a series of candid conversations and shared personal experiences, they discovered common ground and mutual respect. This Uncomfy conversation was adapted from a recent episode we did on gun violence over on our other podcast, Top of Mind with Julie Rose, which you can check out here: https://www.byuradio.org/2ca1d0ad-385b-45f8-91ec-a88a2474c347/top-of-mind-with-julie-rose-what-a-surprising-friendship-can-teach-us-about-gun-violence-in-america Related Links Rosenberg/Dickey op-ed 2012 - https://web.archive.org/web/20120801190312/https:/www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/we-wont-know-the-cause-of-gun-violence-until-we-look-for-it/2012/07/27/gJQAPfenEX_print.html Rosenberg/Dickey op-ed 2015 - https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/time-for-collaboration-on-gun-research/2015/12/25/f989cd1a-a819-11e5-bff5-905b92f5f94b_story.html 1993 CDC-funded study that prompted the Dickey Amendment - https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199310073291506 Follow us on social media! Thinking about hiring a functional medicine doctor? Before you book that first appointment, you need to be prepared. Functional medicine is a whole different game—it's an investment of time, energy, and money. If you go in expecting a quick fix, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Functional medicine doctors don't have a magic wand to undergo a terrible lifestyle. That work is on you. This episode is your functional medicine prep kit—everything you need to know and do before you commit to the process. Because any functional medicine doctor worth their salt does NOT take insurance, and the costs go way beyond the consult. Labs, supplements, and treatments like peptides can add up fast, so you need to know what you're signing up for and you need to come in as prepared as possible. More importantly, you need to take ownership of your health. No doctor—functional or otherwise—can do the work for you. If you're not ready to lift weights, fix your metabolic health, and make real lifestyle changes, functional medicine won't save you. Before you invest your time and money, tune in and get equipped with the right tools to get the most out of functional medicine. Topics Covered: Functional vs. allopathic medicine models The problem with the “pill for every ill” mindset, even if it's natural Metabolic compromise, insulin resistance & mold exposure Why weightlifting is non-negotiable for health The impact of diet, nutrition, and lifestyle Sunshine, stress management, and recovery tools like red light therapy & sauna On This Episode We Cover: 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:47 - Functional vs allopathic medicine 00:07:06 - “A pill for every ill” 00:08:30 - Metabolic compromise & insulin resistance 00:11:18 - Mold exposure & building resilience 00:12:34 - Price of functional doctors 00:16:02 - You NEED to weight lift 00:18:36 - Diet, nutrition, and lifestyle 00:27:10 - The importance of sunshine 00:29:11 - Dangers of high stress 00:32:59 - Red light therapy & sauna Further Listening: 10 Reasons I Love My Sauna Metabolic Health Playlist Strength Training Playlist Courses: Dr Tyna's Strength Corner Red Light Options: LumeBox: Use code DRTYNA Biolight Shine: Use code DRTYNA Sauna Options: Sauna Blanket: Use code DRTYNA Pop-Up Sauna: Use code DRTYNA SaunaSpace Tent: Use code DRTYNA Sunlighten: Tell them Dr Tyna sent you Sponsored By: Timeline Timeline is offering 10% off your order of Mitopure Go to timeline.com/drtyna. What does it mean to be human? What do we know about the true history of humankind? In this episode, I spoke with historian and NYU professor Stefanos Geroulanos to discuss his new book, The Invention of Prehistory: Empire, Violence, and Our Obsession with Human Origins (Liveright, 2024) to discover how claims about the earliest humans and humankind's true beginnings inform political and social practices to this day. How do the various stories we tell about human origins, including those about neanderthals, homo sapiens, killer apes, noble savages, and missing links shape the modern world? Have you followed a keto diet, become aware of your reptile brain, idealized a pre-modern state of existence or demonized others as behaving like Neanderthals? Geroulanos explains how accounts of prehistory arise in particular historical moments to solve contemporary problems, often linked to but as often quite apart from actual scientific knowledge. The Invention of Prehistory provides a crucial and timely examination of how the pursuit of understanding humanity's beginnings has been intertwined with agendas of war and domination. We're kicking things off with the band who inspired the Track By Track podcast and the name of this series... It's Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe AKA Pet Shop Boys. This series was first released as a Patreon exclusive, however we're now sharing the episodes across all podcasting platforms AND we're bringing it bang up to date with some additional choices. Let us know your thoughts on the episode and our picks on the socials @trackbytrackuk - and if you haven't already please do leave us a rating and review.
#72: We all dream of a family home overflowing with love, laughter, and fun. And yet the reality is daily chaos and trying to balance all the things we have to do along with teaching and training our kids! This week I'm sharing a journaling moment that changed my heart, changed my perspective which in turn changed our family - way back when my kids were little. I don't know about you but for me the Holy Spirit has a way of taking a Bible verse that I am very familiar with and making me really think about it, and and question whether I am living it out. That's is what I'm talking about this week. A Bible verse that changed how I engaged with my kids. Listen in. For full transcript: Parents are you Cultivating a Family Culture of Love and Caring? Further Listening: Building a Relaitonship with your Child will Lead to Friendship Later: It is important not to get relationship and friendship mixed up as we parent our children. Somehow, after two brand new Steps albums, last year's #1 Platinum Collection, tours with the band, the War Of The Worlds tour, and endless TV shows including performing on the final of the Great British Sewing Bee (!), Claire Richards doesn't fancy a break just yet. Thank goodness! Her brand new album, Euphoria, sees her covering some of the voices that inspired her, including ABBA, Donna Summer, Babs and Celine. With production from our pal Steve Anderson and guest spots from Andy Bell and Delta Goodrem, this is a huge collection of classic dance tracks given a whole new lease of life, and giving life. We're joined by Claire to go track by track through the album. The last time writer Damon Young was on Into America was back in the summer of 2020. He spoke about his New York Times op-ed, “Yeah, Let's Not Talk About Race––Unless You Pay Me” where he talked about the awkward and sometimes inappropriate questions he was often asked about race. Well, now he is getting paid with his new advice column, “Ask Damon,” in the Washington Post where readers can ask him anything and everything.Damon, who is the author of the book “What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker” and a co-founder of the blog Very Smart Brothas, says he loves leaning into uncomfortable thoughts, and he's ready to unpack the messy situations of strangers. So this week on Into America, Damon joins Trymaine to talk about this new venture, what qualifies him to give advice, some of the worst advice he's ever received, and what his conversations around race look like now. He and Trymaine also answer some burning questions from listeners. For a transcript, please visit msnbc.com/intoamerica. Tops Friendly Market has now re-opened in East Buffalo, two months after a white supremacist walked into a the supermarket with guns blazing. Motivated by previous racist attacks and the false and insidious“great replacement theory,” the shooter live-streamed his killing spree, during which he took the lives of ten members of Buffalo's Black community. The victims included parents, the elderly, a beloved community activist and the security guard who died shooting back.Tops closed down for months, dealing another blow to the hard-hit community. For years, Tops was the only supermarket in an area that's otherwise a food desert. Its opening in 2003 marked the culmination of a years-long push from community members, after decades of disinvestment. As the community continues to heal and forge a path forward, Into America travels to Buffalo to speak with Buffalo natives Fragrance Harris Stanfield, who was working at Tops the day of the shooting, and Pastor Tim Newkirk, a community activist who was involved in the original push to bring a full-service grocery store to his community. Just days after ABBA Voyage opened its doors to the public, we're celebrating an ABBA project that, at the time, was one of the first to bring the iconic Swedish four-piece back to the public conscious following their split in the early 80s. Released 30 years ago this week, ABBA-esque saw Erasure, one of the most popular acts of the time, put their spin on four ABBA classics. The EP was a huge success, staying at the top of the UK charts for five weeks. We're joined by Andy Bell to discuss the EP, his memories of ABBA, Voyage, Björn Again's Erasure-ish release, and more. As always let us know your thoughts on the socials @trackbytrackuk If you haven't already, check out our other Erasure and ABBA episodes, including Patreon exclusives on Erasure's Chorus and ABBA's The Visitors, and the ABBA episode of Further Listening, our Patreon series where we share ten of our favourite deep cuts and covers.

"I don't think anybody can truly describe the [psilocybin] experience. One can use phrases and words that are common - ineffable, mystical, powerful. All I can say is it was the most powerful experience of my life that I have gone through ever." "We had another CAT scan in September of last year, in 2021, and it showed another small nodule. My oncologist said, ‘Don't worry, we don't know what it is, it's very small.' But a part of me as a physician and as a cancer patient now thought ‘On no, we've got another nodule - that means I am stage 4 again'. Before my experience with psilocybin this would have been terribly devastating - to have been given that hope six months ago with no nodules, and now again Stage 4. But now I say ‘Ok, if I have cancer again, it's alright we will deal with it'. While I was somewhat anxious and I was a little bit low in spirits but it wasn't a gut punch." Episode Description: Pradeep shares with us his journey from initial symptoms of what was diagnosed as a stage 1 cancer to its return as a stage 4 metastatic cancer. Faced with a disturbing depression he entered a clinical trial using one dose of psilocybin in a carefully monitored research setting. He shares with us the "indescribable nature" of his 8-hour psychedelic experience. He then reports on the profound life changes that have remained with him over one year later. His approach to life is characterized less by highs and lows and more by a dependable sense of equanimity even in the face of his ongoing cancer. Though now retired, his wish to share his experience with others is testimony to his ongoing commitment to healing others. Our Guest: Pradeep Bansal, MD is a recently retired gastroenterologist from Long Island. He is originally from India and was in practice in the New York area for over 25 yrs. Apart from being a physician, he is an avid nature photographer.
